Paul Blofis wasn't dumb. When he met Sally Jackson's son, he knew something was different about him. He looked like a normal kid, black hair, green eyes, nothing out of the ordinary. But he was hardened. Only fourteen years old, and his eyes looked like those of a soldier, or an old man, not a freshman in high school. He was a nice enough kid- he was expecting a lot worse when Sally told him how many schools Percy had been expelled from.
"It's not his fault," she would argue.
And after meeting Percy, Paul couldn't help but to agree. Percy was ADHD and dyslexic, hard enough to deal with by themselves, but together had to be miserable. But even with those war veteran-like eyes, he was always joking around, always talking and laughing.
When he learned that Percy was a demigod, he probably wasn't as surprised as he should've been. It took a moment to sink in, and he was shocked to find out that the Greek gods were still running around on Earth.
But it made sense. The sudden disappearances, the eyes, the random scars. He was a son of Poseidon, the child of the sea. Percy had demonstrated his water based talents with a cup of water, making the water take the form of a star.
Then he met Annabeth. Annabeth, Percy told him, was a daughter of the goddess Athena. His first impression of the girl was that she was scary as hell. She had a terrifying death glare and even Percy seemed intimidated by her.
But there was something else going on with the two demigods. He had asked Sally if there was something between them, and Sally had grinned at him.
"Oh, you caught on? Aren't they just adorable?"
Paul raised an eyebrow, "I don't know about adorable, but they're something. Is Annabeth always that scary?"
"Scary? Annabeth's sweet! Most levelheaded demigod I've ever met…"
It wasn't surprising when a few months later, after the Battle of Manhattan and Percy's birthday, Sally had dropped the bomb on Paul.
He walked into the apartment, and was immediately assaulted by Sally.
"They're dating!" she squealed.
Paul had no idea what she was talking about. "What?"
Sally looked ecstatic, "Percy and Annabeth, they're finally dating!"
"Seriously? When did that happen?"
Sally was smiling ear to ear, "Percy's birthday, right after the battle."
The first time Paul saw Annabeth and Percy together as a couple, was in the middle of September. Annabeth often would come over to their house on the weekends, and the first time she did, Paul got to see his stepson's cheeks take on multiple shades of embarrassed.
Percy walked through the door, making his usual racket as he did. "Mom!" he called. "I'm home!"
He had taken Paul's old Prius to Annabeth's boarding school to pick her up and then taken her out to eat at some burger joint that they liked. Paul and Sally were kicked back in the living room, Paul grading papers absentmindedly as he watched the news and Sally working on her next novel.
Percy and Annabeth walked into the room, their hands loosely intertwined and swinging between them as they walked. "Hello Sally, Mr. Blofis," Annabeth said, waving at them.
Sally subtly winked at Paul, "Hey guys. How was your date?"
Percy was blushing, "Fine," he stammered.
It turned out that even though they were dating, Percy and Annabeth argued as much as ever. For the rest of the evening, they acted normal, except that Annabeth's slaps were a little gentler, and her eyes a little softer when she teased the son of Poseidon.
Paul had been assigned to take the daughter of Athena home, since Percy had homework to do, and Sally was cleaning up dinner.
"Bye Seaweed Brain," she said before they left.
Percy had tilted his head down and captured her lips in a soft kiss, "Bye."
Paul averted his eyes, giving his stepson and his girlfriend some privacy. A moment later, Annabeth announced that she was ready, her cheeks flushed and lips pink.
Percy had finally found some bliss, even if it did come in the form of the dramatic, terrifying daughter of the war goddess.
