Chapter 29
"Hawk, the Myan council is asking for you." Supergirl stood in the doorway, costume torn and hair gritty from the battle.
Hawk looked up, ghost hands disappearing. "Why?" His voice was gruff, as Don's essence faded away.
"Apparently you saved the life of the leader of the Myan council."
"Big deal." Hawk got to his feet slowly, feeling an ache that had nothing to do with the battle. "So they want to see me now?"
"Uh, yeah."
"Fine. Where are they?"
"The council room. I'll take you."
Hawk nodded. "Fine. I'm coming." To be honest, he really didn't want to deal with any politicians; he didn't want to deal with anyone. But there was something inside him that wanted to be distracted, something that wanted something anything to think about besides the brother he adored who'd never existed. Anything was better than that.

"You wanted to see me?"
"You saved the life of Kyntan, leader of the council of Myan." Hawk recognized the slender Myan as the one the Terlan had cornered. The robed Myan. Huh. Wha'd ya know.
"I give you my thanks, Hawklan." Hawk tried not to wince. After all, the last time he'd heard that name was when Don had been dying in his arms.
"Is something the matter, Hawklan?"
"Huh? No, just… remembering."
"Something is missing. It hurts you."
Okay, so Myans were officially creepy now. Of course he did know telepathic heroes, so he supposed he couldn't really judge.
"Yeah. But I guess you could say I never had him."
"Please elaborate, Hawklan. If there is anything we can do to help you, we would be most eager to help. After all, we are indebted to you."
"There isn't anything you can do. He was never… real."
"Do we have permission to read into your mind, Hawklan?"
Hawk paused. He wasn't sure. But… they said they could help him… they couldn't… but… he could never live with himself if he was wrong. But hoping hurt so much. Hoping was the cruelest torture. There was nothing worse.
"Go ahead."
The Myan reached deep into Hank's mind, sensing the source of his agony. "I see. You are brave, Hawklan to bear such pain."
"Can you help me or not?"
"I am sorry, Hawklan. I do not believe I can."
