What Is And What Should Never Be
Flashback, months ago
"An actual cure?" Dean questioned as he and Rebekah laid awake that night, a few weeks before he was killed.
"It turned out to be a curse," Rebekah explained as he rested his hand over hers. "The vampire that took it eventually died when another vampire drank the cure from her blood. Once the cure was gone, old age caught up with her." She paused. "So, I'm glad I didn't take it," she said lightly. "Don't want a thousand years catching up with me."
"You do look great for your age," Dean teased and she smiled. "If there was another way though, would you take it?"
"I think we're more likely to get you to change your mind on turning than we are to find a way to cure me," Rebekah said sadly and Dean gave a sad half smile, reaching over to hold her hand.
Rebekah sat up suddenly, waking up in bed alone. She was surprised to find herself back at the house, given that her mother had recently caught up with her in the French Quarter. Hearing something in her closet, she got up hesitantly to go check it. When she opened the door though, she was more than surprised over who popped out at her.
"Boo!" a small child of maybe three years old scared her. "Did I scare you Aunt Beksy? Did I?" she asked.
"Who...Ava?" Rebekah asked in disbelief.
"Olivia," the little girl with blonde hair laughed.
"Livi!" Madison said, coming into the room and scooping her up, the little girl laughing. "I'm sorry Bekah, we were playing hide and seek. Were you napping?" Madison jumped as Rebekah came over and place a hand on her wrist, feeling a pulse.
"You're human," Rebekah gasped.
"Uh huh," Madison laughed. "Were you having those weird dreams again?" She questioned, the toddler squirming.
"Daddy!" she shouted, spotting Klaus in the hallway. Madison set her down and let her take off running.
"Hello sweetheart," he grinned, kissing her cheek. "Where's your brother love?" he asked.
"He went to go get Sam from the airport," Madison reminded him.
"Airport?" Rebekah questioned.
"Because he's coming to visit from California," Madison laughed. "Where he lives," she teased.
"Is he a lawyer?" Rebekah asked in disbelief.
"Yeah," Madison said in confusion, looking at her boyfriend who just shrugged. "And, here's hoping Cami likes him when they meet later. Maybe we can convince him to come here."
"I highly doubt that," Klaus told her, their daughter laying her sleepy head on his shoulder.
"Well, this house your parents left is big enough for all of us," Madison reminded him. "You and Elijah moved your art dealing business here, Kol is on his way to opening a bar. Adam's going to transfer to school here." She shrugged. "Why can't Sam moved here?"
"I guess we'll see," Klaus nodded. "C'mon," he told Olivia. "Do you want to help mommy and daddy with lunch?"
"Yesssss," the little girl was cheering as he carried her out of the room, Madison following. Confused as every, Rebekah grabbed her phone and immediately dialed Dean.
"Hey baby," Dean answered. "Listen, I'm at baggage claim, can I-"
"What the hell is going on?" Rebekah asked him.
"I'm...picking up my brother from the airport?" Dean asked in confusion.
"No!" Rebekah protested. "Everyone is human and-"
"You had one of those nightmares again," Dean sighed. "Bekah, baby, I promise none of that stuff is real. You're starting to worry me."
"Dean, you're a hunter, you know it's real," she accused.
"I'm a mechanic," Dean reminded her. "You're a nurse. We live with your brothers, my sister, their little girl."
"Olivia," Rebekah said. "But, what about Ava?" Dean sighed heavily.
"You know Mads doesn't like talking about her miscarriage," Dean told her. "And I told you not to worry about that so much." She could practically see him smiling. "We'll tell everyone our news tonight, ok?"
"What news?" Rebekah asked in confusion.
"About our baby," Dean reminded her, not getting what was going on with her.
"Our baby?!" Rebekah snapped.
Rebekah woke up now in the tomb where her mother was keeping her, lying still on the cold table. She tried to move, but some kind of magic her mother was doing must be keeping her there. She noticed her mother, in her true form not possessing another, coming over closer to her. She noticed another all to familiar figure with her as well; her older brother Finn.
"What was that?" she demanded of her mother.
"I wanted to show you what your life will be like if you and your brothers take me up on my offer," Esther explained.
"And what offer is that?" Rebekah asked in disgust.
"I can make you human again, like your brother Finn," Esther assured her. "I can give you everything you've ever wanted."
"Until other vampires hear that we're cured and come to take it from us," Rebekah reminded her, remembering what happened when another vampire had been cured.
"This isn't like the cure, it's a true healing of your body, of your soul," Esther explained. "I've already turned your brother Finn back, I will be able to do that for you and your brothers, and Madison," she tacked on. "I'm hoping you accept."
"And what's stopping you from just turning me back right now?" Rebekah snapped at her.
"For it to work, you have to accept my offer. I can't force it upon you," Esther explained. "Think about it Rebekah. You and that boy, you can have a family. You don't have to worry about him growing old and leaving you." She smiled. "Isn't that what you really want? Let me give that to you." Rebekah opened her mouth to say something, but then stopped. She did want all of those things with Dean.
"What's to stop you from killing me once I'm human?" Rebekah asked. After all, her mother had tried to kill her before, in the not so distant past.
"Oh, my darling," Esther looked at her sadly. "What I did in Mystic Falls was to bring an end to you being a vampire." She smiled. "Through this spell I've learned from the other side, I can take that curse away from you, all while keeping you alive." She paused. "What do you say, Rebekah?"
Of course, nothing with Esther was without it's strings.
She did truly want to heal her children from being vampires, to let them grow older and start families of their own. Doing so though was going to come at a price. They were going to be able to have children, but their first born children would all be taken from them, just as her daughter Freya was taken from her. Esther had gone after Ava so adamantly because she knew what the child would bring upon them. Now though, with the chance to save her children from being vampires, she grew less concerned about the children that would be taken without much of a fight once they were human.
"Any sign of her?" Dean was asking Madison as he called her on the phone, the whole family continuing to search for Rebekah.
"Nothing," Madison said, walking alongside Klaus. While Dean, Elijah, Kol, and Sam all split up alone Klaus wasn't leaving Madison's side. They continued to search any place they thought Esther might be keeping Rebekah, both obvious and not. "Did someone take the cemetery?" she asked now.
"Elijah and Kol each took one," Dean assured her. "But, that doesn't mean it's not one giant maze," he said in annoyance.
"Like when they took the baby," Madison said uneasily. "Why can't your angel buddy find them?" she asked sarcastically.
"Apparently her magic is enough to hide her from the angels too," Dean said, not appreciating the sarcasm. "Look, Mads, I'm as skeptical as you on this angel business. But, I'm starting to think this might be the real thing."
"What makes you say that?" she questioned.
"He showed up just now, saying we had to get rid of Esther," he started off.
"We've heard that before," Madison said, glancing over at Klaus who gave her a look.
"Listen smart ass," Dean told her and she rolled her eyes. "He was talking about these seals breaking, seals that keep Lucifer locked in a cage, that if he gets out it'll be the apocalypse."
"Convenient the 'angel,'" she said, using air quotes. "That wants you to do stuff for him has all these answers."
"You think I didn't back it up with Bobby?" he snapped at her and Madison stopped. "It's straight from Revelations, these seals. And Esther is apparently the key to breaking open a few of them. Starting with this one."
"Which is what?" Klaus questioned, wondering what ritual his sister got dragged into.
"She has to bring a man and a woman back from vampirism," Dean said. "Healing them completely, and not like the cure, but something permanent that can't get taken away. And since she already turned your brother Finn back-"
"All she needs is Rebekah," Madison finished. "How many seals are there?"
"Hundreds," Dean said, not getting the point. "But only sixty-six have to break."
"And what number are we on?" she asked seriously.
"I don't know, one?" Dean said. "Within the first ten, I don't know Mads. Why?"
"Don't stop Esther," Madison said.
"Are you crazy?" Klaus accused her.
"What he said," Dean agreed.
"Dean, you know Bekah wants this more than anything," Madison reminded him. "Even more than you turning. And you know that's true." She paused. "Don't stop her from making Bekah human." Dean heard a ring in his ear and he saw that it was Kol on the other line.
"I gotta go Mads," Dean said, hanging up though he could hear her protesting. "Yeah?"
"I found her," Kol said. "Mother reached out to me, since she figured I would be next to accept her offer. She's almost done with Rebekah."
"Where are you?" Dean asked.
Rebekah woke up, back at the house, safe in her and Dean's bed. Other than a slight headache, she felt perfectly fine. She focused her hearing to see if she could hear anyone else at the house, but heard nothing. Taking a deep breath, she felt the inside of her wrist; there was a pulse. Her breath caught in her throat, tears welling in her eyes as she realized that she was indeed human again.
"Hey," Dean caught her attention from the doorway.
"Hi!" Rebekah greeted him excitedly, getting up and hurrying to hug him. "Look, I know you're probably still sour with my mother for-"
"She's dead Beks," Dean told her quietly. "I tried to stop her, from what she was doing, but it was already done."
"And, she's gone?" Rebekah questioned, knowing now the rest of her siblings couldn't turn back, not that they wanted to; he nodded. "Dean, I know you were worried about me, but she wasn't hurting me. I-"
"I know," Dean stopped her. He couldn't lie to her. "She was curing you, I know." He half smiled. "You're human."
"And this isn't good news?" Rebekah questioned, looking him over. "Dean, we can be together." She paused. "If you knew she wasn't hurting me, then why did you kill her?"
"How about for starters what she put Mads through with Ava," Dean reminded her.
"Then leave her for my brother," Rebekah pointed out. "You know how much he loves a good revenge story." She paused. "Were you trying to stop her from turning me?"
"It's what was commanded," Castiel interrupted, appearing in their room now.
"Is this the angel?" Rebekah asked, still confused but slightly more excited.
"Castiel," he told her. "And, now that Dean's failed and you're human again, we're one step closer to the apocalypse."
"Hey, come on," Dean protested, seeing that Rebekah was hurt; this was the greatest moment in her life and now she was hearing from the one thing she wanted to believe in that it was wrong.
"What's he talking about?" Rebekah asked him.
"I'll explain everything," Dean assured her, then looked to the angel. "Alone," he added on now.
"Not yet," Castiel told him now. "It's time we all had a meeting." With that, he disappeared. Dean heard his sister scream downstairs, having jumped, assuming Castiel had gone into the living room.
"Who the hell is that?" she demanded, Dean and Rebekah rushing downstairs where her brothers and Madison were.
"The angel that brought back your brother," Klaus told her.
"We need to talk," Castiel told them and Madison rolled her eyes. "I know you don't believe in me Madison, but if I were you I would start." He paused. "I'm what's going to get your daughter home."
"What did you just say?" Klaus asked now.
"Your mother's magic was the key to several seals," Castiel explained. "Her death has prevented that, but there is still another threat to her here in the city."
"The witches?" Dean questioned.
"He means Finn," Elijah realized and the angel nodded.
"Your mother and brother were the reason the witches attacked your baby in the first place," Castiel reminded them. "With the death of your mother and his hatred towards what all of you are to begin with-"
"He's going to come after us," Kol said, glancing at Madison. "Even worse than before."
"Let him try," Klaus said. "All of us versus one brand new witch?"
"A new, powerful witch mentored by your mother," Castiel told him. "With all the French Quarter witches on his side, not to mention they're looking for a way to unite the werewolves with them."
"They hate each other," Madison said in confusion.
"Not if the witches can keep them from turning on the full moon," Castiel said now.
"Which I'm guessing is another seal," Dean questioned and the angel nodded.
"Kill Finn and Ava can come home," Castiel said. "Easier said than done, but it needs to be done. She needs to return to this city where she can grow and learn as she's supposed to."
"My baby isn't going to be some project for the angels," Madison protested.
"Your baby will be protected by the angels," Castiel stopped her. "Because of how important she is, how special she is. Which leads me to this," he paused. "You need to stop the seals from breaking. If Lucifer is freed he will come for your daughter because he knows how powerful she will be."
"And how are we supposed to stop these seals from breaking if they can be broken by anyone at anytime?" Dean questioned.
"There's a demon, Lilith," Castiel answered him. "She's working to break the seals now. She will be on her way to New Orleans."
"What makes you say that?" Dean asked nervously.
"Where is your brother, Dean?" Castiel answered his question with his own. "While your family all sits here and listens to what I have to say, where is Sam?"
"What did you say this time?" Ruby asked Sam, meeting him out in the bayou as they had been a few times in the days since Dean was saved.
"That I'm still trying to patch things up with Cami," Sam said.
"And what have you told her?" Ruby asked.
"What's it matter?" Sam asked in annoyance and she gave him a look. "Nothing," he said now. "Because she's still not talking to me." He shook his head. "What are we doing Ruby?"
"Talking to you or not, you want to keep her safe right?" Ruby questioned and he didn't answer. "And the rest of your family, your niece?" Sam looked at her seriously.
"What did you just say?" Sam demanded. He had never told Ruby about Ava still being alive.
"The demons know Sam," Ruby said like it should be obvious. "Just because Davina hid her from being found doesn't mean one couldn't be passing through town and figure out who Adam was taking care of."
"When did you find out about this?" Sam snapped.
"This morning," Ruby said defensively. "That's what I came here to tell you-"
"You should have told me the second you knew!" Sam shouted at her, picking up his phone to dial.
"What are you doing?" Ruby asked.
"Dean," Sam said when his brother answered.
"Sam, where are you?" Dean was asking.
"Look," Sam said, knowing he was going to be spilling all his secrets but he had to. "You have to call Adam and tell him to run, to take Ava far away, and take the hex bags Davina made with them."
"What are you talking about?" Dean asked worriedly.
"The demons know where she is!" Sam shouted at him.
