Cat tales

29

Kaoru was standing on the balcony of Kenshin's apartment. Her thoughts rambled from east to west as she deciphered everything that had happened.

The Espers were dead. Only Enishi remained.

She never liked nor disliked Enishi in the past. He was an Esper, like her but he was born stronger. She never blamed him, it was nature. Still, she was never weak either. She was balanced. What she lacked in magic, she had in physical strength.

It was hard to understand what happened through the years with her species, but unlike Enishi…she had seen how it happened. It was slow but when she finally realized their number was dwindling it was too late—for them, and for her. She had also allied with humans in the longer run.

"It would be foolish to fight against this," she whispered nostalgically. Their time had passed and no longer were the fields free and healthy, now they were populated by tall cities and an overpopulation of humans. There was no place for them anymore. "If people find out about us…"

Kaoru shook her head to will the bloody images that invaded it. No. They were fairy tales and they should remain like that. But…would Enishi cooperate? What did Enishi want?

And…Tomoe? Why that woman was named such…why did she feel so…peaceful to be around? It was as if she had some kind of magic, a special type or…

"She's a descendant," gasped Kaoru and she tensed, her back straightening under the sudden flow of information, "That's how humans got magic."

Once again her thoughts circled around her like a hawk, dangerous, stalking and intimidating. They mingled with humans…rutted with them…or the few who could take on human form. It made sense now…mages, witches, elementals and warlocks were descendants from different types of Espers.

It was…disconcerting.

"People can't find out about us," she whispered again but this time there was a panicked urgency in her voice.

"Find out about what?" Kenshin suddenly asked from behind her.

Kaoru whirled until she met with passive violet eyes and a kind smile. She willed her tumbled self into control, "No one can know we exist," she explained vaguely, "Or that we are made of…magic."

Kenshin nodded his head and moved next to her and reclined against the rail. "What does Enishi want?" he asked curiously, "He wants to start an Esper family?"

To be continued…
