Chapter Twenty-Nine
Nobody was talking.
I was perfectly fine with this, and I didn't feel as awkward as I would have if Law had been in the room. He was actually currently in a different room with Mihawk, discussing whatever it is that men discuss at times like this. I sat in a room with Nate, Penguin, Shachi, Bepo, Zoro, and the pink haired girl, whose name I had yet to learn. All I knew was that Mihawk called her 'Ghost Girl', and she didn't feel the need to correct him with her real name.
Maybe her name was Ghost Girl...
Anyways, I was thankful for the silence because it gave me time to mentally break down and really think about what had transpired between Law and I back in the submarine. He seemed to hate me! I never got any clues or hints that he would do something like that! I thought he hated me and was constantly pissed off at me because I would never listen to him. So, his sudden kiss really had me spooked.
Did I even kiss back? I don't remember if I did or not. I don't even think that I had enough time to kiss him back! He pulled away so fast that I probably just let it happen and didn't even move.
Wait a second...
Is that why he pulled back? What if he was actually kissing me for a long time, but I never kissed back, so he got frustrated and pulled away? Law was probably thinking that I felt the same way that he did and I would kiss back, so when I didn't, he was confused and pulled back.
But...how exactly did he feel? It's not like he could do something cliché and love me. After all, I had only known him for a few weeks, and that was hardly enough time for someone to fall in love. Did he just like me? Did I like him? I mean sure, Law was very attractive and he had tattoos, which was something that seemed to add to his air of attractiveness.
Is my life turning upside down all because of Law? I can't even look him in the eye anymore, let alone be in the same room without blushing like an idiot and trying to look anywhere but at him. Why can't I—?
"Why are you so red, Freak?" Nate was leaning over the table and had a hand to my forehead, narrowing his eyes and studying my face. I was now aware of the fact that my cheeks were burning because of my thoughts, and everyone in the room was staring at me—some harder than most. "Are you getting sick? I'll have you know that if you are, I refuse to take care of you. I'll get Law to—"
My cheeks seemed to get warmer at the mention of Law, and I hurriedly pushed Nate's hands off my face and shook my head, hoping the actions didn't seem too suspicious. "I do have a small headache, but I'm fine." I lied about the headache because I was scared that they would all read into my actions too much.
Penguin and Shachi seemed excited all of a sudden, and I was nearly knocked out of my chair as they both ran up and grabbed each of my shoulders. "Don't worry Mara; I'll nurse you back to health." Penguin pretty much drooled on me, and I had a feeling that the images he was getting in his head were anything by appropriate.
Shachi nodded in agreement, and both the engineers waggled their eyebrows at me. "I'll help you bathe if you need me to."
I shook my head and pushed both of them away from me with a chuckle. "I'm fine guys, stop being weird. Zoro looks like he's gonna blow a fuse if you keep suggesting things."
The green haired swordsman blushed and looked away, but his hand was still gripping the hilt of one of his swords. I smirked, but didn't say anything as the pink haired Ghost Girl floated over to him and started to make fun of his pink cheeks.
She was unceremoniously shoved away and the silence returned.
"What do you think they're talking about?" Nate asked in the silence, gesturing to the door with his head. We all knew he meant Law and Mihawk, so there was no need to clarify. "Maybe they're gonna just hand you over to this Raven guy because you're so annoying."
I reached a hand out and connected my fist to his forehead, sending his chair backwards and him landing on his back. "They wouldn't do that..." I thought a moment, and then made a face. "Well, I don't think they would..."
The door opened slowly—kind of in a creepy manner, if I do say so myself—and revealed the Shichibukai and pirate captain that were in question. Mihawk walked in first, followed by Law, and they were both glaring at me.
"Well shit, maybe you were right, Nate." Penguin and Shachi sobbed that someone as beautiful as me couldn't die, Zoro lifted a brow, and Ghost Girl seemed to just stare at everyone with her wide eyes. Nate smirked and stuck his tongue out at me, now situated in his chair again.
Law's glare intensified and Mihawk cocked a brow. "Mara, I would like you to explain why this Raven is after you."
I pursed my lips and looked between the two glaring men. "You mean I didn't tell either of you?" Law rolled his eyes at my obvious false confusion, and Mihawk looked read to draw his sword. I held up my hands in surrender and chuckled nervously. "No need to get so angry—I'll tell you."
The two men sat at the table now. I had time to take Law in now, and I couldn't help but blush when his eyes met mine. I felt as though if this were any other situation, the fact that all of them were huddling around the table for story time would have been a hilarious sight to behold. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time to laugh as Law's glare and frown combination reeked of my impending doom, and Mihawk's normal angry face seemed...angrier.
"Well, I guess I should start by saying that I believe the first time I met Raven was a few months after I started living with Ace and Luffy in Foosha." Law seemed to want to interrupt like he had earlier on the sub—the memory bringing another strong blush to my cheeks—but I held up a hand and furrowed my brows. "This information is important, so just listen or else you'll get confused...please." I added the last part so I wouldn't get my head chopped off. "Anyways, Raven approached me on the beach one day when I left the house—I didn't really get along with my brothers yet, and they were being mean to me, so I left. He talked to me at first about the weather and the boats and some other random shit. He seemed kind of weird right off the bat..."
I thought back to his odd mannerisms—the way he would stare a little too long and how he would twitch his hands towards me, as if he were preparing to grab me and run. His hair was very dirty back then, hanging in greasy black tendrils from his head, resting in a nappy ponytail at the base of his neck. His clothes were clean enough, although I can't remember exactly what he was wearing.
"Keep talking, Panther D. Mara, or I will throw you into the ocean."
Mihawk's voice startled me back to the present, and I gave a nervous chuckle before continuing with my story.
"Sorry about that...anyway, he was a real oddball, and when he attacked me, I guess I shouldn't have been as surprised as I was. I can't really remember all that happened, all I can tell you is that I ended up on the ground with a foul taste in my mouth and a stomach ache, and Raven was gone. Ace and Luffy had run out of the trees with sticks, and since Lu was already rubber, I guess Raven freaked out even more and ran."
"What did he do?" Law prompted, seeming somewhat intrigued by the story—more so than I thought he would have been.
I sighed heavily and frowned at the memory. "It took us a week to find out—we went fishing with the Mayor, Ace and I, and I fell off the boat. And I sunk. It turns out that Raven force-fed me my Devil Fruit." There were many looks ranging in the group—anger to shock to confusion—but I continued, concluding with the answer to the original question. "I ran into Raven a few times—he contacted me a few times with letters—and it turns out he wanted to feed me the Fruit, wait until I grew up, have babies with me, and grow old together...even though he was already old when I was little, but those were his plans nonetheless."
"That's so fucking disgusting freak!" Nate shouted, standing from the table with a pink face ever since the mention of making babies. Shachi and Penguin were crying now, whimpering about how someone beat them to their ideas. Zoro's reaction was subtle, but noticeable. His jaw clenched and the grip on the hilt of his sword tightened considerably.
"When I ran from him and got to the Archipelago, he caught me and decided that if he couldn't have me, no one would. So, he turned me in to the Marines and planned on me getting executed. If it hadn't been for Luffy and the Straw Hats, I would be a headless corpse at the bottom of the ocean and all of this wouldn't be happening."
An extremely heavy silence filled the room now. At some point, Ghost Girl left the room. Shachi and Penguin were sniffling on the floor, Nate and Zoro were looking murderous, and Law and Mihawk had blank looks. They were so hard to read, which kind of scared me. What if they decide to just give me up? I'll have to fight them off, on top of the Heart Pirates, Zoro, those damn monkeys that Mihawk had, Ghost Girl, Raven, and if he brings people, then them too! I won't be able to do all that!
Mihawk stood.
Law stood.
They exited the room together with seemingly no conversation or signal between the two.
"Mara, you and this crew are staying here on the island tonight. We have planning to do."
Was it just me, or did Mihawk's words seem a little...ominous?
And then leave it to Nate to break an awkward silence with an awkward statement. "Well, it looks like we're having a slumber party."
"Gee whiz, Nathaniel!" I reached to slap him, but he weaved out of the way and smirked. "Well, I have a terrible headache and I would really like some sleep. Are we staying here in the castle?"
Penguin stood from the floor and looked ready to pee his pants. "There is no way in Hell I'm walking around this island while it's dark outside!" Shachi stood and wholeheartedly agreed with his best friend, and I laughed at their baby-like attitude.
"Do you have a Den-Den Mushi around here?" Nate asked, addressing Zoro who looked ready to fall asleep at the table. I smiled softly, thinking how some things never changed. "We need to contact our crew and let them know to just set up down in the Sub while we're here." Zoro glared at the brown-haired Heart Pirate with as much hatred as he could muster in his tired state, and then stood from the table and walked away from the room.
We all watched his go, and I leaned closer to Nate who was still on the other side of the table. "Do you think he's getting the Den-Den Mushi?" My whisper was anything but quiet, which angered him, resulting in a flick on my forehead and a playful glare.
"Shut up freak."
A/N: Okay, so I am an absolutely terrible person and I have no excuses for not updating in forever. I have just been extremely lazy and literally just finished the chapter. If you hate me now, go ahead and pretend to punch me in the face. I have blonde hair and blue eyes with a mole on my right eye brow. See, now you have a mental image of my face so you can really punch it!
Anyways, I really do apologize and I will work hard on another chapter this weekend. "Oh, but you said that a lot of other times and didn't live up to that promise!" Uh, bitch, I didn't promise anything, so SHUT UP!
All in all, I suck a life, I suck at updating, and I suck at writing. Go ahead and review to tell me what else I suck at...and also tell me how much you hate this story ^_^
Love you guys though...I really do! See you soon (I HOPE)
