Billie laughed with her coworkers as they ate in the small room that served as Gringotts' lunchroom. While not on assignment, Billie was stationed in the massive white building working on dark artefacts and writing paperwork. It was dreadfully boring work and it nice to have this time to commune with her colleagues and get away from it.
David, one of her partners who usually worked with her on assignment, came up to the small gathering and took a seat on her left. "Guys, we have fresh meat joining us today," he said as he pulled his lunch out of a brown paper bag.
"Really?" Billie asked. A new guy would definitely make the place more interesting.
"Yes, all the way from France," he continued, putting on an accent as he said the country and causing everyone to laugh.
The door to the lunchroom opened as a tall blonde man entered and the table fell silent. His hair was short, stopping right above his ears though a long piece fell across one eye. He walked straight-backed into the room and took a seat at the free table next to hers.
"We should invite him to sit with us," Billie said.
"Why? I know his type: pretty, foreign, snobbish," Paula said as she wrinkled her nose.
"You don't know that," Bille said, casting a glance over at the man as he pulled out a sandwich from his own paper bag.
When no one else at the table spoke up in the new guy's defence, Billie frowned. She grabbed her own lunch and stood up. "I'm going to talk to him," she said.
She made the small trot over to the next table and took a seat across from the blond. "Hi, I'm Billie," she said, extending her hand to him.
The blond looked at her, blinking a bit as he chewed his lunch and Billie wondered if maybe he didn't speak English. "I'm," she repeated pointed to herself. "Bill-ie."
"Billie," the man repeated after he swallowed, "Isn't that a boy's name?"
Billie chuckled. "Actually no, it's Billie with an 'ie', so it's the female spelling, though my parents really wanted a boy." she said prompting a small chuckle from the blond man across from her. "And you are?" she asked.
The blond reached into his paper bag and pulled out a napkin, taking the time to wipe his mouth and his hands before extending it as Billie had a few moments ago. "My name is Luc," he said.
"What brings you to Gringotts', Luc?" Bille asked after she shook it. "This isn't the most glamorous job out there."
"I took a summer job in England to improve my English," he said. "I am well with numbers and zis was available."
Billie nodded, smiling a bit at his little blunder, and they lapsed into a comfortable silence, every now and then making small talk about anything.
Soon, David came nearby and said, "Billie, come we have to get back to working on Vault 14."
Billie rose to her feet and asked, "Will I see you around, Luc?"
The blond smiled at her, one that made her feel a bit funny inside as he said, "But of course, Billie. Au revoir."
