Chapter twenty-nine: He's gone

Adam's P.O.V.

I wake up at five. First time I actually, voluntarily get up this early in the morning. I slip from under the covers and head for the bathroom knowing Chase will wake up soon. I take a quick shower and dress in my nicest clothes. I kneel beside the bed and give Chase a chaste kiss.

"Love you Chase...I'll make sure that you and the baby are fine," I promise.

I lower the blanket to his hips and lift up his t-shirt. I lean forward and place a gentle, light-feather kiss to our baby.

"Take it easy on your papa," I smile affectionately.

Making sure Chase is still sleeping I get up from my position and grab a jacket. With one last longing look I close the door behind me. I make my way out the front door and leave. This is for the baby and for Chase, I think in my head.

Chase's P.O.V.

I wake up and stretch. Adam's gone? I question as his side of the bed is empty. I don't get much time to think as the baby makes me run to the bathroom. I puke the remains of the toast I had yesterday since that was all I really had to eat. I stay on the bathroom floor for minutes feeling dizzy. Adam's probably eating breakfast, I conclude.

I push myself off the floor and brush my teeth. My hand takes its usual place on my stomach and a small smile appears. Papa will find a way, I promise my unborn baby. I walk out the room and begin my search for Adam.

Half an hour later...

"Morning Chase," Leo smiles.

"Hey...have you seen Adam?" I ask.

"Um...nope," he answers.

"I have!" Eddie yells.

We both turn to face him.

"He left at 5:30," he adds.

"What?" Me and Leo ask.

"Yea look!"

He shows us the footage from this morning.

Adam takes one last look behind him. He sighs and turns back his hand on the handle. Hesitantly he pulls the door open and walks out. Just as steadily he closes it behind him without turning back.

I feel my heart jump to my throat. He left...

Leo turns to the clock and notes it's seven. He's gone...

My eyes sting and my chest constricts. My vision gets fuzzy and the horrible feeling of being on my own without Adam takes my breath away. I know this feeling all too well now. I hate passing out but right now the welcoming darkness clouds my vision and then I fall.

Davenport's P.O.V.

"Chase!" I call.

He's in some sort of trance but knowing that clouded expression I catch him before he falls. I turn to Leo and Leo glares at Eddie's screen. I turn to see the footage of Adam leaving at 5:30 in the morning.

"Well that's a first," I mutter under my breath.

"Is he okay?" Leo asks.

"Yes he's just shocked and incredibly weak," I sigh.

"...Adam wouldn't leave...right?" He questions.

"Then why did he?"

"I don't know! He...Adam has his reasons," I reply.

"But Chase-"

"Chase needs him I know just let me get him settled and we'll go find him," I interrupt.

Leo nods and runs to his room to change.

"Donald?" Tasha calls.

"Chase passed out, Adam left, and I'm taking the kids to find him so no school," I explain as I put Chase on the couch.

"Yes...we have to find Adam...if Chase falls into depression there's no telling what will happen to the baby and all this will affect them," I answer.

"You mean..." she trails off.

"Yes...He can't take much more stress even though I'm one of the reasons," I sigh as I tuck him in with a blanket.

"He's going to be alright," she promises.

"I definitely hope so..."

Leo and Bree come in rushing down the hall.

"Let's go, now! We might be able to catch him!" Bree says.

"Bree?"

"We best split up," she says before she's out the door.

I nod and grab my keys, "come on Leo."

We run out the door and to the car all the while I'm cursing Adam for abandoning Chase.

Chase's P.O.V.

I open my eyes to the bright lights of the living room. I hear rustling in the kitchen and the smell of food fills the house. Tasha comes in with a bowl of hot chicken noodle soup. I sit up as she sits down.

"Hungry?" She asks with a motherly tone.

I'm about to reject the food when my stomach growls. I blush but she just smiles sympathetically. I start eating when half way through my soup the front door flies open. Mr. Davenport, Leo, and Bree come in looking exhausted. But no Adam.

"How long have I been out?" I ask softly.

"It's five in the afternoon," Mr. Davenport sighs.

"...no sign of Adam?" Tasha questions.

"No," they all shake their heads.

I place the spoon down and sigh. There's a lump in my throat and my chest hurts. First Mr. Davenport breaks his promise and now Adam...daddy loves you...He wouldn't leave us without a reason, I repeat that mantra in my head.

"We tried calling," Bree says.

"We all did...He didn't answer," Leo whispers solemnly.

"He wouldn't leave without a reason," Mr. Davenport adds my thoughts exactly.

"I...can I be alone?" I ask quietly.

"Of course...We'll go try and track his GPS signal instead," he nods.

They all file out to head to the lab. As they leave I lie back down on the couch, food forgotten. The blanket drapes over my small frame. I wrap it tighter to myself and go in to the fetal position. My eyes closed shut and a few tears escape. One thought fills my mind, Adam. The front door opens but in my state of mind I can't even think, much less realize my surroundings.
