Bioware Owns All! Except for Beau who came from my crazy head!

Chapter 29

The following morning Beau was the first one up out of everyone in the house. Varric, Anders and Fenris ended up staying overnight. They all piled into the spare room and fell asleep on the floor after having a little too much to drink. Anders had woken up a couple of minutes after Beau knocked him out the evening before. He'd had a slight headache but was not injured badly. Varric suggested that the best way to cure a headache was alcohol, so that's what they ended up doing for the rest of the night.

Beau stretched out and went into the main room of the house. She noticed that neither Gamlen nor Carver had returned that night, which was probably for the best. Rohan was sleeping in his favorite spot in front of the fireplace. He let out a big yawn, stretched, and then marched over to Beau. He leaned into her, looking for love and attention. Beau scratched his ear. He let out a satisfied huff after a little bit and returned to his spot and went back to sleep. Beau looked over to the front door where their bags were sitting and waiting. Beau's stomach fluttered a bit. Today was finally the day and she was terrified. The door to the spare room opened revealing Fenris, who was rubbing the top of his head. He squinted when the sun hit his eyes; clearly he was hung-over.

"I bet you're happy that we are going into the deep roads where there is no light, huh?" Beau giggled.

"We have to make it to the deep roads first. I am not looking forward to that journey. You can't tell me you feel terrible. You drank almost as much as I did." Fenris grumbled.

"I feel fine except for that stupid tingle. I thought it was because I hadn't slept well the night before, but it's still there…weird."

"I still have it to…though it is hard to feel as my head is throbbing."

The door opened again revealing Varric and Anders. Varric didn't look like he was hung over at all, but that was dwarves for you, they could handle their alcohol. Anders on the other hand looked like he had died and come back to life.

"Well Anders, you look like shit." Beau bluntly commented.

"Justice doesn't usually let me drink this much. I am not used to it anymore." He replied quietly.

"Well come take a sit and I will make you guys some of my curative hangover tea." Beau ordered as she ushered them over to seats by the fire. "What time do we have to be in Hightown Varric?"

"I would say that we should head over there soon. I am going to see if Isabela is alive at the Hanged Man and then we will meet you in Hightown after you cure these two." Varric chuckled.

"Sounds like a plan. We won't take too long, I promise."

Varric slammed the door as he left, making Anders and Fenris cringe in pain.

"He did that on purpose." Fenris growled.

Beau just laughed.

After a restoring cup of tea, Beau, Fenris and Anders were ready to make their way up to Hightown. Beau's mother woke up and insisted to come with them so she could see them off. Beau couldn't deny her mother's request, so the four of them started up the stairs towards Hightown.

The Hightown Market was empty, only a couple of the merchants were there setting up their stalls for the day. Beau hadn't realized how early it actually was, no wonder Fenris and Beau felt like crap. The group moved along until they reached the Merchant Guild which was a flurry of activity. There were dwarves strapping packs and equipment to Brontos while Varric and Bartrand were looking over the Deep Roads maps. Other than the dwarves, there was a group of human mercenaries waiting in the shadows of a dwarven statue. Beau recognized a couple of them from the Red Irons, others were wearing helmets so she couldn't see their faces. They nodded some acknowledgement when they saw Beau, but she didn't nod back. That part of her life was over. Isabela was leaning against the wall talking to Bodhan and Sandal while they packed up the store and enchantment materials onto their own Bronto. Beau was surprised to see Isabela was wearing leather armour that covered her whole body. Beau left her mother with Fenris and Anders as she walked up to Isabela.

"I am shocked to see you properly dressed for the Deep Roads." Beau teased.

Isabela smiled. "Hush you. If we are going to face hordes of darkspawn I don't want my beautiful skin tainted by darkspawn blood."

Beau raised her eyebrow. "Such a practical attitude, especially coming from you.""

She gasped. "What are you implying Hawke?"

"Nothing, I am just not used to it. How was your night with Merrill?"

Isabela leaned in towards Beau. "Do I have gossip for you, well it's not really gossip since I was there and I know what's happened."

"Well now I am intrigued. What happened?"

"Merrill and your brother totally had sex last night." She whispered in Beau's ear.

Beau's eyes widened in surprised. "Wait, what….what do you mean they had sex!?"

"Come now Hawke, I don't have to explain sex to you do I?"

Beau was starting to get frazzled. "Carver had sex with Merrill...well I guess I should be thankful that it wasn't a girl from the Blooming Rose."

"Oh this didn't look like your brother's first time. He knew what he was doing. I am sort of jealous actually."

"ISABELA! How do you know...how do you have all of this information?"

"Well they started making out in the main room of the Hanged Man and then I let them use my room, but you know the Hanged Man isn't the most private place, well except for Varric's room."

"OK! YOU CAN STOP NOW!"

"Oh look at you! Are you blushing? You can't tell me you didn't know that your brother was sleeping around."

"Darling are you going to introduce me to your friend?"

Beau turned around to see her mother standing there and the look on her face told Beau she had heard some, if not all, of their conversation.

"Mother, this is Isabela. She used to be a Captain of a ship."

"It is nice to meet you." Her mother commented coolly.

"And you Lady Hawke….now if you'll excuse me I think I will go over to Anders and Fenris while you two have an awkward conversation. Nice to meet you again!"

Isabela scooted across the compound to where Fenris and Anders were standing, leaving Beau and her mother alone.

"Well at least I now know where your brother was last night." Her mother said quietly. "Did your friend say where Carver is now?"

"No, but I am sure he is fine." Beau said trying to comfort her mother.

Her mother nodded, tears filling her eyes. "I am losing both of you. This city is taking you both away from me."

"The city is not taking us away. We are growing up, and yes this city is big, but you have to trust us to make good decisions. I know I have to ease up on Carver." Beau explained.

"You are just a protective big sister."

"And you are just a wonderful mother." Beau smiled.

Her mother smiled back. She leaned in and kissed her daughter on the cheek. "I will see you when you get back my dear girl."

"You're not going to stay a little longer?" Beau asked her mother.

Her mother shook her head. "I will just get in the way, and your friends are here. You don't need me."

"I will always need you." Beau replied softly.

Her mother just smiled at Beau as she turned her back and started to walk out of the compound. Beau could feel tears welling up in her eyes. She didn't think that she would get emotional, but it finally struck her that this could go wrong. That might have been that last time she was going to talk to her mother. It all hit at once.

"Hawke? Is everything ok?" A familiar voice asked.

"I'm fine Fenris. It just hit me that we may not make it back from this."

"That's true, but you forget that you are Leandra Beau Marie Hawke. You make the impossible . . possible." Fenris commented.

Beau laughed. "That was very poetic. Taking some pointers from Varric?"

Fenris smirked. "No, that was something you taught me. Face the day no matter what it brings."

Beau nodded. "Right, and that means going down into the Deep Roads and that means we may never see the sun again."

"That is our day it seems." Fenris replied.

"Well let's get started then."

The expedition made its way out of the city. It was slow going at first. Bartrand was barking out orders trying to get the group to look uniform. Beau and her party lingered back from the main group. They may be a part of the expedition, but Beau didn't want her friends to be caught up in Bartrand's craziness. Fenris and Beau walked together while Isabela and Anders walked behind them. Isabela kept asking Anders questions about Justice, while Beau and Fenris walked silently. Beau was just happy to be out of the city again, and Fenris seemed content just to be in her company. Varric walked back from the main group as his brother was shouting at him. Varric just kept walking towards Beau not listening to his older brother's yelling. Bartrand finally gave up and waved his hands in defeat.

Varric sighed as he started walking with Beau and Fenris. "Do you know if it is going to rain tonight?"

"Well, it is cloudy and a little dark - so it might rain today." Beau joked.

"Come on Hawke, I meant magically. Do you know if it is going to rain?"

Beau closed her eyes and concentrated. "You are not going to like my answer."

"It is going to rain then?"

"It's not just going to rain. It is going to storm and the closer we get to the mountains there is risk of snow."

"Can you make it go away?" Varric asked. "We aren't going to make it to the Deep Roads entrance tonight at the pace we are going."

Beau pondered for a second. "I can curve it away from us, but this storm is big. it would be better to be underground than in canvas tents."

"Right…well I guess we will just have to pick up the pace." Varric walked away without saying thanks to go tell his brother the news.

"I don't like this Varric…I want fun Varric back." Beau pouted.

"I agree." Fenris sighed.

The expedition quickened its pace to get to the Deep Roads entrance before the storm. As they got closer to the mountains and the entrance, it started to rain. The expedition group groaned as they tried to protect themselves from the rain, all except Beau and her small group who were trailing behind. They didn't seem to be bothered by the rain.

"Hawke, what did you do?" Fenris asked.

"Who me? I didn't do anything."

"You certainly did something, because everyone else is getting rained on except us and I didn't do anything." Anders commented.

Beau pointed up. "I may have punched a hole in the clouds so that we could stay dry."

"You couldn't do that for the rest of the expedition?" Anders asked.

"I could, if you guys wanted to carry me the rest of the way." Beau explained.

"Come on, I have seen you perform bigger feats of magic then this. You can make it rain yourself. This is small compared to that." Anders remarked.

"That is me combating nature. I punched a hole in the sky but I have to keep it open. The clouds are still trying to close the hole."

"Leave her be Anders." Fenris growled.

"It's not that I don't appreciate what you are doing, it just seems unfair to the rest of the expedition." Anders observed.

"It is I suppose." Beau sighed.

As soon as Beau finished her sentence it began to rain on them. Isabela swore, Fenris just grunted and Anders let out a sigh. Beau herself just giggled lifting her hands above her head, catching rain drops.

"There, now we are a part of the group." She laughed.

When the expedition made it to the Deep Roads entrance it was nighttime. The rain still was falling, which made the expedition wet, grumpy, and cold. The Deep Road entrance had collapsed on itself. Beau and Anders being the only two mages on the expedition were put to work moving the rocks out of the way so they could enter. The group could have done it manually but that would have taken all night. Bartrand wanted to get underground and out of the rain. Beau and Anders were able to punch a hole through the rocks in an hour. They were both exhausted, but the group was able to move into the cave and down into the Deep Roads. They made camp once they found a spot big enough for the whole group. By the time camp was set up, Beau and her friends were exhausted. Beau looked around marveling at the structures that surrounded them. The dwarven columns were exquisitely crafted and the statues that still stood, were amazing. Beau's group once again set up a little way from the main group.

"You never told me how pretty the Deep Roads were Anders." Beau remarked as she looked around.

"Most of the Deep Roads are just caverns and tunnels but sometimes you encounter roads like this that have survived the passage of time." Anders explained. "Just wait until we run into darkspawn and deep stalkers, you won't think they are pretty then."

Varric walked over to their group sat down and let out a little sigh. "Blondie, is there any darkspawn around?"

"Not that I can sense. If that changes I will let you know."

"What about you Hawke, can you sense anything?" Varric asked.

"Why ask me? I am no Grey Warden."

"I know but you have that whole nature thing going on. Is there any animals or creatures around?"

Beau pondered for a second. "Nothing that we need to worry about."

Varric nodded and closed his eyes. "Then I can stay here instead of going to talk to my brother."

Isabela reached into her jacket, producing a flask, and handed it over to Varric.

Varric chuckled and smiled. "You are a lifesaver Rivani. How much alcohol did you bring?"

"What do you think is all in my pack?" She responded.

The whole group laughed. The flask got passed around; everyone took a drink except Anders, who decided against it.

"So who is going to take first watch?" Varric asked.

"I can do it." Beau offered.

"Isn't this why you hired the mercenaries?" Fenris asked.

"Yeah, like I am going to trust a group of people who are only here for the money." Varric scoffed.

"Like I said, I can take first watch." Beau insisted again.

"No, I will take the first watch. You need sleep after all the magic you did." Fenris told her sternly.

"Yes mother." Beau pouted.

With that, the group settled in for the night. Anders leaned against some rubble, his staff lying against his chest. Varric ended up going back to the main camp to have one last talk with his brother. Isabela had actually set up a tent so she could sleep naked, which left Beau and Fenris to figure out their sleeping arrangements.

"Are you going to sleep in the tent with Isabela?" Fenris asked.

"Not when she is naked. That is just asking for trouble." Beau laughed.

"I suppose so. So where are you going to sleep?"

Beau moved closer to Fenris so she could lean against his arm. "I am good right here. Wake me up when you want to sleep."

Beau closed her eyes and fell asleep listening to Fenris' breathing. They were in the middle of the Deep Roads, but she had never been happier.
