Jason and Sagaritta
The knife hurtled toward her. She ducked just in time, the knife ripping the skin off the top of her ear. She let out a breath, grasping the attention of her captors. They spun round, grabbing her arm and pulling her off into the woods. The largest held a sword to her throat. She clenched her fist to stop her hands from shaking.
She let out a blood curdling scream, before blackness.
"Sagaritta", Jason shook the sleeping girls shoulders, waking her. Her screaming stopped and she looked into his eyes, a single tear running down her face.
"Sagaritta," He repeated, "It's okay, it was just a dream".
"They had me Jase, the Careers, they had me." Sagaritta whimpered into Jason's shoulders.
Their eyes met and Jason planted his lips on her cheek .
"Well, you're safe now." He whispered into the limp girls ear as she slowly fell back to sleep. He laid her back into her sleeping bag before joining the warmth of his own.
The Careers
"It's MY sleeping bag." Jo screamed, pushing Mason backwards. Her strength shocked him, knocking him off balance momentarily. He quickly regained balance and took a step closer to the small girl.
"Oh, you got some nerve pushing me like that, girl." He spat the last word as the remaining Careers (Zach, Crisis, Caspia and Raiden) began circling them. Jo bowed her head in apology, ashamed.
"You're not worth it." Mason stammered through gritted teeth as he drew a machete from a pocket on his belt.
He strode forward, and with ease, slid the blade of his machete into the girl's heart. Her lifeless body crumpled to the ground, a thin trickled of blood oozing from the hole in her chest.
The Cannon sounded.
"I'm gonna go find some food." Crisis smiled, breaking the silence and walking off.
Kimberly Matthews
Kimberly Matthews sat alone. She lay down, letting her body relax, her head lightly hitting the floor. The hammer she snatched from the start stood as a solid reminder of where she was. Kim closed her eyes and thought about life before the games.
A noise in the shrubbery snapped her out of her thoughts and a shadowy figure emerged. Kimberly bolted upright; her first instinct was to grab her hammer. She stood as the figure came closer.
The Careers.
A girl, not much older than 13, walked over. Kimberly recognized her to be the District Two girl Crisis. Kim launched herself at the girl and felt Crisis' skull crack as her body fell.
The cannon sounded, confirming her death.
Matt and Lavender
"Matt? Are we lost?" Nora whimpered, tugging down on the older boy's sleeve. He shrugged her off and she turned away, defeated.
"I don't know, will you just-" An arrow flew through the air and embedded itself in Matt's shoulder. He turned around stunned and attempted to pull it out, assisted by allies, Nora and Jaeger. Blood gushed out and Nora quickly pulled off her jumper, pushing it onto the wound.
"I, I don't feel so good." Matt stuttered, his body going limp.
"No, No, No, No!" Jaeger cried pulling the boy back to his feet. "We can't lose him Nora, he's our last hope."
"Just leave me." Matt whispered, a smile appearing on his lips, "But I expect you to win." His eyes closed for the final time as another cannon sounded.
"Did, Did I kill him?" Lavender, followed by two younger children emerged from the trees.
"YOU MONSTER!" Nora cried, launching herself at the teenage girl.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you." Bethany, Lavender's ally stepped forward, forcing the small girl onto the floor.
Nora crumpled and burst into tears, salty water dripping down her face and splashing onto the floor. She curled in to a ball in a foetal position, hands raised over her head. Nora kicked at the ground, her small feet making contact, but having no effect. Finally, her cries stopped and Lavender knelt down beside her.
"I didn't mean to kill him, you were making so much noise, and we thought you were careers." Nora let the older girl embrace her and she moved in closer, a smile spreading across her face.
"Can we stay with you?" Nora muttered and Lavender nodded her head.
A low growling was heard in the distance and Maddie spoke up. "I hate to ruin this intimate moment, but I think we should move."
Lavender and Nora stood up, but it was too late. A large wolf-like mutt bounded out of the undergrowth, tackling Maddie to the ground. Oblivious to the small girls screams, Lavender stood, fixed to the spot, too scared to move. Nora tugged at her sleeve, bringing her back to reality. Nora, Jaeger, Lavender and Bethany sprinted out of the forest. Maddie's small body was engulfed by mutts, and her small innocent body was ripped to shreds, the only sign of her existence was the cannon, echoing through the arena.
The faces off today's deceased tributes appeared on the sky, as a reminder that no one is safe. Ever.
