Chapter 28: Is Trick playing Tricks?
"Home sweet home" Dyson mumbled while opening the heavy wooden door. The familiar scent filled his nostrils. He smiled a little. How much he had missed this place. Not many patrons were occupying the way station at this time of the day. Making a beeline to the bar he looked in the pleasantly surprised face of one of his oldest friends.
"Dyson. It is good to see you but what are you doing here in the city?"
Dyson smiled at the older man. "Good to see you too, but how about we discuss this a bit more... privately?"
"Of course. Let's go to my study" he motioned for the door in the back. Dyson followed suit and closed the door behind him. The smell of old wood and potions was calming him down. This place has always offered him safety whenever needed.
"So, what do you want to talk to me about?" Trick eventually asked when he sat down on an old chair. That was a good question... Why was he actually here? He became nervous all of a sudden. "It's... It's about Lauren"
Trick raised his eyebrows. "Lauren? You mean the girl you saved from the incubus?" He asked curiously.
"Yes.. Things have become a little.. complicated" Why did he feel like he was betraying Lauren in confiding in Trick? He was his oldest friend. Wise and fair he always knew what to do, didn't he? Despite the little warning bells inside of him he decided to tell the Blood king what had happened. While explaining everything Trick was completely quiet observing Dyson intently. His face was completely emotionless which made Dyson more nervous but he kept on talking. When he mentioned Lauren activating her powers the emotionless mask fell from the blood king and his look turned sinister... angry.
"I TOLD you.. No I ORDERED you to keep her powers a secret but you failed me Dyson. Not only didn't you protect her, you even told her? Are you insane?" Tricks voice vibrated with power. Dyson flinched. "I wasn't the one who told her about your powers. That was that dark Fae Tamsin" he tried to defend himself.
Trick's eyes widened in shock. "Tamsin..:" He mumbled. "That Valkyrie is still alive? I always thought Odin kept her as his trophy..." He scratched his chin. "This complicate things..."
"How? If you mean that she is Lauren's sister... Already heard that. Still no idea how that happened especially after I was told an ancient only can give birth once but why is she important?"
"You are partially right. An ancient that had gone through the ceremony can only give birth once to their heir that will be the next deus or dea, if they had been chosen by the fates. Not every ancient that goes through the ceremony will be a god. Only a few they say still exist... Tamsin was born before Minerva went through the ceremony to become the keeper of wisdom. She didn't inherit her mothers ancient genes. She is mere fae. Powerful but still fae."
"Why do you know all this?"
"Because she means bad news. She is the only one walking amongst the living outside the realm of the gods who knows how to enter it.. how to prepare for the temple..."
Dyson looked at his friend questioningly. Why was the old man so afraid?
"Before you ask... Minerva herself once told me when... when we were still friends."
"You were friends?" Why hadn't he seen her before then?
"For many centuries. While I still ruled... Isabeau and her had a deep connection." He smiled sadly. "But when my wife died... everything changed... She looked down at me full of hatred and disdain when I gave the dark king Aife... She begged... she threatened me not to do it..." Trick let out a deep sigh. Talking about his wife and daughter was always hurtful for him.
"But you still did..."
"For peace! You should know that today I regret my actions deeply. When I could turn back time I would have never given her up but what's done is done. I can't change that no matter how much I wish for it... Now the only thing that matters is to everything possible to stop the prophecy happening."
""Why? Why are you son hung up on stopping it?"
"Because everything we know would change!"
"Why would that be so bad?"
"Traditions would be forgotten. No more dark and light. No differences between fae or human. The world would turn in to chaos while being lead by two lovesick, power hungry, self righteous brats... Your.. Lauren? Might think she knows everything, can heal the sick but in the end it will be everyone's doom...Giving hope to those who believe just to crush them after all" Tricks voice was shaking. His hand clenched to fist, nails digging in his palm. Dyson could see that it was something else bothering his friend. He knew Trick was a stickler to tradition but why was he so afraid? As long as he knew him he was always fair and did what was best for everyone but he had the slight nagging feeling that there was something more... something personal.
"What is it you are not telling me?" He put a calming hand on Tricks shoulder who seemed lost in a memory.
"Minerva dishonored me. Broke my trust... I was blind for too long..." Flashes of his wife and Minerva were running through his head. He shook his head to get rid of the image. "She could have saved her... you know?" He now said with a sigh. "She was with Isabeau when she died... She had the power... the knowledge but she let her die!" he cried out but slumped further in to the chair. Even after such a long time the memory hurt like a fresh wound.
Dyson wondered what kind of special connection there was between Minerva and Isabeau.. Had it something to do with the prophecy? Was there... more? He didn't dare asking. Things were so complicated he had a real problem keeping up.
"She wasn't the angel people painted her... She was obsessed with that stupid prophecy. Not caring about the people she left behind... Playing people like they were playthings..." Dyson wasn't sure how much of it was really true. He struggled to believe the words that swung with hatred, that were blurred with emotions.
"She was crazy... she even kidnapped my pregnant daughter and hid her... I still have no idea where Aife is... If she gave birth... if the child even lives... I don't even want to imagine what kind of sick things she'd done to them... what she might told them..."
Dyson swallowed a big lump down. He didn't know that Trick had a grandchild... He understood why the Blood King felt the way he did but were those personal reasons enough to doom an entire prophecy meant to change the world in to a better place? He was always loyal to his king but something felt wrong. His inner wolf rebelled. It wanted to run in the light fae facility and protect the girl no matter what.
"With kidnapped... do you mean freed from the dark king?" Dyson asked.
"I doubt that Aife is free... All I'm saying is: Don't trust them. They act nice... caring but they aren't"
"In that I think my old friend you are wrong. You are biased with your past and emotions that you fail to see clearly."
"On the contrary. I think YOU are deluded. Keep away from the girl if you don't want to get hurt in the process and now I need some time for myself if you excuse me..." With that Trick stood up and went in to another room leaving a confused Dyson behind. The wolf shifter shook his head. What did he get himself in to?
He felt his phone vibrating but ignored it. He knew it had to be Rena for the 100th time. Dyson felt guilty for what he had done but he really didn't want the redhead to get more involved in this.
He sighed and made his way outside but stopped in the middle of his tracks when something caught his attention. Should he do it? If Trick would find out he'd be in trouble... but he didn't want to risk the Blood King interfering out of personal grudge. "I'm so going to hell for this..." he mumbled.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
"Tamsin what the hell are you doing here?" Lauren asked slowly leaving her cover behind Bo who still had her glowing eyes fixed on the Valkyrie. A little clumsy Tamsin got to her feet still feeling a little dizzy from her stunt.
"Well.. you've gone missing and I was kinda looking for you... looks like I've found you." She looked Lauren and Bo up and down and smirked. "Oh did I interrupt something?" she said and took a step closer to Lauren but immediately stopped when a very angry looking Bo blocked her way. Her muscles trembling, ready for action she practically growled at the blonde woman.
"Get away from my mate..." The brunettes voice sounded deeper and vibrated with power. Lauren's eyes widened in shock. Mate? Could it really be? Was Bo really her Pallas?
"Whoa, neat. Your human lover doesn't look that human to me anymore. Quite a surprise." Even when she looked not that caring or surprised on the outside she feels her heart stop for second. Almost invisible but not less powerful she felt the united aura surrounding the pair. She saw the glowing birthmarks... So it begins. Who would have thought that her lady love is actually the one?
Tamsin held her hands up in defeat. The girl seemed to have problems controlling her powers, no wonder if she had been oblivious about them all the time. Irresponsible keeping the information from her. She always hated the secrecy of her mother. She really hope to have time to talk to Lauren before hell would be breaking loose. After all she just broke in the light fae compound so she took another step in Laurens way but was abruptly stopped by a hand around her throat.
"Don't you DARE touching her." Overprotective bondmate. Exactly what I needed
"Bo" Lauren cried out. The brunette turned around eyes still glowing. "Let her go. Please"
"But... she..."
"Now, Bo!"
To the Valkyries surprise she felt the grip loosen around her throat until Bo let go completely. Tamsin coughed heavily refilling her lungs with much needed oxygen. The girl was strong. Stronger than any fae she had met before. She wasn't even fighting while the brunette was choking her. She wasn't sure what happened but she felt like she would do anything for Bo... It reminded her of... No... she couldn't be.
"Come on Babe. Look at me." Lauren cupped Bo's head in her hands. "Nobody wants to hurt me. I am fine. Look? Nothing happened..." She breathed and leaned her head forehead against Bo's. It seemed to work because the brunette seemed to calm down. Eyes turned in to their usual brown while tense muscles relaxed.
"Lauren? What... What happened?" Bo said confused. "What is Tamsin doing here and why is the window broken?"The brunette really seemed a little lost. Lauren pressed a loving kiss to Bo's temple and pulled her in a warm hug. She didn't know why but she just had to feel the other girl in her arms.
"Actually I don't know myself.." Lauren eventually admitted.
"The... fuck? Who played mission impossible here?"
"Kenzi?" Lauren looked a little unbelieving at her friend. "How... are you ok?"
"She is fine. Quirky little girl but nice." Dr. Everett said smiling entering the room. "Tamsin?"
"Hey Doc... Long time no see..."
"You know each other? Oh man.. I... my head is kinda spinning.."
"Mine too.. Somebody care to explain? I mean like big time? I have no FUCKING idea what is going on right now. Suddenly there is this world with some weird powers and stuff, someone flying through windows and everyone acts like it's normal." Bo had enough. "I hate being lied to by everyone. I think I deserve some answers."
"I always told them its bad to keep secrets but noooooo why would anybody ever listen to the Valkyrie?"
"I think I have to agree... Secrets are making all this worse..."
"Whoa wolfman. Did you sniff me out or how did you find us?"
"Dy... Dyson? How.. where.. what..." That was just to much chaos for Lauren and she passed out.
"Lo!" Bo cried and gently put her girlfriend down on the bed. "Out! All of you. When she wakes up you all better have some answers."
"Yeah well.. I just can't walk freely around light fae territory..." Tamsin said. Bo turned her eyes in to slits facing the Valkyrie.
"Alright alright... Doc can you cover for me?" Doctor Everett nodded at that. "Lauren needs some more rest. You can... explain everything to her tomorrow." She addressed Tamsin. "And you Dyson... I'm surprised to see you here after what happened with the ash."
Dyson blushed at that. "I need to..."
"Out... NOW" Bo growled. As much as she craved for answers... keeping Lauren save was more important. It was like her instincts took over.
"You really don't want the doc check on her, Bobo?" Kenzi asked.
"Lauren is fine. Just exhausted. I can feel that she is OK"
"You heard the girl. All of you out" Kenzi pointed at the door.
"You too Kenz"
"But..."
"No but... Out"
Kenzi poke out her tongue at Bo but eventually moved out of the room. Sighing Bo got in to bed next to Lauren. Pulling her close she wrapped her in her arms, softly kissing her head. "What surprises and secrets are you harboring my love? What is happening to me?" Bo felt a little lost but as long as she was close to Lauren all her fears and questions didn't matter.
