It was a subdued group that moved around that morning. Vi returned after breakfast with a small smile upon her face, she had travelled far and wide to call upon allies for the coming war. There were a lot of people who owed her and she went to seek them out. She wouldn't force them to fight and indeed many refused but she encouraged them to do what was right. She had managed to round up fifty allies and that was a grand sum of people. She knew it wouldn't outmatch the army of Eiji but anything was better than nothing.
Jenna and Lexi spent the day preparing the vast army and putting people into groups based on their strengths and weaknesses. Vi was thankful for their logical minds as it would help greatly. There were many things to be done and Vi couldn't spare any time to instruct her army on what to do.
The witching hour was fast approaching and it wasn't long before they were travelling up to the ice green. Some came in cars, buses, motorbikes; others flew, ran or walked on four paws. If any humans could see them they would have thought they'd gone mad.
The Court of Fourteen stood in their armoured outfits, thinking of modern warfare you wouldn't think they would wear such old fashioned items like vests and chainmail, except this wasn't a modern war, it was an age old battle that was finally going to be settled.
As they walked onto the battlefield Vi was nervous, in fact they all were. Who knew how many of them would survive. Though many wanted to have heartfelt moments, there just wasn't the time, here there was no room for emotion, here emotion could get you killed. Here was where the battle would begin.
Her heart thundered and her adrenaline was running high, there were fourteen of them, plus the extra fifty allies that she'd managed to round up but they were up against at least a hundred and fifty enemies. Eiji stood on the opposite side of the field with his grotesque minions, they weren't humans, but they were vampires, werewolves and other gruesome creatures; hunched beings, beings with missing limbs, missing teeth and beings with different colour skin. It wasn't like a fairy tale or a movie, it was much worse.
She concentrated on what she saw, how many she saw and where Eiji was situated, out of the corner of her eye she saw Jenna and Lexi prepare the others and move them into groups. Klaus, Alaric, Tyler and Bonnie had been selected as leaders for groups of Vi's army. The fifty extra allies were split up into the groups that suited them best. Klaus's group was of brute strength and violence, Alaric for weapons and hand to hand combat, Tyler for anger and animalistic vengeance and Bonnie for magic. Then Vi's core group was made up of; Jenna, Lexi, Stefan and Damon.
The atmosphere was tense and the air was cold, no one was talking or moving. Everything was silent and it seemed as though both sides were unwilling to start the battle. Vi's side started to warily move on their feet, anxious for the fight to begin while Eiji's side started to back their feet and weapons, displaying their confidence and trying to intimidate Vi's side.
Vi felt Damon's breath on the back of her neck and was comforted by her presence. It reminded her that she did have a future to return to and it gave her more determination to win. Suddenly a lone arrow came flying across the field from one of the enemies and narrowly missed stabbing Bekah in the chest. This sudden movement ripped a strangled cry from Matt's throat and everyone quickly found themselves immersed in battle.
Battle is never neat and tidy, it is bloodthirsty and violent. You slay one creature and another takes its place. At first Vi tried to keep an eye on her other companions but soon found it to be too difficult. She had to concentrate on her own battle. She quickly lost count on how many she'd slain, though it was a kill or be killed situation, she couldn't help feeling the guilt as she took yet more lives. She sustained a bite to the shoulder when a vampire got in a lucky shot and then a deep scratch to her leg when swiped at by a werewolf paw. Other smaller cuts littered her body but she continued fighting on regardless.
Battle raged around her but she was determined in her fighting, she was moving towards the centre of the enemies' army. The outskirts were filled with lesser beings and as she got closer the level of skill with the beings became greater. Eiji had never been one to fight his own battles, if he could get out of it he would, it made sense that he would place himself securely in the centre of his own army. Only the brave would search for him there, of course Eiji would argue that only the foolish would come looking for him but Vi was anything but foolish, she just didn't want the world to be lost to darkness.
Her footing stumbled a bit as she tried to dodge other creatures, bending low she tried to pass unseen and for a while that seemed to work. She had a slight shock when she heard a loud roar and saw a creature that she didn't think existed anymore; a troll. The troll was large and menacing but not without weaknesses. Two hits to the back of the head and the base of the spine and the troll came tumbling down dead, Vi had to move swiftly to escape being flattened by the troll but in doing so she stumbled into another enemy who managed to add another cut to her face before she took him out.
Finally she saw a gap in the defences and she pushed through. She found herself in a small clearing and low and behold there stood the one she'd been searching for.
'I was hoping you would have died before reaching me' he said in a bored voice.
'Clearly you underestimated me then' she replied.
'Well it is not as if this fight will last very long, you are injured and weak whereas I am in fine condition' he said.
'You are a coward, what makes you think you have any advantage now that I have found you' she replied.
'Being a coward as you call me, was a good call on my part. Why should I risk injuring myself when I have others to do my bidding' he said.
'You always were lazy Eiji, skulking in the shadows and never taking responsibility. Have you told your minions that you expected them to die in battle? Did you tell Silas and Johnathon that they would not return from their missions?' she asked.
He made to move towards her so she side stepped him and thus began their dance around each other.
'Their deaths were necessary' he declared.
'It must be hard not being able to trust anyone' said Vi.
'What do you mean?' he asked.
'Well, don't you get paranoid that your 'followers' won't rally against you and overthrow you' she said.
'They're too thick for that, they follow my command only' he said arrogantly.
He lunged at her but she blocked his attack.
'You have improved in your fighting' he said mockingly.
'We were but children when we last fought and the world has advanced since then' replied Vi.
'And you with it I see, nasty business if you ask me. The world cannot survive being free, it must be captured and enslaved. The world lives to serve a higher power' he said.
'The world cannot be caged up, this world is full of imagination and goodness, it needs to be free to express itself' said Vi.
'You talk as if there are no bad things here whereas badness leaks out of every corner of the world' he hissed.
'For every ounce of badness there is an ounce of goodness. I cannot pretend to like the evil that lurks in the world but it is not by my hand that it will change' she said.
'Then what use are you at winning' he said.
'Better a world basked in light than a world shrouded in darkness' said Vi seriously.
'You cannot win!' said Eiji.
'You will lose' replied Vi.
Eiji swung his sword towards Vi but she stopped it with her own. Their swords clanged against each other as their fight began in earnest. Eiji was right, Vi was injured and weakened but her tired state only pushed her further and she was running purely off adrenaline now. However, Eiji was cocky, his actions were not ones of precision and he had already made several mistakes, allowing Vi to get in some vicious blows of her own. Soon they were both panting with the effort to seize the upper hand. They were evenly matched in more ways than some and their fight became more violent and demanding.
In a moment of lost concentration, Eiji managed to knock the sword from Vi's hand. Vi scrambled to pick it up but it had fallen too far away, she stood up defenceless, a hunger still in her eyes and a fight in her body.
'Give up' said Eiji 'you've lost your weapon, how can you hope to beat me now'.
'Never, I will never stop fighting you' replied Vi.
'If you give up now, I will spare your comrades' he said.
'Your words have little meaning to me, I cannot trust what comes from your mouth' she said.
'Then you have chosen the road of death' he shouted.
Vi crouched slightly to defend herself as Eiji came running at her with his sword. A thousand different futures passed across her eyes in a matter of seconds and she braced herself for the pain that would come. Yet it was not a dying pain that she felt but a burning pain, she opened her eyes against the pain and was surprised to see the cowering figure of Eiji before her. His sword had been forgotten on the ground and he looked up at her with fear in his eyes. Her skin pulsed, her mind raged and her body seemed to be acting on its own accord.
Flames shot from her arms down to her hands, her hair wiped around her face like a tornado, the earth trembled under her feet, ice cold tears fell from her eyes and her heart was radiating a strong while glow.
Every step she took towards Eiji had him scrambling to get away from her. He had no weapon and no means of escape. Vi looked down upon the pitiful man who had haunted to much of her past, she looked into the eyes of the man who had sought to drown the world in darkness and found she could feel nothing of him. Nothing remained of the child he originally was, he had been so tainted by the darkness that he followed, by the greed that he wanted and the power he chased that he was no more a man than a shell of emptiness.
'Please don't end me' he pleaded.
Nothing could stop her, she ignored his pleads for they were all lies, if she let him live he would only come back again, more powerful and more determined to take over the world.
'You have no more chances' she said in an ethereal voice.
'You cannot do this' he whimpered.
'You have lost, the darkness holds no power, your comrades will fade with time and the light will forever guard the earth' said Vi.
A panicked look crossed Eiji's face as he realised he had nowhere to run to. When his end came, he did not go quietly and his screams were heard across the entire battlefield. His demise did not stop his army, they continued to fight, though it was still night the sky began to illuminate and with the brightness that came, the creatures began to fade and disappear, their cries of pain even more bloodcurdling that their masters before.
Vi took the illuminated sky as a sign that peace had once again been returned to the world. She was sure that there would be other battles between good and evil but they wouldn't be her's to fight. She had finished her battle now and secured victory for the light. She felt her powers slowly leave her and was glad that they wouldn't stay. She didn't want to have that power at her fingertips because it was a power that couldn't be controlled and she didn't want to worry about hurting someone she loved.
Though she dearly wanted to collapse upon the ground, she forced herself to move away from the bodies of the fallen and towards those that she could still see standing. She knew many of her army had fallen but she could see more than she thought still standing. It raised her heart knowing that so many had survived. However, there were many injured within the standing and that would now become her first priority.
Before she could check who had survived and who was most injured she was engulfed into a bone crushing hug. She didn't have to see to know who was hugging her and it made her rejoice to know they'd survived.
'I thought I'd lost you' he whispered.
'Never' she replied.
'You're injured' he said.
'So are you' she stated.
'I will love you for the rest of my days' he said, weeping for joy.
'As will I' she replied.
THE AFTERMATH
In the aftermath of the battle, the group were very weary, some injuries were minor and some were more substantial. There was victory to be celebrated but for now the injuries needed to be tended to and the group needed to rest. Lexi, Klaus and Vi had the most injuries and it was Jenna and Bonnie that herded the group back to the Salvatore Boarding House and started to administer treatment to the wounded.
Vi refused to be treated first, she demanded that everyone else be treated before her. If Damon had his way then Vi would have been treated first but Vi was stubborn and kind hearted and wouldn't see others suffer. Vi suffered silently with her pain for a good two days before she was forced into being treated by a very concerned Damon.
In between all the healing, there had been time to grieve. Some of the allies that had answered Vi's call had already returned to their homes with bad news and sorrow in their hearts. It would have been easy for any one of them to blame the deaths on Vi but they did not. They knew that it wasn't her fault, they all knew what they were getting into when they agreed to help and at least those who had died had died bravely and for a cause of good.
It took a long time for Vi's shoulder wound to heal, her other injuries – including the deep scratch to her leg – healed much quickly. Even when the wound had healed to merely a scar, her shoulder sometimes bought her pain. It had not been an ordinary wound, not because it had been caused by a vampire but because it had happened during the war. It was like a fixed point and something that would remain with her always as a reminder of all that had happened.
Once a substantial amount of time had passed, the group were slowly getting back to normal. The battle had understandably changed them but it had also bonded them and they remained a close group of friends.
Damon and Vi now had the rest of their lives to lead, and it seemed that everyone wanted a bird's eye view on how that would pan out. However, neither Damon nor Vi were concerned with the curiosity of others, they were blissfully happy knowing they had survived the countless dangers laid before them and had come out together.
So what was in store for the couple now? Well Damon did mention a honeymoon didn't he!
