Chapter 28: Flower Power
"Ah," said Ed, smiling, seeing the sun setting over them. The trainers were pleased with the scenery as they walked down the dirt path to a city that's all teal with glass windows and other things, "This is the City of Rainbow Dreams."
"Yup," said Kevin, "Damn, I thought Saffron was huge."
"Yeah," said Rachel, "I'm going to love this place. This beats LumioseCity."
El smiled as she looked at them, "This is a really awesome place."
"Yup," said Ed, walking toward the PokémonCenter which was already in range. The doors opened up as Ed went to grab his Poké Balls to Nurse Joy.
"So," said El, sighing, "Should we get some dinner?"
"Yes," said Ed, rubbing him stomach, "I'm starving."
"Good," said Rachel, "Where is the nearest place to get food?"
Kevin sighed as he looked at her, "Like we know."
Ed sighed as he looked at her. Shaking his head, he picked up a red flyer. As he picked it up, he spread the flyer out.
"There's an Italian Restaurant about two blocks south of here," said Ed.
"Where?" asked Rachel.
"I just said where," said Ed, rolling his eyes, "Now, come on. I want my ravioli."
Later that day…
Italian music filled the room. The trainers were sitting together with their menus as their other Pokémon were sitting together, eating food outside in the beautiful night. Ed sighed as he was looking at the menu.
"Oh… what to decide… what to decide… this food looks awesome!" said Ed, grinning at the menu.
"Uh… yeah!" said Rachel, "Let's order everything!"
Kevin looked at Rachel, "Rachel, are you out of your mind?"
"Well, it's all good! Let's order this shit, bitch!" said Rachel.
"Wow," said Ed, laughing, "Since when did you get bitchy?"
Rachel looked at him, "Excuse me? Remember… I'm 11 years old… you know… it is that time of the month."
Ed shook his head, "Too much information!"
"Yeah right…," said Rachel.
Meanwhile, the other Pokémon were all arguing together.
"Squirtle… Squirt Squirt Squirtle!"
"Pidgeotto! Pidge! Pidge!"
"Bay… Bay… Bay…"
"Brai! Brai! Brai!"
"Clefairy… Fairy, Fairy, Clefairy!"
"ROAAAAAAAAR!"
Onix reached over toward Squirtle. Squirtle got angry and sprayed water in his face. Onix roared as he went to attack. Ed turned around with Kevin behind him.
"ONIX!" yelled Kevin.
"SQUIRTLE!" yelled Ed.
Squirtle and Onix looked at each other. Onix darted his eyes at Squirtle. Squirtle closed his eyes and turned away.
"Squirtle… I am going to rip you in half," said Ed, angrily.
Kevin looked at Ed, "Eddie, you're too harsh."
"Shut up, Kevin," said Ed.
Kevin looked at him, "Really?"
Ed rolled his eyes. He sighed as he sat down. Kevin turned to see Ed with an angry look.
"Are you okay?" asked Kevin.
"No," said Ed.
"Want to talk?" he asked.
"No," muttered Ed.
"Why?" asked Kevin.
"Because…," said Ed, "It's not worth it."
"What do you mean?" asked Kevin.
"It's not worth it," said Ed, watching the waiter come with the food.
A half hour later…
The trainers were walking back to the PokémonCenter. Walking by, Ed noticed a perfumery. It was a pink building in golden cursive handwriting. Rachel jumped up and down, "Oh my god, perfume!"
"Uh… Rachel, no," said Ed.
"Let's go, Eddie!" shouted Rachel, grabbing him by the hand. Ed screamed as they ran into the perfumery. The place smelled like strawberries, cherries, and pineapple.
"Nice," said Rachel, looking at all the perfume, "I want these."
Kevin looked at Ed, "Is this how she is at the time of the month?"
Ed turned around, "How long have been on the road with her?"
"Two months," he said, looking at Kevin.
"Right…," said Kevin, looking at him. Ed nodded as he kept walking, that is until he smacked into someone. She was dressed in a green kimono with white flowers. She had blue hair with a red headband and blue eyes. She smiled as she was looking at them.
"Hello, welcome to Celadon Perfumery," she said, "My name is Erika."
"Good evening, um, I'm just looking around with my friends," said Ed, smiling as he looked at her.
"That's awesome," said Erika, smiling, "So… what brings you here to Celadon?"
Ed looked at her, "Well, I heard there was a gym leader here and I was going to register tomorrow."
Erika smiled as she looked at him, "Ah. So, you are challenging the Celadon Gym."
"Yes," said Ed, smiling.
"Me too," said Kevin, walking toward him. Ed rolled his eyes as Kevin appeared, "My name is Kevin. I'm also here to battle."
"Oh, wonderful," said Erika, smiling. She bowed her head, "Well, you will be pleased to know that I am the Gym Leader of Celadon City."
"Ah!" shouted Ed and Kevin.
Rachel and El looked at each other. El nodded, "That's cool."
"REALLY?" asked Rachel.
"Yep," said Erika, "See you tomorrow morning at 11… and for you girls, you can have these perfumes on the house!"
Rachel's eyes grew. She was ecstatic as she was jumping up and down. She grabbed a bag as she took one item of each flavor, "Thanks so much!"
Ed sighed as he looked at Erika, "Thank you very much."
The group of friends left as they closed the door. Rachel smiled as she had a bag, "I'm so happy that I have perfume! I can use this for my contests!"
"I'm happy for you…," said Ed, sighing, "Now, we need to get sleep."
"Sleep?" asked Rachel, "Oh yeah."
"Yeah," said Ed, looking at her.
They reached for the glass doors of the PokémonCenter. As the doors open, Ed sighed as he walked into the PokémonCenter, yawning. It was already 1:30 in the morning. Immediately, they all decided to go to sleep. During that time, Ed and Kevin were in their beds, with the moonlight shining in their room. Kevin coughed a little bit. He was excited about tomorrow's battle.
"So," said Kevin, taking a deep sigh.
"Yeah," said Ed, turning around.
"What type do you think Erika is?" asked Kevin, looking at him with a curious look.
"Based on what I saw, Grass," said Ed.
"Grass?" asked Kevin, "I thought something like Fairy."
Ed rolled his eyes, "Trust me. Nature perfumes, fruity perfumes… it makes sense that she's a master of Grass-Types."
Kevin nodded, "I guess. What if she was a Fairy Gym Leader?"
Ed looked at him, "If that was a Fairy-Type Gym… she would be wearing wings or something to that effect… I don't know. You're tired. Go to sleep."
"Goodnight," said Kevin.
Ed rolled his eyes as he faced the wall.
The sun was rising from the misty trees of Celadon. The humidity increased and it was going to be a hot day. Ed yawned as he was already dressed and downstairs with a cup of tea in hand. As he was feeding Squirtle, he looked at the Pokémon and sighed.
"Sorry about last night," muttered Ed, "Shouldn't have said what I said."
Squirtle turned around and released a blast of water at his face. Ed smiled as he grabbed a napkin and wiped his face, "I guess that means you're still mad at me. Wonderful."
Houndour jumped up and landed on Ed's lap, "Hey, bud. Here, have some Pokémon Food."
Houndour barked, eating some of it. While Houndour was licking his lips, Ed took out a bag of Pokémon Food and poured it into a bowl. He gave the bowl to Squirtle and the rest of the food to his Pokémon.
"We are going to have an awesome battle today," said Ed, smiling.
Beedrill nodded as he was eating the food. Ed smiled as he also looked at Pidgeotto, who was eating some of it. Electabuzz downed the whole entire bowl.
"You're hungry," said Ed.
Electabuzz nodded as he was charged with electricity. Ed laughed a little bit, turning around to see El, Rachel and Kevin walking toward them.
"You…," said Kevin, "Ever heard of wait up?"
"The last time I waited, I was almost late to my gym battle," said Ed.
Kevin looked at him, "That was your own fault."
Ed gave Kevin an evil look and then turned to the Pokémon. He then noticed the clock. It was 10:30.
"Well, guys. Got to return all of you," said Ed.
The Pokémon nodded, even Squirtle, who looked up in the air. Each Pokémon was returned two at a time and then once. Placing the Poké Balls on his belt, he got up as he looked up.
"Now, where are you going?" asked Rachel.
"Got to find the Celadon Gym," said Ed, "Let me know when you're on your way."
"Okay," said Kevin, taking out his Poké Balls.
Fifteen minutes later…
"Gym… Where are you?" asked Ed.
He was walking along the stone paths of Celadon. There were colorful flowers that were surrounded by beautiful stone monuments. Ed sighed as he crossed a river and then turned to the right. He smiled as he saw a blue building with a red flower on top. To the right there was a teal sign that said "Celadon City Gym" in black letters. Ed smiled as he looked at the sign.
"Sweet. Now, to text Kevin," said Ed, texting him directions. The message was sent and Ed decided to walk along the path to the glass doors. As the doors opened, he smiled as he smelled perfume. A group of teenage girls were looking at him as he walked in. One had red hair with hazel eyes. She wore a green polo shirt with black pants and white sneakers.
"Hello, are you Ed?" she asked.
"Yes," said Ed, smiling, "Is Erika in?"
"Yes, actually she is getting ready for you," she said, "My name is Marissa. I will be the judge for the event."
"Sweet," said Ed, "I'm super excited and can't wait to challenge her."
"Good," said Marissa, smiling as she walked him to the battlefield.
Ed stood there in surprise. The battlefield was all grass with a greenhouse effect. There was a glass ceiling above the battlefield. The battlefield was all grass with white markers to outline the battlefield. There was a wooden plank on the right side to where the judge is going to be. Behind the judge spot, there were grass bleachers for the people watching the match.
"So, do all of you work for Erika?" asked Ed.
"Yes," said Marissa, "We even work at the perfumery part time."
"Nice," said Ed, smiling, "I heard about the time this kid from Pallet Town hated perfume and was asked to leave."
Marissa laughed, "Oh, you mean Ash Ketchum?"
"Yeah," said Ed, laughing.
"Figures," said Marissa, laughing, "Yeah, Erika was mad at Ash for insulting perfume. It was hysterical."
"Hello, Ed," said Erika, walking in. Ed turned around as he looked at her. She was wearing a green kimono this time with red rose pedals. She had her Pokémon on her belt as well as a black badge case on the side, "Are you ready to face me?"
"Yes," said Ed.
"How many badges do you have?" asked Erika.
"3," he said.
"Alright, so you aren't an amateur trainer. However, we will see in battle," said Erika, "Grass-types may seem weak, but they have a powerful punch and they don't concede defeat easily."
Ed laughed, "If I can beat Sabrina, this should be a piece of cake."
"You beat Sabrina?" asked Erika, "Wow. Usually, people have a hard time defeating Sabrina… even with two badges. Whatever, though. The past is the past. Now, you will battle me."
"Alright, so lay down the rules," said Ed.
"Hi, Ed!"
Ed turned around as Rachel, Kevin, and El sat down on the grassy couches. Ed turned around as he looked at Erika and Marissa.
"Your last name…?" asked Marissa.
"Fireheart," said Ed.
"Okay," said Marissa, standing up on the judge platform, "This is an official gym battle between Edward Fireheart of Pallet Town and Erika, the Celadon City Gym Leader. Each trainer is allowed three Pokémon and only the challenger can make substitutions. If the challenger wins, the challenger will receive the Rainbow Badge. Does everyone understand the rules?"
"Yes," they both said in unison.
"Good. Let the battle begin!" shouted Marissa.
Erika smiled as she reached for her Pokémon, "I will start off with my first Pokémon… Tangela, I choose you!"
The Poké Ball popped open. A Pokémon that was covered in blue vines with big white eyes and black pupils jumped out. The red shoes were shining from the sunlight.
"Tangela?" asked Ed, "Well, in that case… Beedrill, you're up!"
The ball popped open as Beedrill appeared. Erika nodded as she looked at him, "Beedrill? Interesting choice."
"Yep," said Ed, "Beedrill, Toxic Spikes!"
Beedrill nodded as he zoomed in shooting purple like spikes into the ground.
"Tangela, Constrict!" said Erika.
Tangela stretched out her vines. Beedrill yelled as he was caught within the vines.
"Beedrill," said Ed, looking at him, "Rage!"
Beedrill's body began to have a red aura that surrounded him. Beedrill began to get very angry as Tangela strengthened the attack. Beedrill's stingers started cutting through the vines. Instantly, Constrict fail through and Beedrill rushed out.
"Tangela, Sleep Powder!" yelled Erika.
Tangela released blue sparkling powder.
"Quick, Dodge and use Twineedle!" yelled Ed.
Beedrill nodded. Flying through, Beedrill stretched his stingers heading straight for Tangela. Beedrill flew over the powder and went toward Tangela. Tangela quickly shot blue powder in Beedrill's face. Beedrill's eyes began to flash on and off. He landed on the ground, sleeping.
"BEEDRILL!" shouted Ed.
"Now, use Constrict!" said Erika.
"Hell no, Beedrill return!" shouted Ed, stretching his Poké Ball out. Beedrill returned to Ed's Poké Ball before Tangela could continue.
"Got to admit, Ed. You definitely have potential," said Erika, "But, you need empathy. Without empathy, how will you be able to be good in battle?"
"It's not always about empathy. It's about strategy," said Ed, smiling, "Pidgeotto, I choose you!"
Pidgeotto flew out of the Poké Ball.
"Tangela, use Stun Spore!" shouted Erika.
Tangela nodded as she released a golden powder.
"Pidgeotto, use Whirlwind to send it right back to Tangela!" yelled Ed.
Pidgeotto flapped his wings. A blast of wind emerged from his wings, blowing the golden dust back at Tangela. Tangela yelled as he became immobilized. Tangela tried to move.
"Tangela!" shouted Erika.
"Pidgeotto, use Gust!" yelled Ed.
Pidgeotto flapped his wings, releasing gust like attacks. Tangela was hit hard by the attack. Tangela flipped backwards, landing on the ground.
"Quick Attack!" yelled Ed.
Pidgeotto charged in and tackled Tangela. Tangela yelled as she smacked into the dirt. Tangela's eyes were closed.
"Tangela!" shouted Erika.
"Tangela is unable to battle. Pidgeotto is the winner!" shouted Marissa.
"That's 1 of 3," said Ed, looking at Pidgeotto. Pidgeotto nodded. Erika nodded as she picked up her Poké Ball, recalling her.
"Nice," said Erika, "However, this Pokémon is going to be more difficult. Go, Weepinbell!"
The ball was released. A yellow bell-shaped Pokémon with two green leaves appeared. She had pinkish lips with eyes and green dots on her head.
"Weepinbell…," said Ed, "Great… Pidgeotto, begin with Feather Dance."
Pidgeotto flapped his wings, releasing white feathers from his body. Erika shook her head, "Quick, Weepinbell, use Razor Leaf!"
Weepinbell nodded. Weepinbell used the leaves from his body. The leaves cut into the feathers, blocking the attack.
"Acid!" shouted Erika.
Weepinbell released a stream of yellow sludge. Pidgeotto flew up, dodging the attack. The grass began to melt due to the acid.
"Quick Attack!" said Ed.
Pidgeotto quickly flew around and smacked into Weepinbell.
"Weepinbell, use Poison Powder!" shouted Erika.
"Pidgeotto, Whirlwind!" shouted Ed.
Pidgeotto flapped his wings once again to get rid of the Poison Powder. However, Weepinbell stood there looking at Pidgeotto.
"What the hell?" asked Ed.
"Ed, Weepinbell are part poison!" shouted El.
Ed sighed, "Figures."
Erika nodded, "Your friend is right. Did you really think I was going to just use strictly pure grass types? Come on. I love all grass Pokémon, even if they are dual typed. Weepinbell, Toxic!"
Weepinbell released a purple sludge. Pidgeotto screamed as he was hit by the attack. Pidgeotto began to cough up a little bit as he was poisoned by the attack.
"Crap," said Ed.
"Yep," said Erika, "Got to love poison!"
Ed sighed as he turned to Pidgeotto, "Pidgeotto, can you still fight."
Pidgeotto slowly nodded. Ed turned to the battlefield, "Twister and Gust, let's go!"
Pidgeotto shot three tornadoes and then three gusts of wind to follow with it. As the flying combination was heading to Weepinbell, Erika shook her head as Weepinbell was hit hard by the attack. Weepinbell yelled as she landed on the ground. Pidgeotto stood there heavily as he went to kneel down.
"Pidgeotto, come on!" shouted Ed.
"Now's my chance," thought Erika, "Sunny Day!"
Ed watched as the sun intensified. Ed looked at her and began to scratch his head, "Pidgeotto, use Gust!"
Pidgeotto flew toward Weepinbell and went to release another gust attack. Erika smiled, "Thank you, Ed."
"Huh?" asked Ed.
"Solarbeam," said Erika, smiling.
Weepinbell released a white beam of energy. Pidgeotto screamed as he flew in the air, landing on the ground.
SMASH!
"Pidgeotto!" shouted Ed.
"Damn," said Kevin, gulping.
"Pidgeotto is unable to battle. Weepinbell's the winner," said Marissa.
Ed nodded as he recalled Pidgeotto into his Poké Ball. Ed smiled, "Good job. Rest for now."
"So," said Erika, "Nice isn't it?"
Ed smiled. He had somewhat of an evil grin, "I'm not done. Houndour, finish her!"
The Poké Ball was thrown into the air. Houndour emerged and started barking.
"Ah, nice!" said Erika, "Weepinbell, Solarbeam!"
Weepinbell started shooting a white beam at Houndour.
"Quick, Houndour! Dodge and use Ember!" shouted Ed.
Houndour jumped up and released flames from his mouth. Weepinbell was hit by the attack. Suddenly, Houndour's mouth was about to get warmer from the sun. Ed checked the Pokédex as he went to do research.
"So, fire has increased with Sunny Day… and Houndour… knows Fire Fang?" asked Ed, "FIRE FANG!"
Houndour bit Weepinbell. Weepinbell yelled as she flew in the air.
"Dark Pulse!" yelled Ed.
Houndour released a dark beam, hitting Weepinbell. Weepinbell yelled as she landed on the ground.
"Weepinbell!" shouted Erika.
"Weepinbell is unable to battle. Houndour wins!" shouted Marissa.
"2 for 3," said Ed.
Erika shook her head, "Return, Weepinbell!"
Reaching for her Poké Ball, Weepinbell returned to her Poké Ball. Erika sighed as she looked at Ed, "Nice. Now, the next Pokémon… she was my first Pokémon and I use her every time. You won't lose. Go, Gloom!"
Gloom appeared from her Poké Ball. It was dark blue with orange leaves and a reddish-brown flower on top of her head. Her eyes were closed with purple lips dropping nectar.
"Yuck…," muttered Rachel.
Ed sighed as he looked at Gloom, "Oh boy."
"Gloom, use Stun Spore!" shouted Erika.
Gloom released another burst of golden powder.
"Great. Houndour, Ember!" shouted Ed.
Houndour released a burst of flames from his mouth, hitting the golden powder and hitting Gloom. Gloom was grazed by the attack.
"Dodge the remains and use Fire Fang!"
"Petal Dance!" yelled Erika.
Gloom nodded as she spun around releasing reddish pedals. It turned into a tornado, heading toward Houndour.
"Dodge!" yelled Ed.
Houndour dodged each attack.
"Fire Fang!" yelled Ed.
Houndour charged up, opening his fangs. As he went to bite, one of the pedals hit Houndour in the face. A cluster of pedals came down and hit Houndour.
"HOUNDOUR!" shouted Ed.
Houndour stood up carefully on all fours. He shrugged it off.
"Good," said Ed, sighing, "Now, Ember!"
Houndour released embers from his mouth, burning Gloom. Gloom then released a stench-like order.
"Ew," said Ed, "Is that an attack?"
"No," said Erika, smiling, "When Gloom is under attack, she releases that smelly odor."
Houndour was coughing up a storm.
"Come on Houndour!" yelled Ed.
Houndour coughed as he landed on the ground. Houndour struggled to get up due to the amount of odor that was being spread through the battlefield.
"Ew," said Rachel, "I need to puke."
"Not on me!" said Kevin.
Rachel got up and started running to the nearest bathroom.
"Houndour, Dark Pulse!" yelled Ed.
Houndour stood up and shot a black beam. Gloom was hit in the face by the attack.
"Now, Fire Fang!" yelled Ed.
Houndour bit into Gloom's body. Flames emerged as Gloom screamed. Gloom fainted as a result.
"Gloom!" shouted Erika.
"Gloom is unable to battle. The winner is Houndour. Victory goes to Edward Fireheart of Pallet Town!"
"Sweet!" said Ed, running over toward Houndour. Houndour was picked up as he landed on the ground, "You probably are tired and need a bath."
Houndour nodded, "Okay, let me put you in the Poké Ball."
As he returned to his Poké Ball, Erika smiled as she looked at Ed. Ed smiled as Erika removed the badge case, "That was an excellent battle. You never gave up and it seemed that you are very strategic. You managed to adapt even with Gloom's odor. Because of this, I will give you the Rainbow Badge."
Ed smiled as she opened the badge case. It was a flower. Each petal represented a color of the rainbow. As Ed picked it up, he turned to his friends.
"Alright, the Rainbow Badge is mine!" shouted Ed.
"Which means… halfway to the Pokémon League!" said Rachel.
"Yep," said Ed.
Erika smiled as she turned to Kevin, "We will start in an hour. I need to choose different Pokémon and heal my own."
"Okay," said Kevin.
Ed smiled as he placed the Rainbow Badge with the rest of his badges in a case. As he walked toward the exit to take a breather, he opened the door. Ed stopped as he saw someone familiar. She wore a red shirt and black pants with white shoes. She had brown hair and blue eyes. He couldn't believe it.
"Hey, how's my son doing?" asked Kelly, smiling.
"Mom," said Ed, surprised she was standing in front of him, "Hi."
A/N: So, this is where we end. Next chapter I will briefly touch on Kevin's battle… but something is going on next chapter. So, yeah. Catch you later.
