Night Wind

Day Wind

Mikey slipped open the window, and shimmied quickly down the drainpipe, mindful of not looking down. His pen-pal, Lore, was visiting Amity Park and leaving in a few days, and he couldn't wait to meet her.

Across town, Sidney Pointdexter threw a rock which ricocheted of Danny Fenton's window and hit a car, nicking the windshield and setting off its alarm. He quickly turned invisible when one of the elder Fentons poked his head out the window before turning to leave last minute instructions for the three ghostly occupants of the room.

"Dusk," he was saying, "will sleep in Jazz's room while Twilight can sleep in here with you, Danny."

Why does he insist on calling you by that ridiculous name, Night Lord? You are Phantom; you have no name.

Perhaps its time.

What?!

Danny Phantom has a nice ring to it.

No.

Why not?

All of our names come from Night Wind's favorite poem Crossing the Bar. Your name, should you ever receive one, must come from there as well.

Danny made a face, but conceded the argument to Twilight. Turning back to Jack Fenton, who'd gone silent until the conversation had run its course.

"Dusk stays."

"Dusk is a girl."

"And we are males, but each of us has our own tower and tree."

Night Lord!

Danny sensed the protest, but didn't turn around to face Dusk.

"There will be more room for you boys, if she bunks with Jazz."

Dusk stays. Phantom was adamant his sister remain with them. Five minutes later, he sighed in defeat as Dusk was ushered out the room, and Jack activated the ghost sensors.

Clockwork laughed softly and looked at Ain. "Well?"

"Is the boy correct?"

"Of course," came the answer. "All the Night Wind phantoms have their names drawn from that poem."

"Then what is it?"

Clockwork gave her a knowing smile, and turned his attention back the scene.

Well past midnight, Dusk teleported them well out of range of the Fentons' sensors. Taking to the air, they joined Sidney about a block down the road. Phantom was thankful the hunters hadn't thought to block their powers, especially since Dusk was the only one of the three who could teleport.

Hunters, Phantom signed. Dusk and Twilight are without protection from the sun, so we cannot stay long.

"I've gone through the entire poem, already, Clockwork," Ain whine. "Just tell me already!"

"And spoil my fun?"

"Ooh!"

Ember was softly strumming the chord to a popular campfire song when she sensed their presence. Sitting with her were two other ghosts, and-

"Mikey?!" Phantom blurted out, when he saw the red-haired boy.

"Hi, Danny," Mikey said, waving. "Hope you don't mind me interrupting the get-together. Lore and I have been chatting through a blog, and she was passing through. It was my only chance to meet her."

A girl of mixed Asian and Caucasian features waved her hand in greeting. She was pretty, Dusk thought, with shoulder-length wine-red hair and honey-gold eyes. She seemed to glow about the edges a bit, but exuded not a ryu-aura, but a-

She's Day Wind, Night Lord!

What of it? Lore signed back, interrupting the conversation. I am free to choose my friends. Are you not free?

Sidney's eyes widened as the two girls signed back and forth furiously with one another. "Trouble?" he asked Phantom, who shook his head bemused.

Twilight rolled his eyes and plopped down on the grass next to the ghost boy, who introduced himself as Breeze of the Day Wind.

Twilight of the Night Wind, Midnight Second.

"Huh? Use words, dude."

Phantom's hands moved, forming a familiar series of symbols that Sidney caught as they flashed past. "Phantom, too fast," he complained.

Phantom smirked, but repeated the symbols slowly in a mix of ASL and the ghost language the phantomic guard used.

"Um," Sidney muttered, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose. "I think I recognize the signs for 'queen', 'night', 'star' 'forbidden'. Am I right?"

Phantom nodded, making a so-so gesture.

"Can you teach me your sign language, Danny?" Mikey asked. "It'd be cool to communicate and no one else can know what we're saying. Kind of like our own code."

Phantom fingerspelled Nathan's name.

"Yeah, Nathan would want to join in as well."

Phantom gave him a knowing smile, but shook his head.

No.

"Only me?"

Yes.

"Why?"

I sense...

A strange look came over Phantom's face just then, as he looked upwards in thought. A large phoenix, the Fire Bird of Legend herself, peered down from the tree's uppermost branch, smiling softly down at him. His eyes went blank, as a memory came to the forefront.

A little boy of about 3 years of age carried the old red worn leather book to older ghost reading at the table. "Night Wind?"

"Yes, Eveningstar?"

" Read poem."

"Okay, my little phantom."

Opening his eyes, Dusk and Twilight caught him before he fell. As his hands were full, and he couldn't sign his question, Twilight whispered, "What did you see, Night Lord?"

"My name. I was given a name. Night Wind, himself, called me by name."

"How can this be? The Queen of the Night Stars says you are Phantom, the nameless one."

"She lied," Phantom hissed, fury rising. "If she lied about my name, what else is she keeping from us?"

"What name did Night Wind call you?" Dusk asked, paling a bit at the Night Lord's anger.

"Eveningstar," Phantom said. "My name is Eveningstar."

"Welcome home, my seedlings," the Phoenix spoke, cutting the thick silence that followed Phantom's announcement. "Emerald (Phantom), Amethyst (Dusk), Onyx (Twilight), and Carnelian (Mikey -to his amazement)."

"TIME OUT!"
