Diana couldn't sleep again that night. She was too terrified to do so. Liam's words still haunted her mind. Jonathan was obsessed with her…

Why hadn't she seen it? His possessiveness…his determination to keep her close to him… part of her had always known there was something wrong. But she chose not to see it. He had made her feel so special…and if she was given a choice…she would probably go back to him.

She missed his warmth at night. She missed his arms around her, his warm body pressing against her, his sweet words…

'You're so beautiful…'

She rubbed her teary eyes as she began to cry. 'Why did you leave me?' she choked out.

Tears ran down her cheeks. Her heart hurt for him. How badly she would just have him back…

'You promised me we would leave together…you broke your promise', she sobbed uncontrollably.

She kept sobbing softly. Why had he left her like this? Why hadn't he abandoned the criminal life to be with her? Wasn't she supposed to be important to him? Or was crime and scaring people literally to death more important to him?

She looked at the ring around her finger. 'We were going to get married. Now…we can never be together again', she sobbed; 'Jonathan…I can't life without you', she cried.

She kept crying, unaware of her father in the doorway.

Gabriel's expression was one of despair at seeing his daughter like this. He slowly closed the door, allowing her to be upset by herself.

'O'Connell, Wayne wants you in the board room.'

Gabriel frowned, but got up anyways. What could Bruce Wayne want from him? Yes he had been beside Fox ever since the two of them had been sent down to Applied Sciences, but Fox was the brighter one of the two.

Nervously, he went inside the board room, finding the young Wayne staring out the window. 'Mr. Wayne -'

'Please call me Bruce, Gabriel.'

Gabriel gave a faint nod as the prince of Gotham turned to meet his eyes and took a seat at the large table.

'I heard you found your daughter again. How are you?' he asked.

Gabriel took a seat himself, sighing. 'I could be better', he admitted truthfully.

Bruce frowned at him.

'She was held captive over the span of seven months. In that time…she was subjected to so much mental and emotional manipulation she doesn't see the difference between right or wrong anymore', Gabriel paused, swallowing; 'I wake up at night, hearing her cry. Sometimes…she cries for her abductor to come and take her back. Other times, she won't stop blaming herself for what has happened to her', he explained.

Bruce watched the man, swallowing thickly. He felt for the man. He had heard of his daughter through Fox and partly through Gordon. He was glad she had been found. But the danger wouldn't stop for there, no, fate would be too kind to give her a break; the man that had kidnapped her, Jonathan Crane, now known as the Scarecrow after what had happened in the Narrows, was still at large.

He rubbed his forehead. He wanted to help the poor girl. He wanted her to have someone she could trust and confide in, besides her father and stepmother. Perhaps he could lend a hand. But he wouldn't suggest that now. The girl had gone through enough. He couldn't expect her to just open up to everyone again. Her trust in people had been badly damaged.

'I should go. I promised her I'd take her to the cemetery where they buried her best friend', Gabriel got up.

'Of course, go ahead', Bruce answered with an understanding smile.

The cemetery was cold and abandoned. Diana held her letter tightly to her chest as her eyes scanned the names on the tombstones. She stopped in her tracks as soon as she saw Adam's name, her back tensing at being confronted with the truth; her friend was dead.

Her father stayed a few yards away, as she kneeled down. On his tombstone she read:

'Gone too soon from our lives but never from our hearts.

Beloved son and friend.'

She smiled slightly. 'I never thought I'd be able to be here', she started quietly.

She bit her lip, trying to hold back her tears.

'I-I never got to apologize. You died thinking our friendship was over. All because of him…' she sighed nervously.

She took out her letter, the one she had once written for him, so many months ago.

'Dear Adam,

I'm sorry I didn't believe you; you were right about Crane. He's completely insane. After he took me outside, he knocked me out, and brought me to his apartment, keeping me in what I can only describe as a modified basement.

As if that's not scary enough, he wants to do all sorts of things to me, and have me dress in provocative clothes for his amusement.

I'm so scared; he can barely keep his hands to himself, and every night, I'm forced to fall asleep feeling him pressing and throbbing against my back.

Adam…I'm so sorry for not believing you. I…was so blinded by my need for affection, I forgot what was important; our friendship. I threw it all away for the feeling of being admired…what I didn't realize was that I didn't need admiration as I already had someone who cared deeply for me…even after everything I had done.

It was you…all along. You were always there for me. You were a loyal friend, a brother and a guardian to me. I'll always love you and think of you as what you were, not as how things ended thanks to Crane.

All my love,

Diana'

She finished reading, swallowing the thick lump in her throat. She turned to look at the graves beside Adam's: his parents.

She folded up the letter, tucked it safely in front of Adam's tombstone. She went to the graves of his parents.

She fiddled with her hands nervously;

'Sylvia, Richard. I'm so sorry. You died too soon', she paused to wipe her tears; 'it seems I endanger everyone around me, because of that shadow that haunts me', she rubbed her tearful eyes.

Wrapping her arms around herself protectively, her thoughts strayed to the events of the last week. Going outside was a rare occasion now as she figured this way she wouldn't endanger herself or those around her. She knew Jonathan was very possessive of her and would stop at nothing to obtain her again.

That thought scared her. She was going to live her life constantly looking over her shoulder, until he was off the streets. But what if he got caught? Then what? Could she testify against him? Could she really put the man she still loved so dearly behind bars?

She exhaled deeply. She didn't know whether she could or not. Turning back to her father, she ran over to him and hugged him. Despite everything, she still wanted to stay with him. Yes, he had done her wrong, but he had apologized and was now taking care of her. She couldn't go through all this by herself. She wanted her father in her life.

'Come on, let's go', he spoke softly.

She walked with him, completely unaware of the black Mercedes that had been parked across the street ever since she arrived.

He barely recognized her. At first glance, he had to double check whether it was actually her. Crane felt saddened; she tried so hard to cover herself up now. She wore jeans and an oversized sweater. Her hair was tucked away in a braid. She looked so exhausted. It worried him.

He exhaled. Why did she try to disappear?

'Well I think Smith told her about what we told him, Johnny.'

'What you told him. I wasn't in control.' Crane corrected his dark half.

'Either way…it looks like she's trying to disappear so we won't find her.'

Crane absently shook his head. He refused to believe that. She loved him, he knew she did. All he had to do was get her alone.

'I won't lose her. I refuse to', he declared mentally.

He watched as she worriedly looked over her shoulder. Her expression was filled with fear. It broke his heart to see her like this. If only he could go out to comfort her. He wanted her back in his arms…to slowly make love to her…

He rubbed his eyes. What could he possibly do now? She was clearly confused and he was worried his manipulation on her was starting to crack. She was starting to see the truth; it frightened him. He didn't want her to see him as a monster…not like everyone else…

She was his ray of sunshine, all his hope of ever becoming a better person…if she pushed him away…he didn't dare to think of it.

'How do you feel?'

Diana looked up to her stepmom, who had laid a soothing hand on her shoulder. She bit on her bottom lip.

'Better, I guess. I had wanted to apologize for such a long time…' she sighed.

Her stepmom took a seat beside her at the breakfast table, taking her hands in his. 'Your father told me what happened to you. All I want you to know is that you'll be safe here', she smiled kindly.

Diana returned her smile faintly. She felt glad her stepmom was so nice and her dad too. Maybe now…she could have a peaceful family life.

Her smile faded, as she thought of Jonathan. A peaceful life? No…with him out on the streets…she would never feel at peace.

'Sweetheart…he won't come back -'

'He will.' Diana answered her fearfully; 'you don't know him like I do. He'll stop at nothing to get what he wants', she said quietly.

Her dad entered. 'If he does…I'll get the shotgun, you can be sure of that', he promised.

She looked up to her dad. He was willing to hurt Jonathan? 'Dad…please…' she pleaded.

Her father sat down with a sigh. 'I'm sorry, sweetheart. But you need to understand what he is capable of. You may have known him as a sweet person, but he's a criminal', her father spoke firmly.

She felt tears bead up in her eyes. It was true, but that didn't take away the fact it hurt her like crazy.

'Gabriel, you should tone it town. It's only been about a week since she got away from him', her stepmom stood up for her.

Diana twiddled with the ring around her finger. She couldn't bring herself to take it off. Part of her felt like it was betrayal to him, to take it off.

'I know, I know. But that crazy son of a bitch -'

'Please don't call him that', Diana cut her dad off.

'Sweetheart, he kidnapped you -'

'Just shut up, okay?! In case you didn't notice, I'm still pretty fucked up from all of this! I stayed with him for what seemed like forever. In that time, he cared more about me than you did when you left, so don't act like you're any better!' Diana snarled at him.

Her stepmom wanted to reach for her but she tore herself away from both of them. She took her coat, running out the door without another word.

Outside, she pulled her coat tightly around her. 'Stupid dad', she grumbled.

She rubbed her tearful eyes. What was she supposed to do? She felt so confused…

A sudden chill went down her spine. She shivered, looking around her. She felt like she was being watched.

She halted in her pace and breathed in deeply. She didn't need to second guess who was following her. It was Jonathan…he was close…

She dared to look around her. Where was he?

Sighing nervously, she went on walking. The unease never left her, but she tried her best to ignore it. She turned the corner, only to walk into something massive. Upon looking up, her eyes widened.

'What are you doing here?' she asked.

Cliffhanger! Who could it be?! Find out next time ;)

Lots of love,
