Liz sat on the floor with her eyes focused on the Brent.
"Ungag her. Let her have her last words," he said.
She suppressed her whimper as one of the guards ripped off the tape. "Thank you."
"Your grandfather had everything, and my father had nothing. He died in Nam because your grandfather wanted to be a fucking superhero. He wanted his team to be ones too."
"Your dad was a hero, and you know he was proud to serve under my grandfather. Remember the letter he sent home? You showed it to me when I came to visit grandpa at work."
"My father loved the Navy more than he loved his family. The Navy stole him, and your grandfather brain washed him. Your grandfather took my father, and now," the corners of his lips twisted up into a faint smile and his eyes radiated a sallow luminous light. "I'll take the only thing that is precious to him."
Liz sighed and shook her head."Then you're just as bad as him." "Don't try to talk me down," said Brent, raising the pistol.
"I'm not. But when you look at me do you see revenge or do you see the little girl who you let sit on your lap." She began to cry.
"Shut up!" he screamed, pulling her up by the hair and throwing her into the mantle. He smiled at her. "Any lasts word for your grandpa."
She smiled back. "Rot in hell!" she exclaimed. Her hand latched onto the fire poker, shoving it through his chest. She grabbed the gun and shot at the guards. She dropped to the ground when she saw Mack charge in and he shot the remaining guards.
She stood up when she heard the shots stop. She looked down at her bloodied coat and hysterically threw it into the fire, fumbling with the buttons. He ran over to her and held her, pushing her hair back. "Are you all right?" he asked, studying her. Her arm was grazed.
"Just take me home."
Tim came rushing in with five other cops. "You all right?" he asked Mack.
Mack took his coat off and put it over Liz. "She's fine. We just need to get her cleaned up."
"Are the planes still grounded?"
"Snows too thick up 'round Boston still. Only way people are traveling is by train and car."
"Can you book us two train tickets then?" she asked.
"Be happy to. I'll get my man on it now. Dias," he yelled walking away.
"Hey, hey," said Mack as Liz started to go limp.
"I stabbed him," she said.
"It's a little different then shooting someone, but you did what you had to. He was going to kill you." He put his arm around her waist.
"Sergeant," said a female trooper, holding out a pair of jogging pants and sweatshirt. "I thought she might like to change."
"Thank you," said Liz. She reached for the clothes, but Mack took them.
"Why do you keep getting yourself roughed up?" he asked, helping Liz walk out of the house towards the ambulance.
"I like to see how much I can take," she said with a smirk. "I'm so tired."
"Yea, I know, but don't go to sleep just yet. Let's let these guys see if you have a concussion or anything."
"Let's just go home," she whispered, her eyes drooping.
"Hey, hey," he said, tilting her chin up. "Stay awake. Open your eyes." He nodded to the EMT who checked Liz out for any signs of a concussion.
"She has a slight concussion but besides that I think she just needs a hot bath," said the female EMT. "Do you have a place to stay? There's not much around these parts."
"We have to catch a train pretty quick. We won't be spending the night here."
"If you want I can drive you back to my house, and she can shower, and I can give you a once over to make sure you're all right."
"That'd be great," said Mack.
Tim came over. "Found one train it'll get you to DC and then I arranged for a car to pick you up. Maggie, you taking good care of them?"
"Trying," said the EMT with a smile.
"Thanks, Tim," said Mack.
"I got an accident on the highway, so I have to go. But have a nice holiday. I'm glad you're all right," said Tim, smiling at Liz.
"Thank you," she said.
"Oh, your tickets are under Sergeant Martin. Maggie'll drive you to the station."
"Thanks for your help," said Mack, shaking Tim's hand.
"It's been fun," he said, smiling and running towards his car.
Mack climbed into the back of the ambulance and sat down on the bench. Liz was lying on the stretcher as Maggie bandaged some of her cuts and put some ointment on her wrists where there were abrasions. Maggie showed Liz to the shower and then walked back to Mack.
She cringed as she put some ointment on his face. "These look like they were nasty at one time. Do you have any more?"
"Just some on my back, but they're fine."
She smiled twisting her blonde hair back into a clip. "Let me look. Don't want them getting infected, do you?"
"Honestly they're fine."
"Just take off your shirt," she said, pulling the shirt over his head. She gingerly redressed his bandages. "Your job must be dangerous, huh?"
Mack felt her breath on the nape of his neck. "I'm just a clerk."
She smiled. "A sexy one at that."
Mack turned around. "Maggie, you're really beautiful, and I'm sure no guy has ever said this to you, but no."
She looked at him confused. "No?"
"I'm with Liz."
She laughed. "Don't you think she's a little young for you? What is she twenty?" She straddled his lap. "How about a real woman instead of a lusting college girl."
"Tempting but no," he said, pushing her off his lap. "I don't deserve that woman in there and the least I can do is be loyal to her." Mack stood up, pulling his shirt back on as Liz came out of the bathroom in the clothes the cop had given her. "Ready?"
"Yeah. Thank you for letting me use your shower."
"Don't mention it. Did you want to shower?" she asked Mack.
Mack shook his head. "Go ahead. The train doesn't leave for another hour," said Liz.
Mack sighed. "I'll be quick."
"Would you like something to drink?" asked Maggie, walking into the kitchen.
"Tea?"
"Chamomile, all right?"
"Fine."
They sat and talked, laughing. When Mack walked out he was surprised to find them smiling and laughing as if they were best friends.
"Ready?" asked Maggie, grabbing her purse.
"Yea. Thanks for the shower," said Mack.
"Anytime," said Maggie, holding the door open.
The car ride was uneventful, but Mack felt uneasy until they were on the train and it was headed towards DC.
"So you found yourself an admirer," said Liz, leaning against him.
He shook his head. "You heard?"
"Of course."
"But you two looked like best friends when I came out of the shower."
Liz smiled. "I am an accomplished actress besides who can blame her?"
He laughed, stroking her hair. "You weren't jealous?"
"I was until you turned her down. She tried every trick in the book though, didn't she?"
He nodded. "Shhh go to sleep. I'll wake you in a little bit."
The train was silent as it rocked through the rural and suburban territory. He quickly grabbed his cell phone, remembering he forgot to call Jonas. "Top, we're on our way. Yea, We'll be home by lunchtime I would think." He explained what had happened and Jonas rightly named it a Christmas miracle. "I'll call you when we're about an hour out. Tell the girls we'll be home. Thank you," he said. He hung up the phone and sighed, staring out the window. He fell asleep watching the snow fall in thick sheets, like a cloak of concealment it hid them from the rest of the world.
