Chapter 29

"You wanna take my daughter to the front lines?" Hiccup asked, breaking a long silence. He shifted closer to Nadia, his arm behind her.

"I'm not a child, I can make my own decisions." Nadia pushed her father's arm from her shoulder.

"You're barely 19, and you're still my daughter." I sat back, watching Alyssa play with a small horse figurine I made out of ice.

"What is your gift?" I asked quietly. Nadia looked away from her father.

"I have heightened senses, perfect for hunting and flying." Alyssa threw her horse across the room, but Nadia caught it before it hit the ground and handed it back to her. "And babysitting." She smiled.

"Flying?" I asked, not sure if she had a winter Guardian up her sleeve as well.

"My father is the dragon rider, he brought some of his dragons here from Burke and formed a new dragon colony, mine is Quick Flame." She indicated out the back window and, glancing out I saw a flock of oversized birds, or as I've just been informed, dragons. "Father named her." She added quickly, pretending not to notice Hiccup's glare.

"I remember now, you and Merida rode into your wedding on dragonback" I laughed at the memory of Hiccup almost falling off his black dragon. Alyssa stood from her spot on the floor and went over to the window, looking out at the dragons blowing columns of fire at each other and into the air. She clapped her hands, laughing, and I saw the ice horse melt in her hands.

"Lyss no!" I called out, a second before the windowsill caught fire.

"Alyssa!" Jack jumped over the couches, pulling Alyssa away from the sill while my ice froze it over and snuffed out the flames. "Are you okay?" he asked her, checking her for burns.

"Sorry daddy. Mama said no." He pulled her into a hug, breathing a sigh of relief when he found no marks.

"Daddy? I thought her father was a Prince of the Isle." Merida was watching the scene before her; only to her it would look like Alyssa holding air.

"Uh, well not exactly. He was her stepfather, technically." Merida looked over to Hiccup before returning her gaze to my daughter.

"Who is her father?" Hiccup questioned. Jack told Alyssa to go off and play on the other side of the room, giving her a new horse to play with.

"We need Nadia, and to get Nadia to come with us, we need Merida and Hiccup to trust us. Just tell them." He turned to follow the little girl tugging on his hand. I turned back to my cousin and began the long story that was Jackson and I becoming Jack, Alyssa and I.

"You're asking me to believe in Santa Clause?" I rolled my eyes,

"That's part of it, but more so to believe in Jack. It's the only way to see him." Merida looked over to Alyssa again and watched her prance the ice horse around the floor. She smiled and pressed her eyes closed a moment, taking a breath. Opening her eyes she stood up, followed by her husband and daughter.

"Hiya." Jack mumbled as Alyssa danced the horse over his head. "We could use your help Nadia." She sighed and looked sidelong at her father.

"You're willing to let their daughter, who is two years old, face their enemies but not me?" The whole room turned to Hiccup expectantly and with a reluctant sigh, he gave consent for Nadia to leave with us, to which Nadia and Merida hi-fived. "Can I take the dragons?" Hiccup didn't miss a beat before responding,

"You're not taking Toothless!" Nadia rolled her eyes,

"I love Toothless, but he's getting old. Gums, Quick Fire, Frostbite, Magda and Little Bite will do." Hiccup took a breath and, with his eyes closed and his fists clenched, managed to speak,

"You hurt the dragons and you're not hunting or flying till I die." Nadia saluted and hurried from the room to prep the dragons.

"No hunt this time I guess?" Merida smiled.

"Not this time cousin, but I can leave you with a parting gift." I recreated my ice bow and quiver on the table between us and Merida picked up the bow, examining it.

"It wont melt when you leave, will it?" I laughed, remembering my earlier attempts at the same gift when I was younger.

"Thank you for being the fun cousin, despite being twice my age." Merida laughed with me, but before long it was time to leave and we met Nadia on the field of the castle where five dragons sat in a row.

"I take it you'll be flying yourself Jack, but you'll tire way too fast carrying Elsa and your daughter. They can take Frostbite." I arched an eyebrow at the choice of dragon, "I thought it would be fitting" Nadia smiled and climbed onto Quick Fire. I handed Alyssa to Jack and pulled myself onto Frostbite's back. Jack kicked up and handed Alyssa back to me, remaining floating in mid air. "Where to captain?"

"French Court" I replied. Nadia nodded and kicked Quick Fire in the side and the small fleet of dragons took off with Jack on our heels.
