Meanwhile on the plane, they were getting closer to the Fridge. The clock was ticking.
Agent Jacobson walked out of the cockpit and nodded to Agent Hand. "Course is locked ma'am."
"Good…He's not telling stories now, is he?" Hand stated, confidently.
No. Something to be grateful for, Ward thought to himself. He said nothing, only half-listening to Hand talk, focusing on what he'd have to do soon.
"You know what I'm thinking, Agent Garrett? I'm thinking the Icebox of the Fridge is a little too comfortable for you" Hand told him.
Ward didn't visibly react, but Hand's words had started racing through his mind. She didn't mean…
"Maybe we should put you a little deeper underground." Hand announced, getting Garrett's attention.
"What do you think, Agent Ward? You shot the wrong Clairvoyant before. Care to shoot the right one?" Hand inquired.
Ward knew it was exactly the opening he needed to take. The opening John would expect him to take. He was shocked that Agent Hand was being so abrupt, so ruthless. He really hadn't expected this. Ward didn't need to make a show of thinking it over...because he was. He should kill the Guards and Hand, get it over with now. But…if Kayla found out...found out that he was HYDRA…
He looked over at John who was staring intensely at Ward, probably wondering what was taking him so long. It seemed to click after a moment, and his gaze grew dark. He knew what Garrett was saying, if he didn't kill them, Garrett would tell everyone he was HYDRA anyway. He probably already had a backup just in case a problem like this arose. So he'd get the last laugh as always. But if he didn't kill John, if he helped him…he knew what Garrett would do next. Capture Kayla. HYDRA was very interested in her abilities, not just John. Did that mean even if he killed him HYDRA would still come after Kayla? Probably, he thought to himself. Ward stood up, drew his gun, switched off the safety and met John's eyes. He saw the expectant glint in them, wondering if anyone else saw it. He had to do his job. He had to save John. He had to help him survive. He had to repay him. He owed him. Ward stood there, the gun still aimed at John, but he didn't move. Five seconds. Ten seconds. Fifteen seconds. Twenty seconds.
"Get it over with" Garrett insisted, the double meaning catching Ward's attention.
Ward had always prided himself on his ability to make decisions quickly and effectively. But now he couldn't decide. Why did John have to blow his cover and force Ward into this position?
"You owe me…everything" Garrett said, emphasizing the last word.
Taking in a deep breath, he moved his gun's position and shot the two Agents sitting next to Garrett. He then looked over at Agent Hand and shot her. She fell to the floor, still alive. So he moved over to her and shot her twice in the head. He had made his choice a long time ago, he couldn't change it now.
The team had soon fled the base when a US General said he would be arriving, and they were now flying in the air.
"Sir, have you heard anything from Ward? He and Agent Hand should have dropped Agent Hand off at the Fridge by now" Kayla inquired, obviously worried.
"Not yet. Here give him a call, hearing how Garrett settled into his tiny, windowless, permanent home might actually cheer me up" Coulson stated, giving her the phone.
She then proceeded to quickly call Ward, who was looking over plans with Garrett.
"It's Coulson" He told Garrett.
"By all means" Garrett replied, as Ward picked up.
"Sir, is everything alright?" Ward asked.
"Hey, it's me. Everything going well?" Kayla questioned.
"Hey Kayla. Agent Hand picked up some navy jets in the vicinity, she says we're taking the long route to the Fridge. Just to be safe" Ward informed her.
"Okay…well we've left the Hub, some trigger happy Colonel wanted to pay a visit, so Coulson's evacuated us before the guy could lock us all up. Now Skye's scrubbing everyone's I.D's while Coulson figures out our next move" Kayla explained.
"You have any idea where Coulson has us headed?" Ward asked.
"No idea, I'll keep you posted" Kayla replied.
"Good. I'll catch up with you when I can" Ward told her.
"Oh and Trip's come along for the ride" Kayla grinned.
"Oh, has he now?" Ward questioned, his jaw tightening slightly.
"Ah I knew it, there's that jealously again" Kayla laughed.
"Pft. I'm not jealous" Ward insisted.
"Totally are" Kayla giggled.
"I miss you" He told her.
"I miss you too. So you better come back in one piece alright? Or I'm going to be mad" She announced.
"Yes, ma'am" Ward grinned.
"Be careful" Kayla said, with a small smile.
"You too. I…I'll see you soon" Ward replied, as he hung up.
"What was that about?" Garrett inquired.
"What? Nothing" Ward said, dismissing it.
"That straight version of you is something else. I don't even think Romanoff could pull that one" Garrett laughed.
"Well it wasn't without its complications" Ward stated.
"Oh come on, you're not still upset about that" Garrett groaned.
"Kidnapping Kayla and experimenting on her was not part of the plan" Ward retorted.
"Near zero contact, that was the deal going in…though your tip about the cellist came in handy. If you had a thing for the girl, you should have contacted me. I would have asked for your blessing" Garrett explained.
"Don't play your games with me. This isn't a joke" Ward said, starting to get angry.
"You don't have to tell me. Your little candy crush has been on our radar for a long time. We need those powers...Listen, if the job was easy, it wouldn't-" Garrett was quickly cut off by Ward.
"Yeah, the job was to blend in, gather intel on Coulson's revival. That's it. You said yourself you didn't want any bloodshed" Ward argued.
"That was before I found out Coulson didn't know squat. You know, you would have had an easier time if I gave the kill order week one" Garrett exclaimed.
"Yeah. But you didn't" Ward retorted.
"The girl I get. She's cute. But don't forget what the assignment was. Don't forget who gave it to you. And don't forget why. And cheer up! We're close...closer than ever" Garrett said, patting him on the back.
Author's Notes: I hope you all enjoyed this chapter! This was really depressing to write, why couldn't Ward be good?:( Okay, so lots of people have been messaging me to tell you how I feel about all the AOS characters before and after season 3 and who's my favorite etc. so here goes: 1. Ward, obviously, he's pretty much the reason I started watching this show and is the reason why I still watch it, even though I have to admit he's an asshole sometimes. 2. Fitz, he grew on me so much in season 2, I love his character development (and the fact that he's pretty much the only non asshole character). 3. Skye, she was another reason why I started this show and I loved her throughout season 1, she was hilarious. However, in season 2 I feel like her character has gone downhill quite a lot and she bugs me sometimes, but she's still got a place in my heart. 4. Hunter, I just find him really funny, plus he has a British accent that's not ridiculously posh (thank you!). He is actually quite an interesting character as well. 5. Bobbi, mainly because she's so badass and I love that. She gets on my nerves sometimes and I didn't like how she acted towards Kara (why did she have to die?!) but overall she's still pretty likeable. 6. Simmons, I used to love her character in season 1 and loved her relationship with Fitz, but this season she was another character who wasn't written well and don't get me started on the whole trying to kill Ward thing. I think her storyline in season 3 could be quite interesting though. 7. Mack, I like his relationship with Fitz and the fact that he looked out for him but to be honest, I think he's kind of boring and irrelevant (sorry). 8. Melinda-we've all had our traumas, it didn't turn any of us into psychopaths-May. First of all, Ward is more of a sociopath than a psychopath, second of all, fuck you. Um, yeah I don't like May very much. Sorry. 9. Coulson. Why is he the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D? Literally anyone would be better. I just want to write the quote 'The road to hell is paved with good intentions' all over his office. He needs to stop. Sorry again, but I don't like him. (Screw him for forcing Tahiti onto people when he knows how horrible it is). WHY DID THEY KILL TRIP OFF? I MISS HIM:( Sorry if I upset anyone with this, its just my opinion, I know lots of people will feel very differently. Please leave a review and tell me what you think:)
