Day 29: Lurid

(Guest Author: Lumos314)

"Good afternoon, Wright." The chief prosecutor glanced up from his paperwork as the lawyer came into his office.

"Hello, my ardent paramour."

Edgeworth started. "Excuse me?" He was giving Phoenix his full attention, now.

"Our coming together is inexorable. Despite the fact that we stand on opposite sides of the courtroom, in order to satisfy our similar interests we must join and work as one!" He stepped closer and the prosecutor, his hand over his forehead to hide his frankly terrified expression, surreptitiously slid back a few inches in his office chair.

"I realize that the last time you did this, you were on very, very strong cold medication, but I don't recall you being sick recently." Edgeworth continued to move away as the lawyer's face broke into a puzzled expression.

"I'm perfectly fine. What are you talking about?"

"I appreciate that you care about me deeply, Wright, but could you please stop declaring your lurid sentiments in such a manner while I'm trying to do paperwork!"

"Why am I getting the feeling that 'paramour' doesn't mean 'bitter rival'?"

Phoenix was still standing with that clueless expression, but the prosecutor suddenly felt relieved. He slid back to his desk and let out a shaky, frustrated sigh. "No, not in the slightest. Why on Earth would you think that?"

The lawyer's arm snaked to the back of his neck. "Ha ha ha, uh, Maya found some words for me to use."

Yet again, Edgeworth's hand went to his forehead, but for a decidedly different reason. There was a loud slap. "You really need to stop trying to impress me with your minute vocabulary. A paramour is an illicit lover."

During the silence that followed, Phoenix's face grew almost as red as Apollo's suit. He opened his mouth to speak, and then promptly changed his mind.

"Perhaps it would be best for you to extricate yourself from this situation."

The lawyer finally found his voice. "This. This is why I don't trust Maya, and why I don't talk like you."

The prosecutor smirked. "Heh, only those who are erudite can speak in such a refined manner."

"Oh, so you find this funny, do you?"

His response was merely a wider smirk.

There was a moment of silence as Phoenix scowled. Then he broke into a wide grin and his eyes narrowed. "So, wait. I can't express my 'lurid sentiments' in that way and while you're doing paperwork. But you never said anything about when you're finished."

"Urk!" Edgeworth immediately regretted his choice in words as the attorney began to come closer again.

"Maybe we could head back to my apartment afterwards?" He winked and burst into laughter as the prosecutor huffed and made his way towards the door.

"I think it's time for me to extricate myself." He strode out the room and shut the door, standing in front of it. There was a banging sound a moment later.

"Hey! Come on, Edgeworth! Let me out!"

"Perhaps I will once you've decided to maintain a mature and professional attitude." There was a sigh from the other side.

"Can't you let me win just once?"

"No."

"Spoilsport."
