MATT

'Please call if you're not feeling right.' Mom says.

'Don't worry Mrs Grey. Matt will drop me at the pool and the school parking lot is the next block and then Lexie will be in the truck with him.' Jack says as he smirks at me.

'It's Grace.' Mom says to Jack. This time I smirk at Jack.

'Come on let's go while the going is good. Mom if Hannah wakes from her nap will you get her to text me.' I say as I kiss her on the cheek.

'Yes of course darling and if you're not back within the hour I will be sending out a search party.' Mom says. I groan as I open the door and jump down the steps of the porch.

'Freedom for an hour.' I mutter to Jack as we climb into the truck and set off on the sort drive to the pool.

'Is it always like this? Everyone wanting to know where you are and what you're up to.' Jack says.

'Yep, pretty much. I'd forgotten how bad it was. At least I'm slightly further away from them now so will get some privacy.' I say.

'Security.' Jack says.

'Yes I will have it but last summer Andrews the chap that followed us around wasn't that bad.' I say.

'Matt, later when my dad arrives I'm not sure he will believe that you fell over at the pool. He can be pretty intense when he starts to question things.' Jack says.

'A bit like Christian.' I say and look at him.

'Worse.'

'Fuck, how can he be that bad? What shall we say?' I ask. 'We need to get our stories straight.'

'He has this way of sitting there and just looking at you until you feel guilty enough to blurt everything out.' Jack mutters.

'Are you scared I might blurt out everything about your relationship with the coach?' I ask. He nods. 'Jack I have had the experience of Christian and dad both grilling me at the same time and still being able to keep some stuff hidden from them.'

'Trust me this will be ten times worse.' Jack mutters.

'Hang on, I got a text from Christian earlier and it said that your dad might want to know more details about this morning and that I could trust him with anything..' I say.

'So Christian thinks you should tell my dad everything. Do you think they know each other?' Jack asks.

I dunno but it seems a bit strange. Maybe I'll call Christian while I wait for Lexie to come out of class.' I say as we arrive at the pool.

'OK, text me and let me know whether it will be safe to return to your house for dinner later or if I need to go into hiding.' Jack says.

'Don't worry I'm sure everything will be fine and you can always live in my basement though it still needs to be plastered and cleaned up. Good luck with the swim session, remember relax and stretch out and you will thrash my times.' I say.

'Cheers mate. Laters.' Jack says as he gets out of the truck.

'Laters Jack.' I say. He closes the door and I set off towards the school parking lot. Once parked I have at least five minutes to wait so call Christian.

'Grey.'

'It's me.' I say.

'I know.'

'So why are you so formal?' I ask.

'I'm in a meeting.' He mutters. 'Did you just call to chat or is it something important?'

'S..sorry, it..it doesn't matter.' I stutter.

'Hang on.' He says. 'I'll be five minutes.' I hear him say to someone. 'OK Matt I can talk now. I'm sorry I shouldn't have got shirty with you.'

'It..it's o..ok.' I stutter again, shit why am I like this with him.

'Breathe Matt.' He says gently and I do as he says. I take a deep breath.

'Christian what did you mean by your text before? Do you know Jack's dad? Why will he question what happened at the pool and why can I trust him?' I manage to ask all in a rush. 'Does he work for you?'

'Yes.' He says.

'Fuck. Did he know who I was all along when he was helping me with the house? Did he tell you where I was and you chose not to tell anyone? Were you keeping tabs on me?' I ask in another rush of words.

'Matt calm down. No he didn't know who you were until this morning. To be honest I don't normally speak to him. He speaks to Taylor and Welch and its all business stuff not family related.' Christian says.

'Security stuff.' I say.

'Yes.'

'Shit, no wonder Jack told me I'd be in for a grilling about this morning. What do I tell him?' I ask.

'Everything.' Is all Christian says.

'Including what went on between Jack and the coach?'

'Yes.' He says and I gulp. 'Matt everything will be OK. Rob will talk to you when dad is there. I've told him to be gentle with you otherwise you will freeze and have no words.'

'O..OK .' I stammer.

'Relax baby bro. You have to trust me with this. Dad knows everything and he knows what direction we're hoping to follow but we need Jack's dad on board.' Christian says.

'I'd better go, my friend Lexie is walking across the parking lot.' I say.

'Mom let you out on your own.' He says.

'Yes but I need to be back in forty minutes otherwise she's sending out a search party.' I say.

'You should have security.'

'I know. I'm surprised you didn't leave Andrews.' I say.

'I didn't want to pressure you. This has to come from you.'

'I know. I still feel OK at the moment. Maybe after the weekend.' I say as Lexie waves at me and opens the door. 'I have to go.'

'So do I. Laters baby bro.' Christian says.

'Yeah laters.' I mutter and click the phone off. 'Hi Lexie.' I lean over and kiss her cheek.

'This is a lovely surprise. I thought I would be walking.' Lexie says. 'Wow, what happened to your face?'

'Accident at the pool. I need to talk to you.' I mutter as I pull away from the parking lot.

'Sounds serious.' She says and looks at me with concern. 'Have I done something to upset you?'

'No.' I say in surprise and then add more gently. 'Why would you think that?'

'Because you know, all the stuff with my parents and I seem to screw everything up.' Lexie says with tears in her eyes. I pull up at the coffee drive through and order two Americanos. Lexie frowns. 'It's not like you to drink coffee at this time of day.'

'You need one though and I thought I'd join you.' I say and smile at her.

'You're being so mysterious Harry. Where's Jack? I thought you'd be together.' She says.

'At the pool.' I say as I take the coffees and hand them to her. 'Now back to you, you don't screw everything up. You're one of the strongest people I know. It can't be easy with everything you've had to deal with.'

'You've helped a lot. It seems easier now being on my own. When mom comes out of rehab and dad out of jail I won't go and live with them again. I need to just sort myself out and concentrate on my future.'

'You still plan to go to Pullman?' I ask as I pull up at the waterfront by the lighthouse.

'If I get the grades I need.' Lexie says.

'You will.' I say and take my coffee. 'OK Lex I need to tell you some stuff about me and hopefully you won't hate me when I've finished.'

'Harry how could I hate you? I couldn't have managed the last few months without you and Jack. I certainly wouldn't have stayed at school.' Lexie says.

'Lex please, this isn't easy.' I say and she looks at me in surprise. 'Three months ago I ran away from home, I had an argument with one of my brothers. I had to change my identity because I knew he would have loads of people out looking for me. My dad found me last week.'

'So that's why Hannah is with you now.' Lexie says as she interrupts.

'Yes my parents brought her to visit at the weekend and she stayed.' I say.

'You're so in love with her aren't you?' Lexie says.

'Yes, she means everything to me. Wait let's not get side tracked. Lexie I had to change my name when I moved.' I say.

'So, I wish I could change mine and then people won't connect me with my parents especially when I move from here.' She says.

'I could help you with that.' I say.

'You could?' she asks and I nod. 'Harry who are you really?'

'Matthew Grey.' I mutter quietly and take a deep breath.

'And is that supposed to mean something to me?' she asks. I grin at her. 'What have I said?'

'Have you heard of the Grey family, or Christian Grey or Grey Enterprise Holdings in Seattle?' I ask.

'No. I mean in our house we didn't have a TV or newspapers. Every cent my parents had went on alcohol or drugs. I used to have to hide some cash to try and get food or beg leftovers from people's lunch so I wouldn't go hungry.' Lexie says. 'Even now I don't have a TV, I either do schoolwork or work in the coffee shop. I only go to the cinema because you and Jack are so insistent and won't let me pay. Harry I mean Matthew um this is awkward…'

'Matt.'

'Matt, since you arrived at school everything in my life changed.' Lexie says.

'You were the first person I spoke to.' I say quietly.

'I know. People used to avoid me. I don't think Jack even knew I existed but you smiled that shy smile that became a cheeky smirk and then you spoke and you didn't shut up. I couldn't help but talk back to you and when you started cracking jokes and had me giggling and then Jack joined in it was like my life had just started.' Lexie says. 'I don't think I'll ever be able to repay you for what you've done for me. Earlier you said not to hate you but Matt I don't think I ever could. I love you, not like Hannah and you but more like a sister would love a brother. You always look out for me and care for me like a brother would. I trust you.'

'I haven't finished telling you everything, you might still hate me.' I mutter.

'OK, do your worst. Spill the beans.' Lexie says.

'Here goes.' I say and then tell her all about my mommy and daddy, being adopted, my sister and brothers, mom and dad and then finish off with. 'I will be pretty wealthy in a few years and Hannah and I are married and expecting twins in about 3 months time.'

'Woah.' She says and then hits me on my arm.

'What was that for?' I ask pretending to be hurt.

'You left Hannah on her own when she was pregnant.' She says so then I have to explain about losing the baby and her asking me to leave.

'I honestly didn't know about the other two. So do you hate me?' I say.

'No but I'm scared that this will change our friendship.' Lexie says.

'Not on my part.' I say.

'Or on mine.' Lexie says and we hug each other.

'Do you want to come and meet my mom and stay for dinner still?' I ask.

'Meet you mom? Now?' Lexie asks.

'Yes. She's at the house. I was only allowed out of the hospital because she said she would stay over. She's a doctor.' I say as I start the engine. 'Oh and she went to school with Jack's mom.'

'Small world.' Lexie mutters. 'I'm a bit nervous or actually more than a bit. I mean your mom, am I dressed OK?'

'She's just a regular person. She won't bite.' I say and grin at her. 'Lex you'll be fine.'

'But what if she can tell I'm no good, my parents…..'she starts to say.

'Lex enough. I was the child from hell and they adopted me. Christian's mom was a drug addict who died and they adopted him. My other brother and sister are adopted. My mom deals with families that are a lot worse than yours all the time. She will make a fuss of you and probably try and adopt you. You will end up loving her more than you do me because she is the most wonderful woman you will ever meet. ' I say.

'You love your mom an awful lot.' Lexie says.

'Yes I do. When I was little I thought she was an angel.' I say as I pull up on the drive.

'Who do all the cars belong to? I thought you said I was just meeting your mom.' Lexie says.

'You are. All the cars belong to me.' I say with a shrug.
