Harry Potter: World at War
Chapter 29: The Siege of Gringotts

"Death Eaters?" Harry repeated, staring at the sword clenched in Ragnok's fist. "In Gringotts?"

Ragnok nodded grimly. "In the lobby. My wards tell me that they've already killed most of the warriors there."

"Why are they here?" Bill asked. "They aren't stupid. This is a suicide mission."

"It's because of Bellatrix." Harry said, suddenly realizing.

"Probably." Narcissa agreed, her hand on her wand. "The Dark Lord thinks that she hid the container in her Gringotts vault. They must be here to try and retrieve it."

"He must still be too injured to make an appearance then." Harry reasoned. "Otherwise he wouldn't risk anyone else on this mission."

"You know Bellatrix Lestrange?" Bill asked, his eyes narrowing. "Narcissa Black is one thing, we know she's turned away from the Dark Lord. But Lestrange?"

"I'll explain everything." Harry promised. "But let's get through this first."

"While I am sure this conversation gives us a delightful insight into the Dark Lord's mind, I must begin mounting a defense." Ragnok growled.

"My wand is yours Director." Bill said. "Where would you like me?"

"They are situated in the entrance hall." Ragnok said. "In order to stop this attack, we will have to eliminate them at the source. Take no prisoners."

"Pansy!" Harry realized. "She's in the lobby!"

"She is not a Gringotts goblin," Ragnok said. "So, I have no way of telling how injured she may be."

"She's clever." Harry said firmly. "She'll be fine. But I have to get to her."

"Ready your wand Lord Black." Ragnok said menacingly, his fangs bared. "Tonight, blood will be shed in Gringotts again."

Harry drew his wand. "What's the fastest route back to the lobby?"

"Back the way we came." Ragnok said, gesturing with his sword. "But I am sure that they have sealed the doors."

"Do we have another option then?" Harry asked.

"We can go through the vault tunnels." Bill suggested. "If they're trying to steal from one of the vaults, they will have either taken a cart or blasted a new entrance. Either way, the tunnels will lead us back to the lobby."

"The carts can only be driven by a Gringotts goblin." Ragnok said, wincing. "Damn, we lost another guard, this time in one of the tunnels. You were right, they are after something."

"How many fighters do we have left?" Narcissa asked.

"At this hour?" Ragnok said rhetorically. "Most of them have already returned home. And the wards will prevent them from returning while we are under siege. I'd say there are less than twenty warriors left spread throughout the bank. Not counting ourselves."

"In that case, we are out of time." Harry said. "Bill, lead the way."

"I apologize in advance for the wall." Bill said, nodding toward Ragnok. "Expulso!"

Harry turned away to shield his face as a chunk of the far wall exploded, showering them in a spray of dust and rubble.

"This is tunnel 942 N." Ragnok said, leading Harry and the others through the destroyed wall. "We're only a thousand meters underground, but we have the element of surprise on our side. I'll send the remaining guards to intercept the Death Eaters in the tunnels. We will return to the surface and rescue Pansy before joining them."

"If the Death Eaters are on foot, how long will it take them to reach the Lestrange vault?" Harry asked, following Ragnok up the steep slope of the dark tunnel.

"The Lestranges are some of our oldest clients." Ragnok said, pocketing his communicator. "Their vault is in the very depths of Gringotts, even on our carts, it would take close to ten minutes to reach. On foot. . .at least an hour or two, assuming they know the fastest route."

"Let's assume they do." Bill said. "I know that a good chunk of the people I've worked with over the years would happily give up a map of the vaults for a sack of Galleons. Treasure-hunters aren't exactly the most trustworthy bunch."

Ragnok scowled. "Then we only have a few hours, if that." The goblin sped up, somehow outpacing Harry and the others despite his small stature.

"Where does this tunnel come out at?" Narcissa asked, already starting to pant.

"It's about three hundred meters until we connect with tunnel 716 W." Ragnok said. "We'll follow that tunnel to 471 N, and then take the—"

"Never mind," Narcissa said, cutting Ragnok off. "I'll just keep following you."

Bill laughed. "Don't worry Narcissa, goblins have an innate sense of direction and mapping. Most humans wouldn't be able to keep track of where anything is down here without a map."

"Hopefully that will slow the Death Eaters down then." Narcissa said, her hand resting on the hilt of her wand.

Harry gripped his wand tighter, trying to block out their conversation. They needed to get back to Pansy, not waste time talking about directions.

Ragnok held his hand up. "Wait." He gestured with his sword. "I can hear Death Eaters talking. Through that wall."

"Ignore them." Harry said firmly. "We need to get up to the surface and rescue Pansy first. Then we can worry about the Death Eaters."

"From the surface we can also take one of the carts down through the tunnels." Bill pointed out. "We'll still be able to overtake them before they reach the vault."

"As much as I hate to let Death Eaters walk through Gringotts, you make a good point." Ragnok admitted, lowering his sword. "Let's keep moving then."

"How long until the rest of your guards converge on the Death Eaters?" Narcissa asked as they took off up the steep tunnel again.

"The first group will reach the Death Eaters in less than twenty minutes." Ragnok said. "The second one shortly after that."

"And how long until we reach the surface?"

"Probably fifteen minutes." Ragnok said, leading them down a side tunnel. "Less if we're lucky."

"How are things going in the lobby?" Harry asked, fearing the answer.

"Impossible to say." Ragnok grunted. "Most of the goblins that were stationed in the lobby have already been killed, and the few that are left are likely prisoners, grievously injured, or traitors."

Harry hesitated, his heart sinking. Pansy could already be dead or injured. Her face flashed in his mind's eye, her soft face framed by elegant raven hair, her hazel eyes shining with mirth.

Ragnok placed a clawed hand on Harry's arm. "I promise you Harry, the goblins that were in the lobby will do everything in their power to protect her."

"She's clever," Harry said again, trying to convince himself. "I'm sure she's fine."

"Exactly." Ragnok agreed, patting Harry's arm. "Now let's get to her before she beats all of the Death Eaters by herself."

Harry laughed despite himself. "She might do it anyway, just to spite us."

Ragnok smiled warmly and continued up the sloping tunnel. "We're almost out of the tunnels. We have one more turn, and then it's a straight shot into the lobby."

"Do we have a plan?" Narcissa asked.

"Death Eaters are lazy." Harry said confidently, following Ragnok around another bend in the tunnel. "They rely on shields to protect themselves, and will only dodge as a last resort."

Bill nodded in agreement. "We need to focus on breaking their ranks while dodging any curses. No matter what spell you see, assume it's the Killing curse and get the hell out of there."

"Use the most powerful spells you can muster and area-of-effect curses." Harry added. "Shields will break under enough pressure, and the standard Protego won't defend against splash damage."

"And wizard spells are notoriously poor at blocking goblin-made steel." Ragnok added, his sword glinting in the dim light of the tunnel.

"Should we go in under Disillusionment?" Narcissa suggested. "That way we can try and keep the element of surprise?"

"Due to the war, Gringotts has installed the Thief's Downfall at the entrance to the tunnels." Ragnok explained. "It's a security measure, but one that will work against us here."

"Thief's Downfall detects and removes concealment and mind-altering enchantments from someone who passes through it." Bill explained. "It will cancel Polyjuice, lift the Imperius, and even neutralize love potions."

"So, surprise is out of the question." Narcissa mused, as Ragnok led them up another steep tunnel.

"Not completely." Ragnok corrected. "It took most of the walk up here, but I managed to add you three to the anti-Apparition wards. So, you will be able to Apparate in and attack from above."

Harry shook his head. "It's too risky. We don't know how the Death Eaters are situated. An aerial assault is asking for us to accidentally kill some of our allies."

"We face the same risks with a ground assault." Bill pointed out. "But you make a good point. Assuming that the Death Eaters have at least a few captives, we will have to be much more careful."

Ragnok came to a stop and gestured at a waterfall ahead. "There's the Thief's Downfall. The Death Eaters are just on the other side."

"The Death Eaters won't be expecting us." Narcissa said. "Pansy was the only human upstairs when they came in. The most resistance they'll expect is goblin warriors."

"The element of surprise won't help us for long." Bill said. "Death Eaters are usually better at dueling than they are at fighting against swords and spears."

"I know," Narcissa agreed. "But that's not what I am saying. You three can go on ahead and get their attention, and then once the Death Eaters are distracted, I can Apparate in and try to get as many of our people out as I can."

"Good plan," Harry said. "Once spells start flying around, anyone too injured to dodge is going to be a sitting duck."

"Very well then," Ragnok said. "Narcissa, wait until you have the cover of spellfire to mask your Apparition, and then go. The three of us will be able to handle Death Eaters."

"Once we get past the Thief's Downfall, we are in a fight for our lives." Bill reminded them. "Aim to kill and don't stop moving."

Harry nodded firmly, "I'll go in first; seeing me should be distraction enough for you two to get the drop on them."

Without waiting for a response, Harry quickly made his way up the last slope of the tunnel and ducked through the Thief's Downfall. The icy water washed over him, and then he was through.

Crouching low, Harry surveyed the grand entrance hall: at least a dozen masked Death Eaters milled around the room, and several more were clustered around a small group of prisoners in one corner. He could vaguely make out the shine of Pansy's black hair, surrounded by the remaining goblins. Even captured they were still trying to protect her.

Raising his wand, Harry took careful aim at the massive chandelier dominating the center of the lobby. "Fulguri!"

CRACK! A white bolt of lightning left the tip of his wand, striking the center of the chandelier, shattering it and sending shards of glass flying in all directions.

Immediately, the room erupted into chaos, and Harry dove to the side, flinging a Piercer at the back of a Death Eater, drilling a ragged hole through the base of his skull.

"It's Potter!"

Harry swore softly. He had hoped to land a few more spells before he was identified.

"The Dark Lord wants him alive!" A Death Eater shouted. "Do not kill Potter!"

"Odrezat!"

The cerulean arc of the Slovakian Cutting curse sped across the room, neatly bisecting the Death Eater at the waist.

"Clever use of the chandelier Harry!" Bill shouted, firing off another Cutter that dissipated against a Death Eater's shield.

"I learned from the best!" Harry laughed, ducking below another curse.

Ragnok rushed past Harry, his sword in hand. With a pair of quick strikes from Ragnok's sword, the Death Eater's shield shattered and he stumbled backward, clutching at his slashed throat.

"Ossum Fracturum!" Harry shouted, spinning his wand in a half-circle and jabbing it toward another Death Eater. A gray jet of light crackling with black lightning struck the Death Eater's mask, shattering it and throwing the Death Eater to the floor.

Spinning around, Harry fired off another Piercer, the yellow beam lancing through the slit in a Death Eater mask.

"Get down Harry!" Bill shouted, twirling his wand.

Harry threw himself to the side, letting Bill's spell fly overhead. The crimson curse detonated against the marble floor, throwing shards of stone clattering across the room.

Rolling back to his feet, Harry fired off a pair of Reductors at the fallen Death Eaters, and surveyed the destroyed room. "That's the last of them."

Ragnok straightened up and sheathed his sword. "Thank you for your assistance Lord Black, Mr. Weasley."

"Where are the captives?" Bill asked, slipping his wand back into his belt holster.

"I directed Madam Black to Apparate the injured goblins back to the dining hall." Ragnok said.

"What about Pansy?" Harry asked, scanning the room again.

"She's there too." Narcissa said, coming up behind him. "She's alive—a little worse for wear, but alive."

Harry breathed a sigh of relief. "Then let's get down there."

Ragnok shook his head. "We can't, we need to press our advantage and stop the Death Eaters before they reach the Lestrange vault."

"It will only take us a second to Apparate down and check on her." Harry argued.

"Pansy's arm was hit by a Bone-Exploding curse, but she's otherwise fine." Narcissa said. "I can't mend broken bones, but once we stop the Death Eaters, we can take her to St. Mungo's."

Bill placed a hand on Harry's shoulder. "It will be okay; Pansy's condition isn't going to worsen before we intercept the Death Eaters."

"And if the Death Eaters manage to reach the Lestrange vault, then your mission against the Dark Lord will be compromised." Ragnok added. "If he creates any more containers, it may not be possible to track them all down."

Harry sighed. "We don't have much of a choice then."

"The longer we spend here, the more likely it is that the Death Eaters will reach the vaults." Narcissa said. "Why don't you three meet up with the goblins in the tunnels, and I will go back to help take care of the wounded."

"I have already summoned a goblin healer to take my injured warriors back to their homes." Ragnok said. "Take Pansy to St. Mungo's Madam Black. The three of us will be able to handle the Death Eaters."

"Let's get moving," Harry interrupted, impatiently drumming his fingers on his torn dress robes. "We don't have much more time to waste chatting."

Narcissa vanished with a CRACK, and Ragnok led Harry and Bill across the ravaged lobby. "We still have a cart up here, so we'll be able to get down to the Lestrange vault in around ten minutes."

"Can't we Apparate?" Harry asked.

"The wards in the lower vaults are much more stringent than the ones near the surface." Bill explained. "Even Director Ragnok couldn't add us to the wards."

Ragnok nodded, opening the door to the cart room. "Correct Mr. Weasley. Beyond that however, goblins cannot Apparate. We have our own methods of travel, and we are able to use the Floo network, but a human cannot Side-Along Apparate a goblin, and our magic does not have an equivalent."

"Then the carts are the best option." Harry agreed. "Unless the Death Eaters destroyed the tracks."

"Not possible." Bill said. "I was here when the wards on the tracks were upgraded a few years ago. The team of warders had Dumbledore come in and try to break their enchantments, but even he couldn't scratch the tracks."

Ragnok climbed into the front cart and sat in the driver's chair. "Get in. I'll have to focus on steering, but once we get close to the Death Eaters, you two will need to hold them off from the cart. The tracks may be indestructible, but the carts are not."

Harry stepped into the cart and took a seat behind Ragnok. He experimentally twisted in his chair, and slipped his wand back into his sleeve. "I'll be able to aim fine. Bill?"

Bill nodded, surveying the tunnel. "I have plenty of room to move."

"Then let's go." Ragnok said, pulling a lever next to his chair.

The cart took off, shooting down the steep tracks, pressing Harry and the others into the back of their seats. Harry took shallow breaths, trying to alleviate the pressure on his chest.

"This is as fast as the carts go," Ragnok shouted over his shoulder, his voice distorted by the air rushing by. "We'll be near the Lestrange vault soon!"

Bill carefully drew his wand from his holster and waved it, his incantation lost to the wind.

Immediately, the deafening sound of air rushing past vanished, and Harry slumped forward in his chair.

"Thank you Bill." Harry gasped, sucking in huge gulps of air. "I couldn't breathe."

Bill nodded sharply, his lips moving in a constant chant, the cords in his neck standing out from the strain.

"Bill created a localized ward tied to the cart." Ragnok explained. "It's easy enough to set up, but he has to keep pumping magic into the spell to keep it from collapsing in on itself."

The cart took a sharp left turn, plummeting even deeper into bowels of Gringotts.

Ragnok suddenly slammed his fist onto the dash of the cart, swearing in Gobbledygook. "That was the last of them."

"The Death Eaters?" Harry asked, turning to look at Ragnok.

Ragnok shook his head sadly. "The goblins. The Death Eaters just killed the last of my guards that were still here. The three of us are all that remain to combat the Death Eaters."

"How many are left?" Harry asked, peering over Ragnok's shoulder into the darkness of the tunnels.

"Impossible to say. I'm sure that there are still a sizeable number." Ragnok said, adjusting the lever beside him to slow the cart down. "You can drop the ward Bill. You'll need your wand soon."

Bill's rhythmic chanting ceased, and he relaxed into his chair, panting heavily. "How much longer?"

"Two minutes." Ragnok said, turning the cart again. "Maybe less. But the Death Eaters were still a fair distance away when they killed the last goblin, so we should still beat them to the vault."

Harry heard a powerful roar directly in front of them, and Ragnok spat out another Gobbledygook curse. "The Death Eaters must have released the Ironbelly!"

"How is that possible?" Harry shouted, looking over Ragnok's shoulder again. "I thought they were down another tunnel!"

"They must have split up at some point." Bill said. "Director, stop the cart. We will have to continue on foot."

With the screech of grinding metal, the cart came to a quick stop, and they quickly scrambled out.

"You fought a dragon Harry," Bill quipped. "Any advice for the two of us?"

"Yeah, don't do it." Harry laughed grimly. "If this is anything like the Horntail at the Tournament, we are in for one hell of a fight. Aim for the eyes and avoid the tail."

"Don't bother," Ragnok said, pulling a large leather bag from the cart. "The dragon will flee from the sound of the Clankers."

"Clankers?" Harry asked, scanning the tunnel before him.

Ragnok pulled out a small metal instrument from the bag and shook it, the loud metallic sound echoing in the confines of the tunnel. "These are the Clankers."

Harry eyed the metal bell warily. He doubted that the Clankers would be able to do much against a dragon.

"I think the Ironbelly is just around this corner." Ragnok said, shaking the Clankers again. "I will drive it back with the Clankers, and then we can wait at the Lestrange vault for the Death Eaters."

The Ukrainian Ironbelly let out another powerful roar, shaking the very walls of the tunnels, and Harry shuddered, images of the Horntail flashing in his mind's eye.

"The two of us will cast a Flame-Freezing ward." Bill said, nodding at Ragnok. "As long as you don't get close enough for the dragon to get hit by its tail, we'll be able to hold it off long enough for the Clankers to take effect."

Harry followed Ragnok and Bill around the bend in the tunnel. A gigantic dragon dominated the center of the tunnel, blocking passage. In the dim light of the tunnels, Harry could see the deep scars lining the dragon's snout, and the milky blindness in its eyes. With another defiant roar, the Ironbelly spat a jet of fire that burned against the stone roof of the tunnel, and it reared back, revealing the heavy shackles around its legs, and broken lengths of chain trailing behind.

With a sinking feeling, Harry thought he knew how the dragon had been trained to fear the Clankers.

Holding the Clankers above his head, Ragnok shook them, the sharp sound ringing in the tunnel once more.

The Ironbelly didn't respond, loosing another jet of flame against the ceiling. As the dragon's great silver head turned, Harry saw the candlelight glint off of a line of dark blood running along it scales.

"It's deaf!" Harry shouted, backpedaling. "The Death Eaters must have deafened before they released it!"

"Deaf, blind and hardly able to smell." Ragnok grunted, throwing the Clankers aside and drawing his sword. "It's no wonder the beast wants to fight today."

"Percutio!" Bill shouted, twirling his wand. The yellow light sped across the room, drilling into the dragon's milky eye.

With another angry roar, the dragon turned to face Bill, his broad wings spreading out and filling the tunnel.

"Bad move!" Harry yelled, casting a Flame-Freezing charm on Bill. "A dragon's brain is almost as magically resistant as its scales!"

"Do you have any bright ideas?" Bill shot back, backpedaling to avoid another burst of fire. "We don't have enough wizards to stun it!"

"My sword isn't long enough to reach any vital organs." Ragnok said.

"Defodio!" Harry snapped, flicking his wand. With a flash of white light, a large boulder was carved from the wall and fell to the floor.

"Depulso Velox!" Harry shouted, lifting his wand again. Behind him, he could hear Bill's voice in unison with his.

The heavy boulder was thrown across the room and slammed into the chest of the dragon, knocking it to the ground. The Ironbelly roared in pain, but still managed to rise, its scales mangled and dripping with hot blood. The dragon roared again and swung its tail, shattering the boulder.

"Son of a bitch," Bill hissed, pulling up a shield to block the shower of debris. "This thing is a monster. I've never fought anything this strong before."

"Why do you think we chose dragons to guard the vaults?" Ragnok scowled. "The beasts are vicious, and are some of the most magically resistant of foes."

Snape's words ran through Harry's mind once again. 'Avada Kedavra can be used to fell even the most magically resistant of foes. Trolls, giants, even dragons will fall to the Killing curse.'

"I guess it's time to see if that bastard ever taught me anything." Harry muttered, raising his wand.

Time seemed to move in slow motion as Harry's wand moved in the familiar lightning-bolt pattern. "Avada Kedavra!"

There was a flash of blinding green light, and the unmistakable sound of the curse rushing toward the dragon, and Harry closed his eyes.

"You did it!" Bill shouted.

Harry opened his eyes, the dragon was slumped into a heap, its great head resting on its forearms.

Breathing heavily, Harry slipped his wand back into his sleeve and leaned against the rocky wall. "It's over."

"How did you know that would work?" Bill asked. "I would never have thought to try the Killing curse against a dragon of all things."

"Snape told me," Harry said. "I wasn't sure if it would work, but we didn't have any other options."

Bill grinned. "Who thought that bastard would know anything useful."

Harry laughed and ran a hand through his hair. "Turns out he's rather knowledgeable about the Dark Arts."

"We need to keep moving." Ragnok said. "The Lestrange vault is just up here."

Ragnok gestured past the dragon's corpse with his sword, and Harry could hear muffled spellfire through the thick walls.

"The Death Eaters are still trying to break into the vault." Harry said, straightening up. "We still have time to stop them."

Ragnok lead them past the dragon and around another bend in the tunnel. "There's the vault."

Harry peered past Ragnok's shoulder. Four Death Eaters were slinging spells into the heavy door guarding the Lestrange vault.

"Defodio!"

The Gouging spell ricocheted off of the thick door and carved a thick gash into the rocky wall.

"Again!" One of the Death Eaters shouted. "The Dark Lord wants us to see what is in this vault!"

Bill and Harry shared a glance and raised their wands.

"Expulso!"

Harry's Explosion hex detonated against the roof of the vault, bringing down a shower of debris and billowing clouds of dust.

"Odrezat! Percutio! Reducto!" Bill's wand was a blur as he spat the three spells. His aim was true, and when the clouds of debris settled there was only a single Death Eater left standing.

"Potter." The Death Eater snarled, raising his wand. "The Dark Lord has quite the price on your head."

Harry leveled his wand at the Death Eater. "Yeah, I get that a lot, too bad nobody's been able to claim the prize yet."

"You're outnumbered." Bill said, raising his own wand. "There are three of us and only one of you. The second you cast a spell, your life is forfeit."

"It's forfeit anyway," Ragnok growled, glaring at the Death Eater. "You will die today Death Eater. Drop your wand, and it'll be quick. Try and cast a spell and I'll turn you over to goblin interrogators before we kill you."

The Death Eater's wand started to move, and in a blur of motion, Ragnok flung his sword across room. The whirling blade lopped off the Death Eater's wrist, and he fell to the floor, his wand still clutched in his disembodied grip.

"Before you sentence him to goblin justice Director, I need to check something." Bill said.

Ragnok scooped his sword up from the ground and wiped its blade clean on the Death Eater's robes. "Feel free."

Bill pulled off the Death Eater's mask and tossed it aside, revealing an unfamiliar man's face. Bill raised his wand and rested it on the man's forehead. "Legilimens."

It was quiet for a moment, and then Bill released the Death Eater, letting him fall back to the floor.

"They didn't get into the vault." Bill said, holstering his wand. "But we have a problem."

"What now?"

"Gringotts is rigged to blow." Bill said flatly. "There was another team of Death Eaters that has spent the past few hours planting Erumpent horns throughout the bank. They're supposed to trigger the horns once they get the all clear from the Death Eaters in the bank, or at midnight, whichever comes first."

Harry glanced down at his watch. 11:57.

"The horns are strategically placed along the upper levels." Bill continued. "When they explode, the building will be destroyed, but the vaults should all remain intact."

"Makes sense," Ragnok agreed. "The Death Eaters wouldn't want to risk damaging their own wealth. And if you hadn't come to visit me today, we may never have realized that they were trying to get into the Lestrange vault."

Ragnok closed his eyes. "There aren't any other goblins in Gringotts, but I can't be sure if anyone else here. My wards are only connected to the guards."

"We don't have time to disable the explosives." Bill said flatly. "We barely have time to clear the bank before gets destroyed."

"You two need to Apparate out of here." Ragnok ordered.

"What about you?" Harry asked. "We can't leave you here to die!"

Ragnok smiled warmly. "Don't worry about me, I'll be over a mile below the explosion. It'll take time for me to dig through the rubble, but I won't be in any danger."

Harry frowned, but let it go. "What about the wards? I thought we couldn't Apparate near the lower vaults."

"I'm pulling the wards down now," Ragnok said urgently. "But you two need to leave. We only have a few minutes left."

Harry wanted to protest, but knew it was pointless. "I still can't Apparate. Bill?"

Bill placed his hand on Harry's shoulder. "I'll take us to St. Mungo's. I'm sure you're dying to check on Pansy."

Harry smiled at Bill, and nodded. Bill's face screwed up in concentration, and they vanished with a loud CRACK!
