Chapter 28

"Well, Mr. Potter," Healer Sylvic said, looking James's sheet over, "You're in good shape. No memory loss, no permanent damage. Are you sure there's no dizziness or nausea?"

"None." James replied firmly.

"Alright, then. You're free to go." Sylvic signed James's chart and replaced it at the bottom of his bed. "We'll want you to come in for a check-up in a month, just to make sure that everything's still working, but you're free of us until then." She smiled at him. "And, don't take this the wrong way, but I hope I don't see you ever again."

James smirked. "Same here. I never want to be back." Sylvic smiled again before turning and walking over to Theresa's bed. Although James had made a full recovery, Theresa was still in bad condition. The smoke had done serious damage to her lungs and the splinter had punctured deep into her side. The injury itself coupled with the loss of blood and the feindfyre burns made her condition very unstable. Yesterday, she had been on the mend, today she was deteriorating. It made the healers nervous.

"Hey, mate." Sirius said, walking over to James's bed. "How're you doing?"

"Fine." James said with a tight smile. He glanced over at his mother's bed. "Well, as well as can be expected."

"You free to go, or…"

"Yeah. Care for some food?"

"Come on." Sirius smiled. "Lily was here." he mentioned casually after a few minutes of silence. James glanced sharply at his friend. "She sat with you all day yesterday." Something in James's expression must have betrayed the path his thoughts were taking him, because Sirius added, "She insisted that she only did it because you're her friend." James's expression fell. "At least she's not angry about… you know."

"Yeah." James said sadly.

.o.O.o.

"How are you doing?" James asked Barry after they returned to the hospital room. He noticed that his bed had already been given to an elderly witch whose head had been transformed into a tentacle.

"As well as can be expected." Barry replied, echoing James's words from earlier.

"Any news on the house?"

Barry shook his head. "Burnt to the ground. There's nothing left." He sighed. "I suppose we'll have to find somewhere else to live."

"We could go back to Godric's Hollow." James suggested. When he was younger, he used to spend his summer's in a little house in the village. He had fond memories of the place.

"I suppose." Barry said. "It would be nice to see old Bathilda again."

"Sirius and I can go check out the house."

"Not on your own you won't." Barry said grimly.

"We'll Lyall or Hope to come with us." Sirius said, referring to Remus's parents. "They've been asking if there's anything they can do to help."

"Don't bother Hope. She's getting sick again." Barry mumbled distractedly.

"Fine. We'll just ask Lyall." James acquiesced. "We need to find somewhere to stay, dad. You'd hate living at the Leaky."

"Alright, fine. Talk to Lyall and see if you can get him to take you to look at the old house. See if we can buy it. I won't rent."

"Alright then."

.o.O.o.

"Lily," Susana said, coming into Lily's room the next morning. She was sitting at her desk, working on her essay for Earth Magic. "Have you seen Rory?"

"Not since yesterday." Lily said tightly. She was still angry at her boyfriend, ex-boyfriend now, for the fight they had had last night.

"What happened?"

"We broke up."

"Oh, Lily…" Susana said in a disappointed tone. Lily turned to glare at her mother.

"Don't do that."

"Do what?"

"Coo at me like that, like I'm some stupid child who made a mistake. I'm a grown woman and I can make my own decisions." Lily said angrily.

Susana's mouth tightened. "You're only seventeen."

"Exactly. I'm of age."

"Maybe in the wizarding world, but when you're in my house, you are still a teenager. You can pull this 'I'm and adult' crap when you turn eighteen. Until then, you will show me the respect I'm due." Susana turned to leave the room, but paused in the doorway to add, "And you're grounded for a week." Lily sneered at the door as it closed behind her mother before groaning and resting her head on her desk. A tap sounded on her window.

Lily looked up to see one of the school owls hovering outside her window with a letter clutched in its beak. "Hello." she said quietly as she opened the sash and let the owl in. It dropped the letter onto her desk and ruffled it's feather's pompously before fluttering back out the window.

Lily shut the sash behind it, went to her desk, picked up her letter and carefully broke the wax seal. She pulled out the few pieces of paper and dropped the envelope onto her desk before flopping onto her bed to read.

The first page was the customary notice about the start of term and the second was her list of school things. Lily glanced over the list of books, taking note of the ones she already had and the ones she would need to buy. She also needed a new set of robes and her potions kit could do with replenishing. Lily sighed and set the paper aside before quickly scanning the third sheet of paper.

She froze, sat up, and re-read it.

Miss Lily Evans:

I am pleased to inform you that you have been selected as this year's Head Girl. You will find your badge in the envelope. You are required to wear this at all times.

The position of Head Girl is a prestigious one, and not given lightly. You must treat it with all due respect. The position is demanding, but we have faith that you will carry the weight, if not with ease, then with dignity.

In addition to your school work, you must organize the prefects, including the meetings and the patrol schedules. You must also organize the Hogsmeade trips and schedule the quidditch matches. It will be your responsibility to alert the student body about these events.

You will hold a prefects meeting at ten thirty sharp on the Hogwarts Express on the first of September. The purpose of this meeting is so that you may introduce yourself to the prefects and that they may introduce themselves to you. You will also remind them of the school rules and inform them of any amendments made. You will inform the new prefects of their duties.

As Head Girl, you will have a private room just off of the Prefect's Study. As you know, it is located on the fifth floor behind the portrait of the Star Crossed Lovers. The password is Concordia. This password may only be changed by both you and the Head Boy, just as house passwords may only be changed if the password is agreed upon between both prefects. The password to your private dorm room is Evans.

The best of luck to you, Miss Evans. I have faith.

Minerva McGonagall

Lily stared at the paper in shock and read it a third time. She then grabbed the envelope of her desk and tipped it upside down and, sure enough, a gold badge with HG emblazoned on it fell into her palm. Lily stared at it in wonder. In all the insanity that had occurred at the end of the year she had completely forgotten about the Head selections and that she would be eligible.

She grabbed the letter again and re-read it. "Huh." Lily mused aloud. "Doesn't mention who the Head Boy is." She shrugged and carefully pinned the badge onto her black tee. It looked good.

"Letters are here!" Sirius yelled, coming into the kitchen of 999 Rein Way, Godric's Hollow. Lyall had negotiated with the muggle owners, who usually rented out to couples and small families for summer vacations. He had convinced them to sell the cottage, fully furnished, to his 'anonymous client'. It James and Sirius had moved in that same night, but not until Barry had cast many charms to protect the house and warn them about intruders.

"Yours is heavy." Sirius commented, handing James his school envelope. James slit it open with his butter knife and tipped out four sheets of paper and a shiny gold badge. Both boys froze as it clattered onto the table. They stared at it as though it were about to bite them.

"Is that a…" Sirius trailed off. Tentatively, James reached out and flipped it over. The letters HB stared up at him from its reflective surface. "Bloody hell, Prongs." Sirius breathed. "Maybe it's a mistake?" James riffled through the papers until he found one that affirmed that he had indeed been selected to be this year's head boy.

"No mistake." he said, looking up at Sirius. "I'm Head Boy, Pads."

"Bloody hell." Sirius reiterated.

James flipped to the fourth page and looked it over:

"Mum!" Lily called excitedly, completely forgetting her earlier annoyance. "Mum! I got it!"

"Got what?" Susana asked a little sharply.

"Head Girl! I'm Head Girl, mum!" Lily practically sang, "I can't believe it! Isn't it incredible?"

"That's wonderful darling." Susana said, her expression softening. "I only wish your father were here to see it."

.o.O.o.

"Hey, mum." James said, holding Theresa's hand. She had finally woken up and the Healers had hope for her recovery. "Guess what?"

"What, darling?"

"I'm Head Boy."

"What?" Theresa's eyes widened in surprise, "Are you sure?"

James rolled his eyes and pulled the badge and letter out of his pocket. "Yes, mum, I'm sure. The letter is addressed to me."

"I always assumed… Remus… Well, never mind." Theresa smiled at her son. "Congratulations. I'm so proud of you!"

"And what about this one?" James asked, pointing at the little orange fur-ball napping in a corner of its cage. It was small enough to fit in the palm of his hand.

"This little beauty is a Flame Point Siamese Ragdoll." the Magical Menagerie salesgirl said.

"She's adorable." James said, kneeling down next to the cage. The kitten darted her tongue out and licked her own nose. James's heart melted.

"Kittens are a lot of work." Barry pointed out. As a present for making Head Boy, James was getting a cat.

"I don't care." James said, smiling. "She's perfect." The salesgirl smiled and lifted the little kennel off the shelf and carried it to the counter. James spent the next few minutes picking out a bed and scratch post and purchasing food and toys, as well as a travel kennel that would grow to fit the cat no matter how big she grew. The salesgirl slipped all of James's purchases into his shopping bag, which was enchanted with a Feather Light charm and an Undetectable Extension charm.

"Hey, baby." James cooed to his new kitten. He carefully opened the door to her kennel and lifted her out. She blinked her green eyes at him, her slit pupils dilating in alarm. "It's okay, Crin. I won't hurt you."

"Crin?" Barry asked, taking the shopping bag in one hand and the empty kennel in the other.

"That's her name." James said, still smiling at his new companion. "Crin. It's Romanian."

"I know." Barry said. "Romanian for Lily. I thought you got over her."

"Not quite." James said with a grimace, cradling Crin close to his chest and carrying her out into Diagon Ally.
