When Dreams Become Reality Ch. 29

Jane and Maura sit together on the couch in the ME's office, neither having said a word for a few minutes. The brunette finally broke the silence, taking Maura's hand and rubbing it soothingly. Just like she does for her whenever her scars ache.

"Maybe it was a false negative. Teddy can tell us that for sure, or we can test your blood right here in the lab."

"I suppose we can..." Maura whispers in a dejected tone. "I just... I feel as if we lost something, even though we never had it to begin with. I know that must not make sense."

"Yeah, it does. I feel the same way." Jane jumps in to assure. "Babe, we can't let this get us down. We still have plenty of chances and options."

"I know. We can try again in a few weeks." Maura says with a smile just as her phone rings. She answers "This is Doctor Rizzoli-Isles... Leave the body there and don't move it. I'll be there as soon as I can." After she hangs up, Maura turns to face Jane. "A body was just found in Brookline. Apparently the same M.O. as the serial killer."

"I'll go get the guys and meet you there." Jane gives her a quick peck on the lips and starts to leave the office, but stops at the door. "You ok?"

"I'm a little disappointed, but I'll be fine. What about you?"

Jane shrugs. "It sucks, but I'm not too sad. I know it's gonna happen soon, so that helps."

"I'll have Susie draw my blood before I leave, it will only take a minute. By the time we return, the results will be ready and we'll know for sure."

"Alright. If I'm not down here when you get them in, just call me."

"Of course."

Jane gives her one last loving smile

before heading out, then meets her brother and partners outside so they can go to the crime scene.

"Where'd Frost go?" Jane asks Korsak, while snapping on her gloves as she steps into the crime scene.

"With Frankie... They're losing their breakfast." He chuckles.

The younger detective shakes her head with a smile. "I thought Frost was getting better with that. And you say Frankie got sick too? This one must be really bad then."

The pair walk behind the deserted building littered with trash. A woman's body lie naked on top of the garbage, tossed there as if she were thrown away without a second thought. She too was bound and gagged, her throat cut.

"Jesus..." Jane mutters at the horrific display.

"I know."

"Do we have an ID or anything yet?"

"Was about to ask Frost that myself until, well..." Korsak trails off, not needing to finish that sentence.

As if on cue, the pale and sickened men join them.

"Name... Was Alexandra Grey..." Frost informs between heavy breaths, avoiding looking at the body again. "Her license was found among the trash near her body."

"Guess the killer didn't care if we know who she is it or not." His partner comments.

"Jane, what have I told you about making assumptions at crime scenes?" Maura jokingly asks, having just arrived and walking up behind the group.

"Of course... My apologies, doctor. Can we theorize the killer didn't care if we know the vic's identity or not?" Jane laughs, getting an eye roll when she added emphasis on the word theorize.

"You may, Detective." She smiles, the becomes serious to examine the body. "It appears to be the same type of knife used to kill the other victims. A very sharp and non serrated edge."

"Oh thank goodness you're here. How else would we have known it was something sharp?"

Maura grins, shaking her head and ignoring her silly wife. "The body appears to have been here for a while. Based on the rate of decomposition, I'd say she's been dead for a week."

"And no one discovered it until now... Who called it in?" Korsak asks Frost, who handled that part of the case earlier that morning.

"It was anonymous. Caller didn't say much other than the fact that he found a body in this alley."

"Could've been the killer... He probably wanted the body found sooner so he called it in."

"Sergeant Korsak, that sounds an awful lot like speculation." Maura remarks without looking away from the victim.

"We're homicide, we speculate a lot." He replies, knowing she was just kidding with him.

"There was another note, too..." Frankie announces after wiping the corners of his mouth clean with a napkin. "It doesn't seem like it's part of the riddle, though. I think he's ready to make a move on whoever this girl is he's after."

"Then we better move fast. Bag and tag everything... I don't care if it's trash, if there's even the slightest chance of evidence somewhere in all this..." Jane points to the massive amount of garbage swarming with flies. "Then it's all coming with us."

"Right." Frankie agrees, then proceeds to tell CSRU their instructions.

"It's going to be a long day." Korsak looks at everything that needs to be carefully sifted through.

"Yeah, want me to stop at Boston Joe's?" Jane asks.

"Already have a coffee in the car, you can pick me up a donut if you want."

"Sure thing." Jane replies, and squats down by where Maura was still working. "Want anything?"

"No, thank you. Can't have coffee, remember?"

"That's right... Sorry, completely slipped my mind." Jane forgot that cutting out coffee helps increasing your chances of being pregnant, and if Maura is already, then she can't be having it anyway.

"That's ok, maybe just get me one of those croissants I like."

"I'm definitely getting that chocolate one I got in Venice. If they don't have it, I'm going to have to book a quick flight." Jane jokes, receiving her favorite mega watt grin in return. "I'll see you soon, love you."

"Maura, I have those results you asked for."

The ME looks up from the body and greets her friend and assistant with a smile. She nervously eyes the folder in her hands, wondering what the results could be. She doesn't want to get her hopes up since the test taken earlier was negative. Since Jane wasn't there, Maura decides to wait for her to read the results. It wouldn't be that long anyway.

"Thank you, Susie."

"I'll leave them on the end of the slab for you..." She says, then asks "So another victim, huh?"

"Yes. This one is tricky. No evidence on this body yet, but I'm hoping the killer slipped up this time."

"I ran all the other victim's blood and they had the same results. Tested positive for high doses of chloroform, two of which were lethal."

"Yet he cut their throats anyway..." Maura comments as she turns the woman's neck to get a better look at the wound. "It's very precise. I think it's safe to say whoever did this had at least some medical knowledge or training."

"I can check some databases. Maybe get some hits from other cities."

"Good idea." Maura smiles, then her eyes glances at the folder a few feet away. After Susie left, her impatience gets the best of her and she calls Jane. She gets her voicemail and leaves a short message. "Sweetie, it's me. Call me back when you can. It's important."

She puts the phone in a metal dish and resumes the autopsy, occasionally glancing at the folder. Time goes by and she decides to finally look at the results.

A little while later, after finally having enough of waiting, Maura goes upstairs in search of her wife. She figured that perhaps Jane became distracted with work and couldn't go downstairs right away. Still, she would've answered her phone... Right? Especially since it's Maura.

"Where's Jane? I need to speak with her about some important lab results."

"She wasn't with you?" Frost's eyebrows furrow in confusion.

"I thought she was in the morgue or your office this whole time." Korsak adds, then sees Maura's face crinkle in concern. "Maybe her phone died?"

"She has a charger for the car, and it was fully charged before we left the house this morning." Maura explains as she places a hand over her stomach, suddenly feeling ill worrying about Jane.

"I can call her phone again for you. Maybe she'll answer now." Frankie picks up the phone on his desk and press the buttons as fast as his fingers would allow. Maura locks eyes with him, and her heart sinks knowing she didn't pick up.

"This isn't like her. What if something happened to her?"

"Maura, I'm sure Janie is fine. You know how tough she is. Frost, can you track her phone for us? I'll go check it out myself."

"On it." Frost nods, then starts typing on his computer for the millionth time that day. "Found it... I'll go with you."

"I'm coming, too." Maura announces.

"Maura, you can't. Just in case something did happen. Plus, we need you here to keep working on the autopsy."

Maura is still incredibly worried and insistent on going, but the guys won't budge. "Look, we need to go. Please just stay here." Frankie begs his sister in law.

"Fine..." She reluctantly agrees. "Bring her back safely, please. If she's fine and nothing happened, let her know she's in trouble for worrying me and better have a good explanation."

"Oh, I think she already knows that." He winks, then rushes out to meet Frost who was holding the elevator waiting for him.

"Please be safe, Jane." Maura whispers to herself while staring at her Detective's empty desk. She can't shake that horrible feeling that something is very, very wrong.

"Turn down here... It's that street right there." Frost points out from the backseat.

On the way, they each called Jane's phone several times but none got an answer. At this point, worry and fear started to set in.

"Why the hell would she be over here?" Frankie asks while turning the corner.

"Following up on a lead, maybe? I know she likes going alone places, but she would've told one of us."

"Something is wrong. I can feel it." Frankie mutters under his breath as he parks behind the dark blue sedan, and then immediately jumps out to see if she's in there.

Korsak goes to open the door and was surprised to find it unlocked. "Jane never leaves it unlocked."

He looks around for signs of a struggle, but didn't see anything. What alarmed him most was the sight of her phone lying on the front seat.

"Where is she?" The youngest detective panics. They all know Jane never goes anywhere without taking her phone, especially during a case like this.

"Frost, give me a pair of gloves." Korsak asks, and is given the small items in a flash. He opens the glove box and finds something even more startling.

Jane's gun and badge.

"Step back." Korsak warns the others, and he goes to the trunk. He swallows down a hard lump, praying Jane isn't in there. He carefully opens it with one hand, his gun in the other. She's not inside, but he doesn't feel relief. He feels worse.

"Shit..." Frankie curses. "What do we do?"

"We find her."

The scared Rizzoli looks at him, not knowing what to do or where to go.

"I'll call CSRU and have them work on the car. Frost, you go back and do what you can on the computer. Frankie, go out and look for her."

"C'mon man, we gotta go." Frost urges his close friend back to their car. "She's going to be fine."

He didn't know that for sure, but he wouldn't let that thought stop him from trying to find his beloved partner and best friend.

When Frost gets back at BPD, Maura is waiting at Jane's desk.

"Where is she? Is she ok? Why isn't she here with you? Something happened..."

"Maura... Maura!" Frost repeats loudly to cut off her anxious rambling. "We found her car..."

"And?"

"Her keys, phone, gun and badge were all inside it."

"But not Jane." It wasn't a question, but Frost shook his head no anyway. Maura frantically grabs her purse that had her keys in it. "I need to go look for her."

"Frankie is already doing that. Please, stay here. Jane wouldn't want you out there potentially risking your life. This could be connected to the case, so I'm not letting you go. I'll make some calls to victim's families again, ok?"

Maura manages to ask "What would they know?"

"I don't know, but we don't have anything else." The honey blonde tears up more, and Frost realizes it's because of his words. "Maura, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean it like there's no hope. We will find her, I promise."

She ignores the tissues he tries give her and through a hoarse voice asks "What can I do?"

"Go be with Angela." He suggests. "She'll need you and you'll need her. I'll take you down to the café."

"No, you stay here. I need you to be at this every second possible. I'll go down myself."

"You sure?"

"Yes." She takes the file containing her pregnancy results off of Jane's desk and heads for the elevator. When she gets to the café, Angela and Stanley are in a heated argument.

"You don't work here anymore, Stanley." Angela tries to calmly explain.

"I don't care!" The older man shouts. "Look at this mess I come back to!" He gestures wildly to the spotless counter, and Angela looks at him like he has two heads.

"What are you talking about? It's fine!"

Stanley points to the desserts. "That! You can't have those cookies right next to the donuts like that. It makes them taste funny."

Angela tries to suppress a giggle but fails miserably. "Stanley, none of my customers have complained about anything since you left last week. In fact, I've received compliments. Not that it's any of your concern anymore." She leaves out how people were glad he's not working there anymore. It's then she sees her daughter coming into the café. "Maura, tell Stanley how well things have been going."

Maura is visibly shaken with tears in her eyes. The ridiculous argument with Stanley is quickly forgotten as Angela dashes to Maura's side.

"Honey, what's wrong?"

"Jane..." She cries. "She's missing."

Korsak arrives to find Frost running a search on the computer. He doesn't look away from the screen when the older detective walks in.

"CSRU find anything?"

"No... Nothing. Not even Jane's prints. Every inch of that car has been wiped clean."

"Damn, this guy is going to extreme lengths to cover his tracks."

"So what do you got?"

"The only possible link between the victims." Frost tells him.

"What is it?" He's shocked, pleased, and most of all, hopeful.

Frost turns his computer to show him. "I may have found his stomping ground. Where he looks for victims... A Bar 'n Grill on Sloan Street. When I asked each family member to list various places the victims visited during the last week they were alive, they all said the same place. One person frequents there, but the rest don't go there much and probably just happened to be there the day the killer was, I guess."

"We got the bastard now. It's only a matter of time." Korsak smugly declares with a clenched fist. "But how do we connect this to Jane? She has to be the one in the poem, the one he's after. But why?"

"I don't know. Our only bet is to check the Bar 'n Grill... Where's Frankie?"

"Out looking still... I'll tell him to meet us on Sloan Street."

"You go ahead. I'm gonna check on Maura and Mrs. Rizzoli... They're probably very upset and need some reassurance." Frost says. "I'll be there as soon as I can."

Korsak waves at him while rushing out of the squadroom, not bothering with the elevator and taking the stairs. His hastened pace doesn't slow one bit until he reaches his car in the garage.

"Maura... Would you like something to drink? Maybe some coffee or tea to calm your nerves?" Angela tentatively asks in a whisper, observing how Maura was clutching the folder in her hands so tightly.

"No, thank you. I can't drink anything right now." Her automatic response is quiet, it's obvious her mind is elsewhere.

"Did she say anything before she left?"

"Just that she was getting coffee and offered to get us some. We tried calling her but she won't answer. I don't know where she could be- Oh, Barry! Have you found Jane?" Maura asks the second she spots the Detective.

"There's a location where we think the killer stalked the victims. Frankie and Korsak are on their way now, but I wanted to update you guys myself."

"But you haven't found Janie?" Angela repeats Maura's question, noticing how he avoided answering it.

"I'm sorry, Mrs. Rizzoli... Not yet."

"Maura!" Susie shouts from across the room, suddenly appearing. "I found something that will help!"

"What?" Maura hops off the stool and meets her halfway.

"We found a fresh piece of chewed gum that was near the body. DNA matched it to a convicted felon by the name of Logan Connors."

"Thanks, Susie. That's a big help..." Frost says appreciatively, then tells Angela and Maura "Stay put. I promise I'll bring Jane back."

"Oh god..." Maura sobs violently as she watches Frost race out of the café. "Angela, please tell me this is just a dream. This can't be real."

Angela holds her as she also cries. "I wish it was. Let's hope whatever trouble Jane is in, she can get out of it. If she can't then you know we can rely on Frankie, Vince, and Barry to save her."

Jane is blindfolded but awake. She can still feel in her veins whatever knocked her out, the effects of it making her muscles feel swollen yet numb. She can't move... Something is holding her down. Without her sight, Jane relies on her other senses to keep her aware. She smells water and mold.

'A basement maybe?' She thinks. 'It's cold like one.'

Moments later, she hears the faintest sound of footsteps approaching.

"Who are you? What do you want?" Jane growls viciously, trying to not let on how scared she is.

She feels him lean over her shoulder, his foul breath almost too much to bear. His deep voice whispers in her. "I explained that in my poem."

"Yeah, about that..." Jane laughs humorlessly through gritted teeth. "You need to work on your writing, because you suck."

"I don't think you're in a position to be smart talking me..." He tsks while he delicately trails a hand across her cheek. "Not very wise of Boston's Finest." His nose touches her shoulder, causing her to flinch slightly. "He was right... The smell of lavender and fear is incredible. I can hardly contain myself."

Jane can feel the blood drain from her face. She thought that dark part of her life was over when she slammed the scalpel in that monster's chest.

"Hoy-Hoyt..." She stutters. "Hoyt told you to do this."

The apprentice laughs evilly. "While we in prison together he talked about you. How much of a challenge you are. Then he broke out to kidnap you, and attacked you again while in the prison hospital. I must say I'm impressed. You took him down twice while restrained... But how, may I ask, can you get out of this?"

Though completely and utterly terrified her nightmare has become real again, her response is confident. "I don't need to. My partners will find me and kill you. Or maybe I will."

"I guess we'll find out."

So that hand thing, is Maura pregnant or was she just sick being worried about Jane? Maybe both... I don't know. ;)

Made up street name and bar, not to be confused with an actual street or place.

Oh shit... Hoyt trained another apprentice before he died?! Do you think Jane will survive this one?

More questions now, and they will be answered in the next chapter. I'll update soon! :D
