Here is CH 29 It's still more of a focus on Prentiss and Reid at this particular moment, so forgive me!
Thanks for the reviews! I believe you are a few hours ahead of me Sniper! I'm glad you like the different angle, and I hope so too!
Tannerose5 you're are totally right!
They had just entered Missouri, and Prentiss now understood why Reid was so restless. There was nothing to do! She tried talking to him, but he didn't want to communicate. She tried to read the car manual, but that was not enough to entertain her. She was at a loss. She sighed and rested her head against the head rest and closed her eyes. When she opened them, she realized that they were exiting the highway. She looked at Reid in surprise, most likely wondering why he would even pull off the highway. He was one for not stopping too often. She could see that he had a slight smirk, and she wondered what he was planning. It didn't look too good for her. She looked back at the road and saw that he was turning onto a dirt path. She wanted to question Reid, but he only sped up. After a good thirty minutes of driving deeper into the wooded and now swampy area, Spencer had stopped the car, putting it in park. She looked at him questioningly, but he only got out. Quickly she jumped out as well. She wanted to know why he was acting, but not speaking. She followed him, and soon they came across a huge wooden cabin. She looked at Reid questioningly.
"What is this?" She asked.
"A cabin," Reid smirked.
"Why are we here?" Prentiss added.
"Because I heard that it was haunted. Why not see for myself," Reid shrugged. Prentiss looked at him like he was crazy.
"We aren't going in there Dr. Reid, we will head back to the car and get on the road," Prentiss said trying to hold in the slight fear she had.
"Prentiss, do you really think something bad could happen?" Reid questioned raising an eyebrow.
"We both witnessed some pretty bad things Reid. How about we try not to end up like the victims we find," Prentiss said shaking her head.
"Are you afraid?" Reid asked softly, turning to look her dead in the eyes. Prentiss hated when he did that. He would ask those heavy, yet simple questions, with pure curiosity. He wasn't teasing her, or trying to force her in there. He was simply asking. Prentiss sighed. She had to admit she was scared. Losing her friend to the demons wasn't that fun, even though the demons were really unsubs. Even then, the possibility of ghosts and demons had frightened her greatly.
"Yeah," Prentiss admitted.
"Do you trust me?" Reid also questioned and it caught Prentiss off guard.
"I trust you," Prentiss said raising her eyebrows expectantly.
"Well, let's go in," Spencer smiled kindly. Prentiss wanted to protest, but Spencer had already headed straight for the cabin. Despite her fears, she wouldn't let him go in alone. She quickened her pace and followed closely behind him.
Once inside, they were greeted with a stale smell and dust filling their nostrils.
"Spencer," Prentiss whispered as he walked forward slightly.
"This was the home of a young lady named Sarah Lynn Harper. She was kind hearted, respectful, yet shy," Spencer informed grabbing her hand and slowly pulling her into the living room. Prentiss knew he wouldn't have made such a gesture if she wasn't frozen in apprehension. She was expecting something to jump out at her. Why was Reid making her go through this?
"She fell in love in a man who lived across the swamp," Reid said leading Prentiss towards the window and pointing towards a half visible cabin a good 400 feet away. Reid heard Prentiss swallow nervously.
"Every evening, they would see each other by looking through their windows. Both were too shy to visit. However, all that changed when she stopped showing up in this spot for their daily greet. Out of fear that she was hurt, the man who lived across the swamp came to visit." She followed as Spencer led her to a back door.
"When he found her, she was not okay. She was lying unconscious on the floor, and he was afraid that she was hurt. He picked her up and decided to take her to his cabin to watch over her. While he was here, he noticed this," Spencer showed Prentiss the obvious nail marks on the wall by the door. Her eyes widened slightly and she looked at him wanting him to finish the story.
"When she woke up, and saw that she was in his home, she panicked and attempted to run back to her own home. Remember, she loved him, but she still didn't know him. She was hiding something from him, and he wanted to know what it was. She ran away from him. The problem was that she was a bit clumsy, and she tripped, hitting her head on a rock and fell into the swamp. She died," Spencer said softly, taking Prentiss's hand and leading her towards the stairs.
"Her funeral was held in her home, and the viewing was up there," He said pointing up the stairs. "The man's name was Daniel Smith. He was the only one who viewed her body. He felt guilty. He never left this house," Spencer started walking up the stairs. She was slightly anxious, but she continued to follow him.
"He claimed that her spirit would come to him. Never speaking, but just show up and smile. The day, she spoke to him, was the last day anyone has ever heard from him. They don't know if he died, killed himself, or simply went on an expedition. He just disappeared. However, many people have come here and said they could see both of their spirits. Smiling happily at one another. Those who come here because they are hurting, are said to see Daniel hanging from a nearby tree. Daniel and Sarah can be angered, and many who anger them either run away after the first hour or are never heard from again," Spencer shrugged as they looked around the second floor. Prentiss swore she heard the floor creak to her right and instinctively moved closer to Reid.
"Do you want to know why I decided to bring us here?" Reid asked ignoring the creepy sounds. He wasn't as scared since he made sure not to come at night. He saw Prentiss nod from the corner of his eye, she was obviously still afraid from the creepy creaking sounds that surrounded them.
"Honestly, it was because of his guilt and how Sarah reacted when she found herself in his home," Reid admitted and Prentiss looked up at him in confusion. Was he referring to their previous conversation? Guilt? For what? Her mind was buzzing with questions.
"I wasn't trying to scare you. If that was the case, I would've went somewhere a bit more dramatic," Reid shrugged and grabbed her hand, walking back down the stairs. He refused to leave her alone in the little cabin since she admitted that she was afraid. Once down the stairs, Prentiss couldn't hold it in much longer, she had to question him.
"Reid what are you feeling guilty about? Was it about those two guys? Is there something you're not telling me?" She asked quickly. A part of her wished she had asked that once they were outside. The little back ground story had her apprehensive. Would she anger the ghost? She prayed that the story wasn't true. Reid looked at his feet, obviously debating with himself. Prentiss waited patiently. She knew that it was just how Reid was.
"A part of me wants to tell you, but the other part wants to just keep it in. I don't know why I can't just say something, I guess it's because-"
"You're afraid of what I, and the team, will think of you," Prentiss finished. Reid nodded still looking down. Prentiss understood. She had her secrets because she was unsure of what the team would think of her, and she would never be upfront and reveal them.
"I also figured you needed a break," Spencer added and Prentiss couldn't help but chuckle at the little side comment. Only Reid would say that.
"Well Reid, you know I am here for you. When you're ready, I'll listen. Thanks for the break, but next time, let's keep it within normal society. I do not have plans of hanging out with ghosts," Prentiss shuddered grabbing Reid's hands and heading out quickly. The place was giving her the creeps and she didn't miss the coldness of the house. She wasn't sure if it was her fear, or an actual ghost. She didn't want to find out either.
Once outside, she took the keys. She wanted to drive now. Mainly to keep herself distracted from his little story.
"You really shouldn't be afraid," Spencer said quietly.
"I don't know Reid," Prentiss said driving out of the dirt path.
"I wouldn't take you there if I thought something would truly happen. I was skeptical, but I still loved the emotions in the story," Reid shrugged.
Prentiss inwardly raised an eyebrow at the statement. Reid wasn't one for emotions. 'Doesn't mean he doesn't have or feel them,' She thought to herself.
"Was that the only reason?" Prentiss asked digging for a bit more.
"Well, I guess it was me trying to open up," Reid added and looked out of the window. He wished he was better at that. For now, he would just hold it in even longer.
"You made the attempt, which was a good step in the right direction. Just remember that when you're ready to tell me, I will be listening. I will not judge you," Prentiss reassured. She wanted him to know that. She wanted him to open up a bit more. It helped her learn how to help him. Patience was a key factor though.
"How about we stop and get some coffee," Prentiss offered and she noticed that Reid sat up a bit at the thought.
"I'll take that as a yes," She smiled as she kept a look out for any signs that would lead them to a Starbucks, or something relatively close.
"Thanks Em," Spencer said quietly and Prentiss nodded in acknowledgment.
"Anytime," She smiled.
I didn't plan on making it somewhat scary, but I figured visiting a creepy house may be kind of fun (and scary!) on a road trip!
Also wanted to show that he's trying to open up a bit more!
Anyways...
