CHAPTER 29
Prom
"Hello Miss Cullen," Chris had opened the door and he looked haggard. "Your aunt, or so she calls herself your aunt has left your things in the room upstairs for you."
I passed through the front door and I could hear shouting coming from upstairs, my eyes found Chris's grey ones. "Alice is like my …adoptive aunt. Is everything ok?"
"Hopefully Miss Cullen, they have been at it for thirty minutes straight," he sighed.
"What's happened?"
"Gemma is moving out, not soon but she has bought some land and plans to build a house."
"I thought Lottie would have been happy about that?"
"She was, Gemma has taken it the wrong way," Chris rolled his eyes and shut the door. "Your other friends are here, they are in the living room if you would like to wait. Your aunt said she was coming back with your other aunt to do all of your hair and make-up."
I nodded. "It will get better," I gave Chris a reassuring smile.
"I do hope so, the house has been full of tension since Miss Willets did her little flit," I could feel my face redden. "Not to worry Miss Cullen, I know how persuasive she can be," the corner of his mouth turned up into a half smile. He shut the door and he left to go into the kitchen and I heard him talk to himself. "I did a lot worse when I was her age, she only went to New York," he sighed.
I wandered into the living room to find Adeline, Kirsty and Megan sitting in silence. "Hey," I smiled. They all smiled back, all still in their hockey clothes. "Why are you guys not showered yet?"
"We didn't want to interrupt," Megan's eyes darted to the ceiling.
"Prom is in less than three hours, we need to all get a move on and we need to be ready for Alice and Rose," I looked at the time. I knew the boys were coming for us at seven pm. I about turned and went upstairs. I could hear Lottie and Gemma shouting at each other and over each other in Gemma's room.
"Look, I have apologised so many times for fucking off like that, what more can I do Gemma? And I certainly wasn't kicking you out of the house; I don't know what gave you that impression!"
"You put us all through hell Charlotte. You have no idea what you did to those guys of yours but it affected all of them, the whole pack. Remember, they can read each other's thoughts, feel each other's pain?"
"I know that, I feel awful for that-"
"And you realise that the three of us, me, Steven and Clynt had taken our SAT's this morning, before the game, I told you I wasn't coming today, yet you still expected me to be there, don't you think you have put us all through enough and yet you still expect my support?"
"Steven and Clynt were there. I …I just wanted you there Gemma, you're my sister. "
"Only through marriage."
I sucked in a breath; that was a bit harsh. "You don't mean that," Lottie whispered.
"I do. We are equal partners in the business, I saw to that, and you shouted at me for it and I didn't deserve it, you left me, remember? I've put up with your crap for years and always supported you but I'm done now. We are both fine finically, we don't really need each other, do we?" Gemma spat. I could hear the venom in her voice.
I was expecting a roar from Lottie but nothing came. "Ok," she said quietly. "Just so you know, there isn't any rush in leaving."
"Whatever."
I knocked on the door and Lottie opened it and I could see she was trying really hard not to cry. "Hey, sorry Ness, you guys go ahead and start getting showered and ready, just use whatever rooms you want." She ran past me and down into her bedroom, her bedroom door slamming.
I was mad. I took Lottie's empty space as Gemma was staring out of the window, the door shutting and she turned, surprised to still see me there. "What do you want?" she snarled.
"Hang on, don't start with me, I have already apologised and so has Lottie for doing what we did so I am not going to grovel anymore, we have been punished for it, you don't need to keep punishing her!"
"And what's got to do with you how I feel?"
"The wolves may be able to read each other's mind but we can still feel your pain too. You didn't have to say that to her, that was an awful thing to say."
Gemma's face softened. "I know, I only said it for effect."
"Then you need to tell her that, she might have caused all these problems but she is paying for it, believe me she is paying for it. You could have made her worse. She was pleased you were moving on with Seth, so Chris tells me and you have been looking for an argument."
"We have barely spoken since she came back, what am I meant to do?"
"It's not about you though Gemma, you made your feelings perfectly clear two weeks ago when you slapped her. Everyone she loves has left her and you have basically done the same."
"So you're saying I shouldn't start my life with Seth?" Gemma folded her arms.
"No, that is not what I am saying, but telling her she is your sister by marriage only is like me saying to her, and lying by the way, that Jacob wanted her gone, that I should have let Felix bite her. I have said some truly awful things through anger and I felt what she is feeling and it is not good. I did that to her and now you have too. You do realise she has abandonment issues and you are just fuelling that!"
"And how would you know? Has she actually said that to you because I don't think she would!"
"Because I felt it through her thoughts. Because I felt the pain and despair she is feeling, her Dad died, her Mom basically left her before she died, your father, Keith, Emmett and now you."
"I am not as close to her as I once was."
"That doesn't matter, you are still her sister. Whether it is through marriage or not! Has it ever crossed your brain, as it has only crossed mine very recently, that because she hasn't had boundaries, because people have left her that she crosses the line, that she pushes buttons?"
I left her with that thought as I need to get myself sorted for this damn prom; I didn't even want to go now. I went down to the end room and I could hear Lottie sobbing. All I wanted to do was to go in and just hold her but something stopped me, something in the way she had been weird with contact; had stopped me. It was like she was retreating into herself.
I stepped back and rushed down the stairs to tell the other three to take a room and to start getting ready. Alice and Rose would be here shortly and they wouldn't be impressed if we hadn't done our part. I ran back upstairs and I could hear the shower going in Lottie's en-suite so I knew she was still at least going tonight.
I went into the room next to hers and I got into the shower and did my thing. I was sad at the fact the Jacob was not taking me tonight, to my first prom but we would have others. I hoped so; I hated not being able to speak to him, but at the same token I deserved it. I was out the shower, not wasting much time as I brushed out my wet hair then drying it as much as I could with the towel, then using a hairdryer to do the rest. There was a knock at my door and Alice let herself in. "Well, I'm glad your hair is at least dry," she rolled her eyes.
"Sorry, we were a little late."
Alice shook a dainty little hand at me. "I know, I saw," she clasped her hands. "Have you seen your dress?" I shook my head and Alice frowned. "Really?" she peered over to the unopened white dress bag which contained my outfit for this evening. "You will love it," she grinned wickedly. "But seeing as you can't be bothered to see what beautiful piece is inside this bag, you will have to wait until it is on, now sit!" she pointed to the chair at the dresser and got to work.
I looked in the mirror at Alice's creation and I was in awe. I looked so pretty. My hair had been styled in a simple chignon with a beehive effect with a left side parting and a section of hair draped over my forehead, tucked behind my right ear creating a smooth effect, with tendrils of curls falling loose. I wore my diamond necklace that Rose had given me along with diamond drop earrings. I wore nude heeled shoes with a red sole which made my legs look long as the bottom part of my dress was a little transparent , and on my right wrist I wore the charm bracelet that Jacob gave me from Tiffany's, at least I would have part of him with me tonight, and of course my engagement ring.
But the dress … Alice had pulled out all the stops, was an Oscar de la Renta creation. It was full length, pale blush pink illusion tulle that was embroidered with pale pink, three dimensional floral designs that were highlighted with glass beads and sequins and it looked like diamonds had been poured all over me. Above the straight bust sat a pale mesh material that was sleeveless but also with the three dimensional floral designs and the back of the dress where the mesh buttoned at the top but had an oval space between the material. The gathering of flowers trailed off to the bottom where it had netting to flare out the dress a little and this was where it was transparent. Alice teamed this dress with a solid, slim silver belt at my waist. My makeup was minimal; my long lashes were like waves over my shiny chocolate eyes, cheeks shimmering and pale pink, creamy eye shadow and I wore a shiny pale gloss on my lips. But it was the detail in my eye make up which was stunning, Alice had put little floral butterflies around the edges of my eyeshadow, the wings were three dimensional like my dress. Alice was truly an artist. And I sensed that Oscar de la Renta was going to be a theme tonight judging by her smile. When I walked, I looked like I was floating through water. I looked down at the three dimensional flowers and they all moved individually, I touched one and it felt like satin running through my hands.
I had thanked her when she came back in to zip me up. She had purposely left us to go downstairs one by one as I knew the boys were here to pick us up; I spotted a black stretch limo outside and I could hear and feel the excitement from them down in the living room. I knew Adeline, Kirsty and Megan were already downstairs judging by the wolf whistles they all received. I took a deep breath, taking my silver clutch with my essentials and left the room. "I am not wearing my make up like this Rose!" I heard Lottie protest inside her room.
"You are and you will, do as you're told," Rose said firmly. "It goes with the dress."
"It doesn't look like me," she complained.
"Well you have perfected your mask, why not make it look like one," Rose said bluntly and there was no come back from Lottie. "Don't think I don't know what you are doing, I am the master of that."
I didn't want to eavesdrop; Rose would know I was there, I found myself at the top of the stairs and I floated down. I heard voices from the living room; I opened the door to find everyone staring, and Clynt was the first to meet me. "Wow honey, you look simply amazing." He took my hand, lifting it up so I would twirl underneath him. "I have something for you."
I took him in, he was wearing a black suit, white shirt and at his neck was a broach with two plaited pieces of leather falling from them. He wore a jet black cowboy hat and teamed it with brown cowboy boots. He looked extremely stylish and his muscles bulged from beneath his suit. "You scrub up well yourself," I beamed.
"Not my first time," he winked. He pulled a box that was sitting on the edge of the white sofa held a clear box with my corsage inside. He opened it to show me three pale pink roses, bound together with silver ribbon with their stalks on show; he slipped this onto my left wrist and secured it together. "Alice told me what your dress looked like." I smiled down at it and I could feel tears tripping me. It should be Jacob doing this with me and my heart fluttered thinking of him and how he was not here. I felt fingers lift my chin and I found Clynt's pale blue eyes. "Mon Cherie, now is not the time to be sad. I know I am not your 'ideal' prom date and I know that you would rather your fiancé took you tonight. But at least you get down with the gays!" he smiled was broad, showing me his teeth and all I could do was laugh. "There we go," he bent down to kiss me on the cheek. "I'll look after you tonight," he promised.
I linked my arm through his and joined the rest of the party. Adeline was with Embry who was rocking a tux, but also gave me a sympathetic nod. Adeline was a vision of beauty; her hair was parted in the centre and her hair styled into a low bun, her deep blue dress was slim fitting at her bust, showing off her assets through a ripped netted scalloped neck line which was v shape front and back. Over the deep blue dress was even darker blue patterns, her arms encased in three quarter length sheer dark blue sleeves and underneath her waist the gown tiered off into different sections but gathered beautifully at the back; she looked like an elegant flamenco dancer. On her wrist was a bright white flowers to contrast against her dress and Embry wore a small button hole to match them. Seth was standing, in a similar tux to Embry, his hair was messy but stylish. They were standing with Graham was also in a black tux, his cuffs twinkling with links and he wore a black silk tie; he was holding onto a box for Lottie. I smiled at Adeline and I gave her a thumbs up making her blush.
I saw Kirsty and she was a vivid picture of red. Her dress was brilliant red and had a sheer floral overlay that fitted her lovely silhouette, showing off every curve. I could tell the top half was corseted, and the skirt had a petticoat underneath to flare out the dress, making it look like it was from the fifties, sitting at her knees. She also had a lace meshing rising up from her sweetheart neckline which leads into capped off sleeves. Kevin, who was also in a tux stood like a mountain against her but the red of her dress brought out the tone of her skin. She wore shoes with a slight platform which made her legs look longer than what they were. She had small gold bangles jostling her left arm and a black coloured corsage on her right. I smiled at her and she smiled back. Her hair, although it was short, was in a sleek style and she wore an old comb on the heavier parted side that flared out like a feather. I walked over to her leaving Clynt with the boys and Adeline. "You look stunning Kirsty."
"So do you Nessie! Your aunt Alice has loaned me the comb," she touched it gently with her fingers.
Alice appeared from nowhere. "I told you, you could keep it," Alice smiled making Kirsty jump. She was in her element, getting to dress people. She had picked our dresses and although Kirsty gave her eighty dollars which she had saved for the dress from her job, I knew that Alice had spent eight times that on this designer dress. Adeline's dress was actually one of Rose's and with a few alterations, fitted her really well. Alice had taken it upon herself to ensure everyone was fitted out for this occasion. I looked down at my neckline and I could see how well my cleavage was sitting; she also did this for someone else, to show him what he was missing.
"I don't know if I can, I know that this isn't your run of the mill hair accessory," Kirsty laughed uncomfortably.
"I won't hear it," Alice shooed her away as she went over to speak with Seth. "I hope you're ready," she said mischievously.
I went over to find Megan and Steven and I was blown away; Megan was in low black pants that was very fitted at the waist but ended up into a wide leg. She wore a tight fitting white shirt with three quarter length sleeves with large cuffs and collar. She also wore a peacock coloured waistcoat that brought out the blue of her eyes. She had a button hole flower in her top right breast pocket of the waist coat. I knew there was no way she would wear a dress. "Megan, you look awesome!"
"I know," she said with the air of a joke around her. Her hair was in a Mohican but she was wearing make-up, and I clocked something shiny by the floor which caused me to look down. "I know, your aunt was determined to make me wear something shiny," she looked down too and lifted up her feet which were converse the same colour as her waistcoat but covered in sequins. I had to laugh. "And Rose practically pinned me down to put some make up on but I have to admit I don't look that bad."
"Of course you don't sweetie, but I look hot!" Steven poked her in the side and I took him in; he was wearing full Scottish attire; he was in a kilt. "Blackwatch tartan." I looked at the colours and it was dark greens and blues. Megan and Steven made a good combination. He was wearing a thistle in his breast pocket. "I love the sporran!" he jingled it. "I have my phone and all sorts in there." He patted the grey fur part. I took him in; even his socks and the way the shoes were tied were down to a tee.
"You are going to be roasting in the jacket," I said.
"I'll take it off once we get hot and sweaty. I bet no one else is one."
"It suits you Steven," I said. "I love it actually."
"Why thank you, you look alright," he smirked. "Still not as hot as me!"
We all laughed and he reached over to my ear. "You look lovely; he doesn't know what he is missing."
My smile faded a little but when Steven straightened up it was back on. No tears tonight. The door opened and in came Gemma. I could literally hear Seth's mouth hit the floor before I could see him. She was beautiful. Her hair was curly and soft, her bright red lips stood out from her olive face with smoky eye make-up. Her dress, also from Oscar, chocolate in colour, bringing out the tones of her skin and strapless, but corseted with a sweetheart neckline and embellished with swirls of gold dipped peacock feathers that had been cut into petals and arranged into meandering vines down her right hand side. Gold beads and crystal loch rosens highlighted the embroidery detail. The front of the hem stopped just below her knees but the back trailed slightly behind her, covering the backs of her legs. "Gemma," Seth simply breathed. He was up and at her side, slipping on a white flowered corsage on her wrist. She wore only diamond earrings and no other jewellery.
I smiled at her and she actually smiled back so I took the chance, walking over to her. "You look lovely."
"Thank you, I thought about what you said. Lottie wouldn't answer her door so I did the next best thing and I sent her a message saying sorry."
"Well you at least tried. Don't worry about it now, let's just have fun tonight," I rubbed her arm.
"For what it's worth Ness, I totally disagreed with Jake on this one; I hope he knows he is missing out." He closed his eyes and put two fingers to his temple.
"What are you doing?" I was baffled.
"Searing the image of you onto my brain. I will make sure to bring it up copious amount of times next time we are phased together."
I had to laugh. "Thanks Seth."
He reached over and also gave me a kiss on the cheek. "Just enjoy yourself."
They wondered over to Embry and Adeline and they found Clynt standing with Graham. Rose came in through the door and she had a look of victory on her face. I peered back at Graham who appeared to be a little nervous and I wondered why. I was just about to ask him when Lottie walked in.
Graham's eyes were on stalks.
So were mine as I took her in. Rose had completely transformed her; Lottie's dress, which was another Oscar creation. The dress itself was all over leaf embroidery with black beads on black mesh over nude silk with the strips of thick black silk in sections built around the dress like a cage up to her waist where a belt broke it up and it appeared to give and inside out appearance. The nude material on the upper part of the dress under the black was a corset and the girls were on show beneath the black mesh like leaf patterned material that gathered around the neck in what looked like a thick black jewelled necklace but was actually part of the dress which also left her shoulders bare and the nude skirt stopped above her knees, which gathered like a petticoat but you could see it through the black mesh which sat longer below her knees, also gathered like a petticoat, Rose teamed the outfit with strappy black shoes that had a thick band that covered the ankle. The dress was so unusual, just like mine.
But it was her hair and make-up that set off the dress. Her eyes were an intense shade of black and purple, and the only way I could describe how it looked was like the actress from black swan in her full black swan costume and make up; her eye make-up started before her inner eye and ended way out of her eye line like the black swan. Lottie's face was sharp and angular as Rose had contoured the make up that way, even her lips which were vivid purple to match the flecks of purple in the smoky near black eye shadow and now I noticed little black beads had been carefully glued around the edges of eye shadow, her hair was severely pulled back and up at the sides but the top backcombed and pulled back into an elaborate up do. Rose had teamed the dress with strappy shoes with a thick strap that covered her ankles. I was almost a little jealous because she looked good. Rose had also hidden the bags under her eyes.
Although I could tell the Lottie was uncomfortable with it. "I look like a clown," she complained.
"Lottie…." Clynt stammered. "You look awesome.
She rolled her eyes. "I resent that," Rose put her hands on her hips. "It's contemporary, art."
"I don't think Forks high school is ready for this," Lottie pointed to her face.
"I think you look amazing," Graham walked forward, reaching for Lottie's right hand, her wrist covered in a skin tight, flesh coloured bandage, I peered over at Rose who caught this and she looked over to Alice and I followed her eyes; Alice was 'far away'. Graham tied a flowered corsage onto her wrist, the flowers had been sprayed the same colour purple as her lips.
The way he was holding her hand made me a little uncomfortable; did Graham have feelings for Lottie?
"Well I think you look lovely," Alice chimed in, she was back.
"You do," Gemma echoed, smiling at her sister and Lottie half smiled back. I hoped they were on the way onto repairing their relationship.
"You look great Lottie," I added. There were agreements behind me. Rose handed Lottie a purple clutch that matched the colour of her corsage, which made Graham drop his hand. I was going to ask him about that later, try and get those thoughts out of his head because there was no way I saw Lottie being with someone else. She was imprinted! It would never work, her heart would always belong to Keith. I had never seen an imprint nor has there been any reference to any imprint having another relationship.
Lottie looked a little more relaxed after we all reassured her. It was nice to see us all dressed up. I pulled Rose to the side as we all mingled for a few moments; I knew Alice was keen to get pictures of us all. "Why make her look like that Rose?"
Rose narrowed her eyes. "She needed a change; she needs a boost of confidence. I think she looks pretty spectacular, don't you think?"
"I do," I peered over to Lottie was being embraced by Clynt. "But she doesn't look like…Lottie."
"That's the idea. I want her to have a mask tonight, to relax; being herself at the moment is causing her too much pain. We didn't need to do that with you, you have accepted what has happened and you are just waiting for Jacob to come to you," she played with a lock of my hair. "You're there sweetie; you don't need our help in that way."
Rose was totally right. I had accepted, moved on and waiting for Jacob to come to me. Rose was right, Lottie was not there yet. I peered over to her and she was visibly relaxing. Maybe for today, a mask was a good thing. "Ok guys, picture time!" Alice trilled, holding a camera in her hand. "I want everyone with their dates, outside the house by the front door and then I want a group picture at the door then another by the limo."
We made for the door and we waited whilst everyone had their pictures taken. Clynt took my hand when it was our turn, I stepped up onto the step and I felt another pair of eyes on me and I listened to that familiar heartbeat. I scanned through the trees but I couldn't see him. "Hey Ness, you need to smile!" Clynt turned me around and slipped his arms around my waist and clasped them over my stomach in a typical prom pose. I turned to Alice and flashed a smile, my heart racing and my face flushing slightly. He was here and he could see me. I knew it wasn't the same but it was at least something. I could hear another heartbeat and I knew Keith was here too.
"Ok guys, one side by side then one of you by yourselves," Alice ordered. We had more pictures taken and as Clynt had his individual picture taken, I scanned the forest but I still could not see.
Seth came over to me. "You know?"
"Yeah, I can't see him," I whispered back.
"He's wolf," he explained simply and walked back over to Gemma. I nodded my thanks to him as he walked away. Alice clicked her tongue and I took my spot at the door and smiled.
Steven and Megan were up next and he scooped her up into his arms and roaring at the same time, Alice clicking away and they made us all laugh. Megan dramatically 'swooning' in his arms. Lastly was Graham and Lottie, she took her position on his left and inclined her body so that Graham was behind her. He stepped closer towards her and I looked around and everyone else were talking amongst themselves, Megan had captured Rose's attention and I turned back to see Graham slip his left arm around her waist and rested his hand on her hip and Lottie froze for a moment but relaxed again. He moved something from the top of her bare shoulder, grazing her skin and I heard with my vampire hearing, a growl in the distance.
I smirked; Lottie might have been completely unaware but Keith wasn't. Graham moved his arm around her waist and Lottie moved the one on her hip up so it met the other at her waist. They both smiled for the camera, then side by side. Maybe I was reading the signs wrong. But then I heart Graham's heart flutter when his arm was back around Lottie's waist and I knew I was spot on; how long had he felt that way. They both had their individual pictures done then Alice shouted. "Group picture! We don't have long!" I was aware that two other heartbeats had gone and my heart sank a little.
Everyone gathered at the front door and cheesed it up as Alice snapped and we did the same in front of the limo. "Right guys, we need to get going!" Clynt opened the limo door; he had taken it upon himself to be our leader tonight. "Thank you Alice, Rose, we know how hard it is to get these scrubbers looking a little decent," he gently poked me in the side.
"Hey, speak for yourself!" Adeline raised an eyebrow. "And how long did it take you?"
"Three hours," Steven answered for him.
"Here you!" Clynt shook his hand at his boyfriend.
"Oh get in and stop moaning you big homo," Steven pushed his boyfriend into the limo.
I turned to Alice and Rose. "Thank you, we all needed this tonight."
"Yes, thank you," Lottie smiled and it was genuine and she hugged Rose.
"Thank you for doing us up and the dress," Kirsty twirled around. "It was nice meeting you."
Alice grinned, she was in her element, she just love to dress people. I hugged my aunts as Kevin was helping Kirsty into the limo, Seth was next, helping Gemma manoeuvre her dress, followed by Embry who practically had to lift Adeline in as her dress was a little restrictive around the thigh area. Lottie was in next as Graham held her clutch bag, her dress wasn't as long and he followed her in and now I took a step in and I felt hands gather my dress carefully as I got myself into the darkened limo. "Have fun guys!" Alice called.
"Keep dancing!" Rose said. "No matter how sore your feet get!" she giggled and shut the door.
We were all in darkness. "Oooooh," Embry imitated ghost sounds.
The engine started and the party lights started in the limo, laser lights darted all about, lighting our faces with greens, reds and blues, dance music erupted from the speakers and there was a mini bar; champagne bottles, flutes and other drinks were in a long unit full of ice. "Whoo! Alcohol!" Kevin pumped the air.
"Not a chance guys," Embry said. "You are not twenty-one!"
Everyone in the limo turned their heads to Embry, all of us moving slightly as the driver set off. "Seriously Embry?" Lottie made a face.
Embry kept a straight face then creased up. "Nah, fuck that!" he reached over for the Sambuca and two shot glasses for him and Seth as Adeline made a face at his choice of drink.
Lottie reached over and handed Graham a bottle of champagne which he opened over the unit as the cork blew out from it and Kevin has to duck to save him getting a black eye. "Sorry dude, my bad!" Kevin waved him away and Graham poured Lottie a drink, gave her the flute and popped a straw in it, she looked at him. "So you don't ruin your lipstick," he grinned. She smiled back at him and then took a drink, Graham's eyes still on her.
He drew himself away and poured Adeline, Kirsty and Megan a drink but Megan refused, taking a shot from Seth, he handed that drink to Gemma and poured the last of the bottle into a flute, handing it to me. He opened another bottle but careful with the cork this time and poured two flutes, giving them to Steven and Clynt. He reached over for a beer, opened it, handing that to Kevin and he took one for himself. I took a drink of the lovely bubbly liquid and I could feel it travel down my throat.
"Steven, pass me the bottle please?" Lottie asked, she had already finished her flute and she poured herself another, and downed that one just as quick. The limo bumped in the road and she fell forward, Graham catching her. "Ooops," she giggled. He righted her and laughed with her as she poured herself a third glass and drunk it just as quick through the straw.
She went for a fourth when Graham grabbed her hand taking it in his. "Take it easy Lottie, or they won't be letting you in. Champagne gets people drunk too quick, have an alcopop and drink it slow," he passed her a melon Bacardi.
I reached for a melon Bacardi and opened it by hand. "Oooh," Clynt followed my eye line. "Mini's!" he lifted a couple up and the clinked. "Get them in your pockets boys!" he threw a couple at Kevin, passed some to Kirsty and so on until there was none left and they were all in pockets or purses, I had to admit I put two bailey's into mine.
"Guys, drink up, we will be at the school soon and we need to take these," Lottie lifted up a packet of strong mints. "I think there is too much Sambuca in that bottle!" she reached for shot glasses and handed them to everyone as the bottle made its way around.
The second bottle was opened and half consumed by the time we pulled up to the school. I took a couple of strong mints as I felt warm and relaxed as the alcohol made its way through my system. We were all relaxed, a little loud and enjoying ourselves and I was glad to see Lottie was enjoying herself as much as we were.
The music was pumping from the limo, the lights were becoming a little conjoined but I took no notice, I was happy like this so I decided that I would take my time with any other drink that passed my lips and I had a strong suspicion that the drinks were going to be spiked with it being the two senior years. We stopped outside the entrance to the gym which had a red carpet rolled out to meet guests, I had no idea what the theme was for tonight.
The driver opened the limo door. "Ok ladies and gentlemen, I will be back here at midnight to collect you.
"Yes Sir!" Clynt saluted him, putting his glass into the unit and got out first, he reached his hand in for me and I took it, Steven gathering the layers of my dress to make sure I didn't get caught. "There you go, sweetie," I was out the limo and I took Clynt's arm. I looked back to see Steven and Megan were already out followed by the rest. We walked down the red carpet to see two men dressed in black; one I had recognised as one of Grandpa's police officers. They both held wands and as we walked through they shimmied them up and down and they didn't find what they were looking for. I had hoped that they did not spring the booze.
We walked into the gymnasium, the music and voices hitting us like a wave. "Oh wow!"
The bleachers were all pulled back; around the gym were tables that held six with slim chairs surrounding each one. The tables had white flowers as centre pieces which were elaborately constructed to stand at two feet tall on each table mixed with lights that glittered. The tables were also dressed in white and the black wire looking chairs all had large white ribbons tied around them. I looked over to see a DJ with his equipment and lights on an elevated stage towards the left hand side of the gym and I could see a very long table along the far bleachers with food underneath all the tin foiled plates along with rows of popcorn, candy floss and bowls full of punch. In each corner stood large Oscar statues, the DJ had a Hollywood sign above him. On the other side of the wall was a large movie shutter that directors used and a large film rolls trailing from either side. I looked up to see red and gold balloons that adorned the ceiling, unable to see the ceiling at all and each balloon had long coloured ribbons dangling from them, long enough so that we could touch them. On the ribbons were little open scrolls that had Oscar winner's names on them. I looked on the floor and there were Hollywood stars with the names of famous stars on them. But above all there was a large disco ball hanging from the ceiling that had lights from each corner of the gym shining onto it making the lights refract off of every surface.
There were two classrooms that lead off from the gym; they were past the changing rooms, down another corridor. They weren't used that often but I assumed that was the prepping area. Next to where we entered, there was a photo area that had a red carpet leading to it and it was a silver sequinned archway adorned with stars and film rolls placed around it. The photographer had to large lights on tripods that shone down onto this archway; this was where we would get our pictures taken. "Come on Clynt, let's get our prom photo taken," I dragged him over, waiting for a couple to finish.
"Ok you two," the young man who was quite handsome directed us into the centre. There was a queue forming already so we didn't have long. We posed like we did before we left, Clynt adjusting my dress to show it off. We grinned, the camera flashed and we were ushered out as Steven and Megan took our place. Clynt was dragging me this time as he scoured out for a table. There were twelve of us but Clynt was already one step ahead as he picked one that was near the dance floor, not to near the DJ, and he took two tables and joined them together. Thankfully no one had occupied the tables yet as many of the students was on the dance floor.
Graham and Lottie walked in and I could see she was turning heads with her dress and make up and I was glad because she needed a confidence boost. Suddenly there was clapping from the boys that Lottie had been running with at PE and then everyone started to clap "Spartans! Spartans! Spartans!" they chanted. Lottie waved to everyone, blushing slightly, even under her amazing make up. The girls from our year flocked over to her and I heard them ask about her make-up and her dress. Lottie looked baffled although this was the most girl like she had been since she had been here and I was pleased for her.
Clynt had gotten us drinks and someone from his year was talking to him. "So you start in September then buddy?"
"Oh yeah, full scholarship with the Huskies," Clynt grinned back it him then turned to me and gave me a drink. I took a sip and I had to suppress a face at how bitter it was. "Yeah, do you want some punch with your liquor?"
I had to cough as it caught the back of my throat. "Wow! That is a bit strong."
"Stewey here has already spiked the punch bowls," he slapped his big jock friend on the back.
"Don't go advertising that Clynt!" Stewey chuckled. "I do want to graduate next week you know. "What are you studying?" Stewey changed the subject.
"That, I don't know, I need to let them know by next week though so that I they can secure a spot in the classes. I know I will be there for a few years, I was thinking of doing something completely out there, like astronomy, cos you know it's different. But my main will be either biology or chem, whatever I pick I do the other the following year, what to do with them though, I'm not sure. Gemma has already said I have a job with her, and the thought of working with drugs to help fight diseases does appeal to me."
"That sounds good bud."
"And what about you?"
"I'm taking a year out to travel, work and play then maybe I'll think about it. Looking at media studies."
They talked for a few more minutes then Stewey went off to see his friend who was coughing at the punch bowl. There were a couple of teachers milling around; they were bound to know it was spiked, a new song came on and Clynt took the drink out of my hand. "Let's dance senorita," Clynt took my hand and lead me out to the dance floor. There were other couples there as the song changed from upbeat to slow. Clynt took my right hand in his left, up by my shoulder and put his left arm around my waist and I put my left arm over his shoulder and we swayed and moved our feet in time with the music. Suddenly Clynt twirled me as two of the jocks were joke dancing with each other which involved colliding with people. "Told you I would look after you," Clynt whispered in my ear.
"Jeezo Clynt, you looked almost straight there!" Kevin whisked Kirsty around, making us all laugh. "Dancing with a pretty young lady."
"I know, I need to get my gay on," Clynt let go of my hand and punching Kevin on the arm then taking my hand again. "But I'll get my gay on later, I am with my chick," he winked at me.
"Good, I need a little looking after," I winked back and he twirled me under his arm.
I peered round to see Adeline and Embry, Seth and Gemma dancing and I could see some of the jocks staring at the two wolves with a little envy, in regards to their sheer size, I listened in to their conversation. "God Jack, what the fuck to they feed those boys on the res?"
"Who knows, maybe they mix roids in with their protein shake," Jack replied.
"I doubt it, but I want what they are eating, cos his bicep is the same size as my face!"
I had to stifle a giggle or Clynt would wonder what I was laughing at. I looked over to Seth who was supressing a smirk. I looked over to see Graham and Lottie dancing. Her eyes were closed as he led her around the dance floor, I imagined the alcohol had affected her more than she thought. His hand was too close to her butt for my liking and I saw Embry looking over too.
The music changed; Clynt and I danced energetically to this one, the others joined in and we were all dancing together. Time had passed, we said hello to people, complimented them, they complemented us. Teachers meandered in and out through the throng of students, removing alcohol if they were stupid enough to drink it in front of people. I already had another two drinks and I couldn't stomach how strong the alcohol was so I stuck to the water they had available.
Everyone seem to be having a good time, as prom's go, this being my first one. I was trying not to think about him, and I was glad he got to see how nice I looked. I found Lottie sitting at our table by herself with a drink of punch in her hand. I made my way through the dancing bodies to see her sitting with her eyes closed. "Hey, are you ok?"
Lottie looked up, her make up still intact. "Yeah Ness, I am just sooo drunk. I don't understand it."
"Maybe your body is still adjusting to the blood loss," I said quietly, sitting next to her.
"Maybe."
"Are you having a good time?"
"Yeah," she looked far away.
"What is it?"
"It's not the same."
"I know," I took her hand and she didn't pull it away. "But these guys have been amazing, being our dates."
"They have," she turned her head to look at Graham and Clynt dancing moronically. "Did you vote for Steven and Clynt for king and queen?"
"Yeah, I think the whole school has, although I hope they don't find it offensive."
"Oh they won't, I think they will be rather touched," Lottie slurred her words slightly and lifted the glass to her mouth and I took it from her and replaced it with my glass of water. "Hey!"
"I think you have had enough, they will end up booting you out if you get any worse."
"Yeah fair point. I drank the wee bottles from my purse and the punch tastes weird."
"That's cos it's spiked," I said sarcastically.
"Oh, that would explain a lot, I must be pissed if I never even tasted the alcohol!" she snorted."
"Listen, I don't quite know how to broach this, but…"
"But what," Lottie stared at me.
"Graham…"
"What about him?"
"I think he likes you," I blurted out.
Lottie glared at me then she started to laugh hysterically. "Don't be so bloody stupid."
"Can't you see it?"
"See what?"
"The way he looks at you, the way he touches you."
Lottie made a face. "I think you are looking for something that isn't there."
"Look, I have only just noticed it and maybe more so because he knows that you and Keith are no longer together."
"But….No. I've known Graham for a long time, it is not possible," she shook her head, screwing up her eyes.
"I'm only saying what I am seeing Lottie. Do you think it's possible, that you have feelings for him?"
Lottie eyes widened and for a moment I thought she was going to be sick. "No! I couldn't….the thought of…the thought of being with any man that is not… that is not….that is not him. He practically sent me away and I literally feel like I can't argue with that, and…and that I can't see myself being with anyone else."
"Even if that meant no children, being by yourself?"
"At the moment, yes. I wouldn't want to be with anyone else. It is something I have thought about, not being with him, and what the future means for me if that is the case. I don't even know if it would work, me being in another relationship; but the fact that they both banished me, makes it all feel final that is what sucks. I haven't spoken, or seen him in two weeks and to be honest, I am literally just functioning. I always said to myself that I would never let anyone dictate to me how to live my life, that I would never really need anyone, but I need him like I need to breathe. Its killing me that he has banished me, it kills me that Jake banished me too, because ultimately it means I can't see him."
"But you broke off the engagement."
"Because he banished me; he asked me to leave and at the time I saw no other way," she dumped the glass of water onto the table and she picked up the one with the punch and downed it. She saw me from the corner of her eye and she put the glass down. "Look, I am just enjoying myself."
"But you need alcohol to enjoy yourself?"
"Don't psychoanalysis me Ness."
"I don't mean to but I don't want you thrown out."
"I will be discreet," Lottie smirked.
The microphone boomed with someone tapping it as a senior took centre stage. It caused us all to stop what we were doing. Lottie and I both got up from the table and joined our group in the middle of the dance floor. Everyone that was outside started to filter in and the boy who was on the stage waited for this to happen. Graham found Lottie and he put his arm around her waist and for a moment Lottie froze; I was glad to see she did listen to me.
Clynt was behind me, his arms around my waist. "Hey sugar, are they announcing who is king and queen?"
"I think so."
"Hello everyone, for those that don't know me, I am Eric; I am in charge of the events committee, we hope you have had a fabulous night!" Everyone, including myself clapped and cheered because they had done a good job. "We would like everyone to take a seat as we have a few awards to give out." We all looked at each other and we did as we were told. I sat next to Clynt. "I hope you are all ready for this. They have been voted by the two senior years and the votes have been counted and verified. The awards have been designed by 'Daisy's all the tea in china room' from Forks and they have gone along with our Hollywood theme," he held up little clapper boards that showed a little plaque with the winner's name. The tea room was a well-known restaurant that also sold arts, crafts, jewellery and all sorts really; Alice had taken me before I matured. There was a round of applause at the company that had sponsored this as he reached behind him to a table that held quite a few little clapper boards that they use for directors used for their films. "Now I have to get through these quickly, he picked up the first clapper board. "Starting with these prestigious awards, the award for best ginger goes to!" he picked up a clapper board with a ginger clapper. The DJ did a drum roll sound effect. "Megan Dunn!"
The whole gym erupted with cheer and we stared at Megan who looked stunned. "Go on Megan, you and your hair!" Graham cheered and we all clapped as she got up from her seat and made her way to the stage.
"You have been voted the best ginger by our two senior years. Do you have anything to say?" Eric said to Megan through the microphone as he handed the clapper to Megan.
Megan stood in front of the mic and thought for a second. "Gingers rule!" we all cheered for her as she made a 'rock on' sign with her fingers then descended the stairs and back to us, waving her award. "I can't believe this! This is awesome!" she sat back down looking at her award.
Steven gave her a pat on the back. "Well done Ginger, it was always in the bag!"
"But there are other gingers here," she said.
"But you, and to quote a well-known book; have been 'kissed by fire'," he stroked the side of her hair.
Clynt threw a balled up napkin at Steven. "I didn't know you could read!" Steven stuck out his tongue.
"Now the award for 'Best Smile' goes to….Gemma Watson!" Eric announced.
We all turned to Gemma and she looked as surprised as Megan. "Go and get it honey," Seth grinned at his imprint. She got up and she got to the stage quickly to receive the reward given to her by the school.
"Speech!" someone shouted at her.
Gemma looked out towards us all. "Thanks." She left the stage as soon as she was on it and we all laughed at her as she came back to our table. She showed Seth her award and I heard him whisper; 'your smile lights up a room'.
I smiled then saddened again.
"The award for 'Best Couple' goes too; Charlie Cruz and Lindsey Seymour!" the crowd applauded for them, us too. "They have been childhood sweethearts since the beginning of time!" The couple made their way to the stage, Lindsey in a beautiful red gown that highlighted her light brown hair. They took their award and kissed each other on the stage them left. "The award for best dressed goes to: Steven Taylor!"
More applause. "I should hope so!" Steven slammed his hand down on the table then got up to bow to everyone which made everyone clap more! He got up and snatched the award from Eric's hand. "I would have been insulted if I didn't get this!" Steven flicked his hand making us all laugh. "But thank you all for voting!" he took a gracious bow and left the stage.
Eric laughed into the mic. "Ok, thanks Steven for that clarification, lets crack on, the award for best hair goes to….Renesmee Cullen!"
I was as surprised as everyone else and they all clapped. Clynt reached over to whisper in my ear. "You hair is amazing, half the girls wish they could have it, and probably some of the closet guys too, now go up there and work it girl!" He pushed me and I was up on my feet.
I walked towards the stage and I felt a little weird collecting an award for 'best hair' but it was funny none the less. Eric moved out of the way of the mic and let me take the stage as he gave me my award clapper board. I looked down at everyone and I decided to make a tiny speech. "I would like to thank my…family for good genes. To my aunts for showing me how to work it!" I threw my arm up in the air with the clapper board and everyone laughed. I got down from the stage, quite elated to join my date who patted me on the back.
"Ok folks, let's get this moving!" Eric shouted. "The award for 'rear of the year' goes to…. Jeremy Butler!"
I looked around to see Jeremy get up from the jock table, jump up onto the table. "YES!" he screamed the jumped down, knocking over the centre piece and running up to the stage, grabbing the award, undoing his tux and belt from his pants and mooned us all!
"GET IT ALL OUT!" Steven shouted pumping the air.
One of the teachers ran up to the stage and grabbed him before he could turn around to show us what he had to offer. "BOOOO!" Clynt shouted.
"Thanks Jeremy!" Eric saluted. "The next award for 'Most likely to fall whilst receiving this award' goes to…..not really a tough one on this… Lottie Willets! Our Spartan Captain who got us to second place today!"
Lottie looked up from her new drink, when did she get that? "What?!"
"You got an award for likely to fall whilst getting it," Kirsty laughed.
Lottie started to laugh, then she got up, stumbling slightly and Graham grabbed her hips to steady her. "Lottie, you may actually fall going up there!" he laughed.
"Do you need a hand?" Seth asked.
"No thank you," she replied a little icily; she hadn't really spoken to Seth or Embry although she needed reminding that it wasn't their fault. "I will manage by myself." She steadied herself and then started to walk as if she was stone cold sober. She walked up the stairs, not even looking at them and took the award from Eric. "Sorry to disappoint ladies and gentlemen. I won't be falling tonight, maybe later though," she winked as she gracefully jumped down from the stage, her dress flying behind her and landing with poise. I was surprised myself and this earned more cheers.
"Ok," Eric was back at the mic. "The award for the 'Biggest Computer Geek' goes to; Eustace Grant!" A boy wearing thick rimmed glasses who was going stag with his friends got up quickly to get his award, didn't say anything as he grabbed it and ran off. "The award for 'Best School Spirit' goes to; Stacey Turner!"
A squeal came from the table behind me followed by more squeals and screams which was enough to make the ears of small animals, bleed. We all turned around to see Stacey who was in a huge fuchsia pink quinceanera dress, and I was amazed how she was able to walk in it, got up and ran up to the stage, her dress bobbing as she made it to the stage and taking the award from Eric, but stretching over to give him a kiss on the cheek. I didn't really know Stacey but she always said hello to everyone, including the less popular people and I liked that about her; she wasn't stuck up. "Wow people, thank you! As of next Saturday I give up my mantle of head cheerleader to my protégé Amy Saunders," she pointed to another blonde girl behind me. "I have loved being at this school, I have loved being a part of the Spartan's cheerleader squad since the beginning and I am a little sad to go to the big bad world of real life. I know I come across as a 'dumb blonde' and I may give off the air of that but I love being a part of this squad and this school and I will be sad to see everyone go off to do their own thing but excited at the same time. Good luck to everyone! Thank you so much!" she waved her award and descended the stage.
"Thank you Stacey! Now the Batman and Robin Award for the best bromance goes to…. Nick Steller and Rick Hughes!" I liked these two, they were nice to everyone, and they were Clynt and Steven's friends and also played on the lacrosse team.
They ran up to get their awards and I went over to get a glass of water for myself and Lottie. I felt a presence next to me. "Hey Ness," Seth whispered.
"Hey Seth, are you having a good night?"
"Yeah, I would ask the same but.."
"I am, but I miss….him."
"I know, is she ok?" she inclined his head towards my best friend.
"She misses Keith."
"Graham is a little….."
"I know, I don't think Lottie sees that. Have you ever known an imprint to have a relationship with someone else?"
He shook his head. "It's never been heard of, although I think it would be too soon for her and I honestly don't think Keith would allow it, he would break away from the pack if Jake ordered him to stay away from her."
"Oh I know that, and she definitely knows that it is far too soon," I clarified. "I just wondered if things didn't patch up between them."
"I have seen Keith and Jacob," he pointedly said to me. "They may have banished the pair of you but they are hurting inside. I see it, I feel it. I know it is as just as bad for you both."
I nodded, pouring another glass. "But that's the way it is for now. I have dealt with it, I don't think Lottie has. It will just take time."
"You know I don't agree with it, the thought of being away from Gemma is enough to make me feel ill."
"Thanks Seth, I appreciate that."
"The award for 'Best Friends for Life' goes to…." Eric interrupted. "Gemma Watson and Adeline Klose!"
Seth was gone from my side and was with his imprint as we all clapped for them. They both went up on stage to collect their awards and Gemma was at the microphone. "I can't imagine my life without my best friend, Adeline here, she has been my rock through the good and the bad and she is like my family," she took Adeline's hand.
"Gemma is like the sister I never had, most of you know that my Mom and Dad abandoned my brother and me and Gemma has always been there for me. I couldn't ask for a better friend," she looked at her friend. "Sisters!" she shouted.
I looked over at Lottie who was a little stony faced but said nothing. The girls came off stage and were greeted by their imprints. "Thanks girls!" Eric waved at them. "We have to get moving so will make theses ones quick. The award for the 'Do you even lift?' goes to…and this one had one vote between them but it's Harry Tait!"
"Damn it!" Kevin shouted but he smiled at his friend who I think he went to the gym with. Harry collected his award.
"The Einstein Award for the senior year only goes to Marian Lister." I knew this one was for the senior year only. She was a little shy and one of her friends had to coax her in going up on stage. "The award for Best Class clown goes to….. Scott White!"
"YEEESSSSS!" Scott ran around the gym screaming at each table until he finally went up to get his award. "I knew all those years of being funny would pay off!"
"What school did you go to?" Clynt called. "I don't remember you being funny!"
Scott flicked him the birdie as he ran past but Clynt was grinning at him. "Ok now, now everyone gather round, this is the final awards of the night, the most prominent accolade a senior can get at their prom. Chairs scraped, heels clicked and we were all on the dancefloor. The lights were lowered and spotlights scanned the crowds. "This is the award for Prom King and Queen. The school has been voting for the last few weeks and the results were counted today," Eric left the mic for a moment to retrieve a crown for the king and a tiara for the queen and a sceptre for each one. "Drumroll please my good man!" he pointed to the DJ who provided the sound effect. "The person who Forks High School has voted for Prom King is….. Clynt Copeland!"
The applause was raucous along with the cheers and the spotlight landed on him and me; I was holding Clynt's hand as I turned to him. "You are the Prom King!" I screamed, reaching up to place a kiss on his cheek.
And for once, Clynt as speechless. "I…I…"
"Go and get your crown," I pushed him. "You deserve it!"
Clynt made his way to the stage, the spotlight following him. He deftly jumped up onto the stage and Eric crowned him and handed him his sceptre. "SPEECH! SPEECH!" someone shouted behind us and we all joined in.
Clynt stared out into the crowd and he honestly looked confused. "I really don't know what to say-"
"That's a first!" Graham shouted.
"Shut it you, your king commands it!" Clynt jabbed the sceptre in Graham's direction. "Thank you so much, I knew I had been nominated but I never thought I would have been voted. I am truly surprised. You all know…that I am gay, and in this day and age it is the norm and apart from the odd small minded people, everyone at this school has been amazing. So thank you for making my time at this school, as a big, gay Texan bearable! And I want to wish you all the best for your futures, however they turn out." We all cheered for him as Eric clapped him on the back and directed him to where he was to stand.
"Ok, now this is a bit unconventional, but the whole school were all of the same thought. The person who has won Prom Queen is…." Another drumroll from the DJ. "Steven Taylor!"
The spotlight hit Steven and his face dropped. The whole place went silent, unsure of his reaction when he suddenly burst out laughing. "Oh man, this is priceless!" he shouted.
He bent down and kissed Megan on the lips causing a few gasps and then he pulled away, Megan hiding a smile. "Steven, I think that has made me even more gay!"
This made is all laugh; Steven sashayed up to the stage, his kilt bellowing behind him, Clynt held out his hand so that Steven could make the stage in one jump as he helped him up. Eric tentitivley placed the tiara on Steven's head and handed him the sceptre, Steven looking up at his tiara as he went to the mic. "Bitches, there was only going to be one Queen here tonight!" there was more laughter. "I know some of you will be a little disappointed that you didn't get this tonight, but that doesn't mean anything. Look at all of you girls tonight, you all look totally amazing, you guys look good too but let's be honest, no one could outshine this get up," he pointed up and down himself and then twirled making his kilt flare out a little. "This year has been truly amazing, but the last few years have been totally awesome with this man in my life," he stared at is boyfriend, holding his hand out for him which Clynt took and joined him by the microphone. "Thank you all for being part of that," he started to clap and everyone joined in.
Eric took control of the microphone. "I present to you, your Prom King and Queen!" More clapping and I was clapping enthusiastically with them. From the corner of my eye I could see Lottie fanning herself with her hand. "Now it's time for your King and Queen to take the floor, so everyone get off it!"
I moved over to our table with everyone else and I saw Lottie walk towards the exit as Clynt and Steven took the centre of the floor for their first dance seeing as the other had dates and Clynt had been dancing with me all night, keeping true to his word. People were taking pictures and I took a couple myself when as the music started and it was their song; 'Snow Patrol, Open your eyes', which was quite fitting for them. I saw Graham slip out the same way that Lottie went.
Seth stood up and I imitated him. "I got it," I held up my hand, he was staring at the exit but he nodded at me. Gemma looked at me confused and I shook my head once at Seth, I think Lottie and Graham would be embarrassed to know if we had been discussing something that might not even be there. I crossed around the back of the dance floor, as so not to interrupt the happy couple and I knew they were not in the gym classrooms as they went out the exit of the gym.
I inhaled to take in their scents and they had both gone into the school around by the entrance to get to biology. I looked around and I quickly ran over at human pace, because you never knew who was around. I opened the door carefully and I could hear voices two corridors down. "Do you need me to get you some water?"
"I have had enough water Graham, Ness had made sure I am truly hydrated." I moved down one corridor until I was at the corner of the one they were in. I could see them both reflected in the glass of the door that was opposite me; Lottie was bent over, her hands on her knees and she was breathing deeply, Graham's hand on her back. And she started to giggle. "Oh Graham I am so drunk!"
Graham laughed with her. "I know, you have drunk a lot. Every time I took a glass of punch out of your hand you found another. I know that you are not okay with something, you can't use alcohol as a way to function."
Lottie pushed Graham away and straightened up. "Don't start! Ness already went down that road with me," I could see her roll her eyes.
Graham smirked. "Well Nessie is right. Do you want to go home?"
"Nah, I just wanted some fresh air but I think that made me worse."
"Come on, the food is waiting, maybe some food in your stomach may sober you up."
"Urgh. Do I have to?"
"Yes," he held his hand out for her and she took it, but I could see her staring at it. She started to walk but her ankle buckled and a little squeal came from her. I almost rushed round there and then but something held me back. She started to fall but Graham caught her deftly, his left arm snaked around her waist, his right hand taking her left and swinging her up and against the wall to steady her. My vampire eyes were catching all this in the reflection as Lottie blinked a little and she took a moment to realise where she was. Lottie was the same height as Graham in heels and as they reached full height against the wall, their faces were an inch apart.
Lottie had her eyes closed and I know from being drunk myself she was trying to stop the dizziness, her mouth slightly open as she breathed in slowly. But Graham closed the gap and it was my turn to become wide eyed.
Graham leaned in and gently kissed Lottie!
AN; Queue gasp!
