Disclaimer: I own nothing other than Ari!

John and Rose returned when they said they would to find Ari already lost within her now job. Pete had put her in the Alien communications department after she had told him she was rather good at languages even without the TARDIS to help her. Her psychic powers helped with that though as she was able to learn a new language rather quickly once taking just a quick surface sweep of someone's mind.

She was in the middle of helping translate a document received from a planet called Estrapus a planet within their galaxy and one that was peaceful and already had people sent to Earth. The document was an outline for allowing a handful of settlers upon Earth and they in return would help humans to advance their medical technologies. Ari was a bit wary of such leaps in human advancement, she knew the Doctor wouldn't fully approve so when she heard Johns voice behind her she practically jumped out of her seat and pounced on him with what she had to ask him.

"What do you think to this?" She asked holding out the document. "I'm all for alien's coming to Earth in peace but I don't want the human race to advance too quickly."

"Well hello to you too." He said looking over what she was holding out to him and smiling at her.

She returned the smile and lowered the document just as he gave her a hug, laughing she hugged him back, glad to have a familiar face back in her life, even if it had only been a week.

"Hi." She said between laughs and when he finally let her go she held out the paperwork again. "So what do you think?"

"I think." He said taking the document and throwing it back into the table she had been sat at. "That you need to get some sleep. Its nearly midnight and you look exhausted."

"Well I've been translating that thing for the past twenty-four hours, what to you expect. Besides I've just finished it and I need to get a fully broken down translation to Pete ASAP and…"

"And nothing!" He said putting a hand to her arm. "Ari when was the last time you slept?" He asked gently.

"Umm well it depends on what you mean. I had an hour earlier, or was that yesterday?" She mumbled slightly then shrugged. "I don't remember."

"You're high on coffee." He stated.

"Yep, the stuff here is a lot stronger than what you get at home…" Her eyes suddenly widened. "Well…before I… before it…" Ari felt the walls she had been working so hard on in the last week to construct start to crumble. Shaking she let her eyes close as the world around her started to spin.

"Ari?" Johns voice said from a distance and then she felt her legs give out and the world went dark.

.*.*.*.

Ari? Ari? Arianna?!

Ari's eyes flew open and she sat up to find herself in her own bed, the bed she hadn't used since moving into the flat, preferring to either sleep at the office or on her sofa in the living room. Throwing the covers off of her she found herself still in the suit she had been wearing minus the jacket. Getting off the bed she threw the bedroom door open and made her way to the living room where she could hear voices.

"Doctor?" She asked turning the corner but stopped when she saw Rose and John sat at her dinning table. They both looked at her with concern in their eyes but she let it affect her. "He was calling my name." She said looking from one face to another.

"He's not here." Rose said getting up from the table. "I'll make you a drink."

"Not coffee." John said his eyes not leaving Ari's.

"Camomile tea it is then." Rose muttered as she flicked the kettle on.

"I heard him calling me."

"A dream." John replied with a small smile.

"No, I don't dream, I only have nightmares. But this was different, it was like it was right here." She pointed to her head as she spoke.

"Ari, he hasn't been back to Earth since that time you where both here and that was over a year ago."

"John, I think you should go home." Rose suddenly said coming to stand next to Ari and holding out a steaming cup to her.

"What? Why?"

"Just go." Ari turned to look at Rose who was staring at her husband in such away that no man would argue with her.

"Fine." John muttered standing up and collecting his coat from the back of his chair. By the time he reached Rose the slight anger and annoyance he had been feeling had gone and he gave Rose a soft kiss on the cheek. "Don't be too long."

"I wont."

Once he was gone Rose led Ari to the sofa and they both sat down. Ari put her cup on the coffee table before the sofa and then just sat back her eyes still wide as they looked out into the dark beyond the windows.

"I know what it is like to be left behind." Rose said suddenly making Ari turn to her.

"But I wasn't left behind." Ari said holding Rose's eyes. "I sent him away."

"Yes, but you are still here, on your own and away from the one person that can make you live again. I get that, I understand that. I was you once, I felt like my whole life was coming to an end when I got locked here, away from my Doctor. My only salvation was my mum and Micky. And then Tony came along and made it just that little better." She paused putting her cup down and taking Ari's hand. "I see how you are with John; he is the only one that can make you smile."

"I don't love him!" Ari blurted out and Rose laughed.

"I know you don't, but he reminds you of your Doctor yes?" Ari only nodded. "I get it, I really do. You want to cling onto anything that makes you closer to him, I did just the same with the Dimension cannon, it became an obsession and I put not only my life but everyone else's life in danger just so I could get back."

"I'm not dangerous to anyone else." Ari pointed out.

"No, but you are become very dangerous to yourself. You need to sleep Ari, you need to eat and you need to try and live again." Ari felt a tear start to fall down her face and Rose reached out and wiped it away. "I know it will take time and I know that you are hurting far more than you let on, but if you don't look after yourself then the Doctor will have no one to find."

"But he thinks I'm dead."

"I know."Rose said with a small smile." But he loves Earth."

Ari hadn't thought about that. It was very true that the Doctor loved this planet so there was a very strong possibility that he would come back.

"Why didn't I think about that?" She breathed out shocked at her own stupidity.

"Because you had given up hope. Don't ever give up hope Ari because when you do, you will have nothing else to live for."

Ari slowly came back to life after that, she started to look after herself more and though there were times she threw herself into her job she always made sure to do exactly what Rose had told her to do.

So she lived and worked and when the time came she even partied. She had made a few friends other than John and Rose though she still spent a lot of time with the couple. John had become her best friend and Rose was her closest confidant, the person she could always turn to if things became too much. Though she knew that at times she and John drove Rose mad with the way they would talk, especially once they got onto a subject Rose didn't fully understand. At those times she would just leave the two of them to it and go and do what ever, while she and John worked on puzzling equations and tried to put the universe to rights.

And so life continued in that same routine, until one day nearly four years later, a blue box appeared out of no where.
