Marc POV (District 1)
Aim the bow, keep the sight, and release the arrow.
It only takes one arrow to eliminate someone from the Games. I have her in my sights and in a matter of seconds, this will all be over for her. The others see her as well and they're letting me finish the job. She doesn't realize that we're watching her. Her lack of awareness will be her downfall.
Aim the bow, keep the sight, and release the arrow.
Annaliese POV (District 8)
It's hard to do this alone.
The silence of sitting in the woods without company is a scary thought. Loneliness is not just a feeling but it's my reality now. Paxon (District 5) and Hollyn (District 4) were my closest allies, my rock. The other District 8 tributes, while they were my friends, had their own agenda and mission to survive in the arena. Cotton (District 8) died during the opening Bloodbath and I saw Gaelan's (District 8) face in the sky recently; Tessie (District 8) is somewhere out there but I don't have hope that I will see her again. Both of us are pretty inexperienced to fighting and it's just a matter of time. More than half of the tributes are dead and we need to hold out until the others perish.
I met Paxon and Hollyn during the pre-Hunger Games phase at the Capitol. While waiting at the knife-throwing station, Hollyn struck up a chat and we started discussing the other tributes in the Games. We both saw the twist this year as a way for entire districts to be eliminated together at once instead of having a fighting chance. Surviving in groups helps the Careers until they start turning on each other but even with that, it doesn't guarantee that the districts will stick together. A better strategy is to pull tributes from different districts and stick together to outlive the beginning phases. We struck up a secret alliance and went to work by pulling others in. Alice (District 3), Paxon (District 5) and Mason (District 11) accepted the offers but when the time came, only Paxon, Hollyn and I escaped the Bloodbath alive. We did pretty well for a while together but now I'm alone.
"Ahhhhhhhh!"
Boom!
The sudden sound of the canon and the scream pulls me back from my daydream. Another tribute has died in the arena and now the numbers are down slightly. From the sound of the scream, it was a girl and she must be in the area. A hovercraft flies overhead and I move to catch a glimpse at which tribute has died. No one is currently being pulled; the hovercraft is on its way to pick-up the fallen tribute. I take the next few minutes to find a clearing through the trees that will show the hovercraft and the tribute's last location but no luck. As the large mechanical machine soars overhead a minute later, I finally see which tribute has died: the little girl from District 7.
I'm not sure how she died but someone must have found her. I'd guess to say another tribute was the result of her death instead of something like the elements. The little girl and I experienced the same fate as we're all alone without the help of our district mates now. While I had an alliance to help me, all her allies died on the first day. I never want to suffer the same fate as her – I need to play smart now.
The sun has set and the last canon I heard was possibly a few hours ago. The arena is dark again; however, this night is different than the last. Instead of the pitch black night, the sky is illuminated with thousands of stars lighting up the arena. For the first time in days, I can clearly see the forest around me at night and the entire arena from my sitting place. I drop my bag beside the tree and arm my axe in case someone tries to surprise me. I spent most of the afternoon climbing up a large hill and setting up a temporary base camp for the night – sleep is a commodity I didn't realize I'd miss. I can see almost the entire arena from where I'm sitting; to my north are trees and the rocky cliff below while to the south-west is the large pyramid and Cornucopia. The Cornucopia is far away but I can somewhat make out a tiny red glow from the fire at the Careers' base camp.
The Careers claimed the Cornucopia on the first day and they've been using the area to survive. Plenty of supplies and weapons line the walls and floor of the structure. I wish that they could lose their supplies and try to survive like the rest of us! They won the upper hand on the first day and have held the high ground to replenish their supplies. If someone doesn't stop them, they could ride this momentum to the end.
A large crash echoes throughout the arena and for a second I consider this to be another fallen tribute. Wait... that's not the sound of the canon. It's different and louder than the normal noise, thunder crashes and I turn my head to stare at the night sky. Several of the stars have begun to move – my father once told me that these are called shooting stars. It's a pretty sight to see and something beautiful to change up the horrors of the Games. Another loud crash but this time one of the shooting stars turns red – the glow brightens up the sky to the point that it looks bigger. The star is getting closer!
In one split second, every light in the night sky disappears except for one single star at the far edge of the sky. The glowing orb is bright red and this time I am certain that it's moving. The red and yellow round orb is moving closer and closer.
Is it going to hit the arena?!
Wyatt POV (District 4)
It's my turn on watch tonight.
Nothing normally happens at night at the Cornucopia. I'm left to keep the fire going while the others are out looking for more tributes and bring down the numbers. No one outside of the Careers would dare to come to the Cornucopia and risk fighting any of us for the supplies. After the opening battles at the Bloodbath, a few of us spent some time collecting all the items at the base of the pyramid to bring up top. The only way to collect supplies would be to risk the chance and fight one of us. We've done well the last few days, knocking out more than half the tributes but the strange thing is, we've lost a few of us to strange occurrences.
Abram (District 2) and Allure (District 1) were lost on the first day; sloppy mistakes and lucky hits eliminated them from the competition. They weren't from District 4 so it didn't mean much to me in the long run. The strange loses were two of our best warriors: Levin (District 1) and Todd (District 4). Both could easily defeat any tribute and yet they fell because of weaklings – one pulled off a cliff while the other in a fire. I didn't see either of these happen but Collette (District 2) did and explained the situation when she came back. Kendra (District 4) confirmed that Levin died while on patrol, but she confided in me that she didn't actual see him die, Collette pulled her away before the fire spread further.
I don't trust Collette. Could they have died like she said? Yes. Still, I have to always be a little cautious. She's a wildcard who doesn't quite fit like a normal Career. She's more cold and calculating than a physical threat. I have to be on guard to be sure that the next knife I see won't be the one she sticks in my back.
"Wyatt..."
I turn around and I see someone walk up the steps of the large structure. A boy with a shaved head is carrying a large stack of wood and he looks a tad tired from his night of patrol. Knox (District 2) places the few pieces of wood next to a lonely box and he drops his weapon along with it. Several hours ago when the sun was still up, the team divided into two groups to search for the remaining tributes. Knox, along with Envy (District 1) and Piper (District 2), went in one direction while Kendra, Collette and Marc (District 1) went in the other. I decided to stay back and watch over our base camp.
"Where are the others?"
"They're down below and bringing up the rear. We heard the canon a while ago but still couldn't find anyone. Anything new?"
"No. The others haven't come back yet and no new canons since the last one. The Gamemakers must be frustrated."
Envy reaches the top of the building and places her items down. She nods in my direction and sits by the fire, staring up at the sky. Knox and I continue our chat as Piper joins us after the next minute. Our rag tag group of Careers have preserved but for tomorrow, we need to go on the offensive.
"Look at that!"
Envy points at the sky and we stare up to see the many stars start moving. Hundreds begin shooting across the night sky and moving at an alarming speed. We all keep quiet to marvel at the beauty of the scene until something catches my eye. The sky turns completely dark except for a glowing red orb at the far side; it pulsates and glows bright, almost warning us of an imminent danger. I stare in quiet fear until the red orb starts moving direction and closer to our direction, getting bigger and bigger with each second. Thunder echoes throughout the arena and the red orb starts glowing yellow as well. Fire pierces the sky and in that moment, I realize what's happening: the orb is falling and it's going to crash!
The glowing ball of fire is getting closer and it will soon crash into the pyramid. I grab an axe off the ground and start yelling at the others to run away from the structure before it hits. Knox pushes himself off the ground, continually staring at the red orb in the sky. Envy start screaming when she catches a glimpse and moves away from the fire while Piper is arming herself and bracing for a potential disaster. Will the orb hit the pyramid or the surrounding area?
I turn away and start running across the top of the pyramid. How many more seconds until it hits? Five? Two? Will there be enough time to get down and to safety? Curiosity gets the best of me and I look behind just in time to see the giant fiery orb – a meteorite – break through the sky and crash to the top of the pyramid. The large glowing rock destroys the Cornucopia and the impact of its arrival sets in motion a series of events that I could never have expected.
Fire erupts from the crash and in a split second – possibly the same amount of time it takes to blink – I'm lifted off the ground by the size of the impact and sent flying through the air. The fire moves quickly and I see a large blaze engulf Piper as the fire spreads across the entire top of the pyramid. My vision is blurry but if the fire didn't kill her, the destruction of the pyramid would surely do it. The building breaks apart and pieces of stone – from the tiniest pebble to the largest block – explode from our former base camp.
The impact keeps me in the air for a few seconds until I crash hard to the ground. If I hurt this much from the crash, the others must be in pain as well. Blood spills out of my mouth and my head throbs in pain. I can't move, my arms and legs are possibly broken and the sudden rush is keeping me down.
Did Knox and Envy get out alive?
Where am I?
That's the last thought I have when I see it coming: a large piece of burning broken rock from the pyramid is flying in my direction!
Knox POV (District 2)
The falling star was stronger than I thought.
Envy was the first to spot it in the sky and once we figured out what it was going to do, we had to run. The star crashed into the Cornucopia and the building blew up from the impact. I was almost to the stairs once it hit but that was already too late. The impact of the crash sent me flying off the top of the structure and through the air, passed a few trees. Luckily I was able to grab onto a branch while in the air to slow down the trajectory – if I had hit the base of the tree or the ground, I would surely be dead. My shoulder might be dislocated; there is intense pain as I hold onto the branch with one arm.
I slowly climb down the tree and forcibly reattach my shoulder but I don't know if I did it right. The pain is still there and I may have broken something instead. The impact sent me quite a far distance from the pyramid and I catch a glimpse of my former base camp. Fire and smoke flow to the sky and hundreds of pieces of rock are strewn around the field from opening day. To think that only minutes ago, I had just arrived to the top of the pyramid and expecting to sleep for the rest of the night. I wonder if the others survived the impact but I can't assume until I see their bodies. I'm about to walk toward the burning building until I feel something.
The movement is gentle at first but the world starts to shake. The sudden change pushes me to hold onto a tree as I watch the remainder of the building collapse in on itself and a cloud of fire erupts to the sky. The ground continues to move and that's when I realize that this event is not over just yet: this is an earthquake!
Loud noises of trees falling echo and I see cracks starting to form from the ground at the base of the demolished pyramid. I let go of the tree and start moving through the forest, keeping a close eye on the pyramid while looking for my allies. The arena shifts and I see a large piece of the ground move up from the ground as more cracks spread. A tree in front of my falls to the ground and another is covered in flames. I need to get out of her before a tree falls on me next.
A large seismic split moves behind me and I see the ground shift slightly to open up. I run through the forest and as I brush passed a tree, I trip on something on the ground. For a second I believe it to be a burning charred rock from the pyramid until I see the wide eyes. Envy's lifeless body is splayed on the ground, a broken doll and gentle doll cover with tiny spots of ash and moss. While I had the lucky chance of grabbing a tree branch, she must have collided with the grass after the meteorite hit. If she's dead then the others must be dead too. The earthquake is ranging out and the ground is destroying itself with each new attack.
If I don't get away soon, I'll be dead next.
Tessie POV (District 8)
Boom!
Boom!
Boom!
What is going on?!
For some reason there was a loud crash and now the arena is shaking uncontrollably. I was sleeping underneath the cover of ivy; hiding out from the tributes who patrol at night when I heard the loud noise. I've managed to hide this far but something is going on and I have no idea.
Smoke is covering the sky and I see a large glow coming from the north. Fire must be spreading throughout the forest; a play from the Gamemakers to eliminate a large number of the tributes. The earthquake is getting worse and I can barely keep my balance on the grass – the sounds of animals screeching also breaks the night silence. Several trees collapse up ahead and the ground is shifting, moving underneath my feet and either rising to the sky or opening up below. A large shift opens to my left and I watch as several trees fall into the opening and cave in.
The ground separates up ahead as well and dirt begins to fall in. The normally small cracks and earthquake shifts fail in comparison to the growing void I'm seeing. The arena is breaking apart before my eyes and soon enough, nothing will be left. My balance gives way and I fall to the ground, holding on to a tree root and trying to regain my balance. If I let go of this root, I will fall into the void. A few more trees tip over into the growing void and I watch as the dirt slowly pours inside the hole. Slowly by surely, more and more of the ground fall in as my feet dangle over the opening. I reach further onto the root to try and pull myself back onto stable ground – I only have a few more seconds before more of the arena falls in.
My strength may not be great but it did help me at this moment. I reach up and pull myself a little closer up off the ground, using my feet to push myself up. At first I thought I would make it, I would safely get away from this disaster and out of harm's way until the unthinkable happened. The earthquake began to shift more erratically and the tree root, which I was holding onto, broke from the extra pressure. Without the stability of the root, I slid on the ground and fall into the void, watching as several rocks, piles of dirt and more trees follow me in the opening. My body hits a sharp rock and I begin to tumble further down the hole and eventually I will hit the bottom.
In a matter of seconds, I'm going to die.
Tanner POV (District 9)
Boom!
Another tribute bites the dust.
Ever since the earthquake began, tribute after tribute has fallen to this strange natural disaster. I watched as the meteorite hit earlier and felt the earthquake began as it's destroying the arena. Cliffs have given way, fallen trees scattered throughout the forest and uneven grounds are just some of the changes that resulted from the attack. The arena is changing before my eyes and I'm not sure what it will look like when it stops.
Disasters are natural for the Hunger Games. Forest fires, tornados, tidal waves, explosions and snow storms are previous ones that come to mind; this is the first I can remember that involved something coming from space. The Gamemakers must have waited long enough for us to make a big dent in the numbers – I guess they decided to do it for us. Canons have been firing a lot recently and soon enough more people will be gone. Cammie is my only ally from District 9 left and she is somewhere out there alone to fight these disasters. My hiding spot is a far distance from where the meteorite hit and I haven't experienced any of the major changes like the others have.
All I can do is watch and hope that she makes it till morning.
Cammie POV (District 9)
Tanner... where are you?!
I'm so scared.
Peter POV (District 12)
Keep alert.
The earthquake is shaking the arena wildly and everything is going off the rails. I haven't been able to keep my footing in over a minute as the ground beneath me is breaking up. I watched as the meteorite hit the Cornucopia and the building explode from the impact. I was near the field when it happened and nearly got killed by a flying rock; there was nowhere safe to hide. As I moved through the woods after the explosion, I found the crushed body of the District 4 boy and saw what could have been if the rock hit me. It was a sad sight to see for such a young kid.
Nothing is balanced in this state of shock. I'm moving from tree to tree, holding on to whatever I can to keep balance and move safely. A large selection of land rose up from the ground and started shifting to the side – I don't think this is simply an earthquake caused by the meteorite. The Gamemakers must be shaking up the arena from underground and changing up the layout of the land. Large holes and cracks are breaking up the ground and trees are collapsing from their place. One wrong step and a tribute could fall to their death. Never did I think that something like this would happen; I expected there to be something easy like rain or a fire. The Gamemakers must be desperate to trim down the numbers and speed the process along to find a winner.
My distraction worked against me as I took my eyes off the environment for a quick second. A tree that I was holding on to started to shake and I knew something was up. It began to move and the ground beneath me started to crack under my pressure. The tree shifted forward and came to crash in my direction, pining me under the large tree and crushing me underneath.
It's hard to breathe...
The pain is intense and I can taste blood but I'm still holding on. Soon this earthquake will stop and I can pull myself out from under this tree to find help. I need my District Mentor to send me assistance; some supplies and medicine that will treat these wounds to make me feel better – I need to survive and win this with the others.
"Peter!"
Was that an illusion? Someone called out to me but I can't tell if it was a dream.
I turn to see two people that I never thought I would ever see again come out from the forest: Scarlett and Janel (District 12).
Janel POV (District 12)
Peter looks like he's in a lot of pain.
Scarlett and I have been walking through the woods trying to find the other District 12 tributes. Unfortunately, we couldn't find Cody (District 12) but after we heard this crashing, we rushed to find Peter trapped under the tree. There's blood and I'm not sure how long he has left under that thing. I reach out for his hand and begin pulling on him; Scarlett, on the other hand, is trying to push the tree in the opposite direction. She tries a few times but the tree won't budge.
"It's not moving, I can't get it off him."
"You need to try – he'll die under there."
"Peter, you need to move."
"I'm... I'm stuck under here."
"Try harder!"
Scarlett pushes again and yet no movement. Blood drips down from Peter's nose and I can tell that there isn't much time left. I reach under the tree to lift it up and to give Peter some air room to breathe but it's not working; the heavy tree is trapped on top of him. Suddenly, the earthquake strikes harder and the tree shifts over and traps my arms underneath – the pain is immense.
"Ahhhhhh!"
When I try to move my hand out, it's unable to move. The tree is still on Peter and he's trapped but now I'm stuck with him. Scarlett tries to push and free me from the grasp; nothing she's doing is working.
Boom!
The canon fires and my worst fears come true. Peter is motionless and staring up at the sky; the weight of the tree has crushed him under the pressure and now he's dead. Only a few moments ago, I thought that District 12 would finally reunite and emerge as victorious but now, one is dead and I could potentially be joining him. The tree is a heavy oak and nothing could cut through without an axe. I need a miracle...
Scarlett continues to push and yet nothing. I start digging at the dirt while pushing Peter's body to make some room but it's not enough. Before I'm about to give up, I hear the sound of shifting and I see the cracks emerge from under the base of the tree. The weight is too much and it's tearing up the ground below, slowly sinking into the earth like the moving pieces of ground around the arena. I scream at Scarlett to help but she can't, the tree is sinking and it's taking me with it.
"Scarlett! Help!"
Those are the only words I can muster as the cracks begin to form and the ground gives way. Scarlett watches me as the tree and Peter's body sink into the ground. The land opens up and I fall into the dark nothing – screaming as fall into the darkness until I see something glowing coming up.
It's not the light... it's the barrier... it's my death.
Scarlett POV (District 12)
Coincidence is a funny thing.
Just when I thought it would be a hard feet to win the Hunger Games by killing my District 12 mates, two are eliminated by fate. I didn't even have to lift a finger and both were killed by the arena. Someone out there loves me.
Boom!
Flint POV (District 5)
We need to keep running.
Kaeli (District 5) and I have partnered together since the first day of the Games. I protected her from a potential death and we've stuck together, watching each other's backs. We're the only two tributes left from District 5 – the only way for both of us to win this year's Games is to stick together and survive. The earthquake and arena shifts haven't helped to avoid an imminent death as we've come plenty of times to almost being struck by a tree or falling into a hole. It seems that the closer a tribute was to the Cornucopia, the worse the tremors and earthquake felt. We weren't close but unfortunately not far enough to escape the madness.
Kaeli runs over a fallen tree and we both keep a lookout for anything to happen next. If we can get as far away from the meteorite as we can, we'll survive the night. I run ahead and push through fallen branches and moving rocks. Another shake erupts and we're both pushed off balance to fall on the ground, practically tumbling to two different sides of the tree. The ground shifts and I see the grass open up as the fallen tree is descends into the dirt, leaving nothing but a fissure that contains to grow. I yell at Kaeli to jump over or run around in time but the earthquake is keeping her from standing up properly.
Kaeli looks worried and I yell for her to stay where she is. I look around to find a way over but all I can see is the opening getting bigger and bigger; more of the dirt and rocks are breaking apart into the void. I push myself off the ground and spend the next few minutes searching for a way across without falling in. If I were to find the end of the opening, I could jump over and join back up with Kaeli. I start running into the forest and look to find a way but that's when I hear it.
Boom!
The sound of the canon. Oh no! The earthquake is still ranging on and gently I move back to my spot to see Kaeli standing up... standing so still. Her eyes are wide open and in a mere moment, she collapses to the ground and I see the knife sticking out of her back. Another throwing knife flies through the air and collides at a tree beside me. I turn to see the blade and then I notice several tributes step out from the forest; arming their weapons for a potential attack. The Careers have arrived but only three of them are standing before me: Marc, the District 4 girl and the District 2 girl with the throwing knives.
There's no point to stay and fight; Kaeli is already dead and I will be next. I move around and head back into the forest, away from the Careers on the other side of the opening. With Kaeli's death, the twist no longer applies to District 5.
If my district is to win, it will be me alone.
Kendra POV (District 4)
The tribute girl is gone.
Collette spotted her through the forest and urged us to attack while she was distracted. She threw the blade and it made an impact on the first try; I never realized how good she was even during something like the earthquake. Marc was impressed while I'm more worried about the disaster around us. Plenty of trees have fallen and the ground is shifting every few seconds. The meteorite hit the pyramid a while ago and I don't know if the others made it out alive. Did Wyatt survive?
Suddenly, the earthquake stops and the arena no longer moves. For the first time in what seemed like an eternity, I can breathe a moment of peace and wonder if the horror has finally ended. The District 5 boy has disappeared farther into the woods and we're left alone beside the dead body of his fallen ally. Her eyes stare wide at me and I can barely look at her anymore; I tell the others that I need to take a breath and I walk into the woods alone. For what used to be a beautiful forest is now a destroyed wasteland. A majority of the trees are still standing but it's those that have fallen and the changing of the ground that really defines what new terrain we'll now have to endure. I walk deeper into the forest and spot a visual of the destroyed pyramid, a huddled mass of rock and smoke that has caved in on itself. To think that only a few hours ago I was sitting on top with the other Careers and discussing the other tributes still left around.
Back at the Capitol before the Games even started, I didn't do much of the training too seriously. I spent more time practicing my fighting stances compared to the political angle of alliances. Hollyn (District 4) and the other District 4 tributes were my only closest allies; Hollyn even confided in me that she was abandoning the Careers to work with other tributes – I kept her secret. Silence is a great asset as no one questions what you'll do next; all I had to do was watch and listen. Collette is the only other Career who has shown interest in being an ally beyond just the Career alliance; she became extra close after Levin died in the forest fire. Both surviving the blaze must have shown that I can be trusted or she just wants to keep me close from figuring out a secret? Levin did die mysteriously but he's from District 1 and it didn't really change my game. Though, Todd did die and Collette was the only one to see this...
My daydream distracts me from my thoughts and I realize that I've been walking for a long time. I need to get back to the group and join up with the others. I walk passed a tree and I hear the faint sounds of arguing coming from where the others are waiting. As I step into the light and see the meeting place, I'm shocked at the last moments I never expected: Collette and Marc arguing as Collette shoves him back and he falls into the void.
I gasp loudly and Collette turns around to see me staring from the woods.
Boom!
"What have you done?!"
"Kendra... it was an accident, I swear!"
"Get away from me, Traitor!"
I begin running through the forest, away from the girl I thought I could call my friend. Marc... Levin... Todd... she had to have killed them all. There is no way that Marc's death was an accident. She's been planning this for a long time and eliminating those she saw as a threat; if I was a stronger tribute, she would have killed me back at the fire days ago. How stupid am I? I believed her lies and supported them when she explained it to the group. We could have solved this a long time ago.
"Kendra!"
Collette is screaming for me, possibly trying to find me in the woods to explain herself. Her chance to tell me more lies about why she killed Marc. I need to head back to the Cornucopia and find the others; to tell them what she did. Piper and Knox will try to support her but they're from District 2, the others will help me.
I pass a tree and I come to a complete stop at the edge of a fissure. The earthquake must have left large openings like this one around the arena for us to fall in or for some to be pushed in... like Marc. Before I can even leave the space, Collette appears out of nowhere and her presence causes me to stumble, to slip at the edge and fall down the hole.
A hand reaches out and grabs me. Collette is trying to save me but why didn't she save Marc?
"Hold still Kendra, I'll help you get up."
"How do I know this isn't a trick?!"
"I'm trying to save you."
"You killed Marc – that wasn't an accident! I know you also killed Todd and Levin too."
"You don't know that, it was an accident with Marc. We have to get you back to the others – I need you to pull yourself up."
"If you really mean it, don't let go."
"I'm not strong enough... you need to pull up... Kendra, climb up!"
"I'm trying... I'm..."
In a mere split second, I can feel my grasp loosening up. I'm not sure whether I'm the one letting go or if she is as my hand slips from her grasp.
"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!"
All I can do is stare up at Collette kneeling at the grasp with her hand out, watching me falling to my death. I'll never know if she really tried to save me or if she purposely let me go; the coming impact from the fall will surely kill me.
Boom!
Collette POV (District 2)
She's dead.
I really tried. I really tried to save Kendra from the fall, to keep her from dying but I let her go. She was too heavy and I'm not strong enough. As I tried to hold and she flailed around to climb up, I felt myself giving way and almost falling into the hole. If I didn't let her go, I would be tumbling with her down the cliffs into the void. I wanted to save Kendra but I couldn't.
It wasn't always supposed to turn out this way.
