Coming Clean pt. 1

Spencer's POV

My friends and I waited at the police station for one of the officers to come out and talk to us. I sat there with shaky hands. All of my friends tried to comfort me, but I'm so nervous. What if the cops don't believe me? What if this whole thing is really nothing and I'm just over looking things like I always do? What if this does work out and the cops arrest Ian? Melissa will hate me if Ian gets arrested. If Melissa hates me then my parents will hate me too.

"Spencer, just take it easy," Aria said. "This will all work out for the best."

I sure hope she's right. How can I calm down though? There's a lot going on in my life. I'm about to tell the cops everything that I've been through. Ian might get arrested. Melissa will most likely hate me for it. Like I said before, if Melissa hates me, so will my parents. Then we got Toby in the hospital, because he was being an idiot and driving while he was drunk. He could've been killed. And there's a chance that he will die in surgery. There's just too much going on right now.

An officer wearing a suit and tie walked over to greet us.

"Spencer Hastings."

My friends and I stood up to shake hands with the officer. He held up his badge and introduced himself as detective Holbrook. We went back to his office to talk about what I have to report.

"Girls please have a seat."

He gestured to the chairs in front of his desk. We took out seats and immediately got settled in. Now that I'm here I have to do this. There's no turning back now. Holbrook folded his hands on top of his desk.

"The lady out front tells me you guys have something to report."

"Um Spencer has something," Hanna said.

"Which one of you is Spencer?"

I raised my hand, "I'm Spencer."

"Tell me Spencer, what is this all about? You don't have to worry about anything you're safe in a safe place."

I looked at each of the girls for support. The each nodded their heads gesturing for to tell him everything. Right then I knew that they would be there for me not matter what happens. I took a deep breath before speaking.

"A few months ago I was taking a run through the woods and I was attacked by somebody. It happened again a few weeks later in my own home. At first I didn't know who was after me, but now I have proof that it was Ian Thomas."

"How do you know it was him?"

"My attacker wore a black hoodie and this creepy looking mask. I found the same clothes in Ian's suitcase later on. The night I found his stuff, Ian tried to kill me."

"When did he try to kill you?"

"He tried to kill me last week."

"Why didn't you report this sooner?"

"I was afraid no one would believe me. Ian has come close to doing horrible things to me in the past. I told my parents about it, but they didn't believe me when I told them he tried to rape me a couple years back. I thought that if I told someone about this then I'd get the same reaction."

Holbrook adjusted himself in his chair and leaned forward.

"If Ian Thomas is the one who tried to kill you many times, how are you still alive?"

"The other two times a friend of mine would be around to save me. The third time I almost didn't get away, but I did and I ran to my friend's house."

"Who was the friend that helped you?"

"His name is Toby Cavanaugh."

"This Toby Cavanaugh is he a reliable witness to what has happened to you."

I nodded and said, "Yes."

Holbrook took a minute to write down everything I said. While he was doing that I glanced over at my friends. They looked at me with concern and I assured them I was fine. Holbrook set down his pen and tucked his hands underneath his chin.

"This doesn't sound like something anyone would make up."

"So you believe me?"
"I think so, but if I'm going to arrest the guy I'll need to speak with Mr. Cavanaugh to hear what he has to say about this. I know it's nice to have your friends here for support, but it would've been better if you came here with the witness himself.'

"Sir," Emily spoke up. "Toby couldn't be here right now. He was in an accident and he's in surgery right now."

"Then I suggest that Spencer comes back with Toby when they both can be here."

"You just said you believe her," Hanna said. "Why can't you just arrest that bastard and lock him up?"

Holbrook ignored Hanna's question and stood up to open the door for us.

"Thank you for coming ladies, we'll see you soon."

The girls and I stood up then walked out of his office. He shut the door behind us and we just stood there. First my parents didn't do anything and now the police won't do anything. This is just what I feared. No one will help me. The only way the cops will listen is if Toby can be here. Toby better pull through this. I don't want him to live just so he can save my ass again. I want him to live, because I need him to live.

When we got back to the hospital, Caleb told us that Toby is still in surgery. I sat in the waiting from along with my friends. The whole time my body was shaking and I kept biting my fingernails.

"Thank you for coming guys," I said. "But it looks like it's over."

"Spencer it's not over," Aria said.

"All you have to do is go back with Toby as soon as he gets better," Emily said.

"And what if he doesn't get better!" I snapped.

"Spence," Hanna said, while putting a comforting hand on my knee. "Toby is going be okay."

"We don't know that. He could die on that table."

"Don't think like that," Aria said.

At this point I could not hold my tears in any longer. I didn't care who saw me cry. I'm tired of going on like I'm strong. I can't hold myself together anymore.

"I need him to be okay," I cried out. "Not just for me. I need him to be okay for the sake of himself. He's too young to die. He doesn't deserve this. This is my fault. I shouldn't have ignored him or listened to my parents. If I continued to talk to Toby then we never would have gotten into that stupid fight and a war wouldn't have broken out between the two of us. We would still be friends right now maybe even closer if it weren't for me and my stupid stubborn attitude. This whole thing is my fault. Toby needs to live. He wants to be a carpenter like his mom. Toby can't die on me, because I need him here."

Now I'm really crying. No I'm not just crying, I'm sobbing uncontrollable. None of my friends seemed to notice where this sudden burst of emotions was coming from. I don't think Caleb even expected me to react this way.

"Spencer," Aria said. "You need to calm down. Toby is going to be okay and you have to believe that."

I nodded and whipped my nose with my sleeve. Everyone else seemed really concerned about me right now. I feel kind of guilty having them worry about me when they should be worried about Toby. I'm not the one lying on the table.

Thirty minutes have passed by since we got back. I'm currently leaning my head on Emily's shoulder. Aria and Ezra went to go find coffee for everyone. I don't think I can eat or drink anything right now.

"Here Spencer," Aria said. "I made your coffee just the way you like it. Strong and dark like the night sky."

"Thanks," I mumbled.

"How much longer do we have to wait?" Hanna asked.

"Surgery takes time," Caleb said.

"It's been four hours," I said. "Usually by this time the surgeons are rushing to save the person's life just before their heart monitor goes flat. Next thing you know they call time of death."

"Okay Spencer you need to push all those negative thoughts out of your head right now," Aria said.

"Yeah and stop watching so many medical shows," Hanna said.

Aria and Hanna put a comforting hand on my back. Caleb, Ezra, and Maya sat there keeping a close eye on me. Another ten minutes passed by. I don't know how much longer I can just sit here and wait. Right when I was about to lose hope, a man in white lab coat came out. The man walked over to the lady at the front counter then she pointed at us. He walked over to us and rubbed his hands together. The man wore a flat smile on his face.

"Are you all here for Cavanaugh?"

"Yes," Caleb answered.

Aria and Emily held both of my hands. We all stared up at the doctor waiting for him to tell us the bad news about Toby. He didn't even have to say anything. I can see it all over his face.

"What's going on with Toby?" Ezra asked.

The doctor cleared his throat. "I'm not going to lie that surgery was a lot tougher than it should've been, but your friend put up a hard fight. Every time we thought we were about to lose him he just kept on fighting. It was like dying wasn't an option for him. We were able to successfully remove the shards of glass from his heart and he is now in the recovery room. He's unconscious right now, but we all think he should make a full recovery."

My friends and I sighed in relief. Toby's okay he's alive. I can finally breathe again. My heart is still racing. I wanted to hug everyone that worked to save his life, but I held myself down.

"Can we see him?" Emily asked.

"Yes, you can all go in for right now, but visiting hours are almost over. I will ask that only one person stays with him at a time."

We all nodded then fallowed him to Toby's room. When we walked in, Toby was lying there on his bed. His eyes are closed and he lied there with his chest slowly rising and falling with every breath he took. Everyone circled around his bed hoping he would sense their company. As for me, I couldn't move. I just stood behind everyone looking over their shoulders. It was like my feet were suddenly glued to the floor.

"One of us should be here when he wakes up," Hanna said.

"I can't," Emily said. "I have to be at work at 9pm."

"And I drove her here, so I have to give her a ride," Maya said.

"I'll stay with him and call you guys when he wakes up," Caleb said.

"I'll stay too," Hanna said.

"What about you Aria?" Caleb asked.

"I can't stay. My mom texted me to come home and get some sleep," Aria said.

Caleb nodded at everyone then sat down in the chair next to Toby's bed. Everyone else said goodbye then walked out of the room. Hann told Caleb she would be in the waiting room. Caleb kissed her goodbye then watched Hanna walk out the door. Everyone else left the room, but my feet were still glued to the floor.

"Spencer," Caleb said. "You should go home and get some rest."

"Actually I'd like to stay it that's okay."

Caleb nodded, "sure."

Toby's POV

My head is hurting. It feels like I got slammed in the head by a truck. Actually I kind of did get hit in the head by a truck. Part of my body feels numb and I could slowly feel myself starting to wake up. My eyelids fluttered a few times before I opened my eyes completely. My vision is kind of blurry right now. I can see a white ceiling and some blinding lights shining down on me. I blinked my eyes then opened them again. This time my vision came out more clearly. I could see the sunlight shining through the window. I could hear the sound of the monitor next to my bed beeping every second. I tried to lift my head up, but I could barely move it. The only thing I could do was turn my head left to right and wiggle my fingers.

"Toby," I heard a deep voice say.

I turned my head and saw Caleb sitting there. I'm guessing everyone else went home already. I probably would have gone home too. I turned my head more, so I could talk to Caleb.

"How long was I out?"

"After the surgery you were out for about four hours."

"Did everyone go home?"

"Mostly everyone. Hanna's in the waiting room and someone else decided that they wanted to stay."

"Who?" I asked.

Caleb bobbed his head to my right side. I turned my head in that direction. My heart nearly flew out of my chest when I saw who was there. Spencer was sitting in the chair on the right side of my bed with her head lying on my bed. I turned back to Caleb and pushed myself to sit up.

"She stayed here all night?"

He nodded. "I tried telling her to go home twice so she could get some sleep, but she wouldn't move."

I rolled my eyes and said, "I told you she was stubborn."

"She's stubborn, because she cares."

I nodded. "Yeah I know that. I guess we should wake her up."

Caleb rose to his feet. "You do that. I'll go tell Hanna that you're awake. That will give you two the chance to talk."

"Thank you."

He smiled and said, "I'll get you two an extra few minutes to kiss and make up."

I rolled my eyes. "Goodbye Caleb."

Caleb walked out of the room and I looked at Spencer. Her arms were folded on the side of my bed and her head was resting on them. I watched as her eyelids fluttered. She always looks adorable when she sleeps.

"Spencer."

She lifted her head up and whipped the sleepiness out of her eyes. She blinked her eyes a few times before looking at me. When she saw that I was awake, she shot up in her seat and leaned forward.

"Oh my god, you're okay."

I chuckled and said, "Yeah I'm alright. I wouldn't worry too much about me though I mean you look worse than I do."

She titled her head, "really you just woke up and you're already cracking on me?'

"Well you look fine, but you don't look well."

"That's because I've been up since 9am yesterday and I just fell asleep twenty minutes ago."

"You could've gone home to get some rest," I said.

"No, I wanted to be here when you woke up."

"Why?'

She shrugged," I just wanted to."

"I'm glad you're here," I admitted.

"Caleb told me that you left the wedding to drive to my house, why?"

I shook my head, "I don't know I was drunk."

"Drunk actions are sober thoughts."

"Most of the time."

"The reason why is not important."

Spencer moved from the chair she was sitting in and sat on the edge of my bed. She laid her hand on my arm and begged me with her eyes to tell her. Can't say no to that and I can't lie to her anymore. I know why I was going to her house. I remember perfectly what I was saying while I was drunk. This is a very scary thing for me to admit. After trying to deny it for a long time I can't do it anymore. I'm in love with Spencer.

There now we know Toby's true feelings for Spencer, but will he man up and tell her? Next chapter you will find out exactly when Toby realized that he was in love with her. Thanks for all the reviews last chapter you guys are awesome keep it up!
