CHAPTER 29 – Lazy Fist

"Round one…FIGHT!" the referee announced.

Naruto held his ground, watching Shikamaru keenly. He's just stooping there…not doing anything…could he be waiting for me to attack him? I can't be rash…he might look like a lazy bum, but the others did say he knocked out Aoi with one punch…and he did a real number on Tenten earlier, too, and I saw the results of that for myself… His fists tightened. There's no telling what he might come at me with, or what he'll respond with if I attack first…

A tiny drop of sweat coursed down the side of his head as he gritted his teeth. Time's going…I'm not going to get a victory by just standing here! Better make the first move…but I still gotta be cautious!

"Here I come!" he shouted aloud as he charged at Shikamaru—and one foot away from the stooping boy, he braked to a stop and kicked forward with his right foot, only for Shikamaru's hands to move swiftly and slap Naruto's leg away…yet the rest of Shikamaru's body did not move out of that stooping stance otherwise. His eyes narrowing, Naruto kicked at Shikamaru again—and again Shikamaru slapped the kicking leg aside while keeping the rest of his body totally still. Then Naruto raised his leg up high, intending to bring it down in a kick to Shikamaru's head—but before the blond boy could even begin to let the kick fall, Shikamaru suddenly sprang into action, bounding up and forward and ramming his shoulder into Naruto's groin while wrapping one arm around Naruto's upraised leg and the other arm around his balancing leg. The next thing Naruto knew, he was being lifted up and rushed across the arena floor…and then he was tossed like a garbage bag…and then he was falling into the pool below.

Splash!

"Round over!" the referee shouted. "Winner by ring-out: Shikamaru!"

Only then did Shikamaru relax, even as he stood at the edge of the arena and looked down into the water. "Oi, you all right down there?" he called.

Moments later Naruto burst to the pool's surface, spitting water out of his mouth. "Wooo!" he yelled out. "Damn, the water's cold!"

"Better get out of there before you catch a cold," Shikamaru advised him.

Naruto swam to the edge of the pool and pulled himself out, whereupon he stripped himself of his jacket, shirt and shoes and tossed the clothing items aside, and then flashed the water out of his hair. "All right…so you got me there," he admitted.

"I hadn't forgotten Sasuke's explanation of the rules governing this particular arena," said Shikamaru. "It was just a matter of tossing you over the edge—but I had to maneuver you into a position where I'd be able to do it."

"Well, guess what—you won't get the drop on me like that a second time!" Naruto vowed, running up the ramp to reach the arena again. "This time I'm winning this round!"

Turning to face Naruto, Shikamaru crouched down in the same stance as before. "Even if I don't throw you into the pool again, you'd better know that you won't beat me just like that," he said coolly. "I can analyze every situation, gauge the possible strengths and weaknesses of any opponent in front of me, and counter anything you throw at me. I might be lazy, but that doesn't mean I can't apply my mind if I have to."

There's no reason to doubt that, Naruto thought to himself as he readied his stance again. If I rush him recklessly, he might toss me over the side again…that means I have to take a different tactic this time. So…

"Round two…FIGHT!" the referee announced.

Shikamaru's eyes were closed as he crouched in that same stance. "Come."

Naruto didn't run forward this time; he walked instead. Then he was directly in front of Shikamaru once again, two feet away from him…but this time he just stood there. Shikamaru made no response to this, but continued crouching in the same stance. Then Naruto crossed his arms over his chest and glanced up to the ceiling, as if in deep thought.

"Why aren't you attacking?" Shikamaru spoke up.

"I'm just wondering about your stance. What does it do for you?" Naruto asked.

"It helps me to think," Shikamaru said bluntly. "Anything else?"

"Hmm…nope, not really." Naruto shrugged. "Well, all right—let's get this done!" Then he pulled back his right arm and flung it at Shikamaru's head in a powerful punch.

Shikamaru reacted immediately, shifting to his left and bringing up his left hand to knock Naruto's fist off-balance. Then, in the same movement, he swerved his legs and spun 360 degrees, bringing up his right fist in an uppercut aimed at Naruto's chin. One blow…!

…only his eyes suddenly widened as Naruto's left palm intercepted his fist and closed around it, stopping his arm right where it was. Before Shikamaru could react, Naruto brought one knee up to his stomach and then thrust it forward, catching the other boy right in the chest and knocking him back. Shikamaru skidded backward on his heels, but managed to stop himself just in time. "Whew…" He rubbed the spot where Naruto had kicked him.

"You're a largely defense-oriented fighter," Naruto spoke up. "And you specialize in a one-hit-knockout strategy. You avoid getting hit as best as you can, and then you go for strikes that will most likely incapacitate or knock out the opponent."

"Hmm. So you were able to figure that out this quickly, huh?" Shikamaru cocked an eyebrow.

"It's the kind of strategy that someone who doesn't want to expend a whole lot of energy in a whole lot of time would use," Naruto answered. "And it fits you."

Shikamaru straightened up. "I guess this means you'll adjust your style to counter my defensive tactics as best as you can, right?"

"Probably," said Naruto.

"All right." Shikamaru thumbed his nose. "So you managed to avoid my knockout blow. But you still can't approach me carelessly. You do know that, right?"

In response, Naruto readied himself in a stance once more. "Well, I can at least let the time run out in this round now. Since I scored a hit on you just now, technically I win, unless you find a way to hit me back."

Shikamaru shook his head. "There isn't enough time left for me to do anything. I'll let you claim this round." And here he nodded at the referee.

"Hmm…time! Winner: Naruto!" the referee announced.

OoOoO

In his room, Sasuke watched as Naruto and Shikamaru stood apart from each other. "I'll say this much—Shikamaru, you've used tactics well in the first round…and Naruto, you've countered a tactic well in the second round," he said. "But now…this is the last round. Only one of you can win. Who will it be? Uzumaki Naruto, the Kyuushingai? Or Nara Shikamaru, the boy with greater intelligence than he lets on?"

OoOoO

"So…thus far they've each claimed a round with minimal effort expended on either side," said Shino, watching the bout on the TV.

"All it took for Shikamaru-san to win the first round was to throw Naruto-kun into the water below the arena, and in turn Naruto-kun only had to land one kick on Shikamaru-san to win the second round," said Sai. "What will be the deciding factor in this final round?"

"Shikamaru won't let himself get hit just like that…the only reason Naruto was able to kick him a while ago was because he caught Shika by surprise," said Choji. "It was pretty much the same thing when Shika and I fought in our qualifier match for this tournament…I was only able to grab him once, and that's because he misjudged what I was going to do in that one moment. After that, though, I wasn't able to even touch him again."

"Shikamaru almost had that victory last round…if Naruto hadn't caught his punch, he'd be out cold now," Kiba observed. "That's the only reason he was able to kick Shikamaru at all."

"At this juncture, this could be anybody's match," said Shino.

"True," Sai agreed. "If Naruto-kun runs in blindly, he'll risk getting tossed into the pool again, or getting K.O.'ed by Shikamaru with one strike. But if Naruto-kun gets in a good hit in the right place or places, and Shikamaru-san can't block or avoid it, then Naruto-kun will be the victor."

"Hey, big guy, who do you think will win?" Kiba asked Choji.

Choji frowned. "It's hard to say, right now…"

At that moment the door opened, and in walked Sakura. "Ah, Sakura! You're just in time, the final round in those guys' fight is going to start any moment now," said Kiba, pointing to the screen.

"Hmm? Ah, I see," said Sakura, glancing briefly at the screen. "Well, I can't stop for that now—Ino's awake, and Naruto's mom asked me to get a bowl to dish out the ramen for her."

"What? Ino-san's awake now?" Sai's eyes widened. "How is she?"

"Okay, for the most part," said Sakura, going behind the counter and locating a clean bowl. "I have to hurry back up there now. In case they don't announce the victor over the intercom, let me know how the match turns out, okay?" and then she was gone before any of the boys could respond.

"All right! Ino's awake now!" Choji cheered.

"Do any of you want to go see her now?" asked Sai.

"Hey, she's not going anywhere, and the fight won't last too long. We can always go afterward," said Kiba. "Besides, Sakura's already going back up there, and Naruto's mom is up there now, too. We don't wanna crowd Ino too much—she'll still be hurt. Just knowing she's awake is enough of an update for the time being."

"True enough," said Shino. "For now…let's watch the match."

OoOoO

Naruto flexed his shoulders a little, before shifting into his stance once again. "All right, Shikamaru…this is the last round. Are you ready for this?"

"Are you?" Shikamaru asked back, even as he stooped back into his odd stance and cupped his hands again.

The referee raised his hand. "Round three…FIGHT!"

Again Naruto refrained from rushing in, but stayed right where he was and assessed the situation. If I catch him off-guard…if I keep him from guessing how I'll attack…then…okay!

Now he dashed forward, stopping just in front of Shikamaru and raising his leg high, as he'd done before. Immediately Shikamaru reacted, lunging upward with his shoulder charged toward Naruto's groin—but to his utter surprise, Naruto promptly did a little hop and brought his other leg up, kicking Shikamaru under the chin and knocking him back before allowing the leg he'd raised earlier to drop back down to give him support. Stabling his footing, Naruto promptly dashed at Shikamaru, who was still stumbling from the chin-kick, and threw his first forward at the other boy's chin…but Shikamaru, as off-balance as he was, managed to shift his weight so that his left hand came around and knocked Naruto's fist aside while his right fist came around in a backhanded attack that caught the side of Naruto's head.

His line of perception jarred by the force of the counterattack, Naruto stumbled to one side, while Shikamaru—by now having gotten back his own footing—charged at him and jumped forward, kicking out with one foot at the blond boy's shoulder. Naruto blocked the kick, but Shikamaru twisted his body so as to deliver a backward kick with his other foot, catching Naruto cleanly in the chest and knocking him down to the ground.

Whoa! This guy…he's a hard hitter! Naruto's mind screamed out, seconds before Shikamaru's form appeared above him, one leg raised in an intended axe-kick. Naruto immediately rolled out of the way just as Shikamaru's heel struck the ground, and he jumped to his feet as Shikamaru spun to confront him once more. To his surprise, Shikamaru rushed at him, and he tensed—only for Shikamaru to shift his body and go into a sliding maneuver that carried him between Naruto's legs. Shikamaru quickly flipped himself so he was on his belly, then pulled his legs up under him so he was crouching on the tips of his toes, and then, as Naruto spun to face him, he shot his upper body forward, head-butting Naruto clear in the stomach.

But even as the force of Shikamaru's attack fairly lifted Naruto off the ground, the blond fighter quickly reached down and wrapped his left arm around Shikamaru's neck. "Nng…!" Shikamaru grunted as he felt his breathing suddenly constricted…and then grunted again as he felt Naruto's fist hammering once, twice, three times into his ribs. Then, his arm still wrapped around Shikamaru's neck, Naruto reached forward and grabbed the other boy's belt with his free hand—and then he recoiled as one of Shikamaru's legs arced up and over, kicking him clear in the head and knocking him back.

"Whew…damn…" Shikamaru stood up straight again, rubbing his neck where Naruto had just grabbed him and holding his ribs with his other hand. "I haven't moved this much in this tournament since I had to fight Choji in our qualifier match."

Naruto rubbed his head where he'd been kicked. "For someone who's as lazy as you, you're actually pretty flexible…and adaptable when it comes to fighting."

"Yeah…but we're almost out of time," Shikamaru noted, even as he held his hands up and shifted his feet as he went into a defensive stance. "How about we finish this now?"

"Yeah…let's." Naruto tightened his fists and readied himself.

OoOoO

In the waiting room, the four boys watched intently as Naruto and Shikamaru stood in their stances, neither one moving. "Come on…" Kiba breathed.

"Naruto-kun…" Sai muttered.

"What'll you do, Shika…?" Choji wondered under his breath.

Shino said nothing, but his eyes behind his dark sunglasses were focused on the TV screen.

OoOoO

Naruto charged forward first, yelling aloud as he drew his right arm back to punch at Shikamaru's head. Shikamaru immediately brought his hands into position to intercept the incoming punch—Naruto got closer—Shikamaru's eyes focused on him—Naruto's punch flew forward—Shikamaru's left arm came up in an instant and parried the blow—

—and suddenly pain shot through Shikamaru's midsection as, in that same instant, Naruto's left fist found its way into his stomach. "Urk…no…way…" Shikamaru managed to choke out.

Naruto immediately bounced back as Shikamaru, clutching his middle, dropped to his knees. "This round is mine," Naruto said simply.

"The match is over!" the referee shouted. "Winner: Naruto!"

OoOoO

"So…that's it," said Shino.

"Whoa…so Naruto…actually won against Shikamaru?" Choji asked with wonder in his tone.

Kiba crossed his arms over his chest. "Huh…who'd have figured? Naruto won the tournament after all."

Sai turned away from the TV. "All right…now that we've seen the outcome, the celebration will come later. For the time being…I want to go now and see Ino-san."

"Ah—yeah, definitely!" said Choji. "I'll go with you!"

"Yeah, me too," said Kiba, and with that he, Choji and Sai headed out of the room.

Shino did not follow the others at once, but kept a lingering look on the TV screen. So…Naruto-san…you have won this invitational tournament. Now…what will you wish for, that the Uchiha Zaibatsu will have to grant to you…?

OoOoO

Shikamaru stayed right where he was, sitting on his knees, his upper body bent forward as his arm cradled his stomach. "Ow…to think…that you would've thrown your left fist forward at the same time as your right fist," he said under his breath. "You really…caught me by surprise."

"Yeah…I guess I did," said Naruto, now walking back to Shikamaru. "Can you stand up?" he asked, holding out his hand.

Nodding, Shikamaru accepted Naruto's hand and let the other boy pull him to his feet. "So…in the end, I lost…"

"Barely," Naruto informed him. "It could've gone the other way, you know. I just happened to catch you by surprise, that's all."

The referee stepped forward. "Uzumaki Naruto, congratulations on your victory," he spoke up. "As the only remaining combatant in the Uchiha Zaibatsu Invitational Tournament, you are now in line to receive the prize as was stipulated to you in your initial invitation. Please return to the waiting area; Sasuke-sama will come to address you on that matter shortly."

"Okay," said Naruto. "Just…I kinda need a change of clothes, since mine got soaked from my dip in the pool…"

"We can facilitate that," the referee agreed. "As for you, Nara Shikamaru, well played."

"Yeah…" Shikamaru let the word hang in the air.

OoOoO

Sasuke watched the screen as the referee congratulated Naruto. "All right…so you're the final one, Naruto," he said softly. "Yes…now it's time for me to have my words with you." And with that, he stood up from his chair.

OoOoO

"Wow…" Ino set the spoon back into the bowl of ramen. "I never thought ramen could taste so good!"

"Take your time and have it, dear; it's not running away from you," Kushina chuckled.

Standing nearby, Sakura glanced out the door. "The final match should be finished by now, I think," she commented.

"Oi! Sakura!" Kiba's voice could be heard just then; looking down the corridor, Sakura indeed saw him, Sai and Choji coming toward her, with Shino following just a little distance behind them. "Naruto won the tournament! Naruto's won!" Kiba continued excitedly.

"And aside from that, is Ino-san still awake?" asked Sai.

"Boys, boys, settle down; she's eating now," Sakura admonished them, waving her hands.

But Ino shook her head. "Let them in—I could use the extra company," she said. "Hi, guys," she addressed the new arrivals. "What's that I hear—Naruto won?"

"That he did," Shino said calmly. "He just narrowly managed to defeat Shikamaru, and now he has qualified for the prize."

"Ah…I see." Ino looked down with a smile on her face. "So now Naruto will get one wish granted to him by the Uchiha Zaibatsu…"

"What do you think he'll wish for?" asked Choji. "Maybe he'll ask for an all-you-can-eat buffet!"

"Oh, be quiet, idiot; that's what YOU would wish for, I'm sure," Ino scolded him.

"And what would YOU have wished for?" Choji challenged her.

"Eh? Me? Well…er…" Ino looked sheepish all of a sudden.

"Never mind, never mind," Sai interjected. "Ino-san, how is the ramen? It's good, isn't it?"

"Yeah, it sure is!" Ino nodded, secretly grateful for the out Sai had just given her. "Kushina-san can definitely cook!"

"Oh, no, you don't! You're not getting off the hook like that, Ino-pig!" Sakura spoke up suddenly. "Hey, you want to know what she was going to wish for? That Sasuke-kun was going to be her boyfriend, that's what!"

"Ack!" Ino exclaimed, a bright blush shining even through her facial bandages.

Kiba rolled his eyes. "Sheesh, I don't get what you girls see in that guy anyway…"

"How about the fact that he's rich, that he's popular, and that he has a degree of physical attractiveness that draws most of the girls to him?" Shino suggested.

"…well, there's that," Kiba conceded grudgingly.

"But of course!" Sakura exclaimed, hearts in her eyes. "Any girl who doesn't want Sasuke-kun has got to be a retard!"

"Well, at least now we know what you would've wished for, if you were participating in this tournament," Kushina chuckled.

"Well…I would be, if Madame Porker here hadn't knocked me out of the competition in the very first leg," Sakura grumbled.

"In any event, Uzumaki-san, your son has won. What do you suppose he will wish for?" Shino asked Kushina directly.

"Hmm…I wonder…" Kushina mused. "Well, maybe he'll surprise us with his wish…"

OoOoO

"All right, here we are again!" Naruto announced, clad in a fresh change of clothes while carrying his original soaked clothes in his arms. "And they even said I could keep these new threads! Man, I gotta say for Sasuke, he's got some fine taste in clothes!"

"Those are probably just old clothes that he doesn't want anymore," Shikamaru grunted.

"So what? They're far better than what I've got in my closet!" said Naruto.

"Hmph." Shikamaru shook his head. "Well, Naruto, in any case, congrats. But…"

"But?" Naruto prompted, giving the other boy a curious glance.

Shikamaru frowned, remembering Sasuke's earlier warning to him. "Just be careful what you wish for when you give your wish to Sasuke, Naruto. He might twist it around on you for his own advantage. You never know."

"Hmm…all right, thanks for the tip," said Naruto, shrugging.

Just then the door opened again, and in walked Sasuke himself. "Ah, you're here already…good," he spoke up. "Oi, Shikamaru, you mind giving us a few minutes? I'd like to talk to Naruto one on one."

"Yeah, sure," said Shikamaru, though he lingered just long enough to shoot Sasuke a sharp glare. Sasuke merely responded to the look with a conniving smirk, watching as Shikamaru walked out and shut the door behind him.

Naruto had not missed the nonverbal exchange between the other two. "What was that all about?"

"Just a minor argument we had earlier, that's all. He's a bit more of a sore loser than he'll let on to anyone else," said Sasuke, waving away the matter dismissively. "Now, to the matter at hand…as the organizer of the Uchiha Zaibatsu Invitational Tournament, let me personally thank you for your participation, and congratulate you on having made it up to this point."

"Right," Naruto nodded. "So now that I've won the tournament, you have to grant me one wish, like your invitation said."

But Sasuke held up his hand. "Don't jump the gun like that," he said smoothly. "You may have qualified for the grand prize, but you're not ready to receive it just yet."

"Eh?" Naruto frowned, confused. "What do you mean by that?"

Now Sasuke smirked fully. "You've defeated all of your challengers and come out on top, that is true…however…" He put his hands in his pockets. "You still have a little further to go before you can claim the prize in totality."

"Oi, wait a minute—you mean there's still something more I have to do before you'll announce me as the tournament winner?" Naruto queried.

"Yes." Sasuke nodded. "To win it all…you have to defeat me."

"…defeat you…" Naruto blinked as the statement sank in. "Then the host of this tournament is acting as the final challenger?" He frowned. "Why are you only just now saying this?"

"Don't get all antsy on me; I'm not going to fight you now, after all," said Sasuke. "It would be totally unfair of me to throw you into an arena yet again after you've had to fight three battles back-to-back. And in any case, I think it's only fair—you may have gotten this far, but what better way is there to see whether you truly deserve to have a wish granted to you by the Uchiha Zaibatsu, than for you to prove your mettle by defeating the Uchiha who invited you here in the first place?"

Naruto's eyes narrowed. "Are you sure you're not doing this because of my past?"

"Not at all, not at all," Sasuke assured him. "If any of the others had gotten to this point instead of you, I would be telling them the same thing I've just told you. And whether they liked it or not, they would have to adhere to that stipulation before getting the prize…defeat me, or go home empty-handed." He chuckled. "Although I must admit, the fact that you're a Kyuushingai only sweetens the pot for me. It's been a while since I've had an opportunity to fight such a…promising opponent."

"Hmm." Naruto crossed his arms over his chest and frowned more deeply. "You make it sound like you couldn't find anyone else to fight before I came along. But I'd think this tournament would've proved you wrong."

"True, everyone else who's fought in the Uchiha Zaibatsu Invitational Tournament has shown decent potential since the first match started in the qualifier round," said Sasuke. "But just by observation alone, I can tell you that some of them would never be able to make the cut, if they had to face me in a match. Sakura's shallow-minded and Ino's too flashy, not to mention they are both too focused on getting me as their personal trophy…Kiba's all show and no go, as you would've experienced from your little spat with him the other day…Choji is strong, but he's so fat that he provides too many openings for seasoned fighters to take advantage of…Suigetsu's swift on his feet, but otherwise he's an utter idiot…and Aoi can't back up his big talk with action, as handily proven when you defeated him and his gang of thugs a while back, and proven again by Shikamaru tonight."

"And the others?" Naruto prompted. "I just fought Shikamaru, and he's good at strategy and dealing blows that'll knock opponents out in one blow. Jugo's strong, too, as is Tenten…Sai's a tough fighter also…and I haven't seen Shino fight for myself, but you wouldn't have invited him to this if he couldn't handle himself."

"Your assessment of those five is correct," Sasuke allowed. "However, Shikamaru and Sai won't fight unless you give them a reason to do so, and I find that to be boring. Shino isn't the kind of person who'll draw attention to himself, but will rather stay in the background…again, I find that to be boring. Tenten is strong, but too impulsive and driven by emotion. And Jugo…well, he might have been a candidate for me to challenge, but you defeated him tonight, so now I'm no longer interested in him."

"And now your sights are on me. Whoop-dee-do, I'm so lucky," Naruto grunted.

Sasuke leaned forward slightly. "I will tell you this, though, Naruto, just between me and you…ever since I found out about your connection to the Nine Terrors, I've been wondering what it would be like to have a match with you. After all…I've been training for the past two years, in fact ever since before the 365 days came to an end, so that I could be strong enough to fight on par with the Terrors in case any of them ever came to Konoha Town after that devastating time was over. And now…now, one is in my very own neighborhood."

"Training to fight on the same level as the Kyuushingai?" Naruto scowled. "You sound like Tenten."

"Ah, but she and I have different reasons for that kind of training. She wants revenge…I, on the other hand, am not fettered by such a petty thing," said Sasuke. "But enough of this now. You go home, Naruto, and get your rest tonight and tomorrow…but come back here tomorrow afternoon at 5:00. I will be waiting here for you…at that time, we'll see whether you're truly worthy of the grand prize of my tournament…and whether my training truly will pay off. And somehow, I have a feeling you'll be in for a lot more than you've gotten from everyone else in this tournament…and THEN you can finally stop pulling your punches and fight seriously for real."

He straightened up and turned away from Naruto. "That'll be all. Tomorrow at 5:00 p.m., Uzumaki Naruto."

The door to the waiting room shut behind the dark-haired boy as he made his exit. Naruto stared at the closed door. Sasuke…

END CHAPTER 29

00000

NEON MAJESTIC: Okay, the question has been asked: why would Sasuke effectively threaten to destroy three businesses on a whim, just to force someone to stay in his tournament? Why would it be important to him, for Shikamaru to have fought Naruto? And why bother holding the tournament at all? Well, in order: (1) Sasuke's a douche like that; (2) the real-life reason is so that I could show a Naruto vs. Shikamaru fight, while the in-universe reason is that Sasuke would likely be one of those people who wants to see his tournament run smoothly, and a person quitting in the middle of it isn't conducive to that; and (3), there actually IS a reason for this tournament being held, but it'll only come up in another chapter or two from now.

And it seems the issue of Naruto's level of power as a Kyuushingai, holding back or not, is still a nagging matter. So, what I'll do is, I'll soon post a chapter that outlines just how terrifying he could really be if he decided to really cut loose…but what will trigger that? You'll just have to wait and see.

And to those who wonder what Hinata's doing up to this point in the story, have no fear—the next arc, whether major or minor, will feature her quite prominently.

As for Naruto having his level of skill at such a young age…remember his explanation of the machine that gave the Kyuushingai their knowledge and intelligence artificially? That machine, in my imagination, is basically a hybrid of the Matrix-jack from The Matrix and the information-processor from The 6th Day. Oh, the wonders of fictional technology.

Now…the final fight of the Uchiha Zaibatsu Invitational Tournament is up next—Naruto vs. Sasuke! Chapter 30's coming soon!
