New Beginnings

Chapter 29

Everything was quiet; as the last few pieces of glass tumbled to the floor- no, make that the roof of the car. A freezing blast of wind whistled through the new openings and she shivered. The shield charm had protected her well, but she could not say the same for the poor car. She cancelled the spell and proceeded to crawl out of the scrap metal, barely noticing the glittering razor sharp danger embedding itself deeply in her palms, tearing up her knees. One piece of the windshield in particular scraped her cheek as she pulled herself out. Her brain was fuzzy as she surveyed the damage. Uncomprehending. Suddenly, a bright white light was blinding her, she held up a bloodied hand to shield her eyes and realized it was just the sun peeking through the clouds, a rare occurrence. A sleek black car turned the bend and a flash of pale skin and blond hair.

"Hermione!? Alice said she saw... How are you alive?" Carlisle's frantic voice in her ear broke through her daze.

"You're..." Hermione faltered, beautiful, her mind supplied. His marble skin seemed to be comprised of diamonds, glittering and sparkling in the sunlight. "You shouldn't be in the sun, what if someone drives by?" He ignored her warning and was looking into her eyes carefully, scanning over her body, checking her vitals.

"Your hands and knees." It wasn't a question, but was obviously a prompt.

"When I crawled out. Carlisle, really, I'm fine." She protested.

"Alice saw you crash, I'd hoped to reach you before that happened... She said it was awful, how on earth are you so lightly injured?" Her eyebrows scrunched, how would she explain this one?

"Ehm, well... you see..." She murmured, jumping violently when the phone in her pocket began to vibrate and ring. Saved by the bell... "Excuse me..."

"'Mione? Look, I'm really sorry for snapping on you like that earlier. I know I haven't been around much, and Teddy should be my responsibility and-"

"Harry-"

"Just a minute, I need to say this 'Mione, I'm going to ask to work less at the office, Merlin knows they owe me, I am the bloody Saviour-"

"Harry-" Hermione interrupted, knowing very well that Carlisle could hear every word. She could feel his eyes on her.

"I've just not been able to deal with it all, and really Hermione, I'm sorry you've been at the brunt of it."

"I... Thank you Harry, we'll have to talk about it later, there was an... accident."

"Accident?!" His voice was suddenly sterner. "What kind of accident? Are you okay? Where are you?"

"I'm fine. A very minor car accident between Port Angeles and Seattle. Carlisle Cullen showed up almost immediately."

"Oh. He's there with you?"

"And has a few questions." In response he sighed explosively.

"Alright. Well... use your best judgement Hermione, you're usually right. But there's no use breaking the Statute for nothing."

"I know."

"I'll be there in a few minutes, if you'd like."

"No, stay."

"Right. See you soon?"

"Yes. Bye." He didn't answer, just hung up.
