Chapter 29

Katniss P.O.V

I'm awoken by the sound on my ringtone. I roll out of Peeta's arms, moaning when I realise the caller is Haymitch. I answer the phone and quietly walk out of the room. Once I'm outside I turn my attention to the phone.

"What?" I hiss into the phone.

"Well somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed!" Haymitch exclaims through the phone. I growl.

"Well you rang me at four in the morning, what do you expect?" I ask angrily.

"Maybe a hello Haymitch how are you today? Have you heard of your engagement? Yes, lovely isn't it," he says sarcastically.

"I'm not in the mood Haymitch," I say.

"I can tell," he says.

"What do you want?" I ask, getting more irritated with him by the second.

"I wanted to ask you a question," he says.

"Get on with it," I say.

"Are you alone?" he asks, suddenly serious.

"Yes," I say.

"Is Peeta around?" he asks.

"He's in the other room," I say.

"Okay, go outside," he says.

"Why?" I ask.

"Just do it," he demands.

I do as I'm told and soon enough I'm standing outside facing the woods of District 12. "Okay, I'm outside. What are you going to ask?"

"I'm going to ask this directly because I don't know if there is any other way I can do it," he says.

"Go ahead," I say slowly.

He takes a deep breath. "Are you pregnant with Peetas child?" he asks suddenly.

I almost drop the phone. I stare into the distance, horrified.

"Katniss?" Haymitch asks in a strangely gentle tone.

"Wha- How- Who-?" I stutter.

"So it's true," he states.

"Haymitch," I sigh. "Why?"

"I'm going to help you Katniss," he says rather nicely.

"You- you are?" I ask, surprised.

"Yes, is it really that hard for you to imagine?" he asks.

I reply with silence.

"Have you told Peeta?" he asks.

"I only found out yesterday," I say with a frown.

"Obviously not then," Haymitch sighs. "Katniss, Peeta loves you, he needs to know."

"I will tell him when I'm ready," I say defensively.

"And when will you be ready?" Haymitch asks.

And I answer him with silence, again.

"You need to tell him," Haymitch sighs after a while.

I frown, "Haymitch, how did you find out?" I ask.

"Well Peeta rung me last night, he told me the events of the whole day, from the proposal to the doctors to the tantrum that you had," he explains.

"It was not a tantrum," I say sourly.

"Can you let me finish?" Haymitch asks. "After he hung up I rang Dr Aralius and eventually got the whole story out of him. A girl doesn't act like that for nothing."

"Your not going to tell him, are you?" I ask, rather worried.

"No, I'm leaving that up to you. But just a warning Katniss, Finnick may know as well…" he says trailing off.'

"How!?" I exclaim.

"Well he was with me when Peeta called, he called both of us. And we both found out. Just a friendly warning…" he says.

I place my hand to my forehead.

"But he swore not to tell," Haymitch reassures.

I groan, "that doesn't make me feel much better."

"Look, Katniss, just tell him. He will be thrilled. I've known him for a long time and he has been looking for someone to settle down with and start a family with. He has been waiting for this, he is prepared. Trust me," he says gently.

"I know," I say in a defeated tone.

"Then why are you so scared?" he asks.

"I'm not scared because of him, it has nothing to do with him. It's me Haymitch, it always has been and it always will be," I explain.

"Katniss you've got to do it, you can't let him find out from the media," Haymitch warns.

"I know! Lay off! I told you I would! Just let me do it in my own time!" I yell into the phone and then I hang up.

"What are you doing in your own time?" I hear Peeta say behind me. I freeze before slowly turning and smiling at him.

"Did I wake you?" I ask gently as I move towards him.

"No," he says with a yawn. "The caller woke me. Who was it anyway?"

"Haymitch," I say as I roll my eyes.

Now he is the one who freezes. "Wha- what did he say, to you?" he asks cautiously.

"I know you rang him last night," I say with a bored tone.

"Katniss I'm-" he starts.

"You've got to stop with saying sorry!" I laugh. "You did nothing wrong, it's fine."

Relief floods his features.

"Come on, we need to organise this New Year's Eve party," I say with a smile.

5 DAYS LATER

The next few days is a struggle, I struggle to contain myself and hide the pregnancy from Peeta, but I manage. I know I need to tell him, maybe tonight I will. Maybe.

Haymitch is the first to arrive at the party, he shows up at six on the dot. Peeta gives him a slap on the back and whilst he isn't looking Haymitch raises his eyebrows at me in question. I shake my head in answer.

Finnick and Annie show up together at six-thirty and they seem to be holding hands. I knew. Annie rung me yesterday and told me the news. According to her they went to the movies and during a climax Finnick kissed her. I couldn't help laughing, it was too cliché. She also brang up the pregnancy, that stopped me laughing. Finnick told her obviously, I didn't need to ask. Just like Haymitch she told me that I needed to tell Peeta, before the media found out. She told me if I held off much longer things were bound to get bad. I knew she was right, that's why I've decided to tell Peeta, tonight.

A few of Peetas friends arrive that I don't know and I'm introduced as 'my wife, Katniss,' his friends would raise their eyebrows and give him a playful shove and congratulate the two of us. I just smile and go along with it. That is all I really can do.

It about seven when Prim arrives, looking beautiful as always in a bright blue cocktail dress and her hair curled and out around her shoulders. Rue stands next to her in a matching outfit except her colour is a lime green. The both hug me and skip past me in a flurry of excitement. Prim hugs Peeta tightly and soon enough they are deep in conversation.

I sigh deeply and make my way over to Finnick and Annie who are both watching me carefully.

"Hey," Annie says softly. "How are you doing?"

"I'm fine," I say.

"How are you coping?" Finnick asks.

I shrug, "okay, I guess."

Finnick goes to speak when I hear my name shouted across the room. Haymitch. He's already drunk. It isn't even nine o'clock yet. I frown at him.

"Katniss!" he exclaims.

"What?" I ask as I walk over to him.

"DO YOU WANT A DRINK?" he shouts. Even though I'm standing right beside him he still thinks it's necessary to yell.

"No Haymitch, I don't want to end up like you," I say with my arms crossed.

He laughs, "the only reason you are saying that is because you can't drink."

I freeze. So does Finnick and Annie who stand behind me. Peeta approaches. I swallow hard.

"Why can't she drink? She can if she wants," he says looking at Haymitch.

"Because she's-" Haymitch starts.

"Haymitch!" Finnick suddenly exclaims. "I just remembered that I got some scotch in my car. Come with me to get it."

I find myself sighing in relief. Thank god for Finnick, I never thought I would think this. I watch as Annie, Finnick and Haymitch walk away, Finnick looks over his shoulder at me, his look tells me that now is the time. My look tells him thank you.

"What was that all about?" Peeta asks looking back at me with a confused expression.

"Peeta," I say his name with a sense of confidence. Now is the right time. Now is the only time. If I don't tell him now he will find out from someone else.

"Yes Katniss?" his eyes are wide with curiosity. My heart seems to melt just by looking at him, but I keep it together.

"There is something I have to tell you," I say as firmly as possible.
