Green Card

"Calm down." Caroline spoke softly. "Everything will be fine." She tried to assure him.

She quickly showed him a picture of the ultrasound. "See?"

He smiled tenderly at her and kissed her on the lips before the elevator doors opened.

They approached the front desk and were immediately ushered into a room in the back. They walked inside the small room that only held a desk and three metal chairs.

The walls were white and a single plant stood in the corner of the room. This place definitely would make anyone feel uncomfortable.

They took a seat and the receptionist slammed the door behind them. Caroline tried not to jump as she placed her folder on the desk and took a seat next to Klaus.

A few moments later a woman entered the room.

"Mr. and Mrs. Mikaelson?" Caroline and Klaus both looked back at the woman and smiled.

Klaus stood up and firmly shook his hand.

"My name is Meredith Fell. A pleasure you meet you both." She smiled at Caroline as she let go of Klaus' hand.

Taking a seat across from them, she opened her folder.

"I assume you brought me the correct paperwork, Mr. and Mrs. Mikaelson." Meredith reminded them.

"We didn't forget." Klaus told her promptly. "I'm sure everything you need is in here." He directed her towards the folder. "And more."

"More?" She raised her eyebrow at him.

"We're expecting twins." Caroline smiled wide, but Meredith did not look amused.

"I expect you to understand how this is going to work. We will interview each of you separately over the next two hours. After we are done with the preliminary interview we will follow up with you both in the next week."

Both of them nodded before she continued.

"I am also aware of what else is going on Mr. Mikaelson and depending on your legitimacy this process could be further delayed depending on the verdict. However, if you are not legitimized then I am afraid we have a long process to go through."

"Let's get on with the interview then." Klaus held his cool.

"Very well." Meredith smiled. Her gaze leaned towards Caroline. "You're up first, Caroline. Klaus you can remain in the lobby until I'm finished."

As Klaus shut the door Caroline prayed her nerves would settle. She knew the pretenses they started on, but knew that it wasn't the case now. She just needed to sell their case and pray that this lady believed her.

"How did you and Klaus meet?" She started with a simple question.

"Our families have been friends for years." She told her honestly. "I needed a job and his father thought I was the only one who was able to tame him."

"And did you?" Meredith smirked at Caroline.

"Did I what?"

Oh.

"I guess you could say I did." She smiled. "We're expected two little ones." Caroline pulled out the ultrasound pictures.

"It's too early to tell the sex of the babies but –"

"Did you plan this pregnancy, Caroline?"

"Oh heavens no!" Caroline said. "I was just as shocked as Klaus was. I was even scared that maybe he wasn't ready yet, but I wouldn't change the look on his face for the world."

"Is it true that Klaus forced you to marry him?" Meredith never swayed from the purpose of the conversation. "It just seems strange to me that as soon as his green card is about to expire he marries you."

Caroline remained quiet, she was a terrible liar.

Meredith pulled another document out of her folder and placed it in front of Caroline.

"Does this look familiar to you?"

It was the contract. They knew.

"Where did you get that?" Caroline tried to keep her voice calm.

"It doesn't matter where I got the document. It is true that you are in a Marriage of Convenience with Mr. Mikaelson?"

"Not anymore." Caroline told her honestly. "That contract is null and void. We stopped following it a long time ago."

"But it is still a legal document." She told Caroline.

"Who gave it to you?" Caroline's eyes narrowed at the woman.

"I cannot disclose that information." She told her.

"There are only two people that have that document Miss. Fell and if I am to understand that my lawyer provided you this document when it was supposed to be confidential I will see you both in court."

Caroline stood up from the rough metal chair and made her way towards the door. There was no way she was going to put up with this shit.

A non-pregnant Caroline would have remained in the seat, but unfortunately her hormones were controlling her actions today.

"He's mine, Caroline." Caroline let her hand drop from the doorknob.

"What?" Caroline asked dumbfounded.

Meredith stood up from her chair and stepped in front of Caroline.

"He's been obsessed with you for years." She told Caroline. "I tried to make him forget you, but he wouldn't"

"What are you talking about Meredith?"

"Tyler Lockwood." She laughed menacingly. "I watched that man suffer so long because of you. He's just as obsessed with you as I am with him. I promised him I would make you suffer and I will, Caroline.

"You better hope the DNA test comes back positive because I swear I will have Mr. Mikaelson out of the country faster that you can blink."

"You're a crazy bitch, you know that?" Caroline told her. "And when the DNA test proves that Klaus is a citizen of the United States, I will take pleasure in taking you to court.

Caroline stomped out of the room and passed a very confused Klaus.

He stood up and followed Caroline out the door.

"What the fuck just happened?" Klaus chased after her trying to keep calm.

"That crazy bitch in there is obsessed with Tyler!" Caroline tried not to scream at the top of her lungs. "She stole a copy of the contract, Klaus. She already knew. There was nothing that I could do or say to change what she wants to do with you."

He stood silently for a moment trying to process everything Caroline was saying to him before he grabbed Caroline and pulled her into his arms and hugged her. Caroline started to cry hysterically.

He rubbed the back of her head trying to calm her down. "Shhh… Caroline please don't cry."

"I ruined this! She hates me because Tyler is in love with me. Tyler never even told me about this psycho! She loves him and this is all just one big fucking mess. She wants to deport you, Klaus. She wants to hurt me."

He kissed Caroline on the forehead before he pulled back slightly and held her at arms length. "Caroline, we still have tomorrow." He told her. "It will be fine." He tried to convince himself.

"Tomorrow is the only hope we have." Her voiced trembled. "If not, you will be deported."

"Don't worry about me, Caroline. I will take care of this. I will take care of us. I just need you to trust me. Can you do that?" He brushed away one of her tears.

Caroline didn't answer him.

"Caroline?" He asked her again.

"I trust you Klaus."

Miss me?
