Chapter 28

Thawed Hearts

Kira was kneeling down, holding her brother, her head buried in his shoulder.

"I'm so sorry" she cried. "I couldn't stop it... please, please forgive me..."

While Kira held onto Gideon, Kristoff continued to fight off Lars. Lars had the skill, but Kristoff had twice his strength. Lars lunged again, but Kristoff dodged it, grabbing his arm and spun him around against one of the pillars. Kristoff put his elbow against his chest, pinning him to the pillar. In that brief moment, Lars saw Kira, holding her brother, free of his control.

"No!" he said out loud in disbelief. His one piece of leverage, his secret weapon, gone. In rage and desperation, he kicked Kristoff in the shin. Gaining just a bit of leverage as Kristoff flinched in pain, he struggled free, pushing Kristoff out of the way as he ran towards Kira.

"Maybe" he thought as he ran. "Get that crystal out of her hand, get out of here with her, come back for Elsa when I've got the advantage again..." He was on his way, when Jase came out in front of him, sword drawn.

"Stop right there" he said, keeping his sword pointed at him. Lars swung his dagger, making contact with the longer sword with a clang.

"Get out of my way, knight!"

Jase, unmoved, glared back at Lars. "Why does everyone use that word like that?!" he said, annoyed. He pushed his sword against Lars, sending him back a few feet. Lars went to fight back, but he was knocked in the back of the head. He fell forward, revealing Kristoff behind him with a broken icicle.

"Where have you been?" asked Kristoff.

Jase re-sheathed his sword. "Got caught up with nearly every other pirate in this plac, minus this guy" he replied. He looked around quickly, realizing that the immediate danger was now gone. "Where's Elsa, and Anna?" he asked.

Kristoff didn't answer. He immediately ran to where he left them across the throne room, Jase following.

"Why isn't this working?" said Elsa, trying not to panic. She continuously tried to remove the ice from Anna, to no avail. Every time she tired, the magic just buried itself deeper into Anna's heart. Anna would occasionally shiver whenever Elsa, giving her the notion that she might be making it worse. Elsa watched as a tear rolled down Anna's eye.

"We're too late" she said. Elsa could see the sadness and hurt in her eyes. The last time this happened, Kristoff mentioned that Anna was optimistic to the end, even though she was afraid on the inside. This time, however, Anna made no attempt to hide her fear. It was too much, being a mother and dying of the same aliment she already faced before.

Before Elsa could respond, Kristoff came with Jase right behind him running, kneeling at Anna's side. "Anna!" he said, grabbing her hand. He saw that her hair was still white, and that she was still shivering. He looked up to Elsa. "What happened?"

Elsa shook her head. "I, I don't know. I can't get it out" she said, her voice cracking from frustration and sorrow. "I thought I could do it, but I can't... This doesn't make any sense. Joan said I could save her..."

"Who?" asked Jase, clearly confused.

Kristoff ignored the last statement, focusing on Anna.

"It can only be... a-an act of true l-love" said Anna. She looked at Kristoff. "I'm so s-sorry, Kristoff. I failed..."

"No!" said Kristoff. "Don't you dare say that! You're going to be fine!" Kristoff pulled Anna closer to him. "I love you Anna. I love you!" he said. He held her closer still, praying that somehow, his love would thaw her heart. He wasn't about to give up, but realizing that he had no idea what to do, he cried, careful not to let Anna see.

Elsa held Anna's hand. She was powerful, and she knew it. She had removed ice from Jase before; why was she failing now?

"Why is the magic sticking to her heart so tightly?" she asked quietly. Jase stood nearby, wondering what could be done. Elsa held on to Anna's hand, trying to feel a way to remove the magic.

Nearby, Kira held onto Gideon, his skin turning more white while he was unconscious. She was utterly broken.

Unbeknownst to her, Gideon's skin was suddenly losing its frost coating. His body increasingly warmed. His hair was turning back to its normal black color. She jumped as he took a deep breath. Looking down, she saw the change.

"Gideon?" she asked.

Gideon blinked, slowly opening his eyes. "Kira? Is it you?"

Kira screamed in delight, happy tears rolling down her cheek seeing her brother come back to life. "Gideon!" She cried, hugging closer. "Oh, thank God!" she cried. "I thought you were dead! I thought I killed you!"

Regaining his strength, Gideon leaned up, hugging his long lost sister. "You could never hurt me... You're back. You're home; I'm never going to let anyone take you, ever again."

The siblings, after thirteen years, were finally reunited.

Elsa closed her eyes, straining to feel for something, anything she could do to save her sister. There was no act of true love she could do that was strong enough. It was up to Elsa, and she had no idea what to do. It was so easy with Jase's head; the magic came right out. But with the heart... it was like the magic just wanted to stay there. For some reason, love, and only a powerful form of love, could remove it.

Or at least, weaken it...

"Wait!" said Jase, an idea coming to mind. "Wait, I have an idea..." He walked to Anna. Kristoff loosened his embrace on her, allowing her to make eye contact with the knight. "Anna, I want you to recall all the love you feel right now. For the baby, for Kristoff..."

"Jase" said Anna in defeat. "We already tried. I thought of those things when I kissed Kristoff..."

"But Elsa's here now. I think, that if you remember the love you feel for your family, it might weaken the magic's hold on you long enough for Elsa to remove it." He turned to Elsa, expecting a response.

Elsa nodded. "You think that'll work?"

"Maybe. Just feeling love alone might not be enough, but it might weaken it, just enough so you can remove it."

Elsa thought about it briefly. "Alright, let's try it."

Immediate, Kristoff laid Anna down, one hand cradling her head while the other held onto her right hand, allowing Elsa to have direct access to her heart. Not wasting any time, Elsa immediately went to work, placing her hands on Anna's heart, feeling for the magic. "OK Anna, now."

Anna closed her eyes, trying to recall all the memories which expressed the love she felt for her family. She began with her early childhood memories. Memories of playing with Elsa with her powers, memories that have since been restored. She remembered the happy memories, and the bad ones... the ice, the isolation, the closed doors, the funeral...

"Anna, focus!" screamed Elsa. She felt the magic bury itself deeper as sadness filled Anna.

"I can't! I can't think straight... it's too hard..." she said, angry at herself.

"It must be the baby" added Jase. "It's making her weaker..."

"It wasn't hard when you jumped in front of that sword!"

Anna nodded, keeping her eyes closed. She focused on what was going through her head at that moment. She was scared. When she saw Kristoff, she saw hope once again. She went to him, but then she heard the 'shing' of a sword. She saw Elsa there, broken, and Hans ready to kill her. All she could remember was seeing her sister, one whom she just now began to understand, about to die. She still didn't understand her, but there was one thing she knew... she loved her...

"It's working!" said Elsa, careful not to shout an distract Anna. "It's loosening its grip... but I still can't get it out. Keep going Anna."

Anna went on to her wedding day. It was one of the happiest days of her life. She was with her husband, her sister, surrounded by the people she loved. She could remember the look in Kristoff's eyes as they recited their vows...

"Keep it up Anna, don't loose it. It has to be stronger!" said Elsa. She was focused entirely on the magic, trying to pull it out.

Stronger? What else could she think of? She already remembered her most powerful memories of love. There were many in-between, but what else could she think of?

"Anna, its going back in!" said Elsa, straining to keep it out. Anna clenched her teeth as the magic went back in.

"Anna!" said Kristoff, holding her head in his hands. "Look at me, don't give up! Do it for the baby... Anna, think about the baby!"

An immediate sense of panic surged through Anna. She thought of the baby, how cold it must be. She remembered how happy she was when she first discovered that she was pregnant. All she could think about was how she was going to care for it, raise it, love it.

That was it. Anna put all of her focus into keeping her baby warm. She thought about how it had to be protected. Using all of her mental capacity, she focused on the love she felt for her family.

"There it is" said Elsa. "I can feel it, it's weakening..."

Anna strained harder, tightening her grip of Kristoff's hand. "I love you" she said.

"I do too" Kristoff replied, returning the squeeze, reassuring her that he was there.

As Anna recalled her love for her new family, Elsa felt the magic loosen even more, to a point where she felt it move freely.

Likwise, Elsa recalled memories of how much she loved her sister, amplifying the effect. She remembered how Anna jumped in front of that sword for her, how Anna was their for her when she lost her powers, how Anna was by her side for so many hardships, even when any other person would have left.

Suddenly, she felt the magic snap away from Anna's heart briefly; that was her chance. Immediately, she slowly pulled it out. Jase and Kristoff watched in awe as blue ice magic emanated from Anna's chest, flowing out as Elsa pulled it out...

Lars was slowly regaining consciousness. He slowly lifted his aching head, trying to pull himself up. As his vision cleared, a blue aurora caught his eyes. He turned his head to the left. Across the room, he saw a blurry vision of blue energy. As his vision cleared, he saw Elsa hunched over Anna, Kristoff at her side while Jase stood over them. He watched as Elsa pulled the ice magic from Anna's heart, something that was supposed to be impossible.

"No" he said to himself in disbelief. This, this cannot be... it cannot be her..."

But his eyes were not deceiving him. Indeed, Elsa was successfully removing the magic from Anna's heart.

"'...Something only love can undo'" he said to himself.

Elsa kept her focus on the magic as it left Anna's body. As it left, Anna's hair faded back to its natural red color. Feeling substantially warmer, Anna opened her eyes, seeing the glowing magic before her. Feeling the magic leave entirely, Elsa pushed into the air above, where it formed a large snowflake. Within seconds, it dispersed into nothingness. The magic gone, Elsa looked back down at Anna, who was quickly leaning up, grabbing her hair in front of her face. It was red.

"It's gone!" she cried. "Elsa! You did it, you saved me!" she screamed, lunging at Elsa, pulling her into a tight embrace. Elsa nearly fell backwards, but held her balance as she returned the hug.

"Yeah, I guess I did."

"You saved me, you saved my baby! Oh, Elsa, thank you! Thank you! I love you! I don't know what I'd do without you" she cried, balling happy tears.

Elsa patted her back. She was overwhelmed in joy that Anna and the baby were going to be alright after such a close call. Once again, love had thawed a frozen heart, with help from Elsa's gift. It wasn't as powerful as the first time, but between the two of them and Elsa's mastery over her gift, they found enough to save Anna's life once again, and the baby. "Of course. I'm here for you, always."

Elsa looked behind Anna, seeing Kristoff stand up, waiting patiently for Anna to pull away. When she finally did, Kristoff helped her up, grabbing her into a tight hug.

"I'm going to be fine! The baby's going to be fine!" she cried into Kristoff's shoulder.

He patted her back. "I didn't have a doubt" he said, looking at Elsa. His eyes were enough to convey how grateful he was.

And so, the family stood there, relishing in thanksgiving. They heard sniffling behind them. He was covered in dust and snow, but he was otherwise completely fine.

"(sniff) That was... (sniff) the most beautiful thing I ever saw in my life!" said Wes, lifting his mask slightly to blow his nose on a handkerchief. "Oh, the feels!"

I love happy endings, don't you?... Don't worry, its not over yet.

Thanks everyone for the reviews (almost to a hundred!).

I have heard the rumors of a sequel, but Idina Menzel retracted her statement, saying she just assumed they were working on one. Will they eventually make a full one? I believe so, but only if the directors wish to do so. John Lasseter, the head of animation at Disney, said that it would never be made unless Buck and Lee want to come back, to protect the quality, and they won't mandate them to make one. I think it won't happen for a while, but that it will happen. And when it does, it's going to be epic, smashing every record into the dust! Most of the cast already expressed there wishes to return for a sequel (just watch the Oscars!)
