Chapter 29 (Final Fight: Angel of Death)
The top of the spiral stairs revealed a long corridor that held a golden door at the end. When they made it to the door, Sinjin and Beck kicked it open. Tori walked inside and studied the area with her eyes. It was a large square arena with a ceiling that seemed to rise another hundred feet.
The red carpet stretched out to a series of steps that held two brass throne chairs. One was empty while the other was where Trina sat. Tori's heart skipped a beat and she started to move forward. Trina was sitting in upright position with her eyes closed and her body frozen. She felt Sinjin's hand on her shoulder and looked back with concern.
"Trina's there, Samil can't be far." He was right, they could be walking into a trap. Samil was nowhere to be seen, but that didn't mean he wasn't hiding somewhere in the room like a coward. Robbie looked to the ceiling and shifted Rex upwards.
"Want me to collapse the ceiling?"
"Too much risk." Sinjin curled his finger over his chin and scanned the area with his eyes. "Debris could hit Trina or us." Tori's lip pulled back into a frown as she focused her eyes on her sister. Her heart's pounding was destroying her as she wanted desperately to run up to Trina and take her into her arms.
Of to the right was a large shadow. She knew better than to go any further. "He's hiding in the shadows." She cleared her throat and clenched her fists. "Samil! We made it through your little systematic game, now come out and fight us!"
"You should be careful what you ask for," Samil replied, "I am most impressed with how well your group got here. Taking out the Seven, and even Barbas. That's a great feat for any group of humans." His voice was all around them, making it impossible to determine where he was. "As promised, I will fight you. If you think you can defeat me in combat, I will surely be surprised."
"We've no time for your cockiness, Samil!" She strained her voice to shout, already fueled with anger over this man's hiding. "Show yourself."
"I am an angel of death. I've already warned you how foolish racing in to fight me is." She heard the sound of wings flapping in the air above her and quickly looked up to see Samil standing in air with his wings stretched out. "You had a chance to turn away."
"You expect us to believe you really would have sent us back to earth? Even if we had considered it, we were never going to leave without my sister." She clenched her fists as the demon scowled at her. "We didn't come all this way to chat, Samil."
"I assure you." Tori watched as he extended his left arm and pointed his finger upwards. A ball of darkness formed and grew flat, then spread into blades. As the deadly blade spun above his finger, his lips curled into a sadistic snarl. "Neither have I."
The spinning blade shot towards them and Tori jumped to the side. "Duck!" The others collapsed to the ground, narrowly avoiding the slice. Knowing she couldn't fight with her blade, she generated the gun and quickly countered with a shot. Samil flew off to the side and threw his hand forward, tossing a large blast of darkness at her.
Cat lunged forward, slashing through the dark blast with her light claws. She turned up to Samil and forced a blast of light in his direction. Samil then curved his arm and narrowed his eyes as an arc of darkness sliced through her blast and cut into her, knocking her back.
"You okay?" Tori looked over Cat, seeing the gash on her torso. The girl nodded and Tori turned up to Samil, narrowing her glare at him. "Nice try Samil." Samil laughed maliciously and flew upwards.
"Who says I am trying? When I try, you will know." Tori grit her teeth and watched as he spun his scythe. Several dark spear-like shadows generated, ready to shoot. Her heart jumped up and she called out for the group to scatter. They bolted from the center, each running in separate directions to avoid the shadow spears. "You can run, but in my arena, there is nowhere for you to hide."
Samil vanished in a dark haze and Tori's eyes widened. She scanned the area, trying to gauge where he would appear. "He can only travel by way of shadow…" When she looked at her friends, each gazing around the room, it was Robbie that had stopped in front of a shadow on the floor. "Robbie! Get away from there!"
Robbie snapped his gaze over and lifted his eyebrows. "Wha-" The floor rumbled under his feet, causing him to look back in time to see Samil slowly rising from the ground. "Oh shit." Samil lifted an index finger up and pressed it against Robbie's midsection.
Thinking fast, Tori ran towards the two. She aimed her pistol out and fired a shot at Samil, but missed. Robbie's head fell back into a scream, and a dark laser pierced through him. "Too easy." Samil balled his fist and swung it towards the man, striking Robbie in the jaw.
To her right Sinjin charged past, holding his blade down for an upward swing. Samil turned his gaze over and frowned as Sinjin slashed his sword up across his torso. Blood splashed out and he took off once more into the air. "Get back down here!" Sinjin exclaimed. He pulled his sword back and threw it like a lance at Samil.
Tori put her hand to Sinjin's shoulder and looked up just as the sword pierced through Samil. "Wait for it." She knew it wasn't that simple, not while he still had his scythe. "Remember, we need to focus on the scythe." The blood ceased its dripping and Tori pointed up. "Look closely."
The wound on Samil's chest was closing and the sword was being pushed from his body. Sinjin cursed aloud as the demon turned his gaze back onto them. "What were you thinking?" Samil moved his arm over and pointed his fingers at Tori and Sinjin. "Did you forget that I am protected?" Tori felt a sudden shift in the room's temperature. Her body shivered and for the first time she felt as though she needed a coat on. Her eyebrows arched up and Samil turned his head to Jade.
"No we didn't forget." Jade's lip turned up into a smirk as heavy winds produced in the air. "I just needed a distraction long enough." Samil's eyes widened as Jade sent freezing gusts of wind towards him. Tori watched for a sign that Jade's attack was working, because once the scythe was frozen they would be able to shatter it.
The scythe was flashing with a deep red color each time the wind struck it. Samil bared his teeth at Jade and snapped his fingers. "I see what you're doing." Tori raised an eyebrow and looked over to see a black circle appear beneath her friend. Her heart clenched as several chains shot out and grabbed ahold of Jade's arms and legs.
Jade looked down with a scream and Beck ran for her. "Get these things off me!" Samil took a deep breath and sighed as the temperature rose back to normal.
Beck grabbed at the chains, continually trying to tear at them. "They're too dense! I need help!" Samil spread his arms out and threw his head back as his wings spread as well. A dark, rolling fog drifted from his wings and spears poked out from along his body.
"Beck, look out!"
"What!" Beck threw his head up and froze with his hands tangled in Jade's chains. Andre jumped in front of him and threw his gun into view. Samil's eyes widened as a bullet shot out and blew Samil into a nearby wall. "Thanks Andre, keep firing. I have to get Jade out of these!"
Jade was still being pulled into the circle, screaming out the more she struggled against them. Her feet and calves were fully inside and she was complaining about something that felt as though she was being eaten. Sweat formed at Beck's face as he continued to pull at the chains, whimpering fearfully.
"Hang in there!" Tori hurried over with Cat. Cat's metal claws turned white just as Tori generated her blade. Both women swung at the chains multiple times, shattering them with the light. Jade fell sideways into Beck's arms and he pulled her from the black hole.
Robbie backed up beside Andre, looking over his shoulder at the group. "Is she alright?" He was still bleeding from the hole in his torso, but miraculously still fighting.
Jade was whimpering and pointing down to her feet. "Something was scratching and biting. I felt it." Tori looked in horror at Jade's feet, the flesh had been eaten almost down to the bone. Blood was pooling out on the ground and still gushing out like a geyser. She threw her hand up to her mouth and looked back to the smoke surrounding Samil with narrow eyes.
"Keep shooting, Andre."
"I'm not stopping anytime soon!"
"Great." She hovered her blade over Jade's knees and closed her eyes. Jade lay back on Beck's legs, gazing down and chattering her teeth while Cat stood up protectively beside the group. Tendrils of light fell from the sword, dripping like candle wax onto Jade's wound. "Take a deep breath, Jade. You'll be fine."
"What the hell was in there, Tori?"
"I don't know, but I'd like not to find out." She opened her eyes and focused intensely on the wounds. Jade's flesh was growing back and connecting over her bone. The pale faced girl wiped away the sweat on her forehead and leaned her head back, moaning softly. "You lost a lot of blood. Stay down and recover for a couple minutes, alright?"
"You need me, though."
"It'll be alright," Cat stated, "Don't forget I can use frigid cold temperatures too. Samil can't know that." Cat was continually slashing her claws through the air, throwing into the smoke one light attack after another. Jade put her hand on her stomach and looked down to her feet, wiggling her toes. Beck caressed her cheek, slowly sweeping tears away.
Tori heard a strange crackling noise and stood beside Cat. Her narrow gaze fell onto the smoke where Cat's and Andre's attacks were striking. Robbie was sending in an occasional shockwave while Sinjin kept his sword in the ground and was blasting out fire streams into the fray.
She held her hand up and called out to them. "Hold fire!" The left corner of her lip twisted as a wrinkle formed between her eyebrows. Samil's deep voice echoed in the room and a skeleton stepped out of the smoke.
This skeleton had black holes in his eyes with small gold dots for pupils. Two thick black wings spread out from its back and in its hand was the scythe. Everyone gasped out as Samil tapped the bottom end of the scythe on the ground.
"I wanted to see what it would be like…" The fingers around his scythe regrew the smoldering flesh and stretched out along his arm. "To be completely obliterated." Tori's body sank down and a heavy breath fell from her lips as she watched Samil return to form. "Thank you for giving me such a wonderful opportunity, although I'm not fond of the smell of my burning flesh."
Robbie charged forward with a shot, dropping Rex to the ground. "What are you doing!" Tori reached out as though trying to grab him and watched as Samil calmly allowed Robbie to grab the scythe away. "Shit! Robbie don't you remember from the research, you can't-"
It was too late, the minute Robbie held the scythe in his hands, his own flesh began to smolder. Robbie's body trembled and a painful scream erupted from his lips. "Give me that," Samil retrieved his weapon and sighed. "Only a fool attempts to touch the weapon of the Angel of Death. You are neither God nor Lucifer…"
Robbie peered down at his hands and whimpered as Samil touched his left shoulder. Fear pulsed through Tori's body as she watched darkness fall over Robbie's arm. It slowly bubbled and took over him like a cast, then within seconds, it erupted and left only a bloody stump in place.
Samil pushed his victim aside and watched as the man grabbed his shoulder and bared his teeth. The demon pointed his scythe out horizontally and his eyes appeared to glisten. He spun around, creating a trail of shadows from his scythe.
Tori studied the ring and her eyes widened as it began to spread out. The edges shimmered in the light of the arena, a good indicator of sharpness. "Everyone! Get on the ground now!"
The ring blasted out and everyone ducked down, narrowly avoiding the dangerous slice. Tori's body flattened over the palms of her hands and she turned her head over to see Robbie standing to his feet. She clenched her teeth and watched angrily as Samil turned to him.
"Get away from there, Robbie! Get back now!"
Samil folded his wings around Robbie, enclosing the both of them as though a bat wrapping itself up to sleep. Tori pushed herself up to her feet and called out as Robbie's screams echoed into the air.
When the demon opened his wings up, Robbie stumbled away from him. His body was trembling and blood seemed to trickle from every pore on his body. "The most I've done was suck his energy out," Samil laughed maliciously as Robbie dropped to the ground. His hand reached out as though trying to reach Rex, but consciousness left him too soon.
"I'm sorry…" Samil walked to the puppet and pointed his palm down at it. "Were you wanting this?" Tori's eyes widened as the puppet's body became shrouded by the shadows around it. Samil snapped his fingers into his palm and Rex exploded in a geyser of darkness. "You useless boy. I will leave your soul for after I deal with the rest of your friends."
So Robbie's unconscious and down for the count. It's been a rough battle from the start, and it's only going to get tougher.
