Grand-Goodbyes

"...Neville, I am sorry my child, I did what I thought was best for you," Augusta Longbottom said softly as she stared straight ahead at her small six year old grandson who was hiding behind his uncle Thomas with deep regret. "I thought that I could manage, when you first came to me I had no idea of just what your other uncle might do to you or..."

"Mother it is alright, I am sure that Neville knows that you are only doing this to look after him," Thomas said softly with a weak smile as he reached down and ran a loving hand though his nephew's hair. "This situation we have found ourselves in is not the fault of one person alone...it is that man's fault for dropping Neville out of the upstairs window, it is your fault for not being able to let go of your grief after so many years, it is my fault for not thinking about stepping up and playing the role of a good brother and uncle..."

"It seems that the exhaustion from the end of the war combined with the tragedy that befell the Longbottom family has clouded our minds," Augusta heaved with a heavy sigh as she leaned heavily on her old walking stick. "Once Upon A Time, when I was a much younger lady I would of enjoyed having Neville around, playing hide and seek, encouraging his strengths and helping him with his weaknesses...but I guess I am no longer the young woman I once was when you and your brother was little."

"...Mother you are doing the right thing, even though I know that you do not want to admit it looking after Neville is nothing like how you gave birth to my brother and I then raised us," Thomas said with a soft sigh as he carefully reached forwards and wiped away the tears that was slowly falling down his mother's face. "Do not cry because Neville's time living with you is over, please smile because it happened. You are doing the right thing for not only yourself and your health but also for Neville."

"I know sweetheart, I know...I trust that you will help Neville become the young man he is meant to be, be it squib or wizard. Now that everything has been sorted out, and that man has been dealt with it is almost as if I am seeing things clearly for the first time," Augusta said with a heavy smile as she reached out and placed her hand on top of her son's still outstretched one. "I knew it would never work out anyway but I had to give it a go, I had to try my best for all of them...and I did not want to bother you or stop you from living that amazing life style that you had managed to create for yourself."

Thomas simply shot the scared and clingy Neville a tired smile. "How many times do I have to tell you that I welcome your presence in my life? In fact I would be more than happy to have you come and stay with us for a month or even a few months. I am sure that Sally and my children would love to have you over."

"Maybe I will come over for a visit, it would help to put my mind at ease about how Neville is settling in," Augusta answered as she realised her son's hand. "But not now...and not for a while. First of all you will need to get Neville settled in and work out a few things, that I am sure of, but maybe a bit later in the year, say around Christmas time?"

"I think that is a wonderful idea, a truly wonderful one. You can spend the Christmas holidays and even the New Year with us all," Thomas said with a forced understanding and happy grin as he allowed his eyes to shine clearly with pain and regret. "But for now...I think that it is time Neville and I got home, it is getting late and I am sure that Sally and the children will be getting worried."

"Very well, thank you for this Thomas," Augusta said as she did her best to pull herself together. With an attempt at looking prim, proper and calm Augusta turned her eyes onto her young grandson. "Look after yourself Neville, be happy, safe and healthy. I want regular updates from you and remember...your Gran loves you dearly no matter how it might seem."

Biting his lower lip nervously, Neville turned his gaze up to his Gran. "I will Gran and...I love you no matter what too. Your my Gran after all."
