Derek lay on the operating table.

His shirt was gone.

His stomach bloody, his wound now visible.

"I won't die," Derek breathed. "I promise."

His eyes were half open, his breathing heavy.

"Good," I cried softly, my hand holding his. "'Cause that would be the worst breakup ever."

Derek laughed, a heavy, breathy chuckle that caused him so much pain his eyes clenched shut.

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry," I apologized.

He was losing consciousness.

"Mer," Cristina said from the doorway. "It's time."

After Ryan got dressed, her met Zola back in the living room.

"I'm gonna call my parents," he admitted. Zola nodded and placed the diary in her lap. "You're still reading that thing?"

Zola nodded. "Mhm."

"Listen..." Ryan started and trailed off, scratching his head nervously. "I'm uh... I'm really sorry about the whole... well what I told you... before you left..."

"It's fine,"Zola stopped him. "I mean... what are you going to do about it? It's over with."

Ryan sat closer to her, raised an eyebrow, smirked. "Is it?"

"Yes," Zola said sternly. "It is."

I was made to sit in the scrub-in room.

Cristina made April Kepner sit with me, and she cried the whole time.

I wasn't allowed to turn around.

Behind me, Derek could be dying, dead even, but I couldn't look or hear.

I sat in a room filled with April Kepner's sobs.

"Stop crying," I told her. "That is my husband in there and my best friend is operating on him. You are not allowed to cry."

Her face scrunched up. "Reed was my best friend," she got out and my heart sank into my stomach. "She died today."

For the first time, against everything I'd ever felt towards Kepner,I felt my heart go out to her.

I reached my hand between us and quietly clasped hers tightly.

We were in this mess together.

Zola felt Ryan staring at her and she quickly stood. "What are you doing?" she demanded.

"I uh... I didn't want to interrupt, but can I use your phone?"

Zola sighed. "It's Tuck's phone. Go ahead."

Ryan thanked her and headed into the kitchen. A moment later, he heard her speaking quietly.

"Hey it's me. I lost my cell phone. I need to talk to you. Call me back on this number please."

Ryan walked back over to Zola. "I'm sorry things have been so hard for you," Zola said.

Ryan shrugged. "Well it happened."

Zola nodded, hugging herself subconsciously. She stepped closer to him.

"I really am sorry," she said.

Before she could stop him, Ryan leaned in and kissed her.

A/N: I know this is a super short chapter. I am leaving tomorrow for vacation for a month and only had time to write this. Hopefully this will hold you over until I get back. Next month, when I am back, I will update.
