Chapter Twenty Eight

Danny made his way quietly into Erin's office, finding his sister at her desk toiling over files. "My favorite sister," he proclaimed as he came in.

"Your only sister," Erin corrected, not even looking up from her files.

"Doesn't mean you're not my favorite. Besides, I do have in-laws."

"No one favors their in-laws over their own family." Erin finally looked up. "Except maybe your wife."

Danny shrugged slightly. "Maybe."

"What do you need, Danny?" Erin asked, looking back down at her files.

"Why must I need something to come see my sister?"

"Because the only time you say I'm your favorite is when you need something"

Danny shrugged again. "Fair enough. I was wondering if you could look into a case for me."

"With all the free time I have on my hands?" she asked sarcastically.

"You oversee all cases, right?"

She sighed. "Yes."

"Then you can look into something for me, right?" Danny asked.

She looked up at him, narrowing her eyes. "You want me to look into Jamie's case."

Danny smirked. "You're catching on."

"Why?" she asked.

"I don't think we have all the information. Something's missing."

"Like what?"

"Jamie's statement didn't match up with some aspects of the physical evidence recovered from him," Danny explained. "Namely, Honor's involvement."

"You were the detective on the case. You interviewed them."

"The family lawyered up. The only one Baez and I talked to was Freddy. The others…"

"Gave their statements to Heath," Erin finished for him.

Danny gestured his hand at her. "Exactly."

"Which would be part of the DA file, but not the police file."

"You get the cake," he said.

"Can I just ask why?"

"Why what?"

"Why dig into this? The case is essentially closed, Danny. Honor and Liam go before the courts in a few weeks, but they're pleading out. So why keep looking?"

"Because Jamie needs answers."

"Jamie does, or you do?" Erin countered.

Danny gave her a look. "I don't think Jamie has all the answers."

"Such as?"

"Honor."

"What makes you think that he doesn't know everything about her involvement?"

"Because in his statement, he made her out to be some sort of savior or hero. I don't think that was the case."

"She did let him go," Erin reminded him.

"Did she?" Danny replied.

Erin sighed. "That's what Jamie said."

"That's my point. I don't think Jamie has the whole story."

"And you think that without it, he won't find closure."

"Something like that."

"Let me just say this, though. Are you really doing it for him? Because maybe you should make sure this is what he wants."

"Of course it's what he wants."

Erin looked at him. "It's what you want for him. Because you think it's best for him. But is it really what he wants?"

Danny sighed. "I don't know. But I do want to find answers for him."

Erin nodded. "Okay, then. I'll talk to Heath."

"Thank you."

"But I feel like we're snooping around behind Jamie's back."

"It's better this way."

Erin scoffed. "For us, or for him?"

Danny opted not to answer that, just saying, "thanks again, sis," as he headed out the door.
