When I'm Gone

Draco Malfoy stared hard at the files in front of him. Work, work, work. That's all he ever did. He used to love working and being overwhelmed with the amount of trust they put in him to get things work. He was just their errand boy in the beginning until he figured out how to make the company more money. Ever since then he became the Operational Manager and soon became the President of the company. He worked hard to be in this position and wouldn't let anything get in the way. Sometimes not even his family. This was his second chance. To prove to others especially himself he was something. When Draco glanced down he saw his little boy playing with his toy broom, whizzing around his office. He smiled wishing he could join him though the stack of papers kept him from playing.

"Daddy, look!" Scorpius shouted gleefully. His son was building a model car from the kit his mother bought him a few weeks earlier.

"That's nice son." He muttered not taking the time to look at it properly. His son frowned at the lack of attention his father was giving him but shrugged it off. His Daddy never paid him any attention. He was used to it by now. When his model car was done and completed, Scorpius stood back to admire his hard work. People were right; he did have his Mommy's brains. No one could have created a model car at his age! Not even James Potter, his Mommy's best friend's son!

"Daddy! I finished! Isn't it cool?"

"Scorpius, Daddy is busy. Why don't you go show Mommy?" Putting his head down in shame for bothering him, he ran off to his mom. She would love his work!

"Mommy, look what I made! Daddy won't look at it, but you will, won't you?"

"Oh sweetheart! This is amazing! Look at this detailed work!" Hermione exclaimed, placing huge kisses on his face and he giggled. "Why don't you sit here and paint it for me? I'll go see where Daddy is." While Scorpius was busy, she decided to go see what her husband was up too. He was busy all the time and it was taking a toll on their small family. Leaning against the door, she watched him work hard and admired him for it. Though neglecting his family was not good either.

"Draco?"

"Hmm?"

"Why don't you take a break hun? You've been working since you came back hours ago."

"I need to finish this Hermione."

"Maybe a short break? Scorpius said you blew him off earlier. You know he just wants you to be proud of him. I'm sure you…"

"Hermione, why don't you understand?" Slightly taken back and wounded at his question, she was about to leave. "Hermione! I'm sorry. Give me some time. I'm trying." He said. Scorpius was down the hall and heard everything. He made a funny face, not liking the way his Daddy talked to his Mommy.

oOo

"Mr. Malfoy! What are you doing! The meeting is in five minutes!" His assistance said and Malfoy sprang up. He was sitting in his office and scrambled to get his files together for the presentation. "They changed the location too. It's on the 8th floor this time."

"What?" Malfoy mumbled. They never changed the time last minute before. Hurrying now, he walked in the elevator fixing himself up. Not noticing anyone he pushed the 8th button to go up.

"Hi Daddy." A voice said and Malfoy stepped back in surprise.

"Scorpius! What… what are you doing here?"

"I followed you Daddy. You lied to Mommy. You said you try and make things better. You didn't. You like these people better and now Mommy and I are all alone."

"Scorpius! Son! It's not like that."

"It is Daddy and now Mommy's leaving. We're both leaving." The boy said sadly.

"What? No. Where are you going?"

"Mommy loves Uncle Ron now. He's going to take care of her and me." Before Draco can process what his son said to him, his son stepped off the elevator, dragging a suitcase with him. "Bye Daddy. I love you but I need a new Daddy, someone who will play with me and be good to us." Draco was about to follow though the elevator doors shut and next thing he knows he's in the meeting. He was distracted the entire time and finally said.

"I'm sorry. I must go. There is something I need to take care of."

"Mr. Malfoy, you can't just leave! This meeting is worth…" Draco rushed out and didn't hear the ending of what the man was saying. He could care less. He couldn't lose his family and definitely not to Weaselbee. He hurried down to the fireplaces to floo home and paused. His dress shoes skidded and his jaw dropped. He saw Weaselbee holding Scorpius in his arms and had his arm around Hermione. Ron Weasley leaned down and Draco was about to shout no when Hermione leaned over and they kissed.

"Nooo!" He shouted. Weasley looked over and grinned.

"You had your chance Malfoy and you lost it." He said. Draco was about to retort when he sprang up and looked around breathing heavily. He was in his bedroom with his pajamas on. He looked to his left and saw Hermione wasn't there and he heard laughter outside. He pushed the curtains aside and saw Scorpius and Hermione there. She was chasing him as he zoomed around on his toy broom. It was all a dream. More like a nightmare. Going downstairs and out the door, he grabbed Hermione and kissed her on the lips hard.

"Draco! What was that for?" She asked surprised.

"I love you. So damn much. Please forgive me." She smiled and hugged him. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, breathing her in. "I'm so sorry Hermione." Scorpius tugged on his shirt and Draco laughed. He pulled his son up and threw him in the air, catching up when he came back down.

"We have a secret Daddy!"

"A secret? What is it?" Draco asked playing along. Hermione blushed and put his hand on her stomach. His eyes widened and he looked down in happiness.

"I'm going to have a baby sister!" Scorpius shouted with glee. Bringing the two of them closer Draco closed his eyes holding back tears. This was it. This was all he needed in life.
