It's hard to see through hearts that bleed
It's hard to see
Now she paints pictures of her dreams
But today they don't include me
Too many mistakes I've made
Too many times I've betrayed
She says
I don't want to waste my life
Hating every god damn day away
It had been 2 days since the full moon and everyone was trying to return to normal. The ritual had happened, Jenna had died and Elena had been sacrificed but because of a spell that John had found, tying their life force together, she had lived but in return John had died. Klaus had also escaped, Elijah double crossing them and taking off with his brother.
Kenzie had gone to the funeral, the guilt almost overwhelming her, knowing it should have been her but Alaric, Jeremy, and most importantly Elena did not blame her. No one could have known and Kenzie had done what Elena had told her to do, run. But still Jenna was gone and the Gilbert teens were left without a guardian now.
Damon had been at the funeral but she never got a chance to talk to him. He had walked away at one point and when she went to follow, Stefan had stopped her, saying he would go instead. Both disappeared soon after and Kenzie's attempts to contact him had proved futile. Finally she had said hell with it and went over to his place to figure out what the hell was going on in his head.
When she arrived, Damon was just stepping up to a nearby window, nothing unusual about that until she saw him start burning. She screamed for Stefan as she ran across the room, tackling him to the ground. He still wasn't completely out of the sun and Kenzie used her body to cover what parts were still in the sun as Stefan came running in and shut the curtains.
"What the hell was that about?" Kenzie demanded to know.
Stefan grabbed the front of his brothers shirt and pushed him up against the wall. "Kenzie, I need you to go find his ring."
"But what-"
"Please." Stefan cut her off.
She stared at them both a moment longer, noticing Damon wouldn't even look at her and slowly went back into the room to look for his ring. She finally found it on the floor and when she returned to where she had left the guys, they were no longer there. She listened for them and finally heard a door closing in the cellar, she rushed down there to see Stefan standing outside of a door, talking to a locked up Damon.
"I'm gonna find a way out of this."
"Oh, right. A miracle cure. Good luck with that one." Damon replied.
"A cure for what?" Kenzie asked.
"Great." Damon muttered as Stefan turned to her, looking extremely upset.
Kenzie placed a hand on her hip as she cocked her head to the side. "What's going on?"
"I'm dying, Red." Damon called out to her. "Might as well come say your good-byes now."
Kenzie stared at Stefan, waiting for him to deny it and when he didn't, she lifted a hand to her mouth, covering a strangled cry.
"Why is he dying?" She cried. "He can have my blood, it'll make him better, right?"
Stefan guiltily looked away, "Tyler bit him, it won't help but Bonnie is looking into it. She's looking for something, anything."
"No." She whispered as from inside the cellar, Damon began to cough.
Stefan turned back to look at his brother and Kenzie shot forward, undoing the lock and ignoring Stefan's protest as she slipped inside the cell, only to see Damon on his side, coughing up blood.
"Leave." He muttered.
"Get bent." She softly replied as she dropped to her knees, "I'm not leaving."
"Make sure he conserves his strength." Stefan instructed.
"I will." She replied. "Please, find something." She looked up at the younger brother with tears in her eyes. "I can't lose him."
Stefan nodded and left and Kenzie turned back to Damon, trying to keep the tears at bay.
"You stupid, stupid Vampire." She muttered. "After letting the bitch take a huge chunk out of my shoulder so this wouldn't happen, you find another wolf to do it?"
He coughed up more blood before answering her. "Who cares? I deserve it. I took a chunk out of you myself then tried to make Elena a vampire."
She shifted her position so she was sitting by his head, easing it into her lap. "You think I care about any of that right now? All I care about is fixing you, and we will, because you are not allowed to die, I forbid it."
He forced out a small smile. "Well since you forbid it."
"Shh." She whispered. "Rest now."
"K." he murmured before closing his eyes.
Kenzie leaned back against the wall, finally letting the tears fall.
… … …
Kenzie sat with Damon, watching him go in and out of consciousness. She smoothed his hair back, murmuring words to him once in a while but it didn't seem to matter, he was too far gone.
"Katherine." He muttered.
"No." Kenzie whispered.
"Elena?"
"No." She said again. "It's me, Red."
"I promise."
She bit her lip, wondering if he was hallucinating as Damon finally opened his eyes and lifted his arm, pulling up the sleeve. Kenzie gasped at seeing just how bad it was.
"Can I get you anything?" She asked.
"No." He whispered as he stared down at his arm.
"Well that looks bad."
Kenzie looked up to see Alaric there, placing a glass in the little window.
"It feels worse."
"How are you holding up, Kenzie?" the teacher asked.
She gave a ghost of a smile. "Been better."
"Shouldn't you be asking me that?" Damon all but whined. "I'm the one sitting here with a huge bite in my arm, that's killing me."
"He's also hallucinating." Kenzie supplied.
"My subconscious is haunting me Ric, please tell me you have something for that."
"Double shot." He told him, pouring some whiskey into the glass. Kenzie went to stand to get it but Damon grabbed her arm, wanting help up. She struggled to help him stand and helped him over to the door so he could take the glass himself.
"Did my brother send you to help with suicide watch, cause really, Red's doing a bang up job."
"He's just trying to help." Alaric told him.
"He's doing what he always does, trying to right the wrongs of the past." Damon said as he fell against Kenzie and let out a grunt of pain. "You guys should want me dead. I'm the reason Jenna got killed, I almost got you killed Red, I almost did it myself."
"Not this again." Kenzie said. "I told you I don't care what happened and Jenna was really my fault." She glanced up at Ric. "I am sorry."
He shook his head. "I don't blame either of you."
"Oh, sure you do. Let's not forget I turned your wife into a vampire. You must really hate me for that one."
"Okay, give me your glass, neither of us are drunk enough for this conversation."
Damon straightened up, pushing Kenzie into a wall as he reached out an arm, grabbing Alaric around the throat.
"Kill me, please."
"Screw you." Alaric told him, stabbing him with a vervain filled dart.
The petite redhead groaned from where she hit her head against the wall and pushed herself off of it, moving toward Damon who fell to the floor, whispering Elena's name before he was once again unconscious.
"Was that really smart?" Kenzie asked, kneeling beside Damon and trying to ignore the name that just came out of his mouth.
"He's getting violent Kenzie, you need to get out of there."
"I don't want to leave him, even if it's Elena he wants." She tried to keep the bitterness out of her voice but knew she wasn't succeeding.
"Hey." Ric told her. "He's sick and hallucinating, I wouldn't take any of it personally."
"I know." She whispered. "But I still don't want to leave him."
Ric unlocked the door and stepped inside. "Why don't you go freshen up or something, okay? I'll watch him."
She finally nodded and took the hand he held out for her, letting him help her up. She was a little unsteady on her feet, realizing she hit her head harder then she thought but waved off Ric's offer to help, muttering that she would go grab some aspirin and would be back soon.
Kenzie raced up to his room, looking for some aspirin in the bathroom. She knew she had left some there before and when she found some, quickly swallowed them with a glass of water before using the facilities and rushing back downstairs.
She only reached the stairs to the cellar when she heard a commotion coming from down there and moments later, Damon was standing in front of her, not even pausing as his fangs sank into her neck. She began to scream and struggle against him because it hurt, even worse than last time but slowly her struggles began to weaken and when Damon finally released her, she slumped against him, unable to stand up now from so much blood loss.
"Oh god, Kenzie." He muttered, leaning her back as he brushed her hair back. "I'm so sorry Red."
He opened a vein on his wrist and fed it to her, hoping that his blood would still help her, even though it was tainted.
"Damon, stop."
He looked up to see Alaric there and quickly took off, leaving the man to kneel beside Kenzie, whose eyes were fluttering.
"Kenz, come on, you're okay."
"I know." She whispered. "Please, just go save him. I'll catch up."
"You sure?"
She nodded and he quickly left pulling out his phone as he did so. Kenzie turned on her side, groaning as she placed a hand against her neck. She could feel it was healing, a lot slower than usual but Damon's blood was helping. She just hoped it would help quick enough for her to get to Damon.
When she was feeling better, Kenzie knew she had to get to the town square but she knew she would never make it in time. She glanced around, her eyes coming to rest on an object and she stared at it, wondering if she dared. She had an irrational fear of driving but did she really have a choice? Damon was more important right now. With a deep breath, she swiped Damon's keys and jumped in his car, taking one calming breath before she started the car and put it into drive, her driving a little jerky while she swerved before she straightened out and it became a lot smoother. With one hand on the wheel, she pulled out her phone, tying everyone's phones until Jeremy finally answered and told her he was on the way to the Grill with Damon. She promised to meet them there and sped up towards the Grill, praying someone would come up with the cure as soon as possible. She couldn't lose him, she just couldn't and she would do anything to help him.
When she arrived, she pulled up in front of the Grill, leaving the car running. As she placed a hand on the door handle, a gunshot sounded and she jumped in surprise, fear coursing through her when another shot sounded and the window right beside the car shattered. Kenzie only had a split second to shout no in h er mind when the car window shattered and she felt a split second of pain in her head before she started falling sideways. Darkness enveloped her before she even hit the seat.
… … …
When Kenzie woke up, she was still lying in the front seat of Damon's car and she briefly wondered how no one had noticed her. The car was still running and she looked around with a small frown, wondering just how long she had been out of it. What the hell had happened? Why couldn't she remember?
She tried calling everyone's phones again but no one answered this time and she put the car in drive, making her way back to the Salvatore house, hoping they had gotten Damon back there. As she drove, she finally noticed that something was weird with her. She didn't feel like herself and she was thirsty, so thirsty. And why did her head hurt? For the life of her, she couldn't remember what happened this time, why she had woken up outside of the Grill. Her last thought had been to help Damon, so what happened?
When she reached the house, she let herself in and listened to see if she could hear anything. She heard voices coming from upstairs and made her way up there. It was Damon and Elena and when she got closer she could hear their conversation. She stopped in the doorway watching them, Damon leaning against Elena's chest as she held him to her, a wet cloth in her hand. He was covered in sweat and Kenzie knew he didn't have long but she stopped herself from moving forward, instead choosing to listen since neither noticed she was there.
"I've made a lot of choices that have gotten me here. I deserve this. I deserve to die." Damon whispered.
"No you don't." Elena replied, moving so she was hovering over him.
"I do, Elena. It's ok. 'Cause if I'd have chosen differently, I wouldn't have met you. I'm so sorry. Done so many things to hurt you."
"It's okay, I forgive you." She told him.
"I know you love Stefan. And it will always be Stefan."
Elena grabbed his hand, lying her head on his shoulder.
"But I love you. You should know that."
Kenzie slapped a hand over her mouth so she wouldn't cry out as tears came to her eyes. She heard Elena begin to cry as well but Kenzie couldn't care at the moment. In fact, all she could think about was racing in there, pulling Elena away from Damon, and sucking her dry.
As that thought raced through her mind, she quietly gasped, wondering where that had come from. Suddenly, everything that happened began to come back to her and then the realization hit her like a ton of bricks. She touched the side of her head where the pain was coming from, feeling the bullet still in her head and her eyes widened in horror. She glanced back up at the bed in time to see Elena lean over Damon, kissing him and Kenzie backed out of the room until her back hit the wall and she slid down it, unsure if she was going to pass out or be sick as she placed her head on her knees.
"Red?"
It was Katherine but she refused to look up as she shook her head.
"Stay here." Katherine told her and Kenzie peaked up long enough to see her enter the room. She didn't hear the conversation though as the blood rushed to her ears blocking everything out.
Blood. Oh god.
"Red, look at me, what's going on." Katherine knelt in front of her and Kenzie finally looked up, seeing the she vamp gasp as she got a look at her head.
"Help me." Kenzie whispered, begging as tears streamed down her face "There's something wrong with me."
"Oh." Katherine whispered before looking behind her and standing up. She grabbed Kenzie, using her vampire speed to take her downstairs into the living room. She sat her on the couch, kneeling in front of her.
"What's wrong with me?" Kenzie cried.
"Hold still." Katherine commanded her as she reached up to her forehead and dug the bullet out. She watched as the hole slowly began to heal. "Who gave you vampire blood?"
"Damon, after he bit me. Please, what's wrong with me?" She began to cry harder, hoping it wasn't true.
Katherine grabbed Kenzie's head between her hands, forcing the petite girl to look at her. "Mackenzie, look at me. Calm down, okay? You're in transition."
