We do not remember days, we remember moments.-Cesare Pavese
Amber and Luke walked down the street, the icy winter air hitting their cheeks.
"I should have grabbed a jacket before we left," Amber said. " but I'm glad I live near a coffee shop."
Luke chuckled at her and his chuckle turned into a smile, showing off his perfect teeth. Amber looked away, Don't forget about Spencer. She told herself. Luke held the door open for her when they arrived at the coffee shop. They went inside and ordered coffee, once their coffee was paid for and ready they sat down at a table next to the fireplace.
" So, Amber," Luke began as he took a sip of his coffee. " how are you?"
" I'm good." She said as she took a sip of coffee, not breaking eye contact. She knew Luke had a trick up his sleeve, and she knew she was going to be ready this time of anything happened.
"That's good. I feel like I haven't seen you in ages."
" You saw me this morning , in class. Which you darted out of so fast."
Luke laughed," well yeah! The second you told me you were engaged I had to get you an engagement present."
Amber slowly bobbed her head at him. " okay, Okay, fair enough."
Luke put his hand over her lonley hand that was sitting on the table, her other hand was cradling her coffee against her chest. " you are so damn beautiful." He whispered to her. It sent chills down her spine and caused her face to turn red.
"Luke," she hissed as she took her hand off the table as quickly as she could.
Luke sat back in his chair. " well it's true," he said before taking another sip of coffee.
" but you know I love Spencer."
" but does he love you?" Luke asked.
Amber raised an eyebrow and said in a defensive tone, " what do you mean? Of course he does."
"If he really loved you he would spend more time with you,"
" But his job..."
"Don't give me that crap," Luke cut her off. "Is his job more important than you?"
"Yes," Amber said flatly.
"No it isn't. So he's with the FBI. And he helps people."
"He saves people. " Amber quipped.
" well while he's out there saving people, who's saving you?" Luke took a quick sip of coffee then continued, " I know how lonely you are. I can tell. I know he doesn't do anything for you. Doesn't pleasure you."
"Be quiet." Amber mumbled.
"Amber, you are about to marry this man and you don't even know if he can...satisfy you? Come on now."
"Luke not everything is about sex," Amber said as she lowered her voice.
"Well, no. But everything that isn't about sex ends up being about sex. You will run out of things to talk about... Sooner or later you two will have to consummate the marriage."
Amber had to admit, Luke had a bit of a point. She loved Spencer but she had needs. And she knew Spencer did too, every man does, even geniuses like Spencer. "I guess." Amber finally replied.
Luke reached into his one back pocket and pulled out his wallet. He pulled a credit card out. "Here,"
Amber sat there, once again in confusion. "What's this for?"
" whenever Spencer isn't there. Treat yourself to a shopping spree or a massage on me."
"I can't take that Luke."
"Just take it Amber. My family has so much money we don't know what to do with it all. Just think of it as a gift. You are my best friend. Remember how close we were in high school? Back in Ohio? How we talked about come to D.C to go to college?"
"Yes I remember." Amber admitted.
"I remember how badly you wanted to become a writer, I know you still do. And I know how talented you are."
Amber had a feeling this was going in the wrong direction, she shook her head. Everything was starting to piece together. Why he was asking all of the private details of her relationship and why he was giving her all of these 'gifts'."Is this why you are being nice to me?" Amber began, she could feel her face turning red, blood rushing to it. "So you can get close to me? Giving me things like your credit card and a new car just so you can think you are doing something for me? And what do I have to give in return? You are just saying all of these things so you can get me all buttered up and then I can't say no to whatever you want." Amber reached into her pocket and slammed the keys and credit card on the table. She got up from her chair and got out of the coffee place as fast as she could. She quickly walked down the street to her apartment building.
She opened the door to the lobby and up the steps to her floor. She unlocked the door and entered her home. She saw Spencer's shoes sitting next to the door. She had this warm feeling in her stomach. She slipped off her shoes, then shut and locked the door behind her. She walked down the hall to the bedroom. There was Spencer, sprawled out on the bed, fast asleep. Amber leaned against the doorframe and just watched him sleep.
"I know you're standing there," Spencer mumbled.
Amber jumped a little. "Sorry," She said as she tucked some of her hair behind her ear. She walked over to the bed and sat down. She watched Spencer as he sat up, he got up off of the bed and stretched. His long arms almost hit the ceiling. It reminded her of a book her mother used to read to her. "Have you ever heard of the book, "Guess how much I love you?'"
Spencer sweetly smiled at her. " Yes I have."
" When you stretched like that it reminded me of the book." Amber said as she walked over to Spencer. He still had a smile on his face. His warm inviting smile made Amber weak. She stood in front of the tall man, she stood on her tippy toes to give him a kiss on the lips. She lowered down and smiled up at him. He put his arms around her waist and she flung her arms around his neck. Spencer pressed his soft lips to hers and a surge of what felt like electricity flowed through them.
Spencer pulled away from the kiss and looked deep into her green eyes. "I love kissing your lips," he whispered breathless into her ear. Amber felt herself shutter.
"Yeah," was all Amber could fathom.
"Mhmm," Spencer said as he started kissing her neck.
" Wait wait," Amber blurted out as she slowly pushed Spencer away.
"What's wrong?" Spencer asked as he held onto her shoulders.
"I don't know, I don't feel like you're you." Amber admitted.
" Amber," Spencer began. "I mean we are engaged now. I want to show you how much I love you. I feel like...like I haven't really been trying. Like I've been skimming the surface. I know our love is deeper."
