The start of November was the coldest one on record since Lily had been born. Already snow had lain on the ground and snow storms continued to happen all over the country. It had been predicted by the muggle news that the weather conditions would continue this way until the start of December. The weather conditions had made Lily's job as a healer very stressful due to the number of people who had fallen in after ice skating on frozen lakes and were being treated for hypothermia as well as people slipping on icy cobblestones in Diagon Alley and breaking a bone. But the weather wasn't the only factor that was making her job stressful.
The number of Death Eater attacks had risen in the past few weeks. Lily, who only worked daytime shifts, had been expected to do double shifts because of the amount of people who had survived death but were severely injured. One little girl, whose parents had been killed by Death Eaters, had been admitted to St Mungo's after being blasted through a concrete wall during the attack. Luckily for the little girl, the Aurors had shown up before she was killed and she was now officially under the protection of the Minister for Magic.
Lily, having had enough of the pressure, decided to quit her job. She already had a lot of stress through her missions for the order and trying to start a family with James, she felt that more stress would make her ill. No-one questioned her decision to leave St Mungo's. However there was some happy news for the group. Only a week ago, Alice and Frank had announced that they were expecting their first baby in the middle of July.
Everyone had been excited at Alice and Franks news, although Sirius had said that he liked it when he could hand the child back to it's parents, you couldn't do that if it was your own child. Marlene had agreed with him. Both of them didn't really want their own children, they preferred other 's why Lily thought that her best friend was well suited to Sirius. Marlene and Sirius had quite a lot in common when it came to topics such as children for example. They were just two people who preferred children that weren't their own.
Remus and Mary seemed to be heading in the right direction when it came to their relationship. It had been hard for the two of them but the pair seemed happier than ever. Although the two of them giving their relationship another try had ended Remus's friendship with Hestia, who didn't approve of his decision to get back with Mary. Alice had said that it was obvious that Hestia was jealous, having seen Mary get into a relationship with Mark, she had hoped that Remus would move on too with her. Mary had agreed with them, after all Hestia had tried to get Mary to leave.
Peter had announced to the group that he had a 'new job' working in the a little shop in Diagon Alley with the possibility of a new shop opening in Cornwall and he may have to move there if the plans went ahead. Everyone was happy for him, it was a rarity if something good happened to Peter. Although Peter knew it was because the Dark Lord wanted him to go along with other Death Eaters to raid houses of those who had refused to join the dark forces. He had, so far, been successful to cover up his involvement in the Death Eater attacks.
It was a frosty morning during the second week of November, it had stopped snowing and Lily's heart was racing fast with nerves. She was sat on the edge of the bathtub holding a pregnancy test. She was over a week late now for her period and was awaiting the results of the test. She hoped with all her being that it would be positive.
She and James had been trying for months and so far, had been unsuccessful to fall pregnant. The healers had said when she had consulted them on starting a family that it could take months for her to get pregnant, it depended on the person. Lily was starting to get wound up, she desperately wanted a child.
There was also the factor of her elder sister. Petunia had written a letter sending her apologies about her news and to also pass along the happy news that she and Vernon were expecting a baby. Lily felt crushed, it was almost as if Petunia was boasting that she had something that Lily didn't. Like Petunia finally saw them as even. Ever since Lily had started Hogwarts, Petunia had always been jealous that Lily was the only one who was a witch. It almost felt like Petunia was having her revenge.
She started fidgeting on the edge of the bath, three minutes was too long when you were expecting life changing news. If she was pregnant, it would be the best thing to happen to her since she had got together with James. If she wasn't, she'd have to try again and again until she could tell James the happy news that they were both eager for.
Finally she got the answer she wanted, as she glanced down at the test she saw two vertical lines. The test was positive. Beaming widely, she opened the bathroom door and ran downstairs, pregnancy test in hand. Her heart was jumping for joy in her chest, she and James were having a baby.
Lily rushed into the kitchen where James was sat talking to Remus. She didn't care that Remus was there, she needed James to know the good news. The two of them looked at her from the kitchen table when Lily excitedly placed the pregnancy test in front of James.
Remus and James looked down at the pregnancy test.
"Is that what I think it is?" asked Remus curiously.
James stared at the test for a moments before looking up at Lily with the biggest grin she had ever seen on his face.
"Are we?" he asked.
Lily nodded and returned his grin, "We're having a baby!" she exclaimed happily.
James rose from his seat before Lily could blink. James wrapped his arms around her and lifted her off her feet, spinning her happily around the kitchen. Remus smiled at his two best friends, happy that something wonderful could bring two people in love closer together during these hard times.
