Celia remembered when Aiden used to be fun. Looking at him now sat in the booth he frequently claimed as his own with his remaining half pint of Guinness, glaring up at the TV on the back wall of Charlie's; Aiden looked like he had never had any fun in his life. If anything he often looked like he had no life in him at all and Celia knew why. Celia hadn't been out of prison long when it happened, but toward the end of 2012; Aiden and some members of his family were involved in a pretty shady car accident that took the life of his six year old niece Lena. At the time and as much as she would have liked to get back in touch with Aiden and offer her condolences; Celia stayed away. And she felt bad for it. But as she thought of it as she looked at him over from the table of college boys she was serving, she knew the whole experience had much more than a profound effect on him. It had torn him to pieces. Aiden had is issues like any other person but his in some cases were more amplified. Celia guessed the reason why Aiden was visiting her more and more at her work and at home these days was because he was exhausted and needed to be around someone who understood him. He always had his guard up but when he and Celia were alone, he relaxed.
Celia kept her eyes on Aiden as she rushed around the bar tending her tables. He'd smile at her whenever she walked past his booth and every so often when she noticed that he had finished his pint; she would bring him a fresh one over. Celia wondered again why Aiden had been spending so much time around her. He had been in Charlie's several nights over the past few weeks since he took her to the warehouse for her "surprise". He'd come in, order himself some dinner then have a few pints whilst he waited for Celia to finish work. They would have a few more pints together then go back to Celia's apartment to watch TV for a little while before they went to bed or sometimes if they were in the mood, Celia and Aiden would have sex. It puzzled Celia as to how all of this exactly happened. Aiden had wormed his way back in to her life, much like he did when he came back from his sabbaticals back in the days before Celia went to prison. Except this time the last sabbatical had gone on for a lot longer. Celia had loved Aiden a lot, but when she really thought about it; did he honestly love her as much as she did he?
Celia's overthinking was beginning to give her a headache. Overthinking everything had become quite the thing for Celia recently, ever since the whole Shaun fiasco had started and now she was prone to headaches as it had been keeping her away at night and was making her worry unnecessarily. The good thing however was the fact that Shaun had stopped calling and texting Corrina with his strange, wailing and begging messages so the threat from him had subsided. For now at least, as it was always knocking about in Celia's head that he was in fact still a threat to her baby sister.
'Um, are you planning on working all night Celia 'cause you were supposed to finish twenty minutes ago.'
'Wha?' Celia mumbled as she turned around to find her boss Charlie with a slightly concerned look on his face. 'Oh sorry boss, I was miles away.'
'Don't worry about it, c'mon go get your stuff.' Charlie said to her as he pointed to the door leading to the staff room out back. Celia nodded at him and made her way over before she heard the sound of glass breaking.
'AHH! DON'T TOUCH ME!'
It was Mel. She had two guys sat at a booth in her section who were obviously on their way to being well oiled. Mel had just taken them over a pitcher of beer and some clean glasses on a tray. The pitcher was safe on their table but the two pint glasses had smashed on the floor. One of the guys who was quite clearly drunk had decided to grab hold of Mel and try shoving his hand up her vest top. Charlie had started to run over but Celia had got there well before he did. She grabbed the guys hand and pulled him away from groping Mel.
'CAN YOU NOT FUCKING READ DICKHEHAD?!' Celia screamed in the guys face as she kept hold of his arm and pointed at one of the many signs that adorned the walls of the bar. The sign read "We will not tolerate verbal, or physical abuse of staff members. Customers in violation will be prosecuted." in fairly big letters. Celia let go of the man's arm as soon as Mel had managed to get out of the way. Charlie was now stood with Celia and signalled over to Jason at the bar to call the police. The man was now in realisation of what he had just done and was begging them to let him go, but Charlie stood and watched him like a hawk whilst the police arrived. His friend however had gone incredibly quiet and dared not to look at anyone. Charlie stood guard over the two men whilst Celia led Mel out back. Mel had a few tears rolling down her cheeks as she gave Celia a hug.
'Thanks for… for.' Mel stammered at Celia as she tried to wipe the now free flowing tears away.
'Don't worry about it Mel. It's what I'm here for.'
'But, but you always look out for us all of the time. You shouldn't have to.'
'Really Mel. We're like family here. We all look out for each other. Right?'
'Yeah, you're right.'
'Okay then.' Celia said. 'Let's get you a drink and a sit down for a few minutes. The police are gonna want to talk to you when they show up.'
A while later, the police had just left the bar after questioning everyone involved along with most of the customers who had witnessed what had happened. What had got to Celia the most was the fact that Aiden had upped and disappeared at some point, probably when she took Mel out back. Of course, Aiden didn't want to be around when the police turned up so he made himself scarce. Celia shook it out of her head as she knew Aiden would find her again at some point, she was used to him disappearing with no notice. It was now just past midnight and Charlie had decided to close the bar. Everybody had stayed behind so they could all have a drink together. Celia finally got her after work pint of Guinness and was now helping Charlie make up drinks for the floor staff Jason, Mel, Shelly and Christie. Incidents like what had happened earlier and bar fights never really occurred at Charlie's but when they did, Charlie would always shut the bar early and let everyone have a drink together though they were minus the boys in the kitchen Anthony and Dennis who had left long before the incident had happened, as they were back in to prep for the lunch service. The staff chatted for a while as they drank their drinks; laughing at the Polarid photos that Jason had taken of the two men from earlier before the Police had turned up. The Polaroids were now mounted on "The Board of Shame" which was a notice board that was kept behind the bar with photos of all the people who had been permanently banned from the bar. Everybody felt exhausted after that evening and those doing the closing shift were glad that they got to go home early. Celia walked home with Jason and Mel whilst the others shared a taxi as they had further to go. Celia was soon outside her apartment and wished Jason and Mel a good night. All Celia wanted to do was have a cup of tea and go to bed. She'd hear from Aiden whenever he decided to contact her.
Celia hurried in to her apartment and locked her door behind her. Tiredness had suddenly overwhelmed her so she decided to go straight to bed. She brushed her teeth, scrubbed off her make-up and changed in to some comfy pyjamas before she shuffled her way in to her bedroom. She sighed as she opened the door. Aiden didn't really disappear or need to contact her at all as he was half-propped up in her bed, sound asleep with the covers pulled up to his waist baring most of his chest. Celia noticed that he must have been using his phone as he fell asleep as it was no longer in his hand. Celia tiptoed over and picked his phone up and laid it on the bedside table. She crept round to her side of the bed and gently slid under the covers, hoping not to disturb Aiden.
'Seems like he's moved in or something.' Celia thought. She couldn't remember being at that meeting where she had said she didn't mind it. Celia had to be honest with herself though, she didn't mind it at all.
'Better not be using my fucking toothbrush.' Celia mumbled to herself.
'Don't worry, I got one of my own.' Aiden mumbled back to her as he slid down in bed and rolled over, slinking an arm around Celia's waist.
All Celia could do was smirk.
'You're such a weirdo Aiden.'
