Love in the Time of Cholera: The final road

Seattle, Washington. 1986

The truth. God once said "the truth will set you free." Funny, right? How some simple words gain so much power when we apply them to our own lives? Knowing the truth, finding the truth and acting on that truth can be a very complex processes but I suppose if God ever said it then his words were entrusted to be complicated.

The truth will set you free ... sure God had his reasons. Surely the truth seeks to free our soul and spirit out of our hardships and bad feeling but what if ... in such a search for that freedom we end up being prisoners of what we so wished to be free due to everything over which we have no control of.

It's not easy, is it? The interpretation of those words, I bet that God also supposed that. Wanting to know the truth involves facing your fears towards it and moving forward with what you have learned about it, involves preparing yourself for the consequences and acting accordingly. That's where it gets complicated.

Arizona Robbins is not a simple woman, she never was, but she always wished she could be, maybe that way she could understand her daughter's decision. No parent wants to see their children in any potential danger, but she knew that no matter how much she tried to make Elizabeth stay at home and follow the educational plan they had planned, she knew that her daughter will still leave and even so she still was going to love her until God Let her breathe her last.

God. She was not a very believing person of that higher being, considering everything that happens in the world and specifically in her world, meaning, people kill each other for absolutely no reason, people discriminate if it's not for your race is for your sexual orientation or for how you dress, how much money you have and make, where you come from, what religion you profess, what kind of work you have… the list goes on and on and on. Injustice is the daily bread and Arizona Robbins has to admit that she has asked herself more than once "Where is God when all this happens? Where is God when innocent people die every day for stupid wars based on the search for power over others? Where is he?

"He's everywhere." It's something Callie would say if she could hear her thoughts. Callie Torres was always a faithful believer of God and his infinite kindness towards those who follow his word. The brunette would say in response to the constant questions that plague Arizona's mind that everything happens for a reason and that the times of God are perfect ... "Who are we to question his times and actions?" That's something that Calliope Torres would say for sure.

The truth will set you free. How much true in those words? Today would be the day Arizona Robbins will respond to the interpretation of them.

"Dr. Robbins?" Arizona left her train of thought when she heard her secretary's voice. "I'm sorry to bother you, Dr. Robbins, but there's a young woman who wants to see you, she says she's your daughter?" The woman asked clearly confused. Normally the triplets and Simon never referred to the blonde pediatrician as their mother in public, so for all her staff would know, Dr. Robbins only has one daughter and it's Madison, everyone knew the girl, everyone loved her and people knew just because she once mentioned it when she was getting used to having her baby girl closed by .

It was not fair, she knew it, Callie knew it too and of course the kids, but how do you explain to other people that there's a pregnant woman who now lives with another woman who also claims to be the mother of your children? Nobody would understand, everyone would start asking questions, with Maddie it was easy, both women just had to say that Arizona gave her daughter to Callie's care when she was just a baby and that's why the girl looked so much like her blonde mother, but with the triplets and Simon? They were played as the nieces and nephew of Dr. Robbins. Talk about complicated and confusing, there were too many lies and way too hard to explain, but only then they would live something similar to a normal life without the hatred or repudiation of gossipy and intrusive neighbors. Callie and Arizona thought it was the best, but was it? Maybe those lies were making them imprisoned, them and their family, instead of living in freedom with the truth.

Arizona smiled weakly at the obvious confusion in the words of her secretary but decided to let it go. "Tell her to come in, Angie. Thank you." She said politely before fixing her white coat, she had an idea of who this "daughter" could be that came to visit her at her office. The blonde mother heard her laugh and knew immediately, as if she had been waiting for her, she loved that laugh. Seconds later a weak smile came to her lips again when she saw how the apparent joy in her angelic face fell off the minute she entered her office. "Hi, Elizabeth"

"Hi, mom." Lizzie took a deep breath before continuing, she didn't ignore the sadness that was freely expressing in her mother's face and she could not help but think that she put it there. "I think we have a pending conversation and I would like to have it now rather than later." Never known to back down in her decisions, Elizabeth Robin Torres said with purpose.

Arizona narrowed her eyes, resting her elbow on the arm of her chair and resting two of her fingers on her cheek. "Take a seat, child." And so began one of the most feared conversations by the blonde and one of her daughters. Knowing the truth is about facing fears.

On another side of the city, Callie encountered an unpleasant visit just outside her second coffee shop. To say that the brunette was upset was an understatement.

"I told you I did not want you to come here again!" She hissed angrily, Addison took her arm to avoid a confrontation, each time these two came together, nothing good ever came out of it.

The man smiled mischievously at the attitude of the brunette. "Miss Torres, there's no need to be obfuscated, I just came for a coffee, that's all." He smiled again but Callie was not having any of that.

"Oh cut the crap! I know why you're here, Mr. Blake." Callie stepped out of her friend's grip and approached the man in front of her. This man did not intimidate the brunette one bit and she wanted to let him know that no matter what. "You've been trying to take this coffee shop away from me way before I even opened it and as you couldn't, you now come here to do what, exactly?"

"Have a coffee?" Nathaniel Blake responded pretending innocence, he knew what he was doing but in his defense it was not what the brunette was thinking at all but still he was not all that innocence. "Miss Torres, all I want is to have a coffee and if you were so kind to just sit me it would be much better." He insisted, his mischievous smile never leaving his lips.

Callie frowned as did Addison trying to understand the man's intentions. "I think you should get another place to have your coffee Mr. Blake." Addison said through clenched teeth.

Mr. Blake was an educated and charming man, his vibrant personality attracted the attention of other people, especially women, he was a businessman and when Callie started preparations to open the second coffee shop this man was at every step of the way but not encouraging, but trying to win the place where Callie would open 'Triplet's Point', the place has a good location and they knew it that's why they wanted it for their separates business, but Mr. Blake did not always played fair and that's why Callie as did Addison, never liked the guy.

Mr. Blake smiled again at the words of the redhead woman. "Miss Torres, Miss Montgomery, I can assure you that my intentions coming here are not infamous, I just want a coffee, it has become clear that you have won and I have lost, this is a business and in every business there is always a risk, This time it's my loss." Very well spoken Mr. Blake exposed to the two very confused women in front of him. "The invitation to that coffee was only to offer an apology for my behavior and to present myself to a possible ally if needed." The man smiled again.

"Mmm very tempting, but no thanks." Callie replied quickly, "Now if you excuse me, I have things to do, Mr. Blake." She said passing the tall man to the side with Addison.

The charming man smiled broadly at Callie's words raising his hands in surrender. "I will be here anyway if you ever need help, Miss Torres." He sent a wink to the women before entering the coffee shop without further words.

Once the man was inside the coffee shop, the redhead broke the silence. "It was me or was Mr. Blake flirting with you?" Addison asked confused. "Again? After everything you said to him?"

Callie gave a roll of eyes to her partner in business before answering. "He has never flirted with me. You're the one who always says that." She turned around to keep walking but the words of her friend stopped her again.

"Yeah, sure, a blind person could see it, Callie." Addison crossed her arms, as if it's possible that her dear friend did not notice something that was so obvious.

"Addison ..." Callie was about to answer her friend when another woman's voice was heard.

"Excuse me? ..." A thin ginger woman interrupted the conversation. "Can you tell me if you have seen my father?" Addison shook her head, all she could think about was the many freckles this woman has on her face.

"And who is your father?" Callie asked.

"Oh sorry, my father, Nathaniel Blake, he told me to see him in this coffee shop but now I'm not so sure." The woman smiled.

"Oh he just came in, you'll find him there." Callie offered a polite smile back.

"Thank you, Miss…"

"Calliope Torres, but you can call me, Callie."

Callie could see how the woman in front of her changed all of her facial expression. That was strange. "Oh you are the Callie Torres that my father speaks so much about!" The woman said before approaching the brunette a little more. "It's really a pleasure to meet the woman who could beat my father in his own business, my name is Penelope Blake, but you can call me Penny." Her smile never leaving her face, she offered her hand to the brunette in front of her. "Something tells me that you and I will be good friends, Miss Torres." Callie smiled genuinely at the boldness of this young woman before accepting her hand.
