Chapter 29: Okay
Jack POV:
"She's awake."
The words rang in my ears.
She was awake, she was finally awake. Elsa was awake, she was okay.
"She wants to see her husband right away." The nurse explained.
She's awake and she wants to see me.
Anna turned to me, "Go in first, we'll catch up with you in a second."
I nodded and ran to her hospital room as fast as my legs would take me. I stopped at the door, my hand on the door knob. I took a deep breath, I needed to prepare myself. She had been gone for too long, how would I react to seeing her? I slowly turned the door knob and opened it. I saw her, sitting up in bed, her face was red and puffy. I could tell she had been crying. I ran to her and crushed her in a tight embrace. Her cold hands grabbed on to the back of my shirt.
"I thought I'd never see you again..." I whispered as she cried on my shoulder.
"Do you remember what happened?" I asked her, pulling back from our embrace.
"I can't remember anything after the accident." She whimpered, her eyes pooling with tears. "I- I don't know what happened."
She placed her hand on her stomach and met my gaze. "What happened to Oliva..?"
I looked away from her as my eyes filled with tears.
"Is- Is she okay?" She asked, "Jack, what happened to our baby?"
I stayed quiet, I couldn't bring myself to say it.
"Jack, please…" I knew she was crying again. "Please tell me Olivia is okay."
I raised my head, meeting her gaze.
"I'm sorry, snowflake…" I mumbled, "I- I can't."
"What- What happened, Jack?" She asked me, "Please tell me what happened."
"We lost her…" I cried, "We lost our daughter in that accident."
Her face darkened, and her shoulders limped. Tears streamed down her face and she laid her face on my shoulder as she wept.
"Jack, please." She sobbed as I wrapped my arms around her. "Tell me that it isn't true, please."
I rubbed her black comfortingly and kissed her hair.
"Please!" She sobbed, "How can I live now that Olivia isn't here?"
"I want my baby!" She wept.
I turned and saw the door slowly open and saw Anna and Kristoff walked in. I let go of Elsa and got off the bed to make room for Anna. Anna gasped and ran to her, crushing her in a hug.
"Elsa, oh my God." She murmured, "You're okay, you're okay."
"I was so worried, Elsa." Anna confessed, "We all were."
She pulled back from their hug, "But you're okay now, and that's all that matters."
Elsa scrunched her nose angrily, "How can you say that?
"What do-?"
"Didn't you hear?" Elsa asked her sister, "I'm not a mother anymore."
"I couldn't bring my baby into this world, and I left Jack alone all this time, and-" She whimpered, "How can I live with myself, Anna?"
I couldn't bear to hear her talk like this, she didn't need this sorrow right after she wakes up.
"You couldn't have done anything." Anna assured her, "You were powerless."
"If you're going to blame anyone, Elsa, you should blame me." I began, "I shouldn't have taken you to Burgess that day. If it wasn't for me, none of this would've happened."
"None of you are at fault." Anna huffed, "Nobody here could've stopped the accident from happening."
"I'm so weak, Anna." She whispered, "I failed you, I failed Jack, and I failed Olivia."
Anna shook her head and embraced her sister, "You're not weak, Elsa. You're gonna get through this."
Anna turned her head towards me and gave me a reassuring look, "You and Elsa are both going to get through this."
Elsa bowed her head and tried her hardest to nod.
Anna turned back to face her sister and gave her another hug.
"Are you okay?" She asked
Elsa's eyes were misty but she nodded, she was obviously lying.
"Can we get you anything?" Anna asked, trying to cheer her sister up.
Elsa shook her head, "No, I'm okay."
She stayed like that for another half hour, she wouldn't talk except for the occasional "yes" or "no." After a while, Anna and Kristoff said their goodbyes, since they had children to attend to.
"I'll come back first thing tomorrow, I promise." Anna whispered as she hugged her sister one last time.
Elsa nodded and watched as her sister and brother-in-law left the room. I sat down on her hospital bed and held her hand tightly.
"Can you tell me what happened?" She asked, looking up to meet my gaze.
"Well," I began "I don't really remember much either, I just know what the doctors have told me."
She listened carefully, expressionless.
"Apparently we were hit by a drunk driver. His car crashed right into your side of the car. I fractured my knee and a couple of ribs, but everything else was minor." I murmured
I got up as Elsa moved to the other side of the bed, leaving a space for me to lay with her. She scooted closer to me and rested her head against my chest.
"But you…" I began, "Your injuries were far worse."
"You fractured your collar bone, a few rips and your leg. And you lost…" I paused, fighting the lump in my throat, "Our baby."
She nodded, I heard her start crying.
"The first few days weren't easy, I blamed myself most of the time." He explained, "And I kept having these strange dreams."
"Dreams?" She asked me
"Yeah, they were of you or of Olivia. You kept telling me that I would be alone, they were really strange."
"Did you ever think I wouldn't wake up?" She asked
I nodded, being honest.
"Of course I did but, I'm glad I was wrong." I mumbled.
"I'm sorry…" She cried, "I'm sorry I left you alone all this time."
"It's okay." I assured her, "It wasn't your fault, and I'm just glad you're okay now."
"I won't leave you ever again, Jack." She promised.
"Okay, Snowflake." I whispered.
We stayed like that for a while, wrapped in each other's embrace. After what seemed like hours, I got up.
"Where are you going?" Elsa asked.
"I'm going home." I explained, putting on my jacket.
"Please don't go Jack." She pleaded
I smiled and sat down on the bed again.
"You have to rest, it's been a long day."
"Jack, I've been sleeping for five months, a few more hours awake won't hurt me." She whimpered.
"I'll come back tomorrow, I promise." I told her, helping her get into bed.
She frowned but obliged. I smiled and pressed a kiss on her forehead.
"See you tomorrow, Snowflake."
"I love you, Jack." She sighed
I opened the door quietly, "Love you too, get some sleep."
I couldn't bear to leave her, not after we had been separated for five months.
