CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT - One to thrust
In no time Emmett was dressed and looking for weapons inside the train car. I knew that at least our knives were there as we'd only taken our gun with us.
I too put on my trousers and my shoes, at the same time that I questioned Emily.
"How do you know about this?" I asked.
"A few days ago I was going through Jeanine's stuff and I found this paper with your name on it, along with four other names."
"Four other? Which ones?"
"Your boyfriend's, his name's Emmett right?" I nodded, "And there was a girl too, she must be from his family because they had the same last name."
"Kate," I said, my heart beat fastening and my hands shaking so hard that I could barely lace my shoes. I decided to just shove my shoelaces inside my grey trainers.
"Yes! And the other two were boys. One of them was Oliver? Owen? Something with an O."
"Owen. That's Kate's boyfriend. Do you remember the last name?"
Emily shook her head. I tried to remember who could it possibly be and I just prayed for it not to be Four.
"And how do you know she wants us killed?"
Emily gave me a look.
"Well, some of us actually do what Evelyn has asked us to, you know."
"Please don't lecture me now."
"I'm not lecturing you, I'm just saying." I raised my eyebrows. "Okay, sorry. But, as you know, I'm supposed to spy on Jeanine, and I happened to overhear her talking with this guy from Dauntless. I just remembered that he had a lot of piercings." Eric.
"And she ordered him to kill us?" I asked, but that's when Emmett showed up behind me.
"Love?" He said, handing me a gun – the only one he was carrying. I knew Owen had another one, but he'd probably taken that one with him.
"You keep it." I said, taking the knives that he carried on his other hand.
"Are you sure?" He looked rather worried and I wondered if he was thinking about his sister.
I nodded and turned back to Emily.
"Keep going."
"Yes, as you said, she did asked them to kill you, but the guy said he was not going to do the job. If I remember he said something like: 'not again. It'll look suspicious.'"
Of course, not after Maeve.
"But they didn't come here…" I said, "So where are they?"
"They have an address of some apartment somewhere. I couldn't really understand that part. After that, I came here as fast as I could."
I nodded. The only apartment I could think of was Zander's. I turned to Emmett; he seemed to be thinking about the same thing.
"We have to go there," he said. I could tell he was getting more and more anxious.
"What time is it?" I asked.
It was Emily who answered.
"Just past seven," she said.
"Kate should be here by now." Emmett stated. "And so should Owen. We got to go, Is. We have to find them."
Once again, I nodded and we started walking towards the actual train tracks. I didn't need to instruct Emily to follow us; she started walking almost immediately after we did.
"Yeah, but we have to spilt up." I declared, a plan starting to take place in my mind.
"Split up?" Emmett gave me a confused look.
"Yes. We are not certain that either Kate or Owen went to the apartment. There's the possibility that they're on a train somewhere, on their way here. Or worse, on the way there. So one of us goes look for them around the city, while the other goes to the apartment."
"I'll go to the apartment." Emmett stated before I could say anything else.
"You know that's not going to happen," I told him, not bothering to look up at him.
However, he pulled by my arm, forcing me to stop walking.
"I'm not letting you go off there getting yourself killed," Emmett warned me, looking me right in the eyes.
I looked away for a while, before I locked eyes with him.
"Emmett look, if there's a chance Kate is alive out there we have to find her as quickly as possible. And you know you can run way faster than me. We can't risk it. You have to go in the trains and look everywhere you can."
"But-"
"No buts," I interrupted him. "I can defend myself. Besides, Emily will come with me. If anything I can use her as shield."
"How nice of you," Emily said.
I hushed her. Emmett, on the other hand, sighed quite loudly. He didn't like this plan, not even a little bit, but I could also tell he was wrapping his mind around it.
"Two hours," he said, "you have two hours to be back in the train car. If you're not, I'll force my way inside the Erudite headquarters and kill as many people as I can."
I pinched my lips for a while – he meant it. Finally though, I nodded and then forced my arm out of his grasp and kept going towards the train tracks; Emily was just behind me.
"You two are quite messed," she said.
"I don't remember asking for your opinion."
I could see the train tracks now and I hoped that it wouldn't be too long till some train passed through. Once we stopped, Emily forced me to look at her.
"Will you ever stop acting like that?!" She asked. "In case you haven't realised I might have just compromised my cover to save your life!"
I sighed. She was right.
"I'm sorry. I'm just… under a lot of pressure right now."
A few minutes passed before Emily spoke again.
"Is it always like this for you?" She asked, her voice barely a whisper.
I shrugged and looked at Emmett. He had stayed behind, on a clear try of containing himself. I knew he wanted to argue about what we were about to do, but he also knew it was the best plan we had.
"You've heard the stories, I guess. Erudite don't really fancy us."
Emily nodded.
"Is you whole group…?"
"Divergent?" I asked. "No, just me and Emmett."
"And do you all mark yourselves?"
I laughed, she was referring to our tattoos.
"Yeah, and we meet every full moon to perform our rituals. You know, it's when our superpowers are stronger."
Emily rolled her eyes and laughed too. I felt a small pain when I noticed our much alike our laughs sounded like. But then she turned serious.
"But it is why they're killing you, isn't it? Because they think you have superpowers." She didn't really mean the superpowers part, she just meant that they were killing us because of our Divergence.
"Yes," I said, turning serious as well. "At least, we think so. They killed one of our friends a while ago."
I could feel my tears coming, and I tried to hide them, but luckily we heard a train coming, so I didn't need to do much of an effort as in no time, the three of us were jumping inside. Emmett only approached me then.
"Two hours," he said and then he pulled me to him and kissed me, the same way he'd kissed me after Maeve died. With despair. With passion. With sadness. And with fear. And as before, the feelings were too many for me to handle, so I pushed him away.
"Two hours," I said too.
He nodded, and then he left to look inside the other train cars, leaving me with a strange feeling of emptiness. I'd got used to being with him twenty-four hours a day, and leaving him for two hours seemed rather impossible. But I had other things to focus on.
It took me and Emily about half an hour to read Zander's street. And when we got there, I could already tell that something was wrong. It was like the street was emptier than it should be, even though on normal days, you would barely see anyone there.
I pulled my knives out of my pocket and instructed Emily to stay behind me. She nodded and slowly we made our way to Zanders apartment.
The door was slashed open when we got there, a bad sign. And indeed, once we crossed it, we saw the bodies, and the blood and the bullet wounds. I looked away and took a deep breath, which sounded more like a sob. But before I dwelled on it, I looked inside the other rooms, thankfully they were all empty. No sign of their killers either. I walked back to the living room where the bodies lied.
I didn't know Matt very well and to be honest, I didn't really like the guy much, but Zander was nice. He really was. He didn't deserve to die like that. He didn't deserve to die. Full stop.
"Is that Matthew?" Emily didn't seem to be talking to me as much as she seemed to be talking to herself. "Oh my god, of course!"
I turned to her.
"What is it?"
She eyed me before she spoke, as though she was pondering whether I was ready to listen to whatever she had to say.
"They killed him because he wasn't needed anymore. Although he's name wasn't on the list…"
"Wait, you're saying that Matt was on Jeanine's side?" I asked her, shocked.
"Yes, she was one of her favourites. Why'd you think I work in the Hub? Do you honestly thought I fancy teaching Stiffs?"
"Watch your tongue," I said. Even though I was really an Abnegation member, I had to stand up for what was now my faction.
"Yeah whatever. I just didn't know you were friends with him. I don't think I ever saw you speaking to each other at work."
"We weren't friends." I stated. "I didn't even like the guy. I guess it was my gut telling me that the guy was a liar."
"Then, if he's not your friend, what's he doing here?"
I sighed.
"He was Zander's boyfriend, I guess."
"You guess?"
"Well no one has ever told me they were dating, I just kind of figured it out myself."
"Right."
"Let's just go," I said. "Or else we're just waiting to be killed."
But it was too late, as soon as we stepped outside the door, there were two Dauntless members waiting for us outside. Their shotguns pointed straight at our hearts.
