Chapter 29
Spanish class got out five minutes after the bell rang. Maggie and I were walking out of class when some girls walked by and started to whisper. I looked for Pogue but he wasn't anywhere around. The hallway was packed but I didn't see a glimpse of him. I waved bye to Maggie and headed for Chemistry. There were more people pointing and whispering than usual. I pulled my bag closer to me and headed to class.
I walked into class and took my seat. Kayla walked into class and gave me look. I wasn't sure what that look was for but I really didn't care. I pulled out my book and waited for Pogue. I looked around the room and played with my ring. I looked down at it and smiled. I also had my bracelet and earrings on too. The final bell rang. I looked up but Pogue still wasn't in class. I started to worry. Mr. Avery handed us back our pop quiz. I didn't bother to look at mine.
He started his lecture but I was too worried to even take notes. I looked at my phone and noticed a missed text from Sarah.
*Sarah – Big fight during P.E. Boys are with the Provost
I looked around to make sure Mr. Avery didn't see me on my phone. He was walking towards my table. I dropped my phone in my bag. He stood by my table as he gave his lecture. I let out a deep breath and began to take notes. I only heard half of the lecture. My mind kept running through different scenarios the guys could have gotten into but nothing seemed to fit. I was biting on my lip when I felt my bag vibrate. I knew it was my phone but the teacher was still at my desk. The time on the clock showed class was over in two minutes.
He finally walked away from the table and I reached in my bag for my phone.
*Caleb – Meet me at the front steps
*Me – Ok
The bell rang and I put my book and notes into my bag. I grabbed my bag and headed out the door. As soon as I was out the door, Kayla started to walk with me. I ignored her and continued to the front of the school.
"You do realize that it's your fault that Pogue got in trouble," she said with a smug voice.
I looked at her out of the corner of my eye. My hands were balled into fist. I wanted to say something but I ignored her. I would wait until I saw Caleb. I looked ahead and noticed Sarah was standing by girls' bathroom. She was talking to Maggie.
"Sarah," I yelled. She turned and looked relieved to see me. Kayla was still next to me.
"I can't believe you slept with Aaron at Pogue's party," Kayla scoffed as we neared Sarah. My heart started to beat faster. I looked at her just as we stopped in front of Sarah and Maggie.
"What did you say?" I asked surprised. I turned to look at her. She had a smug look on her face.
"You heard me," she said in a bitchy tone. She had her hands on her hips.
I took a step towards her but Sarah grabbed my hand before I could do anything. I really wanted to slap the crap out of her. Kayla raised an eyebrow at me and smirked. Sarah pulled me back before I could even think of moving.
"You shouldn't repeat stupid rumors," Maggie said glaring at Kayla. "All it did was made you look stupid." Maggie pushed me and Sarah towards the front doors. I gave Kayla a dirty look before I walked towards the front doors.
We walked through the doors and headed down the stairs. Caleb and Tyler were by their cars talking. They looked upset but I couldn't hear what they were saying. I looked around for Reid and Pogue but I didn't see them anywhere. I pulled out my phone but there were no missed calls or texts. Caleb turned as we got closer. I almost stopped in my tracks. He had a cut above his eye and a mark across his cheek. I could tell the mark would turn into a dark bruise.
"What happen?" I asked nervously. I was standing in front of Caleb but he was looking away from me. "Caleb, don't ignore me," I said irritated. "Tyler, Tyler," I shouted. He finally turned around and I gasped. Maggie was by his side as soon as he turned around. His lip was cut and he had blood on his nose. He had a bruise forming over his eye. There was swelling and it looked like it was getting worse.
Sarah was standing next to Caleb. "There was a fight during P.E. Aaron, Bordy, Ryan and Adam started a fight with Caleb, Reid, Tyler and Pogue," Sarah explained. "It started in the locker room and spilled out into the gym." She rubbed Caleb's arm. I noticed his knuckles were bruised and scraped.
I picked up Caleb's hand and turned it over gently. His palms were scraped as well. I placed his hand down and walked over to Tyler. He turned away when I reached for his hand. The damage on his hand was only on his knuckles. I released his hand and touched his face. He winced when I touched his eye. I bit my lip as my eyes began to tear up.
"I trust you will take care of this Provost Higgins," Aunt Evelyn's voice echoed across the parking lot. She sounded irritated. I turned to see her walking down the stairs with the Provost next to her. Reid and Pogue were behind them. She looked over at us before looking at the Provost. "The boys will take the suspension for the rest of the day and tomorrow." She looked in her purse and pulled out her keys.
"Mrs. Danvers," Provost Higgins sounded a bit scared. "The boys were caught fighting on school grounds and with this type…"
"These boys were provoked into fighting. I suggest you do a thorough investigation into Mr. Abbot's actions. I believe there were enough witnesses to confirm my son's story," she stated as she pulled back her shoulders and stared down the Provost. The door to the school opened and out walked Aaron and a man who looked like an older version of him.
We stayed where we were at and didn't move. Tyler reached for me and pulled me next to him. I was looking at Pogue. He had a cut lip and a bruise forming on his right cheek. Reid had a bruise forming on his left eye and a cut on his right jaw. They were both looking at Aaron as he walked down the stairs. Aaron's lip was cut and bruised. His eye was almost swollen shut. There was bruise along his jaw and his nose was swollen and bloody.
"Provost, I want these boys to have the same suspension as my son and his friends," Mr. Abbot snarled as he stood in front of the Provost. "I don't give a damn that their parents are on the Board of Trustees for the school." He looked at Aunt Evelyn with a look of pure hatred. "That Neanderthal right there," he hissed pointing to Pogue. "Almost broke my sons jaw."
Caleb started to walk towards them but Aunt Evelyn looked at him and he stopped in his tracks. He took a couple of steps back and Sarah grabbed his arm. Aunt Evelyn looked fierce as she turned and looked at Mr. Abbot. Pogue looked down trying to hide a smile. Reid looked at Aaron with a smirk on his face.
"Davis, if I were you," she said facing Mr. Abbot. "I would count my blessings and be thankful that your son is only suspended for two weeks." She motioned for Reid and Pogue to join us. Aaron looked in our direction with hatred on his face.
"What do you mean by that Evelyn?" Mr. Abbot asked stepping towards Aunt Evelyn.
I gave Pogue a hug and held him close. I pushed back the tears and slowly relaxed in his arms. Reid rubbed my arm as he walked by me. I still didn't know what was going on but I felt safe in Pogue's arms.
"Davis you're lucky that son of yours wasn't charged for assault," she replied angrily.
"What are you insinuating?" he asked taking a step back. He looked at Aaron but he just shrugged. They both turned to face Aunt Evelyn.
"You're Neanderthal of a son left a hand shape bruise on my niece's arm," answered Aunt Evelyn in a calm voice. She took a step towards Mr. Abbot. You could hear the anger in her voice. "He also grabbed her and ran his hand along her thigh and later pushed her up against a locker while making sexual remarks." Provost Higgins looked at Aaron. He looked away.
"Maybe your niece was asking for it," Mr. Abbot suggested. "Girls are constantly throwing themselves at my son." The guys all walked forward.
Aunt Evelyn looked at them. "Stay where you are," she said loudly. The guys stopped, but you could feel the anger rolling off of them. Aunt Evelyn looked at Mr. Abbot. The look in her eyes was deadly. "Davis, keep your son away from my niece and the boys. He so much as looks at her," she said with such venom, I thought Mr. Abbot would drop dead on the spot. "I will have your son charged with assault and harassment," Aunt Evelyn was staring at Mr. Abbot with fury in her eyes. "As member of the Board of Trustees for Spencer Academy, I will bring him in front of the board for an expulsion hearing." She didn't move. She stayed right in front of him.
Mr. Abbot scoffed. "You can't be serious Evelyn. The boys have always had problems but they eventually get over it." He gave a nervous laugh.
"I am very serious Davis," Aunt Evelyn said as she jabbed her finger into his chest. "If you think I am going to stand by and let your family treat my niece the way you treated that poor Winter's girl, you are sadly mistaken." She turned to the Provost. "I will see you at the next Board Meeting Provost Higgins." She gave him a slight nod and walked down the stairs towards us.
"Evelyn," Mr. Abbot shouted. "Aaron was only joking around. Don't you think you are over reacting?" He followed her down the stairs. The Provost was watching them walk away. He didn't say a word or move at all. Aaron took his time walking down the stairs.
Aunt Evelyn spun around so fast that Mr. Abbot almost ran into her. "Joking," she yelled. "Your son had the audacity to spread a vicious rumor that he slept with Samantha." Her hands were balled into fist. "To answer your question, no I am not over reacting."
"What?" I yelled. I tried to move but Pogue held me. I looked at Aaron but he wouldn't look at me. "You jerk," I shouted.
She turned around and walked towards us. "Sam, I'll take care of it. But right now I want all of you to go straight to the house. I will see you all in a bit." She walked to her car and looked at us.
Pogue pulled me towards my car and his bike. Tyler and Maggie were getting in the Hummer. Caleb and Sarah were backing out of the parking space. I reached into my bag for my keys. My hands were shaking when I pulled them out. Pogue held my hand as he took the keys from me. He opened the passenger door for me and tossed the keys to Reid as he walked by.
"I promise we will explain as soon as we get to the house," he gave me a quick kiss and picked me up and placed me in the car. Reid was already in the driver's seat. Pogue fastened my seatbelt and closed my door.
I watched him get on his bike. I opened my mouth to say something but nothing would come out. I looked around as Reid backed my car out. I took a deep breath as we left the school parking lot. We were a few feet behind Tyler and Pogue was behind us.
I was looking at my hands. That jerk, why start that stupid rumor? "Penny for your thoughts," Reid said quietly. I turned to look at him.
"A nickel for your kiss," I relied with a small smile. I turned in my seat and leaned my head on the headrest.
"A…a…, shit," he said annoyed. I opened my mouth but he shook his head. "Don't tell me, I know what it is," he said frustrated. I looked out the windshield. It started to drizzle. "A dime if you tell me that you love me. See I knew the words." I turned to see him smiling.
I moved my head to the side. Pogue was riding next to us. "Bubba," I said motioning to the driver side window. Reid turned and Pogue was waving his right hand.
"Okay," Reid said loudly. He gave me a quick glance as Pogue took off. "Sorry," he said sheepishly. "Pogue's going to the house." I nodded my head and closed my eyes.
"Tell me about the fight," I asked keeping my eyes closed. I couldn't look at him. My anger at Aaron was growing. I took a deep breath and tried to calm down.
"Aaron came into the locker and went straight to Pogue," he said. I could hear the hesitation in his voice. I opened my eyes and noticed him running his hand through his hair.
I moved my head away from the seat. "What?" I asked concerned. He looked at me and took a deep breath.
"Aaron had your…um…he had…some underwear," he answered. "He a…um…he said they were yours." I was looking at him but I couldn't think of anything to say. Reid was waving his hand in front of my face. I grabbed his hand and held it in both of mine. "Say something Princess," he said as he intertwined our fingers. I looked at our hands.
"I don't even know what to say," I replied as I looked up. I felt a bit numb.
"Let's talk about something else," he suggested. I nodded. "So are you ready to dump Pogue and date the best looking guy in school?"
I scrunched up my nose. "Ewww, Bubba that's gross," I said with a giggle.
"Why?" he asked hurt.
"Because," I said shaking my head. "Caleb is like my brother."
He scoffed and gave my hand a squeeze. "You are so lucky I am driving or else you would be in so much trouble," he said with a chuckle. "You know I'm the only one you really want. You just feel bad for Pogue."
"What about Amber?" I asked tapping his arm.
"She's a cool girl," he replied. I looked at him out of the corner of my eye. "I just got this weird vibe from her today. I was wondering if you noticed anything."
I thought about it. "I did feel something at the party. Gregory felt it too. But I don't know what it was or who it was that was causing us to feel a little off," I answered.
I closed my eyes and held his hand. My mind started to drift. Flashes of Pogue's ascension came to my mind. But then I got a glimpse of Caleb's ascension and when he fought Chase. Something else appeared but it was too fast for me to see. I squeezed Reid's hand. He shook his hand and I opened my eyes. We turned right and headed down the driveway to Caleb's. We were parked behind Tyler. He removed his hand from mine.
"Hey, you okay?" he looked worried. He brushed a strain of hair from my face.
"Yeah," I replied. "Just…you know." I pointed to the cut on his jaw.
"Let's go inside. We'll explain everything," he said opening the driver door. I nodded.
I grabbed my bag and opened my door as Reid was walking around the back of my car. It was raining harder. Reid threw his arm around me and half his body as we walked to the door. He opened the door and took my bag. Sarah came down the stairs carrying towels. She tossed one to Reid and one to me. She looked upset. I didn't say anything as I caught the towel and dried my hair. I took my blazer off and tossed it on the chair. Reid was already stripped to his pants and undershirt. He was taking off his shoes and drying his hair at the same time.
I grabbed my keys from the little table Reid tossed them on. I noticed Pogue walking down the hall. He's was completely wet. I ran towards him and jumped into his arms. "Are you okay?" I asked worried. I pulled away to look at his face. He held me close as he put me down. I was looking at his cut and bruises. I caressed his face gently.
He grabbed my face and kissed me. The kiss was aggressive and rough. It scared me. His heart was beating rapidly. I pulled away and took a step back. "Sorry," he whispered as he pulled me into a hug. "I'm so sorry Lil Bit." He rubbed my back and kissed my cheek. I took a deep breath and wrapped my arms around him.
"What happen?" I whispered. I pulled away to look at him but he pulled me closer to him. "Pogue," I said as I ran my hands up and down his back.
"I just need to hold you for a minute," he said. He was holding my head with one hand and my back with the other. I relaxed in his arms as we held each other.
I could hear movement around us but we stayed holding each other. I could feel his heart beat slowing down. His muscles were slowly relaxing. I turned my head as Sarah and Caleb walked by us. They were both in jeans and long sleeve shirts. Tyler walked by with Maggie. He stopped and kissed my cheek. I gave them a smile as they walked away.
I moved my hands to rest on Pogue's chest. His breathing was slow and steady. His heartbeat was back to normal. He bent down and picked me up. He gave me a quick kiss and headed for the stairs. Reid was coming down the stairs as we headed up. He had a smirk on his face but didn't say anything. I rested my head on Pogue's chest as he walked down the hall to my room. He opened the door and put me down as he used his foot to close the door.
"I'm sorry I scared you. But everything that happened today just came flooding back and I…" he said as he ran his hand through his hair.
"Hey, we don't have to talk about it just yet. Why don't we change out of these wet clothes and head downstairs?" I suggested as I pulled him towards the bathroom. He opened his mouth to say something but I covered his mouth with my finger. "We can talk downstairs," I said handing him a towel. "I'll get you some clothes." He nodded as he took his jacket off.
I walked out of my room and down the hall to Pogue's room. I turned on the light and shook my head. The bed was made up but he had clothes lying on the floor and hanging from a chair. I went to his dresser and pulled out an undershirt and underwear for him. I grabbed a pair of socks as well. I went to the closet and grabbed a pair of jeans. I turned around to get him a shirt. I picked out a shirt for him and grabbed one for myself.
I turned off the light and closed the door. I walked down the hall and entered my room. I heard the shower and put the clothes on the bed. I opened the door. "Baby I have your clothes," I said walking into the bathroom. He stuck his head out and damn he looked good. His hair was dripping wet and water was running down his gorgeous body.
"Thanks babe," he replied. His voice was husky and sexy as hell. "You should probably take a shower." I was biting my lip as I nodded. He laughed softly as he stuck his head back in the shower.
I quickly got undressed and climbed into the shower. He gave me a quick kiss and moved me under the water. It felt good against my skin. I didn't realize how cold I was until the water washed over my body. I quickly washed my body as Pogue washed my hair. I rinsed out my hair and my body as Pogue got out of the shower. I turned the water off. I got smacked in the face with a towel as soon as I stepped out of the shower.
"Hey," I yelled as I moved the towel away from my face. I began to dry off as Pogue laughed and walked out of the bathroom. I smiled and quickly dried up. I grabbed another towel and put my hair up. I walked into my room. He was putting on his shirt. I went to my dresser and pulled out a bra and panties set. I went to the closet and looked for a pair of comfortable jeans.
"Did you bring me two shirts?" Pogue asked walking into my closet. "I only need…" I looked up when he stopped talking. His eyes were looking me up and down. I was standing in my bra and buttoning my jeans. "Wow," he said breathlessly.
"Thanks," I said taking the shirt from him and putting it on. "And thanks for the shirt. I couldn't resist taking it." I smiled and walked out of the closet. I went to the bathroom and put mousse in my hair. I turned on the blow dryer for my hair. Pogue was standing by the doorway.
"We could stay here instead of going downstairs," he said loudly. I smirked and turned off the blow dryer.
"Or we could stay in bed all day tomorrow," I suggested. He smiled. "But for now let's go," I said walking out of the bathroom. I grabbed a pair of socks and put them on. He grabbed my hand and we headed down the hall.
"So you're ditching school tomorrow," he said looking at me from the corner of his eye.
"Well this really hot guy I know," I said smiling. "He got in trouble and suspended." I gave his hand a squeeze. We were walking down the stairs. I could hear everyone in the living room.
"Really," he asked with a big grin. We walked into the living room. I pulled him to one of the big chairs.
"Really," I replied back. I kissed his cheek.
"Okay, we are all together so start explaining," Maggie stated looking at Tyler. He looked at Caleb. Everyone was quiet. It seemed no one wanted to talk about what happen in the locker room. "I'm sure one of you can start the story." She looked at Sarah and shrugged. Sarah looked at me.
I looked at Caleb, but he turned away. When I looked at Tyler he pretended to play with his shirt. Reid had his arms crossed over his chest staring straight ahead. I finally looked at Pogue and I could tell he was debating on how to start.
"Okay, we know about the fight and Aaron saying I slept with him," I started. Pogue's eyes flashed fire before going back to their normal color.
"We were in the locker room when Aaron approached me," Pogue said as he let out a deep breath. "He tossed some underwear at me and said to tell you that he had a lot of fun with you at my party." His hand that was resting on my legs, curled up into a fist. I kept my hands on my lap. "I looked at the underwear and threw them back at him. I told him to fuck off, but he said that… that…"He moved me off his lap and got up.
I sat on the edge of my seat with my hands clasps together. We were watching Pogue pace. He ran his hand through his hair. When he turned around, Maggie gasped. His eyes were black for a few seconds but they eventually changed back to hazel. He stood next to the fireplace.
Reid cleared his throat. "Aaron told Pogue he loved hearing you moan his name," he said with such disgust. "Pogue swung and knocked Aaron on his ass. Ryan and Bordy pushed Pogue up against the lockers and then all hell broke loose." He was on the edge of the couch. "The fight moved out of the locker room and into the gym. The coaches tried to break it up but," he rubbed the back of his neck. "It was bad Baby Girl." I looked at Caleb and Tyler.
"It took all three of us to pull Pogue off of Aaron," Tyler said. I covered my face and shook my head.
"Sam, we know it's not true," Caleb quickly added. "We didn't believe it for a second." I kept my face covered. I could feel and hear the inner rage that was going on inside Pogue.
"Sam," Sarah said my name softly. "Please say something." I could hear the pleading in her voice but I couldn't respond to her. I felt Reid's hand on my leg.
I couldn't look at them. I was trying to contain my anger. Every angry, revengeful, evil and malicious emotion was at the surface. Aaron has done some horrible inexcusable things to me but this was by far the worst. I got up and walked to the hallway. I turned around and looked at Reid and Pogue. I could tell they were holding something back.
"Tell me the rest," I said as calmly as I could. I kept my hands to the side and waited for one of them to answer.
"We told you everything," Caleb answered. He looked around until he got back to me. He looked at Pogue again but he was staring at the floor. His arms were crossed over his chest he was trying to control his anger. Reid was still sitting on the edge of the couch.
Tyler looked at Pogue and Reid. "What are you guys not telling us?" he asked. Reid looked at me then at Tyler. Caleb was looking at Reid with a furious look.
"One of you better start talking," Caleb snapped. Pogue looked up but he wouldn't look at me.
"The underwear was Kate's," Pogue finally answered. "I recognized them from Saturday, when she was naked in my room." Sarah and Maggie were staring at Pogue but they quickly looked at Tyler and Caleb.
I nodded and headed for the stairs. Kate and Aaron were in on this whole damn thing. I should have known she wouldn't stop. I was half way down the hall when I heard footsteps on the stairs. I didn't bother to look, hell they could all follow me for all I cared. I walked in my room and grabbed my shoes. Pogue walked into my room as I finished putting my shoes on. I grabbed my phone and keys just as Tyler and Maggie walked into my room. I ignored all of them and grabbed my jacket.
"Where are you going?" Reid asked as I walked through the door. He was standing in the hallway leaning against the wall.
"I need some air," I responded over my shoulder. I kept walking down the hall and was heading down the stairs.
"Lil Bit," Pogue yelled as I went down the last few steps. Caleb and Sarah were standing by the front door. I stopped when I reached the bottom of the stairs. "I'll go with you," he said grabbing my hand. I looked up at him. The tears I was holding in began to fall.
"No," I said. I took a deep breath to push back the tears.
He took a step back but he still held my hand. "Why?" he asked in a whispered voice. I could hear the hurt. I reached up and caressed his cheek.
"Please let me have some time to myself," I whispered. I bit my lip to keep from crying. I could feel a few tears fall. He cupped my face and wiped the tears away and gently kissed me.
"Be careful," he whispered as he let me go. I nodded and walked to the front door.
I walked past Caleb. I could hear his thoughts. He was shouting in his head but he for once it wasn't me he was angry with. I ran towards my car and jumped in the driver's seat. Aunt Evelyn was pulling into the driveway as I was leaving. But I didn't stop. I knew where I wanted to go but I also knew it was probably a stupid place to go to in this weather.
The closer I got, I knew why everything was happening. I took a deep breath and continued to drive. My heart was beating faster and it felt like it skipped a beat. My windshield wipers were moving as fast as they could go but it was starting to get harder for me to see. The urge to let my power come to the surface was strong. But I was able to hold it off.
I parked my car and turned the ignition off. The rain was pounding against my car. There was a low rumble of thunder but it was far off in the distance. My power surged out. I let it move around me until I felt someone close by. They were standing in the burnt timber of the barn. I opened my door and made my way to the barn. Gramps was right about this place. As evil as some of my family was this place still held power. I could feel it in every step I took.
I didn't see anyone but I knew someone was here. The closer I got the more clear the barn became. I shook my head and laughed. The spell performed was a good one. I walked into the barn and out of the rain. Everything looked as it did the night Chase and Caleb fought, except the roof didn't leak.
"Nice spell big brother," I said. I ran my hand over my hair to dry it.
"Well I didn't want you to get sick little sister," Chase responded as he jumped down from the rafters. "I'm a little surprised the blond slut or your boy toy didn't tag along with you."
I frowned at his descriptions of Reid and Pogue. "Don't Chase," I said in a warning voice. "I have to give you credit for getting Kate on your side. I should have known she knew about everything." I could kick myself for not picking up on it earlier. The way she was acting at the party and questioning us about spider bites that happen almost two months ago. "I'm guessing you told her sometime last week." He tilted his head and smiled.
"Thursday," he said. His eyes were black as onyx. "I figured out that your shield only keeps out the people with power who want to hurt your precious family." He took a step towards me but stopped. He turned his head. There was a loud roar of thunder.
"Scared," I asked with a smirk. He turned to look at me. "Please explain your plan to me." I had my hands in my jacket pocket. I moved my finger over my phone and used to dial Caleb's number. I took my jacket off. I looked around and found a spot for my jacket. As I laid it down, I took my phone out and put it on the beam. I hope Caleb can hear the conversation. "You obviously wanted me to break up with Pogue but I'm confused on the rest of your plan." It wasn't cold in the barn but I still hugged myself for warmth.
He turned away from me for a few seconds and then turned to face me. "Yeah Kate didn't follow my plan the way I wanted," he said sounding annoyed. "But yes I wanted you to break up with Pogue, but who would have thought that jealous bastard could change." He shook his head and chuckled. "I mean he didn't bat an eye when Aaron threw those panties at him." He moved a little to the right. I stayed where I was at and held my ground. "He never once thought that you would cheat on him. I have to give you credit for changing him." He clapped and laughed.
"You actually thought we would break up and I would feel betrayed by my brothers and Pogue," I laughed but it was a sarcastic laugh. "Even if we did break up, I would never come to you," I hissed. "You tried to kill my family," I shouted as I threw an energy ball at him. I knew he would deflect it but the anger in me was getting harder to control.
"Now now, little sister," he said angrily. He threw an energy ball at me. I smirked and caught it. He looked pissed which made me laugh.
I made the energy ball bigger then made it disappear. He threw energy lines at me but I was able to shield myself. He kept throwing them at me at different directions. He tried to lift my shield and throw me but I blocked him. The rain was pounding on the roof of the barn. He threw a few energy blasts at my shield before relaxing against the wall.
"I take it we are done being nice," I said throwing a pitchfork at him. He stopped it right before it hit him.
"You could have poked my eye out with this," he said throwing the pitchfork at me. It bounced off my shield and hit the wall next to me.
I removed my shield. "Are you done?" I asked putting my hands on my hips. He laughed and shook his head.
"You still think you can change me," he took a step back and turned around. "Why do you bother?" he asked with his back to me. He was looking out the window.
"You're my brother Chase," I said in a frustrated voice. "That's why you're pissed off at Kate. She was supposed to get a random guy to fight with Pogue." I took a deep breath. "You knew it was Aaron that left those bruises on my arm." I put my head down.
I took a deep breath and read his mind. He was thinking about Aaron and how he wanted to kill him for laying a hand on me. He was thinking of the conversation he had with Kate this afternoon. She told him about Aaron pushing me up against the locker. He did feel happy after he left Nicky's earlier.
"She actually thought I would be happy that Aaron was harassing you. Pogue should have killed him," he said angrily. "But he couldn't do it." I heard something break but I didn't move.
He was regretting something but I couldn't see what it was…it was blurry…he was pushing it out of his mind. I took a deep breath and pushed a little further into his mind. He was trying to block a memory but he slipped. He used a spell from the Putnam book and summoned someone. Laura.
"How could you?" I shouted. I threw an energy ball at him. It hit him in the back of the head. It wasn't strong but it was strong enough to hurt.
"Damn it Sam," he yelled as he turned around. "What the hell are you doing?" He took a step towards me.
"Don't come near me," I shouted. "You brought back Laura. Why Chase?" I was so angry. I could feel my power surging around me. "She wants me dead, did you know that?" I yelled. "Or is that what you want too?" He flinched at my last comment.
"Sam," Caleb yelled as he ran through the barn door. He looked around and stopped when he saw Chase. "You son of bitch, stay away from my sister." Caleb's eyes flashed fire before turning black. Reid and Tyler ran through the door with their eyes black. They each threw an energy blast at Chase. He blocked them and scoffed at them.
"Looks like our time together has come to an end," Chase said gesturing to the guys. "All we're missing is the boyfriend." His eyes flashed fire and he was standing on the rafter.
"I'm right here," Pogue said angrily. He stood next to me. "Stay away from my girlfriend." He threw his arm out in front of me.
"You all seem to forget," Chase shouted making the barn shake. "Sam is my sister. She will never turn her back on me." He walked along the rafter looking down on us. He stopped walking when he was almost above me. "I wanted the curse lifted. I didn't think the whole thing through," he said. A look of remorse crossed his face.
He jumped down from the rafter. He was directly in front of me. A scared look crossed his face but it was quickly gone. It was almost as if I imagined it. The guys were standing completely still. I walked around Pogue's arm. My power and anger were mirroring each other.
"Damn it Chase, release them," I snapped at him. "You don't get to pick the moments to act like my brother." Chase went flying into a post. He slumped to the ground. Pogue wrapped his arms around me but quickly pulled away.
"Ouch," he hissed. "Babe, pull back your power." I could see him rubbing his arms.
"Looks like Baby Girl knocked you on your ass," Reid gloated. "Maybe you should stay down." Chase got up smiling. He dusted himself off.
"You know you're wrong," Tyler said looking at Chase. "She's my sister too."
Caleb was standing next to Tyler. "Our sister doesn't give up on us either. The more you push her to choose, the faster you will lose her," Caleb said looking at me. Chase took a step towards us.
"Well little sister," Chase said looking at me. His eyes flashed fire before going back to black. "You are in good hands." He pointed to the guys. I quickly read his mind.
"Why did you erase Kate's memory?" I shouted. "You told her about us and then erased it from her mind." He took a step back. His eyes were flashing fire. "I know you care Chase." I took a step forward. "That's why you broke Aaron's hand at Nicky's earlier." He looked angry.
"He never should have touched you!" he shouted. "Kate took it upon herself to get back at you. I wanted to kill her when she told me." I took another step forward. His eyes changed to their normal color. "They were supposed to protect you." He lowered his head.
I jumped in front of him and threw my arms out. The guys were about to use on him. "No!" I yelled. I could see the confusion on their faces. The barn shook and a beam fell, landing a few feet behind the guys.
Chase spun me around to face him. "Why do you keep trying?" he asked in a small voice. I could see the battle that was raging inside him. "I'm not good." A few tears fell down his cheek. I grabbed his face.
"Your my brother…I love you," I said crying. "Please…fight it… don't… don't leave… me." My body was aching from the sobs that pounded through my body. He held my wrists.
He kissed my forehead. "I love you Samantha," he whispered. Help me. I heard him faintly say in his mind. A vision of him being thrown into a rock crossed his mind. He pushed me away. I staggered backwards. He eyes were as black as coals. "Is there any chance of you performing the splitting spell?" He disappeared as six energy balls were thrown at him.
"Asshole," Reid shouted. "What the hell took you guys so long?" he asked angrily as he turned to face Liam and Gregory.
Pogue approached me with his hands raised. I ran into his arms and buried my face in his chest. He wrapped his arms around me and stroked my hair. "It's okay babe," he whispered. I held on to him as I cried. I could hear movement around us.
"Did he hurt Sam?" Liam asked. I could hear the concern in his voice.
"No," Tyler answered. He sounded frustrated.
I stopped crying but I was still trying to catch my breath.
"As much as he would like to hurt us," Caleb said letting out a frustrated breath. "I got the feeling that he would never intentional hurt Sam." Something broke causing a loud noise. It made me jump.
"Damn it Reid," Pogue growled. "Your scaring Lil Bit." He rubbed my back.
"What the fuck are you talking about Caleb?" Reid yelled. "That asshole attacked her and Baby Boy causing Princess to shut down, almost as if she was in a coma."
"Stop it," I said. My voice sounded weak. I barely heard myself.
"Did you hear their conversation at all?" Caleb yelled. "In his own warped way, he loves her." There was a cracking sound.
"What the hell?" Reid shouted. "Who the hell do you think you are?" Liam used on Reid. I could feel his power.
"Let it go Reid," Caleb shouted. He put a hand on Reid's shoulder.
"Stop it," I said a little louder. I pulled away from Pogue but he kept an arm around my waist.
"Walk away Reid," Tyler said grabbing his arm. But Reid threw Caleb and Tyler's hands off of him.
"It's not about you," Liam shouted. He was standing in front of Reid. "Think about her feelings, instead of your own." Reid pushed Liam. Gregory and Tyler were trying to pull them apart.
"Stop it," I yelled. I threw a shield between Reid and Liam. All four guys took a few steps back. They turned to look at me. I dropped the shield and my eyes went back to their normal color.
"Sorry Sam," Liam mumbled. Reid looked at him and scoffed.
"Knock it off Reid," Caleb growled. Reid got in Caleb's face so fast, he looked like a blur.
"Did you forget that asshole tried to kill you?" Reid shouted furiously. Caleb pushed Reid away.
"I haven't forgotten a damn thing. But this isn't about us," Caleb yelled. "It's about Sam." He ran his hand down his face. "Look at her." He grabbed Reid and turned him to face me. "Look at what this doing to her." He had one hand on the back of Reid's shirt and the other on his chest. "As much as I hate Chase," he hissed. "I love her more." He shoved Reid away.
"Princess," Reid said in a small voice. He ran his hand through his hair. He took a step towards me but I backed away.
"I can't give up on him," I spit out. I started to shake. Pogue pulled me close to him. "I know what he's done." I wiped away a few tears that fell. "Trust me, I will never forget or live it down." Reid winced. "But I know the brother I met is inside somewhere. The dark magic he's been using hasn't consumed him yet."
"But Princess, you can't honestly think that he can change," Reid was standing in front of me. He caressed my cheek.
I grabbed his hand and held it. "Are you asking me to give up on him?" I asked. I could hear the pain in my voice.
"He's not worth it Sam," Reid said in a calm voice. I knew he was struggling to keep his anger in check. He was looking at me and pleading with me to listen to him. I could see it in his eyes. "He doesn't realize how far he has gone by using." He took a deep breath. "He's addicted to the power. He can't stop using for the simplest things."
"Are you sure you're not talking about yourself?" Gregory asked irritated. Reid flipped him off.
I tugged on his hand. "Reid, you were the same way. Using for the simplest things," I pointed out. "I never gave up on you." He pulled his hand away.
"Don't compare me to that asshole," he snapped. Tyler took a step towards him but Caleb held him back. I could feel Pogue's anger.
"Reid, I'm sorry, I never meant to compare you to him," I replied. I took a deep breath. "All I'm asking from all of you is…I know you don't care for Chase, but he's a part of me. If you guys can't support me on this, I completely understand." I looked at them all including Gregory and Liam.
"Sam, I can't say I completely understand why you have to do to this," Tyler said as he walked over to me. "But I will try my best to support you." He gave me a hug. "But if he tries to hurt you, I will kill him." I looked at him. I could see it in his eyes that he was serious.
"I won't let that happen," I said nervously, "to any of you." I took a deep breath. "I need to show you guys something," I said pulling away from him. I let them see the memory I had of Chase hitting a rock.
"What does it mean?" Liam asked looking around at all of us.
"I don't know but I intended to find out," I answered. Pogue leaned down and kissed the top of my head.
"So you're saying that Chase was being manipulated," Reid scoffed. He threw his hands in the air and turned around. "Caleb, don't worry you can trust Chase, he was being manipulate into making you will your power away."
"That's not what I'm saying Bubba," I snapped. He ignored me and turned to Tyler.
"It's okay Baby Boy, he only attacked you because someone was forcing him," Reid said sarcastically patting Tyler on the back. He pushed Reid away from him. Reid just brushed it off.
"Shut up Reid," Liam snarled. "Your being even more obnoxious than usual and that is saying a lot." He was leaning against the wall.
"Enough," I complained.
"Quick being a dick Reid," Tyler shouted. He ran his hand through his hair.
"Blondie wouldn't know how to shut his mouth if his life depended on it," Gregory said chuckling. Reid gave him a dirty look.
"Why can't you listen to what Lil Bit is saying?" Pogue asked. "Damn it Reid, don't you think that this is hard for all of us?" He took a step towards Reid.
"Stop it," I yelled. Caleb stopped Pogue from going near Reid.
"Fuck you," Reid said to Liam as his eyes flashed fire before going back to blue. "And you too." He pointed to Gregory. "You saw Chase for what," he shrugged, "two seconds. That asshole uses people." He looked at Tyler. "You claim Baby Girl is your sister," he turned to Caleb. "You said the same thing." He pointed to both of them. "Fucking act like her brothers and protect her from Chase." His eyes flashed fire.
"Stop it Reid," I yelled. He looked at me with black eyes. He pushed Pogue against the wall.
"You are the one person I completely trust with all my heart to protect her. Gorman and Mr. Melina told us to protect her at all cost. They made us promise," Reid shouted. He was breathing hard. "And here you are just letting her get closer to that son of a bitch."
After that everyone was yelling and trying to separate Reid and Pogue. Gregory was holding on to Liam. I yelled for everyone to stop but no one could hear me. I went to cover my face but instead energy lines shot out of my hands. I tried to pull my power back but it just intensified.
"ENOUGH!" I screamed. The barn shook as well as the ground. The guys tried to find their balance. Everyone turned to look at me. I squeezed my hands and the shaking stopped. "I'm not asking anyone to help me when it comes to Chase." I let out a frustrated breath. I walked to the barn door. I needed air.
"Why can't you see that he is evil and will never change?" Reid yelled as I walked by him. He grabbed my arm and spun me around.
"That's what Caleb said about you, remember," I said through clenched teeth. I looked into his blue eyes. "Do you want me to turn my back on you because of your carelessness?" He took a step back but didn't let go of me.
"Princess, I'm not the one who killed an innocent person," he replied. I tried to pull my arm away from him but he held on tight. "As your protector I won't allow you near him." He pulled me towards him.
I smirked at him and used. He flew a couple of feet back. "Don't you think I know that," I shouted. Pogue helped Reid up. "I'm not stupid or naïve. I know what my brother is and I know what he's done." I ran my hand down my face. "But no matter what, he is still my brother. I will do anything and everything I can to save him." Caleb and Tyler were standing a few feet from Reid with their arms crossed over their chests.
"You can't be fucking serious," Reid yelled at me. He took a step towards me but Pogue grabbed his arm.
"I'm not asking or expecting anyone's approval or help. I need some air," I spit out. "Don't even think of following me," I yelled over my shoulder.
"It's still raining," Caleb yelled.
"I don't care," I shouted as I walked out of the barn. The rain felt good against my face. My shoes on the other hand were muddy.
I could hear them arguing but I didn't care. I know Chase isn't innocent. But there is still some good in him. I have to try and save him. I looked up at the sky as the rain drops pelted my face. I hugged myself to try and give myself some kind of warmth. My teeth started to chatter. I felt a dark power but I wasn't quick enough to shield myself. A hand covered my mouth but not before I screamed.
"SAM!" I could hear everyone yell my name.
I struggled to break the hold on me. I used but it felt like something was blocking me. The person spun us around. The guys were a few feet away from me and the person holding me. I kicked my legs and my arms but I couldn't get away. I looked at six pair of black eyes. If I didn't know them, I would be scared.
"Quit moving or I will snap your neck," said a man's raspy voice in my ear. I felt his lips on my skin. I turned away but he pulled my face towards him. He was at least six two or six three. He looked about the same age as Gregory. His dark jacket matched his onyx eyes. His smirk looked evil. Water drops were falling from his spikey hair. He looked at the guys. "Don't even think about helping her."
"Devin," Liam and Gregory shouted.
"Who the hell is Devin?" Reid yelled. He was looking at Gregory and Liam.
Tyler and Caleb were looking at me. Their eyes flashed fire before going back to black. They were holding Pogue back. His eyes flashed fire before turning black.
"A cousin of ours," Liam answered.
"From a different Covenant," Gregory added.
"But how is that even possible," Liam said in disbelief. "We saw you die."
"My poor pathetic cousins," Devin laughed. "It was all an illusion." The rain slowed to a sprinkle. He removed his hand from my mouth and ran it slowly down my side. "I can see why you love her," he said. "I bet she tastes just as good as she looks." He ran his hand down my thigh and kissed my neck. I struggled to get away from him but he held me tight.
"Don't touch her!" Pogue yelled. He was struggling against Caleb and Tyler. "I'll kill you!"
"Princess," Reid shouted. I looked in his direction. He was moving his hand. I could see he was forming an energy ball. "I'm sorry for being an ass earlier." I kept watching his hand. Then it finally clicked.
"Don't worry Pogue, what a stupid name, I'll be gentle with her," he snickered. "What's the name you use…Lil Bit, that's it," Devin chuckled. He moved his hand over my stomach.
I ignored him and concentrated on the thing that was blocking me. Gregory was holding on to Liam. I could feel the atmosphere change. Laura was coming. I concentrated harder on finding a hole on the shield. I hated to admit it but I was impressed that he was able to block me.
"Let her go Devin," Gregory demanded. "You're angry with us, not Sam." He took a step towards us but was thrown back. He landed on his ass.
"Don't come near me or my girl," Devin snapped.
He kissed my neck and I found the break in the shield I was looking for. I quickly pulled my power to the surface. Caleb whispered something to Pogue. They looked at me. I turned quickly in Devin's arms and used on him. I sent him flying. Reid and Gregory were quickly by my side.
"I'm not your girl," I shouted. I wiped at my neck. Devin was getting up when Reid and Gregory used on him. He landed on his ass again.
"That's for putting your hands on my girl," Reid yelled. I could feel a crackle in the air.
I grabbed Reid and Gregory's hands and pulled them back towards Pogue and the guys. "She's coming," I said in a warning voice. I felt Pogue wrap his arms around my waist. Devin was getting up when a loud explosion caused the ground to shake.
"What the fuck was that?" Reid shouted. As the ground shook it moved him away from us.
Laura appeared next to Devin. She sent an energy line towards Reid. "No!" I yelled. I blocked the line and sent one of my own. They dived out of the way.
"I seemed to have underestimated you Sam," she growled as she got up. Devin took a step towards us but she grabbed his arm. "I think you've humiliated yourself enough for one day." He shook her hand off.
"This isn't over," Devin snarled. He looked me up and down as he blew a kiss.
Six energy blasts were thrown at him. Laura and Devin disappeared and I threw a shield around the seven of us. I could feel her close but I couldn't pin point where she would appear. I looked around and noticed Devin appearing behind us. He threw energy lines at us but they couldn't get past my shield. I closed my eyes and threw an energy blast to my right. Laura moved to the left as she appeared. The blast missed her by inches.
"Nice try bitch," she said laughing. "Devin, let's go." He appeared next to her.
"See you soon honey," he laughed. Laura grabbed his arm.
I stepped out of the shield. "Non redeunt claudere fenestram, quae tuum reditum," I said raising my hand. They disappeared into the flames that surrounded them. I threw a shield around the flames and closed my hand, making the flames disappear. The shield around the guys disappeared too.
Pogue pulled me into his arms. "Was that the spell to keep her away?" I nodded.
"I don't know how long it will last," I answered pulling away from him.
"Great, just fucking great," Reid yelled. "Between Chase and your asshole cousin," he said pointing at Liam and Gregory, "and that stupid bitch, we could be attacked at any moment."
"That's not true," Tyler said moving next to me. He squeezed my shoulder.
"I agree," Caleb said. He was standing next to me and gave my hand a squeeze.
"What the hell are you talking about?" Reid asked pushing Caleb and Tyler out of the way. He pulled me into a hug. Pogue growled but didn't pull me back.
"You really are a blond," Gregory said sounding bored. "Being a protector makes you a target. Your power increases when you are defending your life force."
"So?" Reid shrugged. He was rubbing my back.
"You are at your strongest when you are defending me," I continued where Gregory left off. "We are all at our weakest when we ascend." I looked at him and waited.
"Five," Caleb said. He ran his hand down his face.
"Four," Tyler said as he ran his fingers through his hair.
"Three," Pogue said before he smacked Reid on the back of the head.
"Two," Liam was laughing.
"One," Gregory said as he pushed Reid's head.
"Light bulb," I announced as I pulled away to see Reid's eyes get big.
"My ascension," he mumbled.
