Chapter Twenty-Nine:
~Allen~
'No way… it can't be…' I could barely hear Lenalee's words as we continued to stare at the monstrous thing that hovered amongst the tall peaks.
'Can't be what? What is that?' I exclaimed still not comprehending what was going on as the akuma began surrounding it.
Then Lenalee started screaming. Her fingers tugging at her loose hair as she fell onto her knees. I have never seen Lenalee like this before and it frightened me.
'Lenalee?'
'A Fallen One… someone who failed in the eyes of God,' she whispered as I knelt beside her. I gazed back up at the human torso with mixed emotions.
The Fallen One wailed above our heads as the large mass of akuma created a dark misty ring around it. Was this thing their target?
'But I don't understand…' I glanced back at Lenalee as she continued to mutter to herself. Her voice wavered in disbelief.
'That's Suman and he was an accommodator like us… so why did he fall?'
'Huh?' I couldn't help but voice my confusion. Nothing was making much sense to me but unfortunately I had little time to dwell on it.
The sounds of thousands of akuma cannons were fired at the Fallen as it slowly rose into the air.
'I saw it happen once, before Komui joined the Order but whenever I tried to find out what happened to the boy… we have to save Suman,' the desperation in her eyes were hard to miss. But I felt a cloud of doubt hover over me as I glanced back at that thing.
Was that even possible?
Suddenly a blood-curdling roar echoed around the mountains as beams of light erupted from the Fallen's shoulders and neck.
Everything within its reach, mountains and akuma alike was obliterated within seconds leaving me stunned at its sheer prowess.
'What power…' I stuttered as I felt Lenalee grab my shoulders.
'Please Allen, we have to save him!' I closed my eyes forcing myself not to sigh. There wouldn't be any harm trying right?
'Right,' I nodded to show that I was willing to cooperate with Lenalee and she smiled slightly before turning to the Fallen One.
She grabbed me by the hand and we flew towards the fallen just as the akuma began to regroup.
'Waltz Misty Wind!' Lenalee whipped up a great tornado, destroying any akuma that had gotten too close and immobilize the Fallen.
The closer we got to the Fallen, Suman the more uncertain I became. Just being in its presence was enough to realize the amount of raw power that poured from it.
'Suman!' Lenalee called out to the deformed human that stuck out of a strange circle on the left side of its chest. She landed us around him on strange spike-looking protrusions coming out of the torso.
I frowned at the inside of the circle where Suman lay; something told me that this wasn't like the other surfaces of the Fallen.
'Lenalee, whatever you do don't touch the inside of the circle,' I warned her as she nodded and turned back to Suman.
'Suman it's me Lenalee, we're here to save you,' but there was no response at all from him as I pondered what to do next.
'I'll try to pull him out,' I leaned across not waiting for Lenalee to reply. But as I got closer something burst out from within the murky substance. My eyes widened when I realized it was a little girl.
Her eyes rigid in fear as she gasped for air crying out for help. Then she began sinking back into the circle.
Subconsciously, I changed my direction and drove my hand into the substance. A type of vacuum encircled my arm as I grabbed hold of the girl and pulled her out, freeing her.
However, tendrils began rising from where I had pulled the girl free and before I could react, it wrapped around my neck and began pulling me in.
'Allen!' Lenalee reached for me but I held out the unconscious girl, knowing she needed help more than me. Lenalee just stared at me in disbelief.
'Take her,' I managed to say before I was pulled under and into an unwelcoming world within the Fallen.
As I became aware of where I was, memories began bombarding me. But these memories were not my own, they were someone else's and it was all jumbled and in fragments.
I saw another small girl crying beside a woman no doubt her mother.
Then there was a tall dark shadow with a wicked grin splitting across its face.
After that, I heard a voice repeating the same thing over and over again.
I don't want to die
I blinked as realization dawned on me… did Suman betray his innocence?
Gazing up through the watery realm I had been pulled into, the pain began lessening in my head.
Had Suman stopped fighting and made a deal to the devil? Is his innocence punishing him for turning against God?
Traumas could be felt from the outside. The Fallen was still attacking the akuma outside. But where could all this power be coming from. Since Suman has become a Fallen, where was the innocence drawing its power?
No…
I gazed around me as horrible screams began emanating in the darkness.
It couldn't be possible… is his innocence… trying to kill him?
'Stop it!' I screamed as I slammed my left hand against the solid footing I had been standing on.
This just wasn't right. The innocence was judging just as God judges the sinner. However Suman's repentance was death!
'You can't kill your accommodator!'
I had somehow managed to break through but I had to shield my eyes from the glare coming from the innocence before me. It was Suman's innocence. But as I walked towards it something repelled me and threw me back out into the real world.
I was, at first, dazed by my experience inside the Fallen that I had almost forgotten that I was high above the ground.
Activating my innocence, I grabbed hold on one of the protruding spikes and pulled myself back onto the human torso.
'Suman, you have to stop this,' but like with Lenalee, Suman wasn't listening. It was if I wasn't there in the first place.
I gazed at where he came out from the living vacuum and tried to pull him out. It wasn't successful but Suman seemed to have realized that I was there. He gazed at me yet in some cruel way didn't see 'me'.
That was before he spat into my face and I smelled the metallic scent of blood.
'Suman…?'
'I hate it, God, man… I curse it ALL!' He screamed at me, his words filled me with dread. How could he say something like that? To me, it looked as if Suman was in some sort of trance.
'They can all go to hell!' He continued as the large human torso began to move. Confused, I gazed at its destination. I became horrified when my eyes fell on a village nestled amongst the mountains.
'Stop Suman, there are innocent people there!' I shouted at him, hoping it would somehow drill some sense into him. Finally he seemed to stare at me again.
'Get out of my sight, exorcist!' I gritted my teeth at his words.
'I cannot do that, not when you're about to put hundreds of people at risk,' He roared in my face and the great human torso imitated the bellow.
'What happened to protecting them? You can't just give up and let your innocence do as it wishes. You have to fight, Suman!' I held my hand out still praying that the truth of my words could reach him in his current state of mind.
'Enough!' He unexpectedly lunged at me and his mouth latched onto my hand. His teeth sinking in sent sharp pains up my arms. I bit my lip to stop myself from screaming.
'Suman, please don't do this,' I pleaded but a heard a horrible snap instead as his teeth broke the bones in my hand. I saw white as the pain and shock took its toll on me and the human torso flung itself into the side of a mountain.
My innocence got dislodged and I fell into the huge body of water below. Not long after I was washed ashore. The pain in my hand had dulled in the icy waters but the numbness began taken a hold.
I couldn't let Suman destroy that village! Fallen or not, I had to save him from doing something that he would most likely regret.
'Innocence activate, maximum strength!'
A great surge of energy flowed through me as I released the full power of my innocence. Something that could only be achieved by a General… but lives were at stake here, I had to do something!
Green light enveloped my arm and extended out towards the Fallen. Somehow I managed to trap it against a mountain however, I began to feel the ill effects of the full activation.
My body was tiring quicker and no matter how much strength I mustered, it left me all the same.
'Suman…!' But as I tried to hold out for longer, I heard the sound of something breaking.
I somehow found myself looking at my innocence. My left hand was charred black and shaking before it bent at an unnaturally angle. A chilling scream filled my ears and it wasn't hard to figure out that it was my own.
I fell to the ground holding onto my left arm, pleading for the pain to stop.
It hurt… it hurt so much.
My only distraction from the pain was sounds from the town the Fallen began desecrating.
I have to stop Suman but it hurts too much… so much.
Then I felt something slap my cheek and I glanced up to find Timcampy staring down at me. But since when did it get here? Unfortunately I didn't have long to figure that out as it chomped down on my ear.
'Ouch, what was that for?' I demanded as I glared at it. Timcampy just hissed at me, small rows of sharp teeth visible for me to see. It was like Tim was threatening to do it again.
'Okay I'm sorry! I won't give up, I'll keep trying!' I said quickly, which seemed to please him. Despite the pain, I couldn't help but smile at it.
'Thank you Tim…'
Suddenly I felt the ground I was on shake and slowly rise up into the well-lit sky.
'What's…?' I didn't have time to finish as I caught sight of the disintegrating torso of the Fallen.
The final stage was well under way and I only had a short amount of time to save Suman.
….
