AN: This is me apologizing yet again for being so terrible at updating this. Geez it's been over a month and a half! I am awful. But you guys don't want to hear me berate myself, so I'll get on with this. Here's the moment for "Wrapped Up in Death," I considered writing Kate checking Castle out when his pants were ripped, but I decided to go with the curse scene instead. I'm not real jazzed about this chapter; it just feels awkward to me. But you guys let me know what you think. Please review!
"So far this case is nothing but dead ends." Okay, so it wasn't Kate's best setup, but it would do the job. Ryan and Espo could take it from there. "Hmm, you know why?" "Why?" All Kate had to do was get through this without laughing. Castle would pretend not to believe in curses, but if they planted the seed early, he would fall for it eventually. "Because Castle's cursed." Kate reminded herself for the umpteenth time never to cross the boys. They were smart enough not to mess with her without reason, but if they wanted, they could make her life pretty miserable. She looked over at Castle, careful not to move too quickly. She wanted to see his reaction, but she couldn't give herself away. "You had to tell them, didn't you?" Like he should be surprised. Did he really think she'd keep that to herself? "Yes. Yes I did." She didn't have a choice really. It would be a crime not to tease him about this. "Well gentlemen you'll be happy to know that I don't believe in curses." For now, Kate thought as she carefully watched Castle's reaction to the King Tut information Espo had researched when she'd texted him earlier. She had to give it to Castle though; he had done his research on mummies too. Not that it should have surprised her. He still went to the museum to see the dinosaurs, of course he'd also know as much as possible about ancient tombs. "Well didn't you say that that mummy smelled kind of funny?" He wasn't buying it yet; that was obvious. But it was hilarious watching the doubt cloud his common sense. "Well yes, but there's-" "And you did gaze upon the face of the mummy?" Kate turned back to Castle at Ryan's question and gave her best slightly scared face. All she had to do was not laugh. As long as she didn't laugh this would work. But Castle was watching her as if he couldn't believe she was actually considering this as a possibility. And she could actually see his brain working, trying to decide whether or not he should believe her. Honestly, didn't he know her better than that by now? She could tell his logical response was starting to give way. He wasn't afraid yet, but the "what if" but was creeping in. Kate blinked slowly to break their eye contact. She wasn't sure she'd be able to hold on much longer if he kept staring at her like that. It was disconcerting sometimes, the way he stared at her. He looked away then and put Medina's bio back on the board. "You guys, there is no curse." He sounded exasperated, but Kate could tell he wasn't just trying to convince them anymore. "Ow! Paper cut." He turned around and she had to look away to prevent herself from laughing. Luckily, the boys took up the slack for her. From the corner of her eye she saw them looking at him knowingly. "Yes, the curse gave me a paper cut." His tone was dripping with sarcasm. Usually that was her defense against stupid, but he seemed to be borrowing it to convince himself. "These things start small, then they snowball." "Mmm." Kat was mumbling, but she knew that if she opened her mouth she'd be a goner. She didn't have to actively participate in this conversation, it was enough for her to not refute the curse theory, but even that was proving difficult. She came out of her internal struggle when Espo said bad things come in threes. "Threes like celebrities. They always die in threes." That might have been a bit of a low blow, insinuating that Castle was a celebrity that was going to die. His response was worth it though. He looked at her as if he saw through the ruse. And to his credit he probably did; he just didn't realize it. It was still working though, so Kate didn't much care. "Living in the dark ages here." He said, turning back to the white board. "Why don't you guys check with Lanie and see if she found anything?" Kate directed the boys, giving a slight nod before standing to watch Castle. Since his back was turned, she let a smirk escape her careful mask of concern. This was going to be fun.
AN2: Okay, so there it is. Did you like it? Please let me know in the reviews. I have the next chapter already kind of written, so I'll try and get it up before the weekend. And next week I'm hoping for the rest of season 2. No promises but I will try my best to get to it. I just haven't really felt much like writing lately, plus I've been really busy with classes etc. My hope is that now I've started up again I'll keep going, but we'll see. If you're following The Fall, hopefully I'll have something new up this weekend (fingers crossed).
