Chapter 29: Battle
The battle was intense and tiring. The sounds of cries, screeches, grunts and clashing metal rang loudly through out the clearing. Bodies were spread all over the place and if one were to see the bodies later, they would think a battle took place for days when in actuality it only took minutes.
Legolas fired his arrows as fast as he could, his fingers aching as he pulled back each arrow on his bow. He realized that even though he was an archer, it was apparent that it had been way too long since he used this weapon. What frustrated him was the fact that he couldn't remember when the last time was. He was grateful for the fact that he still had muscle memory and he didn't have to think all that hard on how to use it.
The Elf fired another arrow at an Orc that was approaching Gimli from behind, but he didn't stop to see if his arrow hit his mark. His instincts told him that he would and continued on to the next target. He fired several more shots, when he suddenly saw an Orc that was being pinned by Aragorn to a tree. Another Orc was sneaking up behind the Ranger. Legolas quickly reached back, his fingers seeking for an arrow. He was confused for a moment when his fingers didn't close around one. He glanced back and stared in horror. The quiver was empty; he had used all of his arrows already.
Legolas growled in frustration and stared at where Aragorn was, still unaware of the danger approaching. He dropped his bow onto the ground and pulled out the two Ivory handled knives from their sheaths. He stared at them, unsure on what to do with them. Legolas suddenly noticed the blades moving slightly and stared at it confused. 'Why are they shaking? They aren't supposed to do that.' His eyes widened as he realized what it was. 'Fear.' The one word flashed across his mind. He was afraid that he couldn't fight.
Legolas looked at the Ranger and took a breath. 'Get a grip. Aragorn has done so much for me, now it is time for me to pay him back.' He gripped the handles tighter, taking note on how hot and sweaty his palms have become. He took another deep breath. 'All right, you can shoot a bow; surely you can fight with these. I just have to trust that my muscles know what they are doing.' He took one last breath then he darted into the chaos.
Legolas ran as fast as he could, dodging other combat when he could and stabbing Orcs who got in his way. There was 50 feet between Aragorn and the spot that he had been standing at. He took a second to look around. He had gone only 5 feet. He pushed himself faster. He had to reach Aragorn in time.
The battle was extremely loud. The noises hurt his ears, but he continued to push through the deadly throng, regardless. Legolas looked up and saw that he was almost there. He ran as hard as he could, he wouldn't allow himself to be too late.
Suddenly four Orcs appeared in front of the Elf, causing Legolas having to skid to a stop. He looked just behind the Orcs and saw Aragorn. Fear clenched his heart when he saw the Orc behind the Ranger had already begun to raise its' sword. Legolas looked at the beasts in front of him and raised his knives, already slick with blood.
The four Orcs charged at the same time, Legolas took the advantage and swung his knives blocking and moving the blades in the middle out of the way. As soon as the blades were clear, he jumped, using his hands on two of the Orcs' shoulders, he cartwheeled over the line. As soon as his feet touched the ground, he kept running toward the Orc that was about to strike.
Legolas mentally counted the distance as he drew closer. '15 feet….10 feet….5 feet.' The Elf flung himself at the Orc, tackling him to the ground. The two began to wrestle when they hit the ground, trying to better the other. It didn't take long for Legolas to finally get the upper hand and quickly killed the beast.
He sighed and looked at Aragorn to be sure that he was all right. He took note of the dead Orc lying on the ground behind the Ranger. He was relieved to see that he had made it in time.
Legolas's entire focus was on how relieved he was, he didn't notice two beings sneaking up behind him. A sudden explosion of pain on the back of his head informed him that he was in danger. He turned to meet the threat but a sudden wave of vertigo hit him. He tried to steady himself, but his world seemed to be tilting every which way. The last thing he remembered was seeing the two beings advancing on him before his entire world was covered in darkness.
