CH. 29

(JPOV)

I left the campsite behind as I started to run for the field.

Did the future teller give us an estimated time? I asked checking in with my pack.

She said about twenty to thirty minutes Sam reported to me.

This is going to be epic. Quil was getting all excited.

Quil, focus we don't need any swelled heads. I wanted him to take this seriously, it wasn't a game.

I can't believe you took food from that leech. Paul hissed at me.

What can I say, she's a very good cook. I responded.

But she treated you like a dog. He was still irritated.

She was clearly joking. Embry rolled his eyes.

So, what? We are friends with the bloodsuckers now. Paul whined still.

You don't have to be friends with them, Paul. But they aren't our enemy either. I sighed in irritation

I agree with, Jacob. Sam had my back, as well as the others. Paul was the only one that wasn't all on board.

The truth was I had been watching them closely over the past few days. Ever since Edward called us out on our narrow minded views I had tried to watch with a more open mind. What I noticed started to change my mind on previous misconceptions. The vampires interacted with one another just like anyone else. I can see that they were more than a mere coven but a family. The love the mated couples vibrated off each other, it was difficult to miss their devotion to each other. It wasn't very different from the couples that had imprinted, acted with one another. In fact, if wasn't for their smell, I would think they were just as human as me. Well, that and humans that who could fight very well.

I caught a wiff of a sickly sweet scent in the area. It smelt like there was about two new bloodsuckers in the area.

I'm going to check this out quickly and then meet the rest of you.

Do you want one of us to meet you? Jared offered right away.

No, I got it handled. The Cullens are going to need you more than me.

I followed the trail, I wanted to make sure that no one was going to catch Isabella and Edward off guard.

I spotted two vampires checking out my trail from yesterday with curiosity. Before they could catch sight of me I sprang to attack the closer of the two vampires. I caught his arm in my teeth and started to yank. He howled in pain and suddenly I felt myself go rigid. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't move.

My brothers all started to panic since they were now sitting ducks like I was. None of us could move to defend ourselves and the newborn vampires would soon be upon us.

The blonde vampire yanked his arm free and turned on me. Surprisingly the larger vampire stopped him.

"Wait, don't destroy him." He commanded.

"Are you mad? He tried to rip my arm off." He snarled at the other one. Maybe I would luck out and they would kill each other.

"Exactly why we should capture him and bring him to Maria." The first smiled sinisterly. The other looked confused and he was getting more upset.

"Think of it, he could be useful if trained properly. He could be used in our wars to destroy other vampires. And who would Maria thank, the two of us. We will become her favorites." He smirked and the other one finally caught on.

"Sweet," the blonde grinned.

Oh Hell, No. I'm not going to be some sick vampire's lap dog. Paul growled.

We won't be as soon they lift whatever is paralyzing us we will attack. Sam wasn't too worried.

Exactly, as soon it's off I'm going to destroy the one that controls it. I promised.

Ah Shit. Embry whined as the fight was starting.

It didn't take long for the newborns to find us. One grabbed Paul around the middle and started to squeeze. We all could register his pain. Quickly though the large vampire I think called Emmett pulled the newborn off and ripped his arms off.

"What is wrong with you? Why didn't you move?" he yelled at Paul looking at him. He ripped the newborn's head off while yelling to one of the vampire leaders. "Carlisle, something is wrong with the wolves!"

The one called Maggie bent in front of Quil and waved a hand in front of his face. "I think they are paralyzed." She caught on quickly. "One of them must be doing it somehow. Carmen call Bella and see if she can find Jacob. He isn't here yet."

"Everyone we are going to have to help the wolves. Protect them the best we can." Carlisle ordered. Grabbing a vampire before it reached Sam.

They're going to protect us? Jared seemed surprised.

"Are you serious?" the blonde vampire that was Bella's sister whined.

"Yes, Rose. They wouldn't be in this positioned if they weren't trying to help us." The motherly like vampire responded to her. Rose scowled but did a roundhouse kick, kicking a vampire away from Embry.

Is it wrong to find that kind of hot?

"I look forward to the challenge anyways." One of the vampires on our side smirked, I think his name was Gary. He and Emmett pulled a vampire apart like a tug of war.

Alice?! Quil questioned as the vampire who we thought was named Maggie had her red hair pulled off. The black spikey hair was unmistakable.

I thought they said she had died.

They obviously lied to us.

They broke the treaty, we should destroy them.

No one will attack the Cullens until we have answers. I thundered with my order.

Even though they broke the treaty. Paul whined. We could see her mate being held by two vampires as Alice fought the Hispanic looking one. His face was twisted in face of panic, worry and furry.

It could have been her mate that changed her. Sam suggested.

Beside they're doing all they can to protect us at the moment. We will not repay them by fighting them. I ordered.

"Looks like we get to fight after all. Don't use your bonds on her." The vampire with short blonde hair was looking away from me, both looked eager for a fight.
"It wouldn't work any ways. Nor will it work on my friend any longer" I heard Isabella speak up. Suddenly I could move again. I instantly grabbed the arm of the vampire that held me and my brothers against our will.

"Why can't I freeze you?" He hollered as I snapped off his arm.

Out of the corner of my arm I saw Isabella fighting the other vampire.

With my brothers now free, they rushed to join the fight. Quil bit the vampire who was fighting Alice's behind. When she whirled around Alice took the advantage and beheaded the vampire.

"Thanks," she looked at Quil. "I can explain later, please don't be mad." She called over her shoulder as she went to help her mate.

The vampire I was fighting came at me again. I kicked the vampire with my hind legs sending him flying into the tree. I grinned as the tree cracked and I hoped it landed on him.

"Edward, move!" Isabella screamed. My grin faded as I saw him start to run for it. Shit! What was he doing here? Why didn't she leave him at the campsite? The newborn had him by the ankle with the one arm he had left. Bella managed to pull the vampire way but was struggling to hold on to him. I rushed forward to help and skidded on some damp leaves causing me to accidently crash into Edward.

He tumbled over the edge and I watched in horror as he rolled right into the tree. I was sickened as a branch tore through his side like a scene out of a horror movie. I had just killed an innocent.

"Mine!" bellowed the newborn.

"Help me," Isabella's desperate pleading called me back to reality. I pinned his shoulders down so she could pull off his leg and then I attacked the neck. With two bites it was off. It rolled off and that fight was over.

Isabella started for Edward and I jumped in her way giving her a warning growl. She would never forgive herself if she hurt him. "Get away from him. I need to help him." She snarled trying to get around me. I snapped at her again not really wanting to fight her, but her bloodlust had to be out of control. Right?

"I'm serious, Jacob, make yourself useful and get Carlisle. He's going to die if you don't let me help him and it will be all your fault." She begged me, her eyes were filled with worry in determination. I realized it wasn't his blood she was after but she was trying to save him.

I watched as she rushed to his side and was gently looking him over. She made no move to attack him. She even appeared to be crying over him. My guilt was starting to get over whelming.

The fight in the clearing was almost over and my brothers were waiting for orders.

Sam, phase as soon as you can and tell the one named Carlisle that Isabella needs him here. I'm not sure if he's going to make it.

Right away.

The rest of you help make sure all body parts are being burned and then head for home and wait for me there. I'm going to phase and see if I can help.

I phased and grabbed my shorts before joining Bella by Edward's side.

"What can I do?" I knelt on his other side. I made a grab for the stick that was in his side. I wanted to pull it out since it looked so painful.

She slapped my hand away quickly and my wrist snapped. I realized she was in protective mode and I would have to be a careful or she might bite my head off, literary. Sam had been the same way when Emily had been hurt.
"Don't touch him. I told you get Carlisle." She hissed. I held up my hands trying to show her I was only trying to help.

"One of the others is getting him. Our minds work like walkie-talkies. They are going to relay the message, but the fight is ending, it may take a few minutes." I explained.

"I don't have a few minutes. He's dying. His pulse is too weak." She looked frantic and desperate. She lifted his arm and pushed up his sleeve. She started to bring it to her lips and my insides twisted.

"What are you doing," I tried to stop her from doing something she would regret.
"Saving him the only way I can. I'm not going to lose him." She looked dangerous as a real bloodsucking vampire to me.

"But the treaty," were the first thing out of my mouth. I didn't want to fight her or the Cullens. I was torn in the inside of what was the right thing to do.

"Screw the treaty. I'm not going to lose my mate over the treaty. I had to come and save yours and all the wolves' butts from not being able to move from that vampire. I had no choice but to bring him towards the fight. Because of you he almost got crushed by that tree." I was again reminded that they didn't have to help us while we were in our frozen state. However, they did. We would have lost Paul, which wasn't really that great of a lost, but the others would've been hurt too.

"I didn't know he was there." I snapped but I was angrier at myself than her.

"But you did know he was there when you pushed him down the hill and into the branches that speared him. He would've survived just a broken ankle." My guilt still gnawed at me that we were in this position because of me. I was too careless and Edward got hurt. I should've known she wouldn't have left his side during the fight. That he had to be close by.

"It was an accident. I was only trying to help." I apologized, but it wasn't good enough. I had cost a life that I should've protected.

"Then help him now. I'm changing him. You can overlook the treaty if you wanted too." She pleaded with me. She didn't want a fight either, I could tell. However, she wasn't looking for permission but understanding.

"I can't watch this. Do it. The wolves won't look for retribution." I finally agreed and looked away. I hope I had made the right decision.

I could hear her biting him and it took my concentration not to phase. I did hear enough that it didn't sound like she was drinking.

"There is an artery in the thigh." The words came tumbling out of my mouth before I could stop them.

I heard her shift and whisper her love and apologies to him. I looked over and to see her have his head in her lap and she was lovingly caresses him.

"He did want this. If he didn't I wouldn't have done this. Please believe me." She said softly.

Flashes of conversations with him returned to me. How he never hid that this was what he wanted. Also how he wanted to be in charge of his own life and not have it chosen for him by others. I had no right to deny him what he really wanted.

"I know. Is it going to work?" I questioned. I couldn't see any changes yet. But I wasn't sure how long this took.

"It should. I've never done this before. Thank you, I didn't want to fight you. You have become a friend." Her voice was quiet. I smiled slightly because she was right, she had become a friend.

"I should be thanking you. I ran into the vampires on my way down. The bigger vampire froze me and wanted to use me as a gift to their leader. He thought I could be trained to fight alongside them and he would become the leader's favorite. All of my brothers were frozen when I was. We were defenseless in the fight. But your family still fought to protect us, putting themselves at risk." I explained how I was grateful to her and her family.

"Is everyone okay?" she looked up from Edward pausing in mid stroke of his hair.

"No casualties on our side." I answered her question, but also looked for answers of my own. "I think Jasper got slightly hurt protecting Alice from the leader vampire. But she's gone now. Alice got her." I watched for her response.

"That's good." I could see when it registered that I said Alice instead of Maggie.

"Jacob, I can explain." She looked worried. But I stopped her before she could continue.

"Her wig was pulled off by the vampire that wanted Jasper. Jasper wasn't part of the treaty so he didn't know he was breaking it by changing Alice. I understand why you had to lie about it. Was she really even hit by that van?"

"Yes, we had met Jasper only two days prior. He tried to stay away from Alice but the connection had formed at first sight. When he saw the van coming towards her he leapt in front of it to stop it. He accidently hit her head in the process and that is when she needed to be changed." So it was as Sam and I figured. It was the new vampire that changed Alice. He must've not been able to resist that he thought he was helping her like Bella just did for Edward. To them changing their mate wasn't killing them but saving them.

"Bella," the blonde vampire doctor came running up.

"Over here. Don't let anyone else near, there is alot of blood." He gave me a cautious look when Bella called out to him.

I pulled back so he could look over Edward. I started collecting the pieces and started a fire. I listened as the pieces hissed then let off a purple smoke.

I was almost done when the vampire doctor started to help me.

"It's all over now. Alice surprised us all with how she took out Maria. Maria severely underestimated us. For a while it looked grim when the wolves were all frozen." Carlisle explained.

"A vampire had Jacob frozen with his ability. Since the wolves' minds were connected it affected them all." Bella explained to him.

"Interesting." He seemed to be studying me making me feel a little unease. "It should be safe to move him now. We can bring him back to the house."

I went behind a tree to phase. When I stepped out Bella was carrying Edward as if he was a broken doll she was holding close to her so it wouldn't get damaged again.

"Thank you, again." She smiled softly at me. I nodded and took off running towards La Push.

So that's it, you're allowing him to be changed? Jared questioned.

Edward had made it clear his wishes to be changed. He was well informed and made the choice himself. I answered their questions.

And we are going to let go of the fact that they lied about Alice? Quil asked.

I believe they lied to protect their family, however, it was the one called Jasper that changed her. He technically didn't know he was breaking a treaty.

The Cullen's aren't a threat. Sam backed me up again. A fight with them would be without merit. We all owe them a debt of gratitude for saving us. You especially, Paul, the large one called Emmett saved your ass. That newborn was seconds from biting you. Do you really want to repay him by fighting him?

No, but it's still wrong.

Perhaps, but this isn't our call this time. I insisted. Quil and Embry run patrols. Jared and Paul take over for them at sun down.

I reached my father's house and phased back to human form. I entered the house planning on eatting then sacking out for a few hours. I stopped short when I saw Charlie sitting in our living room. I forgot about that he would be here during the fight.

My father looked up with relived expression. "Everything alright, son." He asked. I nodded not trusting my voice at the second. I hated how I was going to have to explain to him that we lost Edward and it was my fault. What were we going to tell Charlie or will the Cullens figure that out?

"Jacob, you seem out of it. Do I need to get my Breathalyzer out of the cruiser?" Charlie looked at me with eyebrow raised.

"No sir, I'm fine see. Zyxwvu…tsqpo…nmlk…ihgf…edcba." I recited.

"You forgot r and j," Charlie chuckled. I paused thinking about it in my head.

"Sorry, but I promise I'm good." I crossed my heart. "I just need to catch up on my sleep."

"If you say so," Charlie went back to watching the game. My father eyed me curiously and I shook my head before heading to the kitchen.

A/N: I was torn whether or not to have Edward waking up this chapter or Jacob's POV. Jacob won out, but Edward will be back next chapter.

The wolves think that Jasper changed Alice, there is no reason to correct him on that.

Bella and the Cullens really saved the wolves' butts so that is why the pack is not going to be too gun-ho about fighting them. Well except Paul, but Paul is kinda like Rose.

I know Jacob didn't deserve Bella's guilt trip, but keep in mind she was distraught and worried about Edward; that made her be a little irrational.

In case of confusion, Gary-Garrett. Jacob tried to get the names right.

"Emmett, let go don't touch me," Bella said sharply as her hand was pulled from mine.

My eyes snapped open and I was on my feet, yanking Emmett's hand off of Bella's arm. I pulled her behind me and shoved Emmett away from us sending him into a wall. The wall cracked and splintered and thin layer of dust fell around him.

I was crouched and growled at him in warning. "Stay away from her."
