I'm being shaken. I feel like I'm drowning in water, being thrown by waves. My eyes are closed, but my lungs are burning. My whole body is burning. I furrow my eyebrows and try to open my eyes. I hear someone calling me in the distance. I want to reach out at them and scream at them back to tell them where I am. I want to open my mouth to scream for help, but if I open my mouth, I might drown.
The waves still shake me. It's not necessarily rough, but it stops soon, and I being lifted by something. My lungs start burning more and a pounding starts to happen in my head, as if a hammer is repeatedly banging itself against my temple.
I feel myself being lifted to the surface of the water until I reach the surface, and I take a deep breath before I scream.
I gasp and my eyes shoot open as I awake. A scream almost escapes my throat before I realize what's happening. I'm pressed up against Jacob's bare chest as he jogs while carrying me bridal style. When he notices I'm awake, he stops immediately which a panicked look on his face.
"Elle, what happened?! Are you okay?!" He says, scanning my face.
I shake my head instantly and bury my face in his neck. I just remember riding on Jacob's back through the forest, getting a terrible headache and falling into darkness.
He curses under his breath and starts running as fast as he can. "I swear if anything happens to you… Hold on, Elle. We're almost there."
I choke back a sob from the headache. It's never been this bad before. I feel like screaming, and throwing up, and I don't know how I'll handle this much pain for much longer. "Jacob." I sob, my arms wrapping tight around his neck. This only makes him run faster, which I didn't think was possible. He's the only person I want right now. He helps the pain somehow.
When I hear his feet go against concrete, I let out a sob of relief. Finally, we're here. I keep my eyes closed as someone opens the door.
"What happened?" A soft voice says. I recognize it as Carlisle's, even though I've only met him once.
Jacob stops as I hear the door close. "It's Elle… She's…" I hear him choke on his words. I press a light kiss on the side of his neck. "Please, Carlisle."
I never thought I would hear Jacob beg a vampire for something. Let alone, to help me.
"Ellie, I'm going to take you from Jacob, okay?" Carlisle asks. I open my eyes and look at the pale vampire. We're still standing in the doorway. I nod slowly, still looking at him.
Faster than I can blink, I'm lying on a couch inside of a room with medical materials. Carlisle is across the room, gathering some tools together as Jacob just enters the room. He immediately spots me and makes his way over to me on the couch, kneeling in front of me.
"Everything's going to be okay," he tells me, putting his forehead on mine. He grabs my hands in his and rubs his thumbs across my knuckles, trying to reassure me.
A few tears slip out of my eyes as I squeeze them shut, trying to block out the pain in my head in any way possible. "Jacob…" I tell him. "It hurts. I'm so… hot. And cold." I choke back another sob. What is happening to me? Why me?
"Jacob." I hear Carlisle say behind him. "I'm going to need you to take a step back."
"I'm not leaving," Jacob lightly snarls, gripping my hands tighter. A shiver runs down my spine at the thought of Jacob leaving me in here with a vampire. By myself. I squeeze his hands back, putting my head on his shoulder. Too much noise. The hammer continues to bang against the side of my head relentlessly.
"I wouldn't ask you to leave. I know how important Ellie is to you. I just need you to back up."
Jacob takes one, two, three deep breaths before I feel him leave my side and stand. I immediately shiver, curling into a ball, keeping my eyes squeezed shut to block out the light.
"Okay, Ellie. I'm going to draw some blood first. It'll be quick." Carlisle tells me gently. I nod slowly, putting my face into a pillow, trying to block out everything around me. A terrible smell starts to invade my nose as I feel the needle of the syringe poke into my arm. It takes Carlisle two seconds before he leaves with a sample of my blood.
I hear Jacob kneel back down in front of me. My breathing gets heavier as I feel my lungs tightening and my whole chest starts to burn, as if a fire is starting in the middle of me, going through all of my veins. I let out another sob of pain and bite back a scream as Jacob rubs his hands up and down my arms.
"Water," I gasp out. "Please." Just something to put out the fire. Anything.
I open my eyes to a squint and I don't like what I see. Jacob looks exhausted and crushed. His eyes are red, as if he's about to cry. I lift my hand to his face before my muscles start to shake and it falls back onto the white couch.
Jacob quickly stands and walks to the sink in the corner of the room, taking a little plastic cup and filling it up as quick as possible before running back to me. He holds the glass to my lips and I look out of the corner of my eye to see Carlisle's back to me, his head looking down at something on the counter in front of him.
I sip from the glass as Jacob tilts it back. It goes down my throat and into my chest, but the burning barely ceases.
Jacob moves the glass away and places it on the ground. A wave of heat comes over me and I start gasping for air. The fire expands and gets hotter, as if that was possible. I let out a scream this time and sit up against the couch, clutching my head in my hands as the pain gets even worse. I hear a buzzing, as if a million bees are in my head.
I pull my knees up to my chest and put my head on my knees and my hands on my head. I just want it all to stop. I can't think. I can barely hear. All I hear is Jacob shout at Carlisle in a panicked way before I feel a hand on my arm. It jerks away right after, as if it got burned.
I slowly start to feel myself fade out again, the pain getting to me. Spots and different colors appear in my vision as my breathing gets heavier. My hearing is muffled, along with a loud ringing noise. Something explodes in my chest, and I'm underwater again, falling backwards into something.
Everything stops. I don't feel anything. I don't see anything. I don't hear anything, smell anything. It feels like all of my senses have shut down and I'm floating in outer space. Then I open my eyes.
I see Jacob's face hovering over mine. His eyebrows are furrowed, eyes are red, he's moving my hair. "Elle? Please tell me you're alright." He looks over his shoulder. "Carlisle, come on!" He yells, before turning back to me. "Please say something."
I open my mouth. My chest feels tingly, as if there was no fire. I feel sweat drip down my body. I must have only been out for a few minutes. There's a dull ache in the back of my head, but I know it's going to get worse again. It feels like an endless cycle.
I launch my arms around Jacob's neck, burying my head in his shoulder. "What's happening to me?" I whisper. Jacob gives me a kiss on the side of my neck, just as I had done to him almost 15 minutes or so ago. That's how we calm each other down.
I hear Carlisle speak behind Jacob, and my wolf pulls back a few inches to face Carlisle. "I have results about the blood sample. Ellie, I'm not sure that you know as much about your past as you think you do."
